[Q] ADHOC + wireless Tether ??? Confused - Acer Iconia A500

OK.. my knowledge of Tablets and rooting are limited.
I have an ACER A500 and my current android system is 3.0.1. I am rooted with clockwork MOD... No Custom ROM as of yet.
I have a Samsung Galaxy SII (Epic Touch from sprint), which is also rooted... no custom ROM
All I want to do is have my Tablet connect to my phones hotspot... does my tablet need the ADHOC fix/patch to do this?
I downloaded the wifi tether app for my phone and the tablet was UNABLE to see it, however my tablet can see, connect and use my wifi network at home.
Not sure if this is a questions for the Samsung Forum or ACER. I did a few searches for "Adhoc" and "what is adhoc" to get a better understanding of what it is... So far i can only come up with that its one of two methods of wifi networking.
What is needed to allow my A500 to connect to my cell phones wifi tether ?? I wasnt sure if i needed to download a ROM that had ADHOC integrated in it or not.

First off: A WiFi Adhoc network is basically a normal WiFi network, only it doesn't use a dedicated AP (like those WiFi router & AP devices you'll normaly use to create a network), but the WiFi network adaptor of a computer (or tablet, or cellphone).
In your case, the AP is the cellphone, so it will need some kind of software to switch its WiFi adaptor into AP mode. Your tab can then connect normally to the AP, no patches needed. The reverse way (only interesting to A501 users, as we have 3g / 4g network) is best done with the patch you mentioned, as this gives us the settings Acer removed back (they left the entire WiFi stack untouched, but removed access to the tethering settings).
As for switching your Phone's WiFi to AP mode: It may be that Samsung left the neccessary parts in their Android distribution. In this case you can activate it under settings -> Wireless and Networks -> tethering & portable hotspot. If they didn't, you can use apps like barnacle WiFi tether to achive the same effect... though encryption might be a problem if wpa_supplicant (the linux way of managing secure WiFi connections, which runs as a part of the WiFi stack) is missing.

Here is the file you need flash with cwm or ra as normal or follow these instructions.
1. navigate to system/bin and copy wpa_supplicant
2. past this to your sd card as a backup
3. rename wpa_supplicant to wpa_supplicant.old
4. extract the file from the download and past it into the system/bin folder. (should be wpa_supplicant)
4. Long press on the file once copied
6. select Permissions and set to User: RWE, Group & Others:RE only

Thank you, i'm going to try this, but I wonder if its my phone rather, not my tablet. Because My laptop can't see my phones wifi tether either. They make a patch for my phone..so I may try that first.

Wi-Fi tethering on Atrix

I want to use wi-fi tethering on my Atrix4g.
my phone is not rooted and still using motoblur.the version is 4.1.83.and I'm not in USA anymore ...
could anyone help me with this issue ?
I think you will need to root your phone. For rooting 1.8.3, you'll need to use GingerBreak - which unfortunately will wipe one or both of your SD cards (internal, external), so backup first. Search for GingerBreak in the dev section.
After rooting, you can use any of the wi-fi tethering apps, e.g. Barnacle.
Without rooting, I am afraid you will be stuck with USB tethering.
are u sure that I will be able to tether after rooting the device ?
what do u mean by USB tethering?how is it related to this ?

Yes, I am sure since I did it. There are several apps in the market for Wi-Fi tethering - all of them require root. (These apps may not be available, though, if you have an AT&T SIM in your phone.)
There are two more ways to tether: USB and Bluetooth. Both mean you share your connection with a PC, by either connecting to your phone via USB or via bluetooth. Both, however, require that you install a piece of software on your PC to make it work. Also, USB tethering apps are not free. (E.g., EasyTether.) The advantage is that you do not require root.

You must have a sdcard in your phone for Gingerbreak to work. This will almost certainly wipe your internal sdcard so back up anything you want from there, but will not wipe your external sdcard. You will also need sideloading enabled to install Barnacle or WiFi Tether > GladEnabler. You will also need adb on your PC. Follow the instructions in the GladEnabler post.
1. Download Gingerbreak.exe to your PC from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1046626. Make sure you get the .exe and not the .apk. Link to Gingerbreak.exe is at bottom of the first post.
2. Turn on USB Debugging on your phone : Settings > Applications > Development > USB Debugging checkmark.
3. Connect your phone to your PC with USB cable > wake up phone (i.e. not on lock screen) > pull down notification bar > select USB connection > select None.
4. Run Gingerbreak.exe on your PC. (Note you will not get any notification it has completed).
5. On your phone select the application drawer > scroll down to Gingerbreak > select and run Gingerbreak. You should now be rooted and can uninstall Gingerbreak.
6. To check if you are rooted use this > Root Checker
7. Here is Barnacle > Barnacle Site. Do not download from Market. Click on (or here) on the webpage.
8. Here is WiFi Tether > WiFi Tether. Download latest version.
you were very clear.n now m rooted.Thank you !

Would this work on an Atrix running system 4.5.91?
Not as far as I know. I obtained root through pudding.
Beamed from WinBorg 4G via XDA Premium
these apk's and updates work with GB2.3.5. and kernels. i have 2.3.5 and 1.45 kernel and it works for me. if any one wanted to know.

Alternative to Kies - Samba Filesharing

Given the MTP limitation on the GT 7.7, the only "stock" way to get data onto the Tab is via Kies.
A much more elegant solution is to install "Samba Filesharing" (free app on Android Market) which turns the GT 7.7 into a full SMB server that you can mount -- I did so with my MacBook Air. You can then copy files across via WiFi (no USB cable!).
You may need to perform the SD card hack listed elsewhere in this forum to write to the SD card when it's mounted (even via SMB)...I didn't have any luck until I did that.
Of course there are other alternatives such as Dropbox (or my fave Sugarsync) but these require a sync to the cloud and then a download, which both eat into your broadband data (caps) if you're worried about such things.
Just thought I would share!
Why not use AirDroid? Imo the best tool out there. And you can manage SMS, contacts,... everything too with it!
^ I tried AD and don't like the web interface. The nice thing about Samba is that it's integrated into the Finder so you can use the native file copy tools. Makes batch copying a breeze.
Thanks for this info, I always assumed that the Tab7.7 also had the debug mode where I can just plug it in like the Galaxy phones, any links to that mounting options for the Sd card?
adb push anyone?

Unfortunately not. MTP mode only. If you are on Windows, you can still use explorer to copy, but on Macs you must use Kies...which is why Samba is a better option for me.
Id prefer a file copy over wireless so I need to know how to use that Samba thing..
ES file manager allows you to administer files from the tab and access network shares including streaming 1080p mkv files. Pretty nifty, but doesn't mount the tab.
What's the speed of "Samba Filesharing" ?
I use DooBlou Wifi file explorer (was one of Amazon.com's free apps of the day) to dump files from my Mac to the Tab. You have to be rooted to write to the external SD card, as with other non-bundled apps, however.
adb push
adb wifi
webkey

Thanks although I've got it already. Don't blame me because I've googled it by an hour with no result before asked here.
Now I've problem with launching both ZT 180 and Adhoc enabler.
ZT 180 report "the file which should be modified by the app are not presented at its expected location"..
Ad hoc enabler report "unable to write file system under read/write mode"
I'm using Kindle Fire stock rom 6.2.1, rooted, Busy Box installed.
Any idea for my problem.
allthrough i used it with 6.2.1 i don't know why you don't update to 6.2.2
this should correct any misssing files also
would recommend to use the nfx update for this:

btw. what do you mean with "zt180 and adhoc enabler" ? - you only need zt180 on the kf - it enables adhoc mode

Hey,
I've been trying to get the wifi to work with my ad hoc network after installing the Energy CM9 rom
It's said in the thread that adhoc wifi is supported, but I can't see nor connect to my adhoc network.
I'll try a CM7 rom to test. Meanwhile, any help would be greatly appreciated
Thx
Sorry for the stupid question, but what is the practical use for Kindle with adhoc wi-fi enabled. Internet connection tethering to the other device that has problems connecting directly? I am new in all this and now I have Kindle with ICS CM9 flashed - rom that supports adhoc wi-fi. So now I am just curious, does it do any good and how can I use it.

It's not a question of better or worse network. Wifi networks can typically be configured in either Infrastructure or Adhoc mode.
In infrastructure, the network is centralized around an access point, which is in most cases a router. All the devices connect to this particular access point and all the data exchanged between the devices on this network will go through the access point. For example, if pc A wants to send data to pc B, it's going to be:
pc A ----> Access Point ----> pc B.
In adhoc, there is no central point for the network. The devices communicate directly with each other. For the same example as before, it would be:
pc A ----> pc B
The thing is, I receive internet through a 4G usb adapter plugged into my PC, and I configured my pc to share the internet connection over the wifi. Windows allows to do that quite easily, but my network card (or its driver, or Windows 7... I'm not sure who's at fault here...) only allows me to create an Adhoc network. So here I am, with my 4G usb adapter shared through an adhoc wifi network. It works great: 2 PCs and 2 phones can connect to the Adhoc wifi and receive internet through it without any problem.
However, I can't get my kindle fire to connect to it. I've tried several solutions and adhoc enablers... without success.
@braintrap: Can you give me a link to the rom you used if it works to connect to an adhoc network ?
And to answer your question "does it do any good and how can I use it." No! There is no advantages of using an adhoc network if your current wifi network works well. Just enjoy
Has anyone succeeded to connect to an adhoc with a Kindle Fire ? If yes, what rom was running (stock, CM7, CM9....) ?
Thanks for any help.
Hi...
I've tried with Hashcode's, Energy and AOKP Rom's and none of the see my iPhone's Personal Hotspot.
I'm really looking forward to sharing the iphone's data plan with the Kindle in order to use it for RSS Reading and browsing anywhere!!

[Q] Choosing ADB over USB or WiFi, when Rooting

After reading around, I've learnt that MinimalTouch 1.1beta5 is a reliable way to root my new Nook Simple Touch. Since I intend selecting the package version in the beta5 folder, I must choose between the "START" zips: beta5-2 XUFullTouch-PART-1-START and beta5-2 XWFullTouch-PART-1-START. I gather the first zip is ADB over USB, and the second, ADB over WiFi, but have found little documentation on either, except that ADB is a method to connect your home computer to your Nook.
The above link states that all W zips install ADB wireless Uramdisk, and all U zips install ADB USB Uramdisk + ADB widget to enable wireless adb at need. Am I right that ADB over USB is the best choice because both USB and WiFi are available after rooting? If so, would anyone select the ADB over WiFi option?
Can someone please explain how and why one chooses between the two options when rooting the Nook?
On startup the ADB daemon, adbd looks at the property service.adb.tcp.port
If it is set it uses that value as the port number over TCP (presumably over WiFi) to listen for connections.
If it is not set it tries to connect over USB.
I'm not sure how these applications that switch mode work.
They probably kill the daemon and restart it.
The only difference between the two versions of W and U is the line:
Code:
service.adb.tcp.port=5555

Thanks for your help. I've taken a while to make sense of your post since all this is new to me - I rarely use a mobile phone.
I've just looked at contents of both the "START" zip files and noticed they're the same, except that the file uRamdisk in the folder boot of the WiFi option is marginally bigger. You have shown me the difference lies in the property service.adb.tcp.port in the Java source code, and that property determines whether the rooted Nook tries to connect by WiFi or USB. In other words, the two zips are identical except for ADB connection.
But my opening post, in ignorance, attempted to ask a more trivial question. I know whenever I wish to access any laptop computer from my desktop computer under Windows XP, I can connect the two using a network cable from the laptop to my wireless router/modem or, more simply, by activating WiFi on the laptop. Similarly, I am assuming I can connect the rooted Nook to my desktop either by cabling the Nook microUSB port to a USB port on my desktop, or by activating WiFi on the Nook. I expect to connect every few days. Since the USB "START" zip of MinimalTouch 1.1beta5 provides an ADB widget to enable wireless adb at need, what is the point - for the end user - of a separate WiFi only "START" zip file?
In other words, in routinely connecting my rooted Nook to the desktop computer every few days, why on earth would I or anyone benefit from having had the two "START" zip options available in MinimalTouch 1.1beta5?

Bootloop Amazon Fire HD 10 (2017)

I have recently tried to root the new Fire HD 10 (2017). Unfortunately i've got today a bootloop. This little guide is for Linux. The principle stays the same, so you can apply this also on Windows. Here's what i did to resolve the problem:
1. Download adb on computer (here is for linux: dl.google.com/android/repository/platform-tools-latest-linux.zip ) & unpack
2. Download the 5.5.0.0 firmware for HD10(2017) from HERE : fireos-tablet-src.s3.amazonaws.com/afKacHmumxrMp9XPdw6oykKMaw/update-kindle-40.5.9.1_user_591450020.bin
3. Rename that in update.zip and place in the same folder with adb
4. Open terminal in the same folder with adb
5. Connect your device to the computer
6. Enter recovery mode on Tablet (Power + Vol Up) & go to install update from ADB
7. Go on computer and run in the opened terminal: ./adb sideload update.zip
8. Wait till the process is finished, restart and enjoy

I attempted the same activity and ran into the same issue (using different rooting methods, even though it has been stated no root is currently available), I can also confirm reloading the OS using the stock image works.
I don't think it really matters but I didn't rename the *.bin file to a *.zip; I used the following command (on Windows):
<ADB Tools working dir>\adb.exe sideload <path to bin>\update-kindle-40.5.9.1_user_591450020.bin
On a side note, with the release of FireOS 5.6.0.0, I am trying to hold my device at 5.5.0.0 in the event that a root method is discovered. The setup wizard doesn't allow you to skip the wireless setup, after connecting to a wireless network it wants to check for "system updates" - to work around this, I used my cellular hotspot, after connecting my kindle to the hotspot, it got me passed the wireless connection screen, where it then started to check for updates. I immediately turned off the hotspot. This allowed me to get past the setup wizard and prevent system updates/checks. (I suppose someone could setup a temp access point that doesn't have a connection or route to the internet, but I haven't tested this method.)
I installed G Play, G Services, G Framework apk's and NoRootFirewall. Once I blocked all of the Amazon Apps, I connected my kindle to my regular wireless network and the device hasn't been able to download 5.6.0.0.
That being said, on a side of caution, I turn off wireless when I turn off the tablet, to ensure that NoRootFirewall is up and running before connecting to WiFi on next boot. The device was able to start a download of 5.6.0.0 once and I had to boot into recovery to clear the partial/complete download of the OTA update to 5.6.0.0.

I can confirm that connecting to a router with no internet access will indeed allow you to get past the wifi setup portion. I bought an HD 10 7th gen. a few weeks ago and in order to prevent any updates before I could get a firewall installed, I plugged in an old router I had lying around. Once connected to the 'dummy' router I was able to continue setup.
As for disabling wifi before rebooting - I use NoRoot DF and have granted it usage access permission and never have any issues rebooting with wifi left on. This is certainly no guarantee that it is safe and I definitely wouldn't advise doing this if you haven't granted uap to your firewall, I'm simply sharing that I have had no issues.
Hi I ran into a bootloop while trying to get Xposed Framework. I get an "error: closed" in the terminal when I try to access adb shell. I have tried kill-server and it still wont work
