Cannot obtain root on stock Kindle ROM - Kindle Fire General

When I have my KF (6.2.2) plugged into KFU 0.9.3 it shows "adb root: yes" but when I try to run something that requires root access I get the no root access error.
Sent from my VS910 4G using XDA App

did you install permanent root with superuser (point 3) ?

Also make certain you have jcase's BurritoRoot3 in the Kindle Fire Utility folder called "files." Anything below BurritoRoot3 will not successfully root version 6.2.2. If you have all of this, and KFU shows your connected device as Online, with ADB Root, and in Bootmode 4000, you may have to backup and reflash if you have TWRP and FireFireFire installed. If not, you may have to reset the Fire to factory defaults.

[Q] Fire Bricked; No shell root

I was attempting to root my 6.2.1 and successfully had superuser installed and rooted. When I tried moving the Android Marketplace into the /system/apps/ folder it wouldn't appear so I checked all the write permissions and still no luck. I reverted back but must have deselected all of the permissions because now in my /systems/ folder the /app permissions are d---------.
The result is the Fire is stuck on the "Kindle Fire" boot screen and will go no further. When I try all of the fixes it prevents me from going into the adb shell as root, with either a "Stopped (signal)" or "Segmentation fault" error when I type in "su" or "su -".
None of the other tools such as zergRush work because they can't write to the file system and can't elevate to shell root in order to do so. This thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1356257 doesn't work either because in order to gain temp root, it requires zergRush. Any help on gaining shell root would be appreciated and any additional details can be provided.
Did you try the lastest KF utility v.7? Your not alone with this problem...
I'm in the same boat as you. I tried for 2 days to fix it to no avail and finally decided I was SOL without one of of these "factory cables". The other day I did a support chat with amazon and they are sending me a new kindle. My main gripe with the kindle is there is no way to easily factory reset because of the lack of hardware buttons. Think I'm gonna wait for a cyanogenmod 9 rom before I mess with the replacement... Good luck.

Had this problem last night
Already trying to hack your Christmas present?
I had this problem last night. Stuck on boot screen and powering down and up didnt fix. This is what what fixed it for me.
Go into CMD and type this, with the kindle connect via usb,
fastboot -i 0x1949 oem idme bootmode 4000
fastboot -i 0x1949 reboot
Used KF Utility 6
I haven't had success with v7 yet, but will try when I get back. I had trouble with KF Util on Windows 7 so went back to XP. Will try Ubuntu next because it's easier to navigate the command line. Is there any difference between v6 and 7 with respect to elevating shell privileges?
Yeah follow the command... I think we are stuck on fastboot!
Well at least I'm not the only one who did this. Same issue... Tried to copy the marketplace APK and it wouldn't appear. Changed permissions and am now stuck at boot splash. Executing "fastboot -i 0x1949 oem idme bootmode 4000" simply hangs at "<waiting for device>".
No shell root, no progress
I've tried unrooting with KF utility v7 to no avail. One problem could be that I had Burrito Root on the Fire prior to the bricking, but how I can remove it at this point is beyond me. I can't run the fastboot commands without being in shell root, and KFUtilityv7 doesn't work without those credentials.
Some errors: "(idme) Invalid permission"; "reboot: Operation not permitted". These are seen when I try to put it in recovery mode. FYI, my ADB status is online and my computer sees it, the ADB Rooted status says "No" and I'm in Boot Status 4000 (Normal).
When I try running BurritoRoot it goes through a process, says "Elevating the Shell" and then errors out with "adbd cannot run as root in production builds"
Then below this it says "Root Activated" and "The Kindle is successfully in root mode."
Here is the output from my attempts at installing Permanent Root with KFUtility v7:
***********************************************
* Root Activated *
***********************************************
The kindle is successfully running in root mode.
mount: Operation not permitted
mount: Operation not permitted
failed to copy 'files\su' to '/system/xbin/su': Read-only file system
Unable to chmod /system/xbin/su: Read-only file system
Unable to chmod /system/xbin/su: Read-only file system
2114 KB/s (843503 bytes in 0.389s)
Error: Could not access the Package Manager. Is the system running?
***********************************************
* Root Installed *
***********************************************
Permanent root has been installed.
With great power, comes great responsibility.
Please be careful with how you use root.
It is HIGHLY recommended you have TWRP installed before using root.
****************************************************
At this point you can see the mount operations were not successful because you cannot gain root in the shell with su. I am going to try this through my Ubuntu build and see if I can gain privileges through Linux.
Hi. Same problem here. Changed the /system/app permissions by mistake and the Fire won´t pass the loading screen.
I think the only hope we have is that someone finds a way to root from adb.
According to GregDDC:
GregDDC said:
I had the same issue and fixed it with a recovery cable.
The process was simple, just short the 1st and 4th pins on a microUSB cable and boot into recovery/fastboot. You can find all the information here (link) and here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1392693&page=3). I accomplished everything using Kindle Fire Tools.7 I hope this helps.

I have the same problem. I get the boot-loop with the kindle fire logo. I can access the file system, but most commands give me a seg or permission error. ZergRush doesn't work so fast boot won't work.
I'm trying to get a factory programming cable off here or make my own. That should bypass the whole root issue and put you directly into fast boot so you can load a kindle rom or cm7 or whatever.
Think I'll wait for my wife to go to work tomorrow so I can spend the day working on a cable without distraction. ;-)

Seriously, you most likely don't need the Factory cable to fix your problems. Just do some more reading. There are more than enough threads on these issues to provide you with a clue on how to get out of or into what you are trying to do.
Care to give us a clue on the solution then? I have scoured both this and other threads.

If you cant boot into the OS, you cant get root again.
If you cant boot into TWRP, you cant get it fixed.
If you were romping around with root, with no recovery installed, its likely bricked.
Get a factory cable, or send it back. Learn from the mistake and install a recovery.
Exactly correct (unfortunately) Vasheypooh. At the crossroads of waiting for another temp root through adb our practice my soldering skills.

i've come to the same conclusion unfortunately. this is only my second attempt at rooting an android device and it's wildly different from the process for the previous device i was working with, so since the instructions i was using didn't mention installing a recovery, i failed to do that myself. my kindle is going to the "Your kindle had detected a problem and must clear App storage" on every boot and all attempts to communicate with it have failed. looks like a cable or a new device are my only options at this point. i will definitely be using a recovery of some kind from now on!

I have exact same issue. Can someone help. I can't get rooted using any of the tools available today.
HELP!
This is because you changed the properties on all the files in /system.
Why would you do that?
su no longer has permissions to run.
If you can't get into recovery, you likely need a factory cable to fix.

[Q] Any Suggestions?

I recently rooted my kindle no problems and installed android market and TWRP with no problem using kindle fire utility but one day i accidently pressed 4 on the Kindle fire utility and it did the stock update.zip on my kindle and i lost my root + TWRP recovery but regained root access by using kindle utility again but i cant seem to get TWRP back on there. every time i go to press 5 for install twrp it says TWRP img found and tries to install but i end up waiting forever and i power off and on like it says any suggestions?
I was never able to get TWRP to install with KFU. I eventually gave up using KFU and just installed it manually, which isn't hard to do at all:
http://liliputing.com/2011/12/how-t...ire-backup-restore-flash-custom-firmware.html
a few notes on the link: there is a typo in there, make sure you type adb. another suggestion i'd make is to put the img in the platform-tools folder

[Solved] Kindle Fire Bricked!! - stuck on yellow triangle/screwed up framework folder

So I was messing around with my rooted Kindle Fire trying to apply a new theme to my Ice Cream Sandwich Launcher with metamorph and totally screwed everything up. I rebooted my Kindle Fire and it was stuck on the kindle fire logo screen. This morning I tried to unbrick it with the Kindle Fire Unbrick utility but it screwed up everything even more. Now i'm stuck on the yellow triangle screen (firefirefire), I realized that I totally screwed up the framework apk in the system folder. My computer will recognize the Kindle Fire but it comes up as "kindle" in the Other Devices in the "Device Manager". I tried to update the driver but the wizard will say that it cannot find any driver. What should I do? I already read many other posts but throughout the steps I get stuck on one and cannot continue.
I suggest try the following:
Adb kill-server
Adb start-server
fastboot -i 0x1949 oem idme bootmode 4000
fastboot -i 0x1949 reboot
or
adb shell idme bootmode 4000
adb shell reboot
Good luck
Sent from my Amazon Kindle Fire using Tapatalk
I know how to fix the yellow triangle, do this
1.Download kindle fire utility
2.Unzip kindle fire utility
3.To install the driver, its easy, just plug in your kindle, when it pops up with the install wizard say pick from the location of: KindleFireUtility>drivers>kindle 4.run kindle fire utility, select 1 then select 1 again
That's it, hope it helps

First off, what rom are you running on you Kindle stock 6.2.2, CM7, CM9? Did you make a backup of the original framework-res.apk? If so follow these instructions (assuming you have adb working):
if original framework-res.apk is stored on you computer:
from command prompt (start -> in search box type cmd then enter) cd to where you have backed up the original file if it's on your computer
then type the following commands
adb devices
adb remount
adb push framework-res.apk /system/framework
adb shell chmod 644 /system/framework/framework-res.apk
adb reboot
if the original file is stored on your kindle:
adb devices
adb remount
adb mv /path-to-original/framework-res.apk /system/framework/framework-res.apk (fill in actual path in "path-to-original")
adb shell chmod 644 /system/framework-res.apk
adb reboot
Hint: If you didn't make copy of original framework-res.apk, you can always download and open up the install zip for your rom and extract the original file. Good Luck!
Kindle Fire Bricked PLEASE HELP!!!
So like every other noob with a new kindle fire 6.2.2 i tried to root it, after nearly 3 days of trying different ways i was able to root it i then proceeded to install go launcher ex once i selected go launcher it froze and i have not been able to boot sense.i was stuck on kindle fire logo and it would not do anything i tried to run the unbrick utility 1.1 and 1.0 i get device not found but it does say it was unbricked but it is not, now let me say how stupid i was to not create a backup i know i know ugh im kicking myself now... my computer sees it under device manager as android adb interface when pluged in and i see the usb connection in the task bar on WIN 7, but i cannot access it as a protable drive. when i turn it on it will only load twrp.im guessing im screwed and everything is gone... any help will be much much appreciated, im not sure what other info you may need at this point and i am sorry for my ignorance in advance. thank you for any help!
and yes i have tried several things to get it working again which has gotten me to this worse point...i was able to see it normaly as protable device but i dont know what i did to get this.
somebodyssomewhere:
- boot to twrp
- open shell -> "adb shell"
- issue "echo /dev/block/mmcblk0p12 > /sys/devices/platform/usb_mass_storage/lun0/file"
- now the sdcard should mount to the computer
now you can delete the faulty .apk of go launcher with adb commands or install a new rom:
- now you can download and copy your new rom to sdcard (ie prerooted stock)
- mount sdcard -> "mount /sdcard"
- exit adb shell -> "exit"
- tap install in twrp and install the new rom
- ignore errors about volume "misc" - the kf don't have a volume "misc"
- on the screen where you return after installation tap clear dalvik/cache
in eighter case set the bootmode back to normal:
- set boot mode to normal -> "adb shell idme bootmode 4000"
- reboot -> "adb reboot"
thank you for your replies i will try them all as well as let my friend know who is coming over to try to fix my stupid lol thank you all for your suggestions.
Update - Here is the Fix
With a bit of research and lots of help from b63 I got my Kindle Fire to work again:
1. Booted into TWRP (Recovery Mode).
2. Flashed new MD5 zip (Kindle Fire Stock 6.2.2).
3. Wiped all data off the sd card except the TWRP folder and the MD5.
4. Booted the Kindle Fire and it went straight to the lockscreen.
Thanks for all your help!
Fedor
Still am sorta stuck
Ok, so I tried to flash a MIUI ICS rom using TWRP and followed the (apparently crappy) instructions here. So, I'm stuck on the TWRP logo and have used the Kindle Fire Utility to try and reset the bootmode to no avail (it does set it and it reboots but still never progresses into the actual TWRP menu.
Any ideas?!

would try to follow this:

i did finally get my kindle working again after several reboots of the pc and kindle and re installing the drivers a couple times it is now recognized. after almost a week of messing with this i have found that rooting this is alot more simple then many people are giving directions for.
what i did:
download kindlefireutility1.1
download what apps you want BEFORE you root, i have found many apps work when installed before rooting some apps may still not work..
once kindle fire utility is downloaded extract it to your c: drive
go into the kindle fire utility folder in the c drive and install the usb drivers if you need them,if not click run this will open the utility make sure you have a fresh reboot of both the kindle and pc, plug the usb cable into the kindle and pc leave it on usb mass storage mode, move any apps or files you want and press 5 to install the latest twrp MAKE A BACKUP IN TWRP BACKUP ITS EASY, DO NOT PRESS CONTINUE UNTIL KINDLE IS BACK ON THE HOME SCREEN it will say press any key a few times when using this utility.
once done you will want to install the google frame work and Go Launcher. The kindle will reboot a couple times during all this and can take up to 5 min to load so be patient.
go back into the kindle utility and then press 7 and then press #2
once this is done you can then root so hit # 3 for perm install of burrito and super user
now once those are done and you are back into the kindle home screen click on the super user icon looks like an android dude and click ok. if you dont see ok then it didnt work and try again
then click on the burrito root guy he looks like an android cop open him and if you see exit then ur good if not try again.
now your kindle should be rooted. now if you want to install a custom ROM do the same exact steps but then when it is rooted power off the kindle and press the power button once and immediately again press and hold the power button for 7 seconds until it turns orange you will then see the yellow triangle for about 2 min then it will load twrp
once in twrp go tot he folder where you saved your ROM onto your kindle, i like to copy files to the download folder..
select your rom then click on flash, you may get a couple errors but ignore them. make sure to wipe the cashe and then hit reboot and you should be good...i hope this help someone and if you need help feel free to send me a msg. im no expert but ill try

Turn off your KF.
Turn on and wait for yellow triangle (in older FFF) or logo(in FFF 1.3).
At this moment press and hold power button until light goes red. You will boot into TWRP.
I did and the screen flickered and turned on. I used Kindle Fire Utility with BurritoRoot3. Once it was on my kindle i used BurritoRoot3 to install FIREFIREFIRE and i dont think it flashed TWRP but i didnt know if i could still flash TWRP and if you can how?
You still can use fire utility to flush TWRP. Get the last version from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1399889.
Or use gscript : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1500935 for install touch CWM. It not recuire adb, but with CWM you cannot restore TWRP backups.
Or try :
http://liliputing.com/2011/12/how-t...ire-backup-restore-flash-custom-firmware.html
or
http://rootzwiki.com/topic/12363-how-to-windows-install-twrp-20-on-your-kindle-fire/
check recovery.img in the recovery folder of kfu - has to be ~10mb
if not delete the file and redo the installation
there is a little error in the current run.bat of kfu (0.9.3) - use the run.bat from this post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=23536888&postcount=1007
I actually re rooted my kindle after the 6.3 update and it automatically installed twrp which I use to install cm9 kang.

[2017] Root Kindle Fire HD 6 4th gen tutorial

Hi,
This is my first post here but I have gotten so much help I wanted to give back. I have been working on rooting my Kindle fire HD 6 over the last couple days and after searching multiple tutorials I have successfully rooted with these steps.
To begin:
1. You MUST backup any data on your device before starting this process
2. Download all the files from here and Fire OS 5.4.0.0 here
3. Get your downgrade here
3. Follow the instructions below (modified from user @marathonjon reply here https://forum.xda-developers.com/fire-hd/general/how-to-upgrade-to-lollipop-root-gapps-t3163950/page54)
Here we go for the install:
1. Enable ADB on your device and set up ADB on your computer
2. Download 4.5.3 firmware (you should already have it from the download above)
3. Connect device to computer and run "adb reboot recovery" (assuming you have adb enabled on your tablet)
4. Use volume keys and power button to navigate to "Apply update from ADB"
5. From computer type "adb sideload update-kindle-20.4.5.3_user_453011120.bin" (the files need to be added to the same folder your terminal is currently running or you can specify the file path)
6. From tablet select "wipe data/factory reset" (this is why we did the backup earlier)
7. From tablet select "reboot system"
8. Complete setup (do not connect to a wifi network yet, this is very important!)
9. Disable OTA updates ( adb shell ; pm block com.amazon.dcp or "Debloater"), I used the above jmz Kindle fire tools to disable the OTA, just sideload it and you are good to go.
10. Sideload Kingroot & let it root (this can take a while, just let it go)
11. Flash openrecovery-twrp-2.8.6.0-ariel.img TWRP image via Flashify (backup stock recovery first, again very important!!) (you will need to sideload the included Flashify APK)
12. Download all files above and place them in the Download directory of your kindle
13. Boot into TWRP, flash 4.5.3_twrp_recovery_full_ariel_string.zip. (use adb reboot recovery for this)
14. Do factory reset using the default TWRP wipe settings
15. Flash FireOS 5.4.0.0 (rename *bin to *zip so that TWRP can recognize it)
16. Flash 5.5.2_1534_stock_recovery_uboot.zip, this will put the required 5.3.1 bootloader back(PLEASE MAKE SURE TO DO THIS STEP!!)
17. DO NOT REBOOT YET! If you do you will probably lose root!
18. Flash Supersu.zip (included in the download
19. Clear cache/dalvik in TWRP
20. Reboot to recovery: adb reboot recovery. This will be stock recovery now because TWRP doesn’t boot with 5.x bootloaders.
21. Reboot to FireOS (could take ~15 minutes, it might seem like it is stuck in a boot loop but it will go)
The above instructions served me well, as with all posts on this site PLEASE USE AT YOUR OWN RISK! And post any questions below
I just followed your tutorial and it worked for me... Amazon has FireOS 5.4.0.1 for the update file now and it still worked following your steps. Thank you!
Could I keep root without updating to 5.4?
---------- Post added at 06:42 AM ---------- Previous post was at 06:26 AM ----------
Also Kingroot fails. Was the exploit is uses patched?
Bricked Device(unbricked it with DoLooper tutorial) improvising,Step 9 says sideload JMZ Tools how do you do that without connection? only way i can think is es explorer which you have to have connection to install
Any news on this? Thinking of attempting
I attempted this to downgrade from rooted 5.12 to 4.53 so that I could install twrp and get to the latest load.
I am stuck on step 8. After I flashed 4.5.3 and wiped, I attempted to sideload kingroot and the jmz utility but they did not install. I imagined that it failed because they are from unknown sources and that setting is disabled once 4.5.3 is loaded. So I rebooted with wifi off, attempted to adb reboot recovery, and I got to a recovery menu with 2 options, none of which are adb sideload.
How can I proceed? If I enable wifi to download kingroot, it will attempt to update, correct?
EDIT - I enabled wifi to download kingroot apk since I can't sideload it, and surely enough an update to 4.5.5 downloaded. Damn.
RE-EDIT--I just caught my initial mistake. I used the command adb sideload for kingroot and jmz instead of adb install. Another damn. I am downloading kingroot and rooting while the update to 4.5.5 awaits installation, which I won't do.
It boot me into kids edition...?

Does this work on the Fire OS 5.6.0.1 that was sent out this year?

IDK, it has been awhile since I ran this and I have not stayed up to date on the latest firmware. As always you can try it at your own risk and post any questions here. I will do my best to answer.
I do not recommend trying this if you rely on the tablet for anything, things can go wrong and you could lose everything including the tablet.
Have Fun!
On step 15, does it have to be 5.4.0.0? I'm having trouble finding a download for it since the link in OP leads to 5.6.0.1
edit: found a link (https://forum.xda-developers.com/hd8-hd10/general/fire-hd-8-2017-downgrade-to-5-4-0-0-5-6-t3719639) but it's for FIre HD 8. Will that work or does it need to be specifically for the HD 6?
edit2: nevermind, didn't look hard enough, found it here https://forum.xda-developers.com/fire-hd/general/fire-hd-rom-links-t3173102

Yes, that is the latest version that is still root-able I believe.
Still works with update 5.6.1.0
Still works thanks alot!
Yup, worked for me as well. Thanks @RobbotCC from another CMH kindle newbie
Stuck on step #13
My KF HD 6 gen 4 shows it is running OS 4.5.3. I can boot into TWRP. ADB sees my device. I need to add ".\adb" before ADB commands.
The problem I'm having is that I cannot flash the TWRP 4.5.3 recovery. When I have the TWRP launcher showing and type " .\adb reboot recovery" the system reboots right into the TWRP launcher. When I power off then on, it boots right into the Fire OS. I never see the system recovery screen, so I can't flash the recovery zip file.
Help? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
