For those who use Dropbox this might be of interest; there's a new Android beta at http://forums.dropbox.com/topic.php?id=53013&replies=742
Quote:
"Hi everyone!
Even though the holidays have passed, we're really stoked to give you guys one more present -- a new experimental release! Under the wrapping you'll find a bunch of new toys, including a brand new Camera Upload feature. Here are the release notes:
• Automatically uploads photos and videos in the background using Wi-Fi or data plan
• 500MB of free space on first photo uploaded automatically
• Upload files of any size (no more 180 MB limit!)
• Support for resuming file uploads when there are network issues
• Various performance improvements & bug fixes
During this beta period, we are also offering additional free space to test automatic uploading of photos and videos. For every 500MB of photos and videos automatically uploaded, you'll receive another 500MB space bonus, up to 5GB total (including the initial 500MB space).
[Update: this space is not separate from 5GB given for uploading on our desktop clients. Uploading from either desktop clients or Android app will count towards the same 5GB free space.]"
Now, if you have not taken 4.5GB worth of pictures and videos the easiest way of getting that full bonus is... well, you just slap all sorts of smallish music videos, all those dirty hentai pictures you undoubtedly have on your PCs and so on on the sdcard/DCIM or sdcard/DCIM/Camera on your device and let Dropbox sync those. Easy 5GB.
Just don't bother with files over 500MB as they seem to only count towards 500MB uploaded once, ie. if you upload a 1.5GB file it'll still only count as 500MB uploaded.
----
As for those who do not use Dropbox: just ignore this thread instead of starting some petty and childish argument how it sucks or how your favorite service is sooo much better.
Do we get to keep the 5 gigs after the beta is over?
Sent from my GT-I9220 using XDA App
Yes, you do.
There is another thread on this from a couple of weeks ago.
Sign up with this referral (or any other) and get an extra 250 MB free (so do I, BTW):

I thought this beta is closed and over now... are you sure its still working.. I used it two weeks ago and got myself 1GB extra.. that topic is closed so no more discussions and I assume the testing is over with it

No, the beta I'm talking about is a new one, not the same as the person above you is talking about.

You have to make sure the photos etc are imported using the DropBox automatic photo import facility. This is either when you plug in a camera, phone, or just a flash card (with the right folder structure to appear as a camera). You can also do it from the phone itself I understand.
That is what they are testing, and that is what they give extra GB for.
I believe it is closed, but give it a try anyway.
the original was closed, however there is another new beta and they're repeating what they did before, i forgot to do it last time and i'm just finishing up 5gb now. Took a few seconds of looking on their forum to find it.
Many thanks.

I'm trying this new thread:
http://forums.dropbox.com/topic.php?id=53817&replies=186
Seeing if that will give me more space.
The last one I uploaded 1.5GB from my phone and no extra space.
Looks like this one if for the android app instead of the desktop app. No additional 5GB if you had it once, but new takers can get it.

I got the beta invite a few days ago, and its totally replaced iTunes for me. Fast, clean interface that lets me edit id3 tags and has a bunch of other useful features. Couldn't get any better, and I would hate to lose it.

No they have stated eventually they will charge...but who knows how long that will be
My guess is that they will probably have a free version for a limited amount of songs like 5-10K, then charge for anything above that.
that would be nice to give a limited free version. I'm in the UK so can't get at the Beta
I would hope that they just include it in the Google cloud storage pricing, i wouldn't mind a bit to pay for 200 gigs. I already pay for 100 every year for photo storage in picasa, and that same 100 applies to docs, picasa, and email.
But, if they want to charge above that for it, I will probably just be more selective about what I upload. I think I have a few duplicates up there anyways....

I don't know but if/ when they do idk...What I mean is idk if it will be 100% safe to upload my downloaded songs. I mean will google delete music downloaded for free?
how could they tell? downloaded music shows up the same as music you rip from a cd.
Google recently commented that 48 hours worth of video is uploaded to YouTube every minute.
I'm supposing that 20k songs will stay free on Google Music beta with songs in excess of that counting against your paid for shared cloud storage (picasa, etc.)
At least, that's what I'm hoping.
just saw this on fb:
We’re happy to share the good news with you here, first. We recently partnered with Dropbox! So, now Dropbox will come pre-installed on all Android phones, giving you 5GB of storage!
that's pretty sick. my personal acct only has 3 gigs, and that was after a bunch of invites too. exciting!
Cool beans. Can never have too much storage space.
I haven't really looked into cloud storage but how safe is it?
well, apparnetly dropbox was breached a month or two back, or something stupid like that.......i don't really care though because i don't put anything important or vital in it lol but apparently they fixed the issue and whatnot
or you can ask the OP nicely here and they can make you a free 50gb storage account.

600 MB additional free storage
Hi all
Just found a smart way to increase your Dropbox account with 600 MB:
1 Sign into your existing Dropbox account (or create a new account)
2 Goto https://www.dropbox.com/free
3 Follow instructions ... and voila 600 MB additional free storage
Hello everyone, I was given 48GB of free space from dropbox because I installed it on the tab. If this was common knowledge sorry for extra post if not then enjoy the massive space increase When you install it they will send you an email telling you . Just click on the link and follow the directions. Enjoy!

Just got my 48gb's took less than five mins, more than enough space although it only lasts for 12 months
Looks like you only get it once...
I bought the Galaxy Tab 2 7" for my Mom as a Mother's Day gift. (I kinda owed her something extra nice, since I missed visiting for Christmas). Mom lives about 1,000 miles away and doesn't even have a smartphone much less know what to do with a tablet, so I got it all set up for her and then shipped it off. In the process I used DropBox to transfer over some eBooks. MY DropBox account.
After signing myself out and Mom in, the bonus 50GB (I think it's supposed to be 50) never appeared for Mom. I'm guessing it's once time per MEID (or whatever) rather than once per account.
So, be careful if you're planning on gifting it to someone else, or if you use multiple DropBox accounts. Looks like it'll only give the bonus out ONE time.
I bought the 7 inch tab yesterday and when I logged in it updated me that I had gained 48GB of space free for a year. Checked on the computer and it showed and I checked my phone and it also showed. Pretty cool.

You get 2 GB free when you signup for Dropbox. Do you have 50 GB total? If so, it's probably the 2 DB for signing up and 48 from the Tab 2.
tk
I've had my Tab 2 7" for a month now (a prerelease beta model) and I signed up for Dropbox back then and got no bonus. I've tried redoing it, but since my tablet has already been signed up I didn't get anything. Is there a way to get the 48 GB in my situation?
You get 48gb free. I currently have 65 ish from the free storage i already built up

Awesome thx!
I wish I could find a way to transfer that 48gb to my own account, instead of a group account I am on
Try contacting Dropbox and tell them your situation. They'll make an effort to investigate, and if it checks out, you get it!
I wrote this guide for those of you, like myself, that are new to using Dropbox. Since T-Mobile and Sprint are offering 50GB free for two years I decided to try it out. So far I've been very impressed with it. Hopefully this guide will help you maximize your Dropbox experience.
Setting up your Dropbox account:
During the initial phone setup there is a screen showing the 50 GB free offer. I signed up at this time. (If anyone can confirm if you can get back to this screen later please let me know and I'll add it back to the guide. I assume you can get back to it by going back into Dropbox on your phone if you haven't sign up yet but I wont be able to test this unless I reset my phone which I wont be able to do until next week because I have family in town for my son's first Bday and don't have time to re-setup everything yet. )
If you already have a Dropbox account log in from the phones offer screen using your current account. If you don't have an account yet you can make an account on your phone, but I would advise making one ahead of time on a computer to take advantage of an extra 500MB from a referral. If you have a friend that uses Dropbox ask them for their referral link. They will gladly give you this because they (and you) will get an extra 500MB for the referral. You just click the link they provide and provide a name, email address, and a password. Then after the account is setup, use that login information on your phone. If you don't have any friends that use Dropbox yet, feel free to use my referral link for the extra 500MB (http://db.tt/Msdz5Yxe)
When you login to your account you will not see the 50GB yet. Don't be alarmed. You will receive an email explaining that you need to do the "Get Started" guide once you do five of the seven steps in "Get Started" you will be awarded your 50GB. These steps are easy things like complete the Dropbox walkthrough, install Dropbox on another computer, upload files to Dropbox, etc. They walk you through all of the steps.
How to get more storage for free:
If you want more free storage there are a few things you can do:
Upload files from your phone camera or other USB device - You get up to 3GB of free space by uploading pictures to drop box. 500MB increments until you've uploaded 3GB. Sounds like you can get 3GB from Phone upload and another 3GB from uploads from computer client but I've only been able to get 3GB total. If anyone else can confirm this please let me know.
Refer friends - you get 500 MB (and so do your referrals) for each person you refer, up to 16GB
"Get Free Space!" - You'll notice a get free space link at the top right of the Web interface there are all sorts of little things you can do to get more space like write a comment to Dropbox and connecting your Twitter or Facebook account with Dropbox.
Scavenger hunts - Periodically DropBox will do scavenger hunts were you can get free storage for participating. The most recent scavenger hunt is closed, but here is a link showing some info about what it is http://blog.dropbox.com/?p=1194
It's not free, but you can also pay for more storage if you need more.
Security:
If you are security conscious you can encrypt your data before you put it on Dropbox. Truecrypt works well for PCs. I'm researching options for android and will add that info here.
I have not tried this yet but I'm going to try to use Cryptonite to see how well it works
http://code.google.com/p/cryptonite/
Other Tips:
I plan on putting my KeePass database in Dropbox so that I have my passwords everywhere. There is an Android implementation of Keepass on Google play
If you have any other tips for Dropbox please let me know and I'll add them here.
NOTE: Keep in mind this 50 free GB is a 2 year promo by Dropbox and Samsung and at the end of the 2 years you will need to purchase storage from Dropbox or move your data elsewhere. Still pretty cool for 2 years though. You will get to keep 2GB of the 50 for free plus any of the free space you earned using the techniques above.
It has been said in the dropbox forums that if you have free space in your dropbox account already, such as 5gb, that the 50gb is added to that free space. So if you had 5gb of free space now that you would end up with 55gb. Can this be confirmed?

Its UP TO 3GB, you have to transfer 3GB of pics from phone to drop box, it will increment in 500MB chunks
Also works the same for setting up the drop box pc app to sync via usb to your drop box when you plug in your device, also another 3gb possible, again in 500mb chunks
Not sure if they are still doing this, but they were also giving 3GB for syncing your videos / pics from PC to drop box, but that was a beta offer and i think you had to be doing the sync beta a couple months ago
Also there was "Drop Box Adventure 2" basically an internet scavenger hunt a couple weeks back, might try googling it and see if they still have that up, i think that was a gig or 2
I can also confirm that if you have an existing account with drop box that the 50GB will add to your existing pool, I for example have 59.9gb of storage
Also keep in mind that these 50GB will only be available to us for 2 years, after which time you will need to pay, i believe its 99/yr for 50gb
Still waiting on my 23GB from my One S and I completed the Getting Started a long time ago, hopefully I get my extra 48GB with my SGS3

This might be old news to the forum and if so I'm sorry but LG is running a promotion thru September 2014. If you install the box app through their lgworld app store you get 50gbs free!
It's pretty sweet so I thought to share with the XDA community that let's me run CM11 on this beast of a phone.

Unless I'm missing it, Sprint phones don't have the LG World app. We have an lg update app, but not the lg world.
some limitations ? files ?
I didn't know about LG World and thanks for the info.
I tried it on may G2 running CM 11 and I got it as well. :victory:
I think that is standard for Box when you open a new account with them. Maybe Im wrong though.
Is that 50GB storage for life or just one year or any limited?

I'll let you in on a secret. Box checks your device by reading the build.prop file. So the ROM doesn't matter, as long as it identifies itself as an G2.
I've known people to grab a demo phone at a store, install box, log in, get the upgrade, then delete box from the phone...
Also known people to make changes to build.prop on a different phone (go look at the forums for some other phones), then install box to get the upgrade. Then revert the build.prop file back.

haha i was thinking that on the way home earlier In theory anyone who is rooted can get this promotion with any device, all you would have to do is temporarily change the device model in the build.prop and download box

Some space is more useful than others.
For free Box accounts, the max file size is a miniscule 250mb.
For Dropbox, there is no file size limit at all (except if you upload through their website, in which case it's 10gb).
Google Drive has a 10gb limit.

250MB limit is a complete joke. I understand that the space is free. It's probably free because no one can use it in the real world.
For what it's worth. Mail.Ru (a giant Russian company) is offering 1TB of cloud storage as a promotion until 1/20/14. You need to get in on the promotion by that date, the 1TB doesn't expire by that date. Here's what you do:
Sign up for an account:
http://e.mail.ru/signup?from=login&lang=en_US
Go through this link and click on the "Get" button (the black button in the center of the bottom of the page). This page will be in Russian, but you can use whatever translation service you like if necessary (ie. the one built into Chrome):
http://cloud.mail.ru/promo/
Install their Android client from Google play and log in:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ru.mail.cloud
That's it. Once you do that, the initial 100GB of free cloud storage becomes 1TB.
The Android client is not bad. It gives you automatic camera upload options, much like Dropbox. I'm not sure of the file size limits though.
I think I have about 3 or 4 50GB online storage from various providers and many fewer-GB storage from others, but honestly I'm using less than 1% of each, in fact, some has Zero byte in it. For some reason, I am not a big fan of cloudy. I don't want to load my personal stuff up there, that including pictures, family pictures left alone any sensitive documents. I currently use 2GB dropbox acct. and using total of 20MB with my biggest file is 549KB JPEG and many other 200KB .txt.
I guess I'm an old fashion dude.
