A n00b's guide to cm7 for the Bravo
(if any benevolent mod feels this a worthy post, kindly replace my broken links with real ones. I am but a lowely new member. I'm also unsure if it should go here or Q/A, please move if inappropriate)
I got my wife a Bravo yesterday (unlocked, from Amazon) for her to use. These are the steps I took to get it up and running with CM7. This is from unboxing through to success.
On with it!
Sim in, Fire up phone. I gave Blur garbage info to make it go away. The internet assures me there is some way to initially bypass blur, but I could not find it.
Upon getting into the phone, turn on usb debugging (Settings -> Applications -> Developement)
On your computer, install the official Motorola drivers, located here: ht tp://www.motorola.com/Support/US-EN/Support-Homepage/Software_and_Drivers/USB-and-PC-Charging-Drivers
Connect the bravo to your machine, let all the drivers install. On the bravo, change the USB connection to Mass Storage
Download CM7 and the Google Apps packages from this thread: ht tp://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1445839
Put both of these zip files on the Bravo's SD card.
Download SuperOneClick from the first post on this thread: ht tp://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682
Unzip its contents to a folder on your computer and run it. In the upper right hand corner, select Expoit: psnuter
Click Root.
Note; If you have any driverless hardware on your machine, SOC will prompt to force the install of adb drivers. DO NOT DO THIS. For example, I have some Dell poop on my machine I never bothered finding drivers for.
SuperOneClick should spin through its root process and succeed with no further intervention on your part. Your phone should now be rooted.
From here, unplug your Bravo. Reboot it.
When it comes up, fire up the Market and go buy (yes, money, a whopping $1.50) BandroidX's excellent Bravo Bootstrap app. Here is a thread for reference: ht tp://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1047292
When it installs, launch it. Superuser will prompt you to give it root perms, tell it Yes and remember.
Click the "Bootstrap Recovery" button. This "installs the bootloader" (for lack of more specific terminology). Be patient, on mine it succeeded right away, but the Dev warns it may take time.
I did a normal power off / power on at this point. Probably uneeded, but I just really love the Motorola boot animation.
Once back on, go back into BandroidX's app and click the "Reboot Recovery" button. Your phone will immediately reboot into a (possibly familiar) CMW-esq screen. You will navigate up and down with the volume buttons, select with the power button.
Wipe the cache, confirm
Wipe the dalvik cache, confirm
Wipe Data / Factory Restore
Install from Zip: select cm7 zip file off SD card. Let it do its thing.
Install from Zip: select google apps zip, let it finish.
Wipe cache
Wipe dalvik cache
Reboot Device.
The second two cache wipes may be uneeded. I came from Atrix modding where all good results were surrounded by cache wipes
The first time cyanogen boots, mine hung on the CM7 boot animation indefinetly (I let it sit 30 minutes)
I did a battery pull to reboot.
After that, it started beautifully. Hello CM7!
The big red danger: I have done this whole process three times (restoring to sbf via rsd each time, but thats for another tutorial). The first two times, after flashing CM7, I tried to install BandroidX's bootloader. After clicking the magic top button, my device would no longer boot, instead Hang on the first red M screen. Regular phone recovery menu data wipes did not fix. Had to use RSD. This may be documented in a thread I could not find, but be aware of it.
I hope this helps somebody else out there. All credit goes to the devs who did the ACTUAL work that I laid out here.
The Bravo Bootstrap app is not necessary. You can use 2ndInit Recovery for the Defy and it's free. BTW, I do own Bravo Bootstrap and found 2ndInit a day later....kinda made me mad. Link to 2ndInit Thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1032212
Absolutely correct. And as I look at the second sentence of that post you linked, I realize why trying to stamp bravo-recovery on CM mucked up my world :/

As soon as someone points out which "google apps" stuff to download, I will hit the thanks button.
On the page this points to for the google apps, there is 40 files to choose from. I notice that some are labeled by date, but which group matters and what date is best?
To turn off blur\bypass blur setup, type eebluroffee on the first screen. Sometimes it takes a few tries, just keep trying eebluroffee and it'll eventually work.
The gapps for GB (CM7) is the 2011\08\28 version. It's linked in a few of the threads around here. ICS is the 2012\03\17 (latest the last time I checked, although a few of the apps are now outdated, like Play and GMail).
You can use the Hacked Gapps I made with CM7. Its in Bravo Themes and Apps. Its the same as the 2011\08\28 version, except that Market is updated to Play and Maps has the international navigaion hack.
I had to reflash the stock 2.2.1 SBF every time, until I did the wipes both BEFORE and AFTER.
No indefinite load screen... Just a beautiful custom ROM!
Oh, and I used "Defy 2ndinit" and installed the latest (1.0.7 or something).
This is my first Bravo to put a custom ROM on, but my second phone and that helped.
Now off to find/build custom themes!

I'm rooted but have never ran anything but stock on my phone. Only having experience with flashing WinMo devices, what exactly do I need to know before flashing a custom ROM?
If I flash, do I lose the data on my phone now (does it do a factory wipe)?
Most times toy will need to do a wipe of the data and cache to get a full rom working correctly.

Yeah, thanks.. Just downloaded ROM manager and Clockworkmod Recovery ($2), kinda following the instructions from Gummys post.
How long does this process take? I installed from SD and did the reboot.. I must of waited a good fifteen minutes before pulling the battery assuming it was stuck. Now it's sitting on the Gummy Screen with the 4 rotating colored android pics.
Got into recovery but it's not allowing me to apply the update.zip (e:can't open/cache/recovery/command)?

Flashing will wipe your phone. The nice thing with android is -anything you have purchased or installed from the market will automatically be restored to your phone after you log in using your gmail account.
Let me qualify my statement though - I have flashed a few roms and my free apps were not automatically installed for whatever reason. My purchased apps were not installed either - but they were available for installation at no charge.
Here is another important thing to remember - this will only happen if you chose the correct settings in -uh well- settings. There are some options in there to back up your data to google. If you did that then 95% chance it will all be good.
I recently switched from the DX to the D1 (gave my wife the DX bc I wanted to try some D1 roms) and all my apps were installed and somehow google even migrated my current wallpaper over! I was blown away by that.
Also -make sure your contacts are set up to sync with google. if they are just being added to your phone and not in sync with your google account you are going to loose them all.
Flashing roms:
1. You need to get the droidx bootstrapper app from the market (or I think you can get it for free if you search clockwork mod on google and go to Koush's website. I just bought it to help the developer.).
2. Open the app.
3. Press the "Bootstrap recovery button"
4. You should get a dialog box saying success (or something and then press ok).
5. Press "reboot recovery".
6. Your phone will reboot into clockwork recovery (not the stock phone recovery). It will be a black screen with old school green letters and a menu.
a. In recovery you do not have a touch screen.
b. The volume rocker is up/down.
c. The camera button is "Enter".
d. The physical back button will take you back one menu (also I believe the power button but I always used the power button.
7. The first thing you want to do before you do anything is make a nandroid (backup) of your phone.
8. The opening screen of recovery has the option to create a nandroid. do that.
9. It takes around 5 minutes then choose to reboot your phone when it says, ""complete".
10. To flash a rom put ti...

Read a few other loop posts, but none were for the evo and/or helped much. I've been running CyanogenMod (newest) with little problems except for one which is why I wanted to try a few others.
Using ROM manager, I did try to d/l myn's as I have used it in the past, and after the download, reboot, the install kept showing the android package and a triangle with exclamation point. When completed, it rebooted and just kept looping through the CyanogenMod bootloader screen (so I know the myn's didn't get installed). I have 3 backups, the one from this morning and 2 older ones.
I did a reboot / recovery with this mornings backup and had the same results (note I didn't wipe, just backed up). I did let it sit a good 15 minutes of the loader, black screen, loader, etc.
I then restarted again and selected the older backup (which was using fresh rom). Got my loader, and everything did start (thankfully) and I could make a few calls. The problem(s) I have are;
I don't want fresh which is why I switched. I just tried using ROM manager to select myn's, even selected the WIPE DATA and backup with the results. The installer goes 2 quick to read, but I just see that triangle with ! as it tries to flash the new myn's rom.
Ideas / suggestions are appreciated.
I've heard that ROM manager might not clear the Dalvik cache very well. This is what I'd try:
1) Download and install AMON RA 2.2.1 that I've attached. Its labeled as PC36IMG so your phone will automatically recognize it.
2) Download a check sum program for your computer, you should verify the MD5 value to this one below. You need to make sure you didn't have any download issues and this file isn't corrupt, otherwise you've got a new set of problems.

3) Place this file on your SD card root directory. Also put Warm2.2 ROM on the SD card as well.
4) With your phone off, hold down the volume down button and turn it on.
5) You should go into the bootloader screen. The phone will automatically scan for the PC36IMG file. Agree to install it.
6) After this is installed, remove this PC36IMG file off your SD card just to make things less confusing.
6) With the phone off, go into the bootloader screen again. This time select "Recovery" after it scans.
7) You should now be in AMON_RA 2.2.1 recovery. Navigate to Wipe. For a completely clean install, wipe data, cache, Dalvik, and SD:EXT.
8) Then navigate to the Flash from SD card, find your Warm2.2 ROM and install. When complete, reboot the phone. Things should work now.

Sweet! Glad to hear things are resolved.
In the future, always wipe the cache and dalvik before flashing. That goes for kernels, mods, as well as ROMs (wipe the data also when doing these). Some even suggest wiping these 3 times just to make sure.
Top 3 sources of problems: corrupted download, didn't wipe, and incompatible mods. IMHO.
Yea, well normally I would use ROM manager (free) and didn't delete the data which this time I did from the recovery mode which was probably a good part.
So at least now it's the newest radio, ROM and everything I want (except the vanilla lock screen) which when I tried to install from SD I received a nice error talking about the app was written with some old things, so that's my next project!

You must be on either CyanogenMod 7 or 340 Froyo. You must flash 1.7.22, not 1.7.22.1, it can be flashed later.
Also, it's not that difficult to fix a bootloop lol.

Well since I can't post in the real thread I will post here all the bugs I find.
1. Lot's off apps in the market don't work. I am talking a good 40-60 at least. There are a few important ones I use like Noom and Cardio Trainer.
Market shows that the app is incompatible with my device. Ti Backup tries to restore but either says it is successful or fails, it works neither time.
2. When I check Settings>System>About Phone and then click Systems Updates it force closes settings.
Reason I was checking this was because I tried to update using ROM manager but that didnt work.
3. ROM manager works, however it does nothing when I click "Check for ROM Updates"
4. Google Maps was said to be installed, maybe on the next version but since I cant install that I had to install it myself
5. Tethering and hotspots. No hotspot option shown. Also USB tethering did not seem to work. I tried the 4 different settings you can have the phone in when connected to USB but the status says USB not connected (obviously not true since I am able to connect and view my SD card through my computer)
6. ROM fails to load after a reboot. Happened to me twice and I had to SBF it back to stock for it to boot up. This happened when I just did a normal reboot
So for now I am done as I am looking at the Motorola logo even after a wipe of data and cache

I experienced a bootloop when I was flashing back to froyo 340 (droid logo, droid eye, droid logo, droid eye, and so on).
Here's what worked for me:
1. Power down the phone (battery pull)
2. Put battery back in
3. Hold home key, then hold the power key until the phone turns back on (you should see the M logo)
4. Press the search key when you see the Android next to the triangle
5. Using the volume up/down keys on the side of your phone and the camera button to select, wipe the data and cache (please note: you only need to push the camera button half way to select)
6. Reboot the phone and it should work, at least it did for me.

Yeah I tried that and it works sometimes but not usually.
How did you flash miui? Did you flash it over CM7 or froyo 340?

how are you installing the apps? manually from the market? or titanium backup?
Are you referring to post 4? If so I tried both ways. Market won't let me install the ones that I cant get installed. They just don't show up in the search. If I go onto the market website they are there but once I choose my phone it disappears.
Titanium fails when i try to install the apps
It's as if the phone is not broadcasting what model it actually is. So the apps that do work are just "works on any old Android" while the others ones say these devices only

Oh, I see where I mentioned installing apps in the last post. I did the same thing as i mentioned above. A combination of Ti and market installs

That's the one I flashed yesterday. Follow the install instructions posted in the lithium miui thread.
No app drawer on miui, so using launcher pro. With launcher pro, the widgets are working, which weren't for some reason on the stock launcher.
Make sure you let your phone rest the full 8 and 4 mins, I don't know why but I did, and apparently it's important.
GPS also works, but I had to play with it to get it going.

Lets get this out of the way first. I am not responsible if you screw up your phone, but you are probably here because you already screwed up your phone. I have now been through this several times over the last few days. Some will say this process is overkill, but there is no denying that it always works, so please refrain from stating the obvious.
If you have installed or updated CM7/MIUI and lost your baseband, IMEI, or both, this should help you. Due to the amount of people currently having this problem, I would recommend this be stickied at least temporarily until things are straightened out, so people can find it easily.
For Windows only, I do not have a Mac.
Step 1 - Read the entire post and understand everything involved before you attempt this. This is a long ride, probably 30-40 minutes from start to end. This is not for new people, and will assume you have a certain amount of knowledge because you attempted to flash CM7/MIUI.
DO NOT SKIP OR SHORTCUT ANY STEP IN THIS PROCESS, UNLESS I SPECIFICALLY STATED YOU MET THE CRITERIA TO DO SO. DO NOT EVEN THINK ABOUT TRYING THIS UNLESS YOU CAN REACH DOWNLOAD MODE AND RECOVERY USING BUTTONS WITH THE PHONE OFF!
Step 2 - Gather what you need...
1 - The AIO Vibrant Toolbox : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=954509
Install according to directions in the post. Donate to this guy. He spent alot of time making this easy for you to do.
2 - The old CM7 install files : http://www.mediafire.com/?gn4qoonoe3cjyp6
Unzip to a location that is easy to get to.
3 - The new version of CM7/MIUI you want to install, from the thread of your choice. Donate to the developer you are using, they spend alot of their free time making your phone better. They don't get paid for it, and they dont charge you for it.
4 - Your phone, with a full battery.
Step 3 - Odin to JFD and install Clockwork 2.x
1 - Fire up the AIO Toolbox. Do not connect your phone yet, but power it down and pull your battery. See that sticker under it that says IMEI? Write it down! You will be referencing it a few times throughout the process. Start Odin and select your pit and pda files, they should automatically come up if you are using the toolbox. Hold down your volume up and down buttons, and insert your USB cable, then insert your battery. You should go to download mode, and see Odin connect. Hit start and let it fly. Once it reboots, unplug your phone. Go to settings/about phone and you should have a JFD baseband. Hit status, and check your IMEI. See how it matches the one you wrote down? Yay! Move on to the next item. If it does not, you have some reading to do because you really screwed something up, and it is beyond my power to help you...
2 - Mount phone and put the following files on the root of the sd card:
vibrant-efsbackup.zip (if you already have a backup/efs folder on your sd card you do not need this)
cm7-vibrant-initial-20110224.zip
The zip file of the new CM7/MIUI rom you want to flash.
3 - Download ROM Manager and install clockwork recovery 2.x (if you already have the update.zip on your sd card, which you should, you can also skip this) and power down your phone.
4 - Boot into recovery using the 3 button method (holding volume up and down and power, releasing power when the word VIbrant appears on your screen), hit reinstall packages, you may have to hit it twice to get to clockwork recovery. Choose to install zip from sd card, and select vibrant-efsbackup.zip. Let it do its thing. Then select reboot, and when it does, check your sd card for a backup/efs folder. Got it? Good. Power down the phone. (Obviously, if you already have the efs backup completed, you could have skipped this step.)
Step 4 - Install Clockwork 3.x and Old CM7
1 - Fire up the AIO Toolbox. Do not connect your phone yet, but pull your battery. Start Odin and hit the pda button, select the file cm7-vibrant-initial-kernel.tar from the CM7 package you unzipped (Remember, in a place that is easy to find). THIS IS IMPORTANT - UNCHECK AUTO REBOOT!!! Hold down your volume up and down buttons, and insert your USB cable, then insert your battery. You should enter download mode, and see Odin connect. Hit start and let it fly. Once it is finished, pull the usb cable. With the download mode screen still on your phone, boot into recovery using the 3 button method. You should now be in clockwork recovery 3.x. Move on to the next item! If you did not get in, you can try to pull your battery, replace it and boot into recovery from there. If you still can't get there, you get to go where the people who do not properly follow instructions go... back to Step 1.
2 - In clockwork 3.x, choose factory reset, and let it do it's thing. Then go to mounts and storage, and format system, data, and cache. Choose install zip from sd card and choose cm7-vibrant-initial -20110224.zip. As it is installing, one of the last things you see should be "restoring efs". Hit reboot when finished, and boot into CM7. When it boots, make sure you toggle the lockscreen a couple times so it connects to service. Check baseband and IMEI again. Baseband should have changed, but it does not matter until we get to where we are going. IMEI still the same right? Awesome! Power down the phone, move to the next step! It's not? You my friend, get to meet all your other friends back at Step 1.
Step 5 - Installing what you really want...
1 - Boot into recovery using the 3 button combo. Do a factory reset, wipe cache partition, go to advanced and wipe Dalvik cache. Choose install zip from sd card, and pick that shiny new version of CM7/MIUI you picked out. You are almost there. Flash it! Reboot, and when it comes back up, take note of what time it is and DO NOT TOUCH THE PHONE FOR 15 MINUTES. You have no idea the amount of bugs this squashes. After that, check the baseband and IMEI, even though you already know it is right anyway. If it is not, do i have to say it again? You know where you are going...
2 - Destroy the paper you wrote your IMEI on, you would not want that info in the wrong hands...
3 - Enjoy your new rom
FAQ:
Q: I did everything you said, and it did not work!
A: You either skipped a step, or did not stop at the point I told you you were screwed.
Q: No, seriously, I did everything you said!
A: Seriously, I have done this 5 times in the past 3 days, and it worked every time.
Q: I installed CM7 nightly #9,10,or 11 with this method, and I have no sound on calls. What gives?
A: These builds have known issues with in call audio. Flash CM7.1
Q: Once I am on CM7/MIUI, do I have to do this every time or can I update normally?
A: Once you are on CM7 or MIUI with the proper IMEI and a good baseband, you should be able to update via the rom posting instructions. If you decided to switch from CM7 to MIUI or vice versa, I would go back to this process to get your initial installation.
Q: I installed CM7.1 and then tried to go to MIUI, and lost everything again, what happened?
A: There are changes betweeen CM7 to 7.1 that have made this difficult due to compatability issues, which is why I recommend doing this process again if you want to switch between the two.
Q: I thought there was an easier way to do this, why so many steps?

Just install the one you linked to, the one direct from miui.us.
The other Lithium one looks like it's customized, overclock kernal, stuff like that.
I disabled vodoo lag fix. I odin back to 2.1. Then I installed stock 2.2.
Then I followed the instructions exactly. Wipe dalvic cashe, format system/data/cache, wipe factory restore, etc etc.
Not sure if I had to install 2.2 first, but I did anyway since the install instructions were for upgrading from a 2.2 rom and not a 2.1 rom.

You don't have to install via those long instructions anymore. Apparently those are outdated.
Just manually backup your /efs and keep a copy on your computer, just because everyone should have a copy of their /efs folder and nv_data.bin, otherwise if you run into trouble you can lose your IMEI.
Then follow these simple instructions as outlined by user nickmcminn60 for his Lithium MiUi rom, but it worked for the regular MiUi also:
INSTALL INSTRUCTIONS (For Lithium and SS-11 If you are on MIUI, CM-7 or a 2.2)
-Wipe Dalvik Cache
-Wipe Cache Partition
-Wipe Data/Factory Reset
-Format-System, Cache and Data (Located under "Mounts & Storage)
-Flash LE Lithium (EDIT by me samsungvibrant..OR THE STOCK VERSION OF MIUI could be flashed here)
-Fix Permissions
-Reboot and Let Settle For 8 Min
-Reboot again Let Set For 4 Min..
No need to do the longer install process you had mentioned in the prior post.

It's a very smooth rom, it has fast animations and i love em'
The only thing bugging me right now is battery life drains way faster than what i'm used to. I'll find out more on calibrating the battery/changing kernels etc.

With root explorer, free from market. Enable root within that app in settings. Also enable root with superuser app in tools folder. Then navigate to efs folder copy and paste it.

From what I have seen Lithium is actually meant to be more of a development ROM for new features. The other ROM made by that developer is the SS series which is meant to be more of a daily driver (eg. more stable), and it has additional tweaks from the official MIUI release to try to achieve things like better battery life as well as a OC or UVable kernel.

Unrelated to the OP, but if you're using Launcher Pro you're missing out on one of the best aspects of MIUI: No App Drawer! Instead you organize your apps into folders on the Home page. It makes you wonder why there ever was an app drawer. Seems like a silly concept now that I've been using MIUI for a while.

I rooted my TPT that had ICS 3.5, and accidently deleted a file and messed it up. How can I reload an original or no bloat OS. I tried to install one that I downloaded from this site (0089) and couldn't get it to install with CWM recovery. Is there a step by step process laid out somewhere? Thanks!

I didn't try in end because mine is a "US" and I wasn't sure if "WE" would be appropriate. I do have another TPT that's ICS 3.5 (00132 US) and was wondering if you or anyone else can give me a step by step tutorial on how to copy the OS on my good unit and load it onto the messed up one.

No big deal, you need CWM on both of them. Then start CWM on your working one with a 2GB or bigger SD inside, go to Backup/Recovery and select backup to external SD. Wait till its done. Then reboot and take the sd from it and put it inside the malfunctioning one. There start CWM, too and go to Backup/Recovery again. Then go to recover from external SD and you are done.
Thanks, but I was so frustrated I took it to a computer repair shop!
It is also worth mentioning that there is a Factory Reset option that may restore the unnamed deleted file. It is found in Settings or in the CWM/Restore menu.
To avoid bloatware install:
1. Factory reset
2. Complete the first 5 or so Setup steps until you see "You're Done"
3. Open Sim card door and prepare to poke the reset button
4. Click "Finish" or "Done" and then as soon as the Lenovo Pre-Install takes over the screen - reset!
5. Start up tablet, done!
(if the pre-install starts up again, reset once more. I've never had to do it more than twice. You can use the power button but it is slower and requires confirmation.)
Incidentally, I have ROM manager Pro in my good unit, and I did a "backup current ROM", and after it finished, I couldn't find it anywhere! When I would click "Manage and Restore Backups" in ROM manager, I just get a blank screen! Plus, when I tried "Reboot into Recovery", or "Install ROM from SD Card", it just reboots to normal on condition, but no prompts in the process. I tried re-installing ROM manager, to no avail! ...and yes, it does show that it is "allowed" in Superuser.
I don't believe that backups can be made via an App on the Thinkpad Tablet. AFAIK, it is only CWM Recovery that works.

Switch the device off. Switch onagainand periodically push volume up, this boots cwm, there try my small manual.
