[Q] Rooting NC model # BNTV250 - Nook Color Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am trying to get CM7 on a friends NC and he has a BNTV250. I find conflicting info on if you can root it or not. Can someone please clairfy and point me in the right direction please.
Thanks

BNTV250 is a NOOK Tablet, not a NOOK Color. It certainly can be rooted, but the procedure is very different. If you're mixing the two up, I can understand your confusion.
You posted this in the NOOK Color section. There is a separate NOOK Tablet section.

Huskermania does have some great videos. Unfortunatly his links may be outdated.
And no its not hard....its also completly safe since the nook looks to boot from sd first. Its as easy as burning a DVD,

[Q] How are we separating the original NC to the new NC?

I want to buy the new NC 2 but I cant seem to figure out how we are separating the two tablets. Unless the original NC rooting and Roms work with the new NC2. Is that correct?
Well they are naming it the Nook Tablet. Nook Color is still an active product.
There is a new forum on XDA for the Nook Tablet.

No, a new port is needed.

[Q] Rooting and the NookColor

I'd like to get the Android Market on my Nook Color (older hardware running 1.4.1). I've read that this is possible while keeping the B&N ROM. How would I go about doing this? The device is currently bone stock on 1.4.1 not rooted.
I haven't seen a lot of detailed guides on getting rooted on 1.4.1 (which i assume is required for the market). I also haven't seen that many good threads with steps to put the market on the NC with the B&N ROM (1.4.1).
Any suggested threads or places to look? Any have the steps needed to get the market on my Nook?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I saw plenty of videos but they are for all the older version on the B&N ROM. I have 1.4.1 and haven't had much luck finding a procedure for that specific version.
That must be the new update, mine was 1.3, im not sure how to root 1.4

Many people including me have rooted their 1.4.1 using the manualnooter-5-12-18.zip and following the instructions. Good luck.

Thanks for the response and link!
I was looking over that thread and there are links that go to other links that are pretty old (like February through May of 2011) that haven't been updated in months. That's why I was asking I guess. I want to make sure I am using the latest, but all the information seems so scattered about it's hard to find and verify that it is the latest.
That thread is excellent, but the current info doesn't start until page 164 or so.
I've summarized all of my experiences using manualnooter-5.12.20 and provide links to the posts I gathered the info from. GMPOWER's efforts in the MN thread were the start of success with 1.4.1. There are a few other little issues that you'll want to be aware of as well.

[Q] How to sideload on Nook Color 1.4.1

Hey all. I've searched through the forums, but it seems like talk of the NC has stopped in favor of talk of the NT, and I can't find the info I need.
I have a nook color running 1.4.1, unrooted. I've seen plenty of threads about how to sideload apps on the NT running 1.4.1 without rooting, but no one seems to have explained how to do this for NC. Is it still possible? If anyone can explain how to get it done, please let me know. All I really want is the Amazon Appstore and the Kindle app, so I'm not sure I really need to do a full-fledged root. I really like the Nook interface and don't want to have to flash CM7 to just read my Kindle books.
Thanks

Still a lot of love for the NC! It's still much more hackable than the NT.

I don't believe sideloading apps on the NC ever was possible without rooting. I do not recall any discussions of how to do so.

You can easily root B&N 1.4.1 without losing any B&N functionality. You can load the Kindle and Amazon App store apps with no problem. If that's all you want to do, you don't have to do anything more. GMPOWER has kindly devoted a lot of effort into developing the ManualNooter tool to make this simple. I've put together a guide on using his tool, plus a few other tips for those that prefer to stay with the B&N software. You certainly do not need to load CM7 to read Kindle books!
I don't have the stock 1.4.1 ROM so I can't tell you for sure but there are members reported that side-loading works fine on rooted stock 1.4.1 while others said they can't.

How easy is it to unroot from this method? Is there a simply tutorial on how to do that as well?
I don't want to root unless I know I can unroot just as easily, in case I need warranty support.
Just about anything you want to do to the nook is just as easily undoable. Returning to stock is a non-issue, easy as pie. Although in truth, there is almost no reason to do so. There would have to be a hardware issue, as I have yet to see an unsolved ROM or software problem on these forums, and I've seen some crazy stuff.
The nook.is a great machine, with amazing capabilities considering its origins. Adding the custom ROM makes it better in every concievable way. I ran stock software for almost nine months and regret every minute of it. GMpower did yeoman's work putting ManualNooter together for the cautious types, but I truly would recommend going whole hog with cyanogen.
I had a warranty issue with my sdcard slot after I rooted it, and even with no sdcard, I got it back to stock, replaced, and then flashed a backup of my install, all my books and apps right back to the way they were.
Everyone should root. You own the device, there is no reason not to maximize its abilities.

In his thread on MN for 1.4.1, the illustrious GMPOWER points to the NOOKdevs procedure for restoring to stock. I've used it myself a few times, and he would certainly know!
I've been running B&N 1.4.1 rooted for over a month using MN with no big issues. There are a few interface glitches that cause menus to appear as white on white, but that's about it.

I'm a little confused about the guide you posted. It seems like the goal of steps 1-4 is to get an unrooted 1.4.1 running, but I already have that. Do I still need to follow these steps? if not, can you give me an updated version of the guide?

Your timing is impeccable. I just updated the version over at androidforums to include some "start here" instructions. Take a look there. I'll be updating the version here when I get some time. Use the version of MN from GMPOWER's thread. I need to update those links as well (though no harm will come from using the version prior.)

[Q] Trying to update a rooted nook.

Hey.
I have the nook glowlight, softwer version 1.2.1.
And I want to update to 1.3.1, the problem is that I rooted my nook a long time ago
trying to add hebrew font to him (didn't work).
Anyway I downloaded the update file from the site, and I put it as is in the main folder.
But nothing happened, when I disconnected the nook it just deleted the file.
Probably because its rooted.
Any suggestion how to update ?
Thanks in advance.
Do you have a Nook Glowlight (the white one) or a Nook Simple Touch with Glowlight (the black one)? The latest firmware for the the Simple Touch with Glowlight is 1.2.1. I believe that 1.3.1 is for the white Nook Glowlight.
The Nook Glowlight shipped with firmware 1.3.1, the Nook Simple Touch with Glowlight latest is 1.2.1, therefore your question has me confused, either you're already running the latest or somehow or another you're running the wrong firmware.

Thank goodness I asked before I did something stupid
Apparently I have the nook simple glowlight (black)
The truth is that I did not know there were two versions and that there is a different.
so i guess I have the most updated software.
Thank you for the answer and I am sorry about the confusion!

Thankfully, you can't really "do anything stupid" in this situation, because if you had attempted to update your Nook Touch Glow to 1.3.1, it wouldn't have accepted the file as an update.
Yeah, these devices are as close to being brick proof as you're ever likely to find. Lol.
