How's does it work for you?
Aloha,
FreeWELL/tekahuna
I had to uninstall then re-install, now it works great! Nice job!!!
I looked through the apps settings, is there any way to choose Infrastructure mode or does it just do it automatically? Thanks.
I went from PDAnet to this, and my speed just about doubled based on the tests done at speedtest.net
NO DICE ApeX 1.3.1
Couldn't get AP mode to start no matter what I did after deleting the Apex one out of /system/app
I reinstalled, cleared data, and I get a message:
No Access Control!
Sorry, but your kernel does not have all necessary features for the Access Control feature of this application. Access Control will be disabled.

I'm not sure what Access Control is.
I can test to see if it uses Infrastructure Mode later tonight.
Regarding the error:
Using GummyJar 2.5
Android Version:
2.2.1
Kernel Version:
2.6.32.9-g55626e1
[email protected] #1
SBF'd and OTA updated last night before installing the ROM.
I should mention, it appears to work otherwise, but again, I will check later. My laptop (corporate assigned) cannot connect to AdHoc networks, so this would be amazing to get working.
+1 EtherBoo. Same exact error, ROM and Kernel version.
kernel not supported
I get the same Sorry, but your kernel does not have all necessary features for the Access Control feature of this application. Access Control will be disabled.. Android 2.2.1 Apex 1.3.1

Well, yes ... you guys get a message that "access control" is disabled because of a missing kernel-feature. "CONFIG_NETFILTER_XT_MATCH_MAC" is missing!
See: http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/wiki/FAQ
So yes, "access control" is unavailable for your devices.
But what do you get instead:
1) Infrastructure mode - your phone acts like "a real" accesspoint!
2) Strong WPA-encryption instead hacked-in-seconds WEP-encryption.
Your choice!
BTW ... if you want the access-control back install a custom kernel (if possible) which has above option/feature enabeld. Also include CONFIG_PROC_FS, CONFIG_IKCONFIG, and CONFIG_IKCONFIG_PRO so that the phone dumps the kernel-config to /proc/config.gz and the app will be able to detect it correctly!
Custom Kernels are not possible on the X, and most likely won't be, since it doesn't look like anyone with the know-how is still working on hacking the locked boot loader.
This is my last Moto product because of it (even though the Atrix is making me wet my pants).
I was mistaken, it is using Infrastructure mode. As I mentioned, I wasn't able to test at the time, and thought Access Control was Infrastructure Mode.
Thank you, thank you, thank you!
And who cares about Access Control? It's not necessary now that we have strong WPA/WPA2 encryption, and of course a true AP with the Droid X and Droid 2.
Besides, I believe Access control relies on the MAC Address which can be easily spoofed since it's sent as plain text. You guys rock!!!
My wife just got a D2 Global. I have a DX and I am trying to get her a wireless tether setup. I also ket the same kernel message. Has anybody had luck with the 3G hot spot? I could use some help! Thanks.

Yes... just turn on 3g hotspot then toggle airplane mode on then back off and you should have free wifi... that's how I do it. Its encrypted and runs nice and smooth

You do understand that the "error" message has nothing to do with the normal usage of the program. It will work just fine even if you get that error. You just cannot use the "Access Control" portion of the program which was a way to limit the devices that could connect to the phone. However, as stated by other members, you don't need access control at all. Just use WPA encryption and a strong password. This is a more secure connection than using WEP and access control.
Thanks for the heads up
Do I need to turn 3g mobile hotspot on for wireless tether to work? I see the network on my laptop, but keeps saying it can't connect. Any tricks? Thanks!

Droid X rooted and Nook Color rooted. Works great! Solves the infrastructure problem Had to uninstall and re-install as directed, but that did the trick. A big thank you!
I'm picking up my phone tomorrow. I was wondering if any of the tethering apps work with or without root on this phone yet. I know the more popular one requires a kernel with netiptables enabled. I'm not sure if the default kernel supports this or not.

I'm sure PDAnet works or you can just change the APN settings to use native hotspots without getting charged.

Like the built in tethering option and yeah pretty much anywhere you can get a data connection.
I got the Barnacle Wifi tether working without much challenge thanks to the Devs in the other threads. Could not install it from the AppBrain market but was able to follow the links to download the APK and install it from the internal sd card. Tried to get the widget to donate too,but could not do so from the market place.

Me either, this is my first Android phone. I did a search for wifi hotspot in the AppBrain market and it came up. My limited test with it was good. Used the APN setup from other threads and rooted the phone, also described elsewhere. Then downloaded the APK and installed it. A fairly straight forward process.
Problem with PDANet is the huge cost when I'd only really use the feature when traveling. How is barnacle wifi? Does it support encryption?
I am using a basic WEP key, not sure what you want out of the encryption. Better to check developers web site, I know there are some challenges but it is a little out of my league without spending a long time reading about it.
Well WEP/WPA/WPA2 type of encryption so someone doesn't steal my limited data. Does it support WPA/2 by the way? WEP is pretty easily cracked these days, but it is better than nothing at all.
Hello all, I am new here so I'm sorry if I am ignorent of anything
I have an Iconia tab, and have been patiently for the netflix app to be released. Well it finally seems like it has been done here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1076150
My problem is when I download the apk and try to open it I get the error ''cannot open file''.
Any suggestions? Thanks
Download the apk with Firefox mobile or your desktop PC instead of the default browser. AFAIK, streaming still doesn't work for us, just queue management.
Its not working on the acer yet.
Edit: ninja'd
I think I read somewhere it's a Honeycomb issue, not just an Acer issue.
the device check disabled apk asks you to upgrade to the latest version on the market (which doesn't exist on our device), and the non-check disabled version will let you browse, but if you try to play a video it pops an error saying the device is not supported.
Hopefully we'll get something that works in the near future. Netflix claims to be working on other devices and it looked like tablets were on the list as well.
Thanks everyone for your answers. Any chance we can keep this thread going as an update to everyone wondering when netflix will be brought over so users do not have to scour the web in search of the answer?
Just a bit of a noob question, but what about changing your build.prop?
If I understand correctly, that requires root, and I do not want do downgrade to gingerbread.
Yup..

Such a shame Netflix has not gotten it together for us yet - this screen rocks as a movie player!

I have my acer rooted, but not well enough it seems. I still run honeycomb, and in fact still get firmware updates from acer. I rooted it so I can setup my two 1tb external hard drives to it lol. just used gingerbreak and a couple other things post root. However, i did try and edit the build.prop but wont allow me to save, just read only. I havent messed with it extensively, but seems like there should be a way.

If you use root explorer it will let you mount the file system read-write so you can edit the file.
Alright guys I am not sure if it has been tested but when I get home. I have the lib files that fixed the playback issue on sense 3.0 I will install the deactive device check version and push the lib Files It may actually work!! I just tested on another device that had playback issues worked flawlessly!! Ill let you guys know in like 2 hours or so when I get home.
Right on!

i am very excited to find out on this
Alright guys so after dismantling netflix.apk the latest version the issue is within one of the files called nrdp.js Think of it as the gate keeper to our netflix enjoyment. It checks certain areas of the device here is the list we need to bypass to get the rsa key injected into our devices for access to the netflix servers.
1.Get Model
2.Get Software Version
3.Get Certification Version
4.Get ESN
5.Get ESN Prefix
Those are all the functions it calls for device checking. That I could find. There is also a certificate file ca.pem that controls how long the app works for before you have to get new certificate that is encrypted up the ass so big roadblock..... Sorry I tried and will continue to try but it does not look good... Damn those large companies with their big sticks.
Installed but error connecting after selecting a vid
I have an stock iconia with 3.1 and tonight I installed the apk mentioned in this article:

App runs but when I select a vid I get:
"Sorry, we could not reach the Netflix service. Please try again later. If the problems persists please visit the Netflix website (12001)."
Anyone else getting this? Any workarounds?

Amazon seems to have ripped out the vpn services config screen from their skinned settings menu. I can't even call it from the command line (or I'm just a nit).
I've tried swapping for another gingerbread settings app but this stuff is a little beyond me.
If Amazon is consistent in the way I think they are when developing the fire I'm sure the VPN capability is still there -- just no way to configure or start it.
Ideas?

The vpn service is there and looks like it'll run if configured.
However it looks like the UI for the configuration isnt hidden somewhere that one can jump to, so that will need to be ported (unless you know how to configure it manually over adb)

If you're going to pay for VPN service, think about using unblock-us. It works with some sort of "DNS cloacking" and DNS settings can be modified both on Fire or on your home router.
Been playing with VPN all day.
First tried activating VPN on my iPhone then accessing the Hotspot one PPTP then LPTP. Didn't work.
Rooted, still can't get Market Place running (hangs on download) but got OpenVPN working off direct download but there's no tun.ko for it to work.
Tried posting this in the dev group under the vpn question, though as I just registered I can't do that.
I have been playing with this for a few days, as right after I got my fire I flew to Slovakia to visit with the in-laws. I have a fair bit of time on my hands as they don't speak English and I don't speak Slovak. I'd love to get this working, as netflix or hulu or prime would be an awesome way to spend my time here right now, heh.
I can compile the tun.ko module from the source Amazon posted, however this is my first time doing any kind of ARM development, and I cant for the life of me get the damned thing to compile as armv7, just as armv5, regardless of the cross compiler I use... if I go and edit the binary to say v7, insmod fails anyway.
Any hints?

All I need in my life is tun.ko for Fire - I would help - I have no dev experience and only 24 hours of android experience but I'll start having a look in 8 hours or so when I wake up - I'll be starting from scratch but any hints/sources you can point me towards would be awesome.
Only thing I know on this subject apropos tun.ko is that you have to update the kernel afterwards on many systems is that make sense? Remembering five hours ago reading and have literally been hit over the head with something since. I mean literally.

I already have a VPN included from my usenet provider, so it would be no additional fee for me, thats why i would prefer a L2TP/IPsec vpn working on the fire. A shame that amazon just removed the access to the settings - android would have worked perfectly.
Providers aren't a problem for me, as I do my own thing, just want to be able to access the content which I already pay for whilst.I am traveling.
I think I have given up trying to get tun.ko compiled for armv7 though, as I have now spent countless hours on it and must be missing something.very simple.
I need to read up a bit more on the architecture, I think.
Also, why in the hell.did.they.offset.the.spacebar on this thing?

well, I've got it compiling for ARMv7 now, but still not quite there:

Indeed In the meanwhile, we can use only two options-workarounds:
1. DNS cloaking (google it),
2. To have a VPN enabled router for Fire. Not the happiest solution, though... but seems to work.
Update 2015-04-13: PPP Widget 2 now includes support for Android 5.0.x (5.1 not tested)
==================================================================
Update: try PPP Widget 2 (Google Play) if you have driver issues.
==================================================================
I would like to announce a widget that I catered for and tested on the A500. (It should run on other tablets as well, of course.)
It includes everything to connect via phone or 3G modem plugged to the USB host port (usb_modeswitch, pppd and chat).
Edit: New version 0.97 with experimental full network access available.
Edit: New version 0.98 available.
Changes include:
full network access may work on 2.x devices now too
latest usb_modeswitch program and data package included, providing
several new modem configurations
custom config files may be added in "/sdcard/pppwidget/cfg"
improved robustness
Edit: New version 0.99 available.
Changes include:
full network access should work properly on 4.1 devices now
improved robustness on several custom ROMs
Edit: Version 1.00 is now available at Google Play.
Changes include:
No more fixed path to SD card folder
Username and password are no longer mandatory
Translations to German, Portuguese, Dutch and Vietnamese
Additional translations are welcome.
This app will stay cost- and ad-free. As long as I live..

I suppose that is one of the problems caused by Android not knowing "officially" about the working PPP connection. I'd really like to find a way of changing that (and make all apps aware of the connection) without changing central system components like "init.rc" ...

One Request here to make some small change, if it is not too much bother. Whenever the tab sleeps, the modem disconnects too, which is expected. But if you could add another setting for AUTO RECONNECT MODEM, it will be superb. :good:

Hmm, that depends. I'd rather have a consistent look for my widget, no matter where; that includes the icon as the central sign.
But maybe I like your alternative design and will use it as the default ...

No problem m8 , will do if I cooked something up.
Edit.
Strange , the moment I change layout the widget won't install but that is not a big deal.
I got other problem, after a while ( when not used) the widget tabs go blank and the moment I insert my dongle it crashes with message , ppp widget stopped.
for the developer: I am reporting a bug that has to do with a constant message that appears each time I insert the usb dongle saying "the application has stopped" and does not allow me to connect the device. The application has crashed several times. When I reboot the system starts working again just for a while. I am using 0.96 latest version. god bless you.
Note: This is not a complain, it is a suggestion for the developer that can help to improve the software.

Don't really need to use my 3G stick since I can tether my phone while on the road but it's nice to have the option.

although not developed form my tab, i tried and it appears to not install corretly on the acer a510(rooted). no pppwidget dir is create nor can i find the files under their standard directories, ie usb mode switch. as a result just get an error from pppwidget when i plug in a wireless stick.
