[GUIDE] Everything you will need to know for our x8. - XPERIA X8 General

Hello guys,
Im here with another guide!
Now I feel that my other guide was alright, but there was a lot of things that need updating, and I couldn't find where i had put everything. Yes, it sounds a bit starnge but as much as it may heave helped you, there was to much crammed up into 1 space. So i couldnt update like i wanted to. SO, now im back with a more, user friendly guide and more updated guide about everything you need to know about our x8/w8! *cue theme music*
What is android?​This part is for people who are new to android, and their first phone is a x8. So this section is where you n00bs are gonna look:
Android is the world's most popular mobile platform. Android powers over 100000 devices. It is owned and developed by Google. It powers Smartphones and tablet computers.
It is also Linux based system/platform. Android started in 2005, but the unveiling of the Android distribution was in 2007.
Ever since then they have started to build on and on (If you know what i mean)
How many versions of Android are there?​Very good question:
Officially, you have: 1.5 --->1.6 ---> 2.0 ---> 2.1 ---> 2.2 ---> 2.3 ---> 3.0 ---> 4.0
Correct me if i am wrong. Lets see, altogether there is 8!?
Which version's are compatible with the xperia x8​Officially, 1.5 ---> 1.6 ---> 2.0 ---> 2.1
Sony Ericsson said that official Froyo (2.2) on the x8 just keeps making it reboot.
But our developers have made it possible to not only to run froyo (2.2) but we can run GingerBread (2.3) and just about ICS (4.0)
What is a developer?​Silly question but its worth putting it in
A developer is someone who creates/builds custom Android ROM's or/and makes apps.
I myself, am working on my own project but im not gonna release it till its got the essentials complete

How to root​1stly, rooting is what allows you to modify your phone (basically). It gives you superuser access to everything.
how to root your phone:
1st. Download superoneclick *just a quick notice, if your anti-virus finds a 'trojan horse' in that file, disable your anti-virus. The reason for that is because superoneclick is an exploit program. it needs to exploit in order to root your phone. Disable your anti-virus becuase it will mess up the process of rooting your phone*
2nd.Open Superoneclick as administrator.
3rd. Click 'root' and follow the onscreen instructions.
What is a custom ROM?​A custom ROM is a Customized Android project/platform
It can be built from scratch or can be based on someone elses.
There are Many different features that it has compared to stock ROM (original android system).It could have modules,cool framework and much much more!
How do install a custom ROM?​Well its Simple:
First you need to have a recovery installed: Xrecovery then flash a rom that has dual recovery so you have the special and popular ClockWorkMod recovery. Click here (thanks to zdzihu for Xrecovery) (and thanks to unic0de for clockworkmod (click here for clockworkmod) )
Once a recovery or both are installed, download the ROM you desire, then place it in your sd card. NOT in any folders, just the root of your SD CARD
once that is done, boot into your recovery, go to: choose zip ---> choose from SD CARD ---> then choose your zip. click yes, and wait.
If it does not automatically do a full wipe, do a full wipe. If your not meant to do a full wipe, then leave it. Reboot and enjoy
What is a Android Kernel?​Android kernel is a linux based kernel that the phone manages its power from. it controls the power and battery on your phone. Its simply to explain i guess, but installing a custom kernel 'aint'
WARNING ABOUT UNLOCKING 2011/2012 PHONE'S BOOTLOADER'S​I should have remembered about this. And so i have. Here goes. I need to tell you that about a hardware imposed danger to hard brick your Xperia X8 and W8, applies to E15i/a and E16i/a, at the attempt to unlock your bootloader boot loader!
The phones affected by the problem are units being manufactured at 11W29 and after!
To check if your device is affected by the problem follow this simple steps:
1.Turn off the phone and open it up
2.Take out the battery
3.Look at the sticker below
If the date code on the sticker reads 11W29, or any later date (11W30, 11W31, 11W32, 11W33, ...), DO NOT attempt to unlock the boot loader.
These phones ship with a revamped chipset configuration having the security hole the boot loader unlock uses effectively closed. This means that upon unlocking the boot loader your phone will end up as a hard brick - and you will have NO means to revive the phone yourselves. You either have to send it off to Sony Ericsson for repair (recommended solution) or find a phone repair shop being able to resurrect shot devices!
The symptom you will experience when unlocking the boot loader on an affected device is like this:
The boot loader unlock will most likely go through fine
At restart the phone will show NO signs of life anymore.
NO LED, NO LCD output, NO vibration.
WE HAVE WARNED YOU, YOU ARE ON YOUR OWN AT DOING STUFF TO YOUR BOOTLOADER NOW, IF YOUR X8/W8 ENDS UP IN HARD BRICK BECAUSE YOU DIDN'T FOLLOW THIS, THEN GOOD LUCK TELLING SE WHAT YOU DID. UNLESS YOUR GONNA LIE!​Original thread that i got this from (thanks b.jay)

How to install a custom Kernel​first, you need to unlock your bootloader:
Then you need to download flashtool 2.9.1 (i think you can download it through b.jay's mediafire folder)
1. Download the custom Kernel
2.put the .ftf file in flashtool ---> firmwares
3.Open flashtool
4.Click 'flash'
5.Choose your kernel
6. Follow the onscreen instructions
7: ENJOY!!!!

I guess you should define the terms first...
ROM Cookers (also known as ROM Chefs) are actually the guys (or gals) who _REALLY_ build their own ROMs out of the source and even code up extensions or add features. Take nobodyAtall, doixanh, paul-xxx or larkkarl as an example here - that are REAL devs. alfsamsung, who "just" provides a kernel, is also a REAL developer.
The others who take a ROM to only mod it into the shape they so much desire or feel like to satisfy a particular itch (which is the majority of ROMs you will find in the development section) aren't ROM Cookers or ROM Chefs per se (in my opinion) - they are "Modders". They only add or remove packages to a pre-built ROM.
However, the definition of a "Dev" seems to be very blurred in XDA terms.

Hey Ace Lovers...
some of you already knew, for the Rest : I fell in Love with the "Clean Android|AOSP" Stuff provided by Slaid480 and EmoBoiix3..
The only Problem with it was
- not yet flashable
- no brightness and soundlevel
I used the Rom for some days and really liked everything but for me
- Lockscreen sucked (at least after Factoryreset)
- I missed all the nice Settings
Somebody mentioned to restore CyanogenSettings so I tried just to add Cyanogen Parts to it (CM Parts/Settings/Settingsprovider) CM Screenshots was included already..
..it worked
Now, I added some, I think, nice features to it..
- Apps & Framework are deodexed
- zImage-Mod v1.1
- Old Market (Marketupdater deleted)
- Google Maps 5.8 (don't update)
- Center Clock
- Batterymod
- Cyanogen Settings
somebody just startet to get nervous...wait, don't panic, Credits will be given in the very End ;-)
Let's talk about the way to get this on your Ace..
- Download the Rom from second Post (Sunday)
- Place it somewhere on your SD Card (somewhere you can find it later...will you !?)
- reboot your Phone into Recovery (CWM Recovery required)
- Please : Backup your current Rom !
- Now we will see if you had a good spot for my flashfile...can you find it ?
- Once you found it, flash it and wait
- After Installation has finished, please reboot
- the first boot will take a while don't panic !
For a reason that's out of reach of my knowledge, you will see no statusbar at first start. Please, finish the Google Setup Progress and once, you've finished it, just reboot again, the Statusbar will be there and...you will like it (hopefully)

Yes, till I find a better Solution without 3rd Party Software, this will work I guess (thanks to EmoBoiix3)

A: No, I am absolutly shy in reality and kids and wife keep me pretty busy but.. this Rom is kinda different to others as it does not come with much for the eye but a lot of options to build up on. About 86Mb of free Systemspace and about 130 Mb free Dataspace..
Q: Will there be updates ? And when ?
A: Yes, I have planes for the future, but this will all happen in small, flashable Files. Some Frameworkmodifications, Iconchanging and a few more Apps. When ? I will let you know ;-)

im a big fanof this AOSP ROM. I have put it on mine and a friends Ace. we love it but the lock screen sucks, can you tell me a easy way to get the slide lock back. many thanks man

The Cyanogenmod Parts + Settings should bring the lock screen settings back , as what the OP did

Yes, it is you.. Probably I didn't say it right, I used parts of your Statusbar, not visible ones, it was a XML file I found by luck when I flashed your file from here while I had problems with my own...I really don't know what happened but it fixed my overlay and symbol delay problem.. so, thank you, whatever you did

but you can also find a flashable file here. Just flash it over your AOSP and you will have the missing Parts !

I searched through the build.prop but found no traces lol Slaid has done a good job with it
But I think it is 7.2...
For OC Kernels, please make a backup and then try, I can't tell if it works but it would be nice if you report back about it.
For Scripts, I don't see why there should be problems with it, please, always backup your Rom and try

Maybe missing Google Talk ? I will try to find the solution but I can't promise..If EmoBoiix3 says GoSMS Pro helps, maybe you want to try..

I can confirm "cm-blackhawk-kernel.zip" is working. Set max Freq to 883 / Set at boot in Cyanogen Settings worked for me but I can't tell about stability or Batteryusage ;-)

Batery life seems ok but need more days to confirm.

I did this, but after the bootloop with blackhawk i flashed the OC kernel from 7.1 cyanogem Grif's rom and worked, thanks for the help

BlaclHawk worked, Lagfree and turboboost working (at least the tweeks are in the init.d), and framework.zip (that one who increases the number stages volume) worked too.

How is it?
People after all this time what is yur feedback about the rom?
I like it. Its fast and it does not need things like scripts for this or for that.
I tryed many and now i have to do a new install BUT now i know what to install or not .

Neither Team Inferno, or Cyanogenmod Team, or anyone else that was involved in this project is responsible for you device. ​Please be nice as this is my first ROM for SGH-I897.
So what is this? This is CM9, compiled and tabletized by the Team.
The stock Android keyboard that comes with the rom after flashing this mod is all distorted. I'd suggest downloading this one which works and looks fine.​
Note: This ROM can certainly be used as a Daily Driver, however, everything is small. That we cannot fix because of the smaller screen size that we have. However, this is still fun nonetheless, if you don't mind the small stuff.
CyanogenMod is based on the Android Open Source Project with extra contributions from many people within the Android community. It can be used without any need to have any Google application installed. Linked below is a package that has come from another Android project that restore the Google parts. CyanogenMod does still include various hardware-specific code, which is also slowly being open-sourced anyway.

Installation
- First time flashing ICS to your Galaxy S (or coming from another ROM)?
Root your device and install ClockworkMod Recovery.
Reboot into Recovery using 3-button-combo
Do a Nandroid backup!
WIPE (wipe data/factory reset + wipe cache partition)
Install the ROM from internal sdcard using ClockworkMod Recovery
Optionally install the Google Addon
WIPE again or Calendar Sync will not work.
- Upgrading from CM7?
Do a Nandroid Backup!
WIPE (wipe data/factory reset + wipe cache partition)
Install the ROM from internal sdcard using ClockworkMod Recovery

Downloaded and installed. But all I am getting is just a regular ICS UI. I did not get a tablet UI and as mentioned in op, I do not see any option to autohide status bar.

Working fine so far. Tried increasing the LCD density, it makes the UI regular ICS, so we have to keep the density at 128!

i understand where you're coming from. like stated before, this ROM can be used as a Daily Driver, if you can stand the small screen. but my original point in this ROM was to see if i could do it. and we did it
i do understand the "pain" of such a small screen though.. sorry about that :/

One quick mod to the OP, to change font size you need to go to "Settings/System"

Nothing ROM related. The latest gaaps 20120429 doesn't have Gmail...

People like me find it really impossible to switch back from ics to gb permanently. And its also impossible for me to keep using ics, with poor video recording and playback, GPS wakelock bug, crappy game performance and buggy bluetooth. Features:
Apart from the existing features which were there in the original app, this has:
ROM switching:
This app changes kernels by creating boot.img backups and flashing them. Flashing hardly takes a second in gingerbread. In ics and higher, it may take a bit longer.
ROM zip modder (to flash directly sd-ext):
You can use this app to modify your ROM zip to flash directly to sdext. You can flash it with any recovery. The modified rom zip will have multirom embedded in its boot image. So, no need to flash multirom after installing every rom.
This method is experimental.
A few points worth noting here:
-- Modded zip names will have the prefix "mrom-".
-- The boot image (with multirom in it) of the last modded zip is stored at /sdcard/multirom/tmp_boot.img. You can simply rename it with any file manager.

How to install a new ROM in sd card
Just use the app to mod a ROM zip and flash the modded zip in recovery.
Simplified instructions for first time users
I have tested this method with cm9(arjen's nightlies) , cm10(rasheed's rom) , cm7(gingerblur) and stock roms(dynamite and resurrection).
Long method (only if the above process fails with certain ROMs):
Its somewhat similar to the original process here.
- If you haven't, perform up to step 2 of the original guide.
- Make nandroid backup (ur gonna need this). Wipe. flash ROM which you wanna to have on SDcard.
- Flash multirom.zip, even if you did earlier ( because everything gets wiped after flashing the ROM ). Get multirom.zip from http://tasssadar.github.com/multirom
- Backup ROM's boot.img with recovery (preferably AmonRA, because it lets u do selective backup). you need to copy the file to /sdcard/multirom/ later.
- Go to "MultiROM options" menu and select "Create from current ROM".
- Restore nandroid backup from beginning of this step and reboot.
How to switch ROMs:
1. (Only if you haven't done this before) Backup boot.img of current ROM
2.
Warning: To backup/restore a boot image, you need at least 160 MB of free RAM. This is not a big deal in gb (where u have 300+ MB of RAM). But in ics, you may need to free up RAM using a taskkiller. A bad flash will make your device unbootable. (you will still be able to boot in recovery though)

i think his he work or well said he grave multirom app already existed and make it to flash boot.img and others changes..
so i think its he work too of course tassadar start all and even if he just mod app well he made a hell of a job because in multirom we cant have diferents kernels now we can...
but arnaby can explain better but thanks for this mod it really make my day yesterday lool.

Of course, its my work. But the original idea was Tassadar's. Without his "Updater" thing, i couldnt have done this.

No its not that slow maybe in the begining and speed of your sdcard should be class4 at least mine is and its not that slow try it...
As four sd life well yes like a lot of stuff we already do decrease is life but im my opinion that of sd card life and other stuff like baterir etc kind a myth with a litle truth of course.

Now I am going to introduce it's 2nd version. In looks, both are identical but you can feel the difference while handling. I have used a lot of ROMs from here and I really loved each of them, but mostly I found my phone buggy after using them for more than a week. I actually stopped working on ROM due to my exams but I have to make one for myself. Which must be stable, fast without OC, smooth like butter and beautiful. So I am introducing another version of my work ElegantPerformer V2 by Adwait.

Few words from me:
I tried my best to keep the ROM away from bugs. Only one thing you may need to do is updating superuser binary. It will update by itself, just allow it to do so.I hope you like this ROM. Those who are already satisfied with your current ROM, just make a backup of the current ROM and then TRY this ROM. I am sure you will love this! Let me know if you find any trouble using it. Hey dude, It's look wise same But if the main source is itself changed then I think starting new thread is best choice. I know the rules but my 1st version was based on vo-1's odexed and this one is based on CM7.2's original nightly published on 1/1/2013. So I have to make a new thread! And I think I should! what say?
Edit: And also the Fire Kernel used in this ROM is OC. In v1 it was not an OC.

Did ur rom supports Tamil language? This version is deodexed?

Nope.
It should still be an update to the other thread.
As long as your rom has the same name you cant create a new thread. Be it a change in kernel or base rom itself

Yes! but it will be a partial support. It will not render font 100% but it can be read.

Is that mandatory? I never used it. And to keep this ROM lightweight I have to skip additions which can be added later. I am glad you would like to try this ROM. I will wait to get feedback from your side!

Of course you don't HAVE to use AdrenalineEngine, I just never had the feeling that it would do any damage to integrate it
1) On first boot I could not enter my PIN, all I could do was take out the battery and restart.
2) With every restart I get an error-message, something about bluetooth (I don't know if this important, I don't think it has any effect on the rest of the phone)
3) Whenever I want to go into the synchronisation-settings (I hope thats what its called in english) the phone reboots. (I think this might be a CM 7.2 Nightly error, and not your fault )
For now I have the feeling that it runs very smooth, and I like the way it looks.
Will test it for a few more days and maybe stick to it

Did you cleared cache, dlavik cache 1st? After your reply I am going to test my ROM again but the errors you mentioned are completly new! They shouldn't be there. And I flashed my ROM almost 6 times during testing. So please make sure you have CWM5 or more, all data wiped, cache wiped, dalvik cache wiped!
Edit:
I just successfully flashed ROM. No error message about Bluetooth or anything found! Safely navigated through each part of settings without any reboot. USB tethering also works fine!
So I strongly recommend you to follow these steps:
Boot in recovery CWM 5

Why are there two versions of GingerDX?
One version is for stock kernel, the other one for custom kernels
Which one should I use?
Well, it’s pure logic If you are on stock kernel, flash the stock version, if you are on a custom kernel, use the custom version.

Keep calm. Enter CWM and restore a Backup or reflash the ROM again.
If you can’t enter CWM, reflash using Flashtool or SEUS.

On custom kernel:
Have you flashed the right kernel?
--> GDX v28 and earlier: LinuxDX or Alfs v08a GDX/Alfs v09c WLAN
--> GDX v29 and later: nAa 14 or Alfs v08a CM7/Alfs v09c CM7
Why is the Auto-Brightness not working?
If you’re on Alfs kernel, have you flashed the libsensor Patch?
Why does my LED not blink like it should?
Just delete the file "/system/lib/hw/lights.shakira.so" and reboot.
Now it should work correctly.
Shall I use Supercharger?
You can, but it’s not recommended. The ROM is already tweaked, to get the best overall performance. If you use it, it’s your own responsibility and do NOT post some “bugs” which only you have got, because of using supercharger
Will the app “xxx” be included in the next version?
To make you happy: maybe…
To be realistic: the probability it pretty low
How can I delete system apps?
You can delete system apps by using a root explorer to delete the desired app from /system/apps/
But BE CAREFUL what you delete! Delete on your own risk!
What’s KSM?
You can read the exact explanation here
Or in short: it gives a performance boost (because it makes processes share the “same pages” with other processes --> less CPU calculation) and reduces the RAM consumption (--> pages are shared, no multiple copies)

I'm reading the word "official" so I guess you have, you could have taken the other thread and update it as Lucas is not that active here anymore and he have gave permissions for his threads.
There is no reason for two FAQ threads about gingerdx. So maybe mods should close the other one. Just saying its obviously up to mods.
And as a suggestion,you can add some links in order to make your thread more newbie friendly ,for example you can put a link for a more detailed unbricking guide.

well, i did this thread, because eagleeyetom asked me to do it
and it's a bit short, because the idea came eet last night, because of the much problems, because many people didn't flashed gapps... so i had pretty less time.... but i will work on it for sure

:thumbup: as long as eet allows it. lots of x8 users use gdx so i hope this thread tackles the issues with regards to the rom.

I Have Downloaded The GingerDX-V030-Shakira-Stock, When I First Get Started , It Did'nt Call Me To Log In Into Google , And When I Unlocked My Sim Card And Get Into The Phone , My Google Play Cant Function At All , The Page Of Downloaded Application Is Empty. I Have Installed standard-settings-stock And Gallery_update And My Problem On Settings And Gallery Are Solved . The Only Problem Is I Cant Log In And Have Google Play To Install Application. if you're using wifi, & if your phone locked(Phone goes to black screen) that wifi is automatically goes off & if your phone is standby(unlock) your wifi it's automatically turn on again
it's normal thing

thanks for the tip...but unluckly wifi setting isn't correlated to hotspot settings in locked status (standby). I found other users had same problems with other roms and phones, the solution they found is this app that allow to use cpu and wifi also when phone is in standby (locked)

i have encountered this problem only on ginger dx v30, and i have reinstall this rom twice
when i wake the device up, somehow the lockscreen widget is not visible, but it is there, i can unlock it due to the vibration that i felt... and sometimes, when i try to either reboot or power off the device, pressing the power button, but no menu is visible, but i know its there, because i tap randomly on screen, and then another menu to choose either reboot or reboot the recovery pop out. im using this on alfsv09c and i have install this correctly, anyone knows why this happen?
