Since I did it 3 hours ago, the steps from stock are
(0: Deal with stock crapness)
1: Enable adb (Settings/Applications/Development/Android debugging
2: Root with SuperOneClick 1.95 (I have best results with it)
3: Enable Non Market Apps with SuperOneClick
4: Reboot Phone
5: Install Defy 2nd-Init and use Latest
6: Reboot into 2nd-Init (press Volume Down when green led flashes)
7: Select Stable Recovery (Recovery\Stable Recovery)
8: Make Nandroid Backup (Backup And Restore\Backup\Backup All)
9: Wipe Data\Factory Reset
10: Wipe Dalvik Cache
11: Install Rom
The only time you don't need to Wipe Data\Factory Rest\Dalvik is when upgrading one rom to the next released version, and even then it's better to just install the rom from a blank slate then restore what's needed from backup.
Good Luck.

Bootloop with any custom ROM

I will try to cover any info you might need. I am using windows 7, my phone had 1.5 originally 1.47 hboot. I got the 2.1 official ota.
On monday, I rooted using the pb00img.zip, loaded amon-ra 1.6.2, did factory/data wipe, dalvik wipe, flashed kaos v20, boot looped, tried v.19 with full and dalvik wipe, same.
I have tried all version of kaos from 19-23, evileris 3, celb, cyanogenmod 6. All have the same boot loop, I have done the following:
Reloaded the pb file
Reloaded amon-ra
Have tried manually wiping data and dalvik using adb shell
I have formatted my sd card through windows
I have partitioned my card through amon-ra
Here is a pastebin of my bootup.
http://pastebin.com/SMhKDYZq
The phone starts up with the 3 skateboarding droids, sits there for a bit, screen goes black, i get a little vibrate, then the 3 skaters come back, rinse and repeat.
I have dont have apps2sd, or setcpu. Any help would be greatly appreciated,

Did you ever create a nand backup? If so, go back to it first and verify you don't have a hardware issue.
If you don't have a backup, search this forum for the Eris RUU and I'd go back to that and root using the newest method...basically start over from a working phone.
I do have a nand backup, I have been restoring when i leave work because my phone has to be working. It works fine with the OTA 2.1 that i had just rooted...
have you tried doing full data wipe/dalvik wipe after flashing a rom when i first installed roms i didn't wipe anything for 2 or 3 roms but they all seemed to flash over eachother. but then i couldn't flash anything and i thought somehow i broke something. but then i just did a full wipe after a flash and started up like it should have. took a while the first boot but ever since then i haven't run into any issues

I had this same issue last night, though I kept repeating the Nexus-style boot screen (the "X" thing) over and over. I did a full data/dalvik wipe and everything came up just fine. I had this experience with two different CyanogenMod ports.

[Q] Droid X .604 Boot-loop problems? HELP!

Okay so I am not a noob to the rooting community, but something strange has been happening. I was recently on stock .621 and wanted my wi-fi tether back for my iPad, so I did some research and did the .621/.604 Linux SBF and Root. All is good when i am on that except my 3G almost never works so I installed the "BoostedICS Beta 1" and "Gummy 1.0.1" Roms (Not at the same time). The installation went smooth for both roms and they worked awesome..., BUT when i try to reboot the phone or try to go into CWM It just freezes on the boot logo or it goes into a boot loop and the phone wont start back up, so i have to keep doing SBF. I just sbf and am in CWM and wanting to install gummy again but i want to know if their is something i can do before installing it again that will stop this problem?? Please help!?
How I am installing roms:
1. Boot into CWM
2. Wipe Data/Cache/ and Delvik
3. Install Rom
4. Install GAPPS
5. Reboot
BUMP!
Try wiping system also.

[Q] Help - Defy is stuck in bootloop

Hello
I've tried to upgrade my Defy (525, green lens) to CM10(jelly bean), but im stuck in a boot loop!
My phone had originally Android 2.1 installed, one year ago i successfully rooted it and Android 2.2 successfully.
What i've tried:
- load into 2nd init, wipe cache/wipe data
- install kernel-froyo-222-179-4-signed
- install CM10-20120924-NIGHTLY-mb525
- wipe dalvik cache(this does not promp for confirm, and prints nothing to the console, is this normal?), wipe data
- reboot. Now its stuck in an endless boot loop.
I can enter bootmenu/bootloader/2nd init/stable recovery. I can share here the SD card, so i can copy stuff to my phone
But as i turn on the phone, the red moto logo appears, the top LED is blue, then green, then reboot.
Did i miss something? (I've read somewhere about flashing SBF, do i need to do it?)
EDIT: I've tried to install cm-7-20120930-NIGHTLY-jordan.zip, but this gets stuck at the moto logo forever...Can i someohw see the bootlogs to fund out the problem?
Thanks
EDIT2: Solved it!
1. installed back Nordic froyo with RSD lite, rooted again
2. instaaled CM7 with this tut: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1054447
3. installed CM10 with the instructions from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1795647
dunno what went wrong for the 1st time, maybe upgrading from 2.2->4.1 does not work...
What went wrong
You have answered yourself. In the link to install Cm10, you will see the instruction requires you to flash froyo kernel.
For MB525 builds:
1) Go to Stable Recovery.
2) Wipe data/factory reset, wipe Cache and go to Advanced ► Wipe dalvik.
3) Go to install zip from sdcard ► Choose zip from sd card.
4) Flash froyo kernel
5) Flash CM10-2012xxxx-NIGHTLY-mb525.zip.
6) Flash Gapps.
7) Wipe Cache and Dalvik again (recommended).
8) Restart.

Bricked Defy? Not yet, but almost

This is another of those bricked defy thread.
Everything was fine. I was on 4.3 (a couple of nightlies earlier version) and just downloaded the latest one from Quarx.
I went to TWRP and wiped cache, dalvik, system and data.
Now, what was strange is that I got a prompt that you do not have root, do you want to have root or something. I swiped for that.
The next thing I remember is that the phone rebooted and stuck on the red M (with honey bee) and showing version 7.1-11 (which has always been the boot up screen for me for last two years).
So, I removed the battery, pressed volume down and then Power button. I was in the green android bot screen. Pressed volume up and down and got into some recovery screen.
There are options to wipe cache, wipe data/ factory reset, install update.zip and reboot. I have tried all of these. Unfortunately none of those help me in getting back to normal.
I have an SD card, where I can copy the latest 4.3 ROM from my computer and rename it to update.zip. Will that help?

You softbricked your phone by allowing it to reboot with an empty system partition. Flash SBF, root and you should be fine.

So, I assume I should not have deleted the system partition.
Anyway I flashed full sbf (JRDNEM_U3_3.4.3-36-1.7_CHINESE_SIGN_SIGNED_UCAJRDNEMARAB1B50AA03A.0R_PDS03C_USAJRDNFRYORTINT15_P002_A014_HWp3_Service1FF.sbf)
RSD lite was the main problem - did not detect the phone. I was pressing the volume down key to enter the boot loader menu, but I should have pressed the volume up key.
Finally realized my mistake and then corrected it.
Now I am on 4.1.2 (again, downloaded the wrong file) and hopefully the 4.3 (30 Oct) file won't take much time to download.
So, all is well.

[Q] Tried upgrading, now can't get to the home screen, I ruined the recovery.

I have the 2ndbootin thing, the stock moto recovery, and never ending boot animation. If I wipe the cache using the moto recovery, I can get it past the boot loop and then it gets stuck in "android is upgrading". I figured I can flash a custom recovery using RSD, the problem is I don't know, and googling the problem didn't came up with useful solutions. My top priority is to get the phone working again, and that it will have the data is got now (though I did a backup of the data before starting this failed upgrade).

Man, you need to start again from stock.
Install the stock SBF using RSD, root, install 2ndinit, install CM10, install CM10.2, install the updaterecovery.zip package, reboot (don't wipe), then install CM11 and Gapps. It worked for me, it worked for other defy users, it will work for you.

The defy doesn't really brick, because the bootloader is locked.
It may be no charge in the battery...
You need to use an external charger, or McGyver method, because the defy won't charge by the usb or wall charger...
After you make it, try RSD again, and choose the right SBF, from your carrier.
Hope it helps... gogogo defy :victory:
