So, I'd previously heard lots of great things about the MIUI rom. Unfortunately, I wasn't impressed. Setting up apps to specific windows was a lot more cumbersome than with other roms. I like having an icon that leads me to a menu with ALL of my apps. It's a lot easier to set them to certain pages after that. Also, unlocking my phone is slower bc I have to press down and hold the lock for a sec before I slide it. Honestly I like just swiping it. Now, these previous two issues I could live with if it weren't for this final problem, video playback. About 95% of my videos on my SD card wouldn't play. All I could think of was "ugh, this is Cyanogenmod all over again". Do you guys know of any fixes to these three problems (mainly the third one). I liked the rest of this rom quite a bit, but I refuse to run it if I can't play all of the silly videos I've taken in the past.
You can use a different launch. Adw, lpp, go launcher all use an app menu.
You can change the locksxreen style. There are really endless options there if you search.
Are your videos recorded in 720p from a blue rom? This is supposed to be addressed in this week's update. Meanwhile, you can use a different video player. I use rockplayer, other i've seen have recommended mxplayer.
Hope this helps

Follow all directions they give you to determine if you have a neon or non-neon processor... my dx and Sgt are both neon, but maybe yours isn't so check to be sure...
Sometimes if i try to open my videos from gallery they wont open, but if you open them from any file explorer they should open fine

Yeah your best bet is to get a new launcher. I would say I like using adw myself with miui, then editing the themes on miui.
Is it going to be worth installing ICS on Galaxy Tab??? give the hardware differences from lets say the Galaxy Tab plus, what possiable benifits would there be from Froyo original, Gingerbread ROM's, Honeycomb ROM's prior versions to the new ICS Ice Cream Sandwich BETA developement, I know what ICS brings to the table, but given having to deal with hardware limitation of original Galaxy Tab, what would be the biggest reason to have ICS on the GT other than just to have it? What apps or user needs could compel someone going thru this task to warrant the work involved?? What categories would be the most beneficial for example Graphics/Photo or File-Management or....
Any insight for people looking in to this project?
I've been running the alphas and betas on my galaxy s for like a week now, and I can't wait for it to run on my tab. I need WiFi and 3g on my tab, otherwise I'd be giving it a go already.
The benefits, well it's fun to play! I think it runs better than anything I've tried on my phone, and think it'll be great on this.
Tmob Galaxy Tab 7
Hi there,
i got alpha2 of the ICS build running on my tmob tab. Works great tbh cept for no wifi and no edge data yet but Angel_666 says he's got data running now and wifi soon.
Someone put up bc4329.ko wifi driver supposedly compiled for our tab and ics and i tried to adb push it to the tab and then insmod it in but got
~ # insmod /data/bcm4329.ko
insmod /data/bcm4329.ko
insmod: can't insert '/data/bcm4329.ko': invalid module format
so hopefully they've fixed that
Also i couldnt seem to successfully edit build.prop within the zip file. every time i did the zip would not install.
finally gave up and just adb pulled the build.prop down off the tab, edited it, pushed it back and rebooted
ICS looks great in the 160dpi mode. Hope the wifi drivers are up sometime this week.
Battery life seems ok so far...will keep more track.
thanks
meh
Good question
One we need to hear more about!
It's worth it...I got alpha 2 on my t-mobile..as soon as WiFi is up...it will be better...battery life is great I got 4 days and 6 hours before my tablet died

Alpha 4
Well Alpha 4 was up last night and i snagged it and applied the root and wifi fixes and everything seems to be working. The terminal app they had included did not work and crashed whenever i tried to "install" it from the market. Also superuser shows up under not install in the my apps section. edit: now it seems the thread doesnt have alpha 4 listed?? wth
Otherwise wifi is working fine.
I cant seem to find adobe flash player in the market now either just AIR...is there no flash for ICS?
if you are running the build and seem to be stuck in portrait mode and want to switch to landscape, open the camera app and it will switch to landscape then hit home again and bingo - stuck in landscape mode now.
Hello,
It is not ready for daily operations, but looks very promising.
For now it is wise to stick with alpha3 with patches and do some testing.
I took a look at the thread over the development section. i'll give it a try here in a bit I think, just to test it out. if the bugs and kinks can get worked out, such as the camera, then I think it will pretty cool. that's just my $0.02 though.
My experiences with ICS on VZW tab.
Graphic Acceleration not working or not smooth (UI, Browser) but good enough to play Sudoku or Angry Birds without lag.
WiFi slow on establishing connection but fine after connection.
Orientation not working correctly.
Some font and UI resizing issues, some launcher features missing, miscellaneous minor issues.
[And I think GPS is not working, but I do not use the tab GPS anyway]
[Camera is not working, but no big issue for me]
Other than that, the AOSP build is working wonderfully. I can play music, video in portrait, read email and sync with MS exchange (I think that's all I do). And of course, get a sneak peek at the new Android OS and the SDK!

The ICS issue aren't due to the hardware not being able to do ICS stuff but more so lack of binary files needed to support said hardware. Given that the Nexus S OTA is out now we should start to see some progress. Don't ever expect a 100% working rom though.

ICS is great, the UI is much better, and it´s optimized for Tablets
It is definitely worth to install ICS on galaxy tab as it is design for tablet, been using it for days and find that the alpha build is quite stable except for some minor bugs but it is still usable.
It is still in Alpha stage but the rom will get better in the next release

Definitely worth it, if only to have a Tablet-oriented OS on the Tablet. Using ICS on the Galaxy Tab is such a hugely pleasurable experience. My wife has an iPhone but loves ICS. So much so that she's getting my 2nd Galaxy Tab when I've finished playing with ICS on it (i.e. when we get a version that's good enough as a Daily Driver) and we'll fund another data SIM for it.

I've been playing around with several of the great ICS Roms for the Kindle Fire, especially once the 3.0 kernel really got rolling. Since this is the only device I currently have that can run any type of ICS, it's still fairly new to me. I was wondering what advantages people saw to ICS on the KF vs. using a rooted version of stock (like MoDaCo), and vice versa.
Please note, this isn't in any way meant to disparage the great work all the devs are doing with the kernel and different ICS Roms.
Here's my initial take (and please note, these are just my opinions), but would love more opinions.
Rooted stock
1. Stock reader: To me, the reader on the stock (or rooter stock) rom is much better than the Kindle for Android app
2. Kindle Fire apps: If you bought any, like I did before I started changing roms around, than you can still use these. Haven't been able to do so (yet) with any of the ICS roms
3. Market: Because it's rooted, I still have access to Google Play as well (limited to Gingerbread apps I'm sure) (don't know if this is really an advantage per se, but I thought it was a worthwhile point)
4. Battery: I had better battery life with the stock rom than with any of the ICS roms (*Note*: I know this item is likely temporary, since a lot of work is going into the 3.0 kernel)
5. Stability: Obviously, the ICS/3.0 items are still being worked on, so for now, the stock is likely going to experience fewer things like FCs and dropped WiFi (*Note*: Again, i'm sure this is temporary)
ICS
1. Interface: Likely a big reason many people switch over, the ICS interface is (to me) much cleaner and more user-friendly. Also, more customizable
1a. Tablet specific: Since ICS was created for for phones and tablets, the interface also works really well for a tablet, instead of just being a port of a phone interface.
2. USB OTG: I know this is a big point for a lot of people with the 3.0 kernel development, but having this even working a little is definitely a bonus
Thanks all.
The modaco rooted stock also has kindle owners lending library and amazon instant video. The ics doesn't.

ICS is faster and more customizable. I think that's reason enough for me.
Dropped wifi is damn annoying but I'll live with it until something can be done.
Battery life for me has been about the same for me with stock and ICS though.
In the end, it's all about the apps for me so stock wins out over ICS. But the interface is so much smoother on ICS, and because hardware acceleration works it's now a much tougher choice to make.

Rooted stock.
1. It's actually the same all behind the scenes.. could be placebo that makes stock feel nicer.
2. Just download the amazon app store and any app you bought on amazon will be available on an device or os.
3. Google play is google play. Not sure about it being limited to anything though. I think it uses galaxy tab 10.1 build.prop.
4. Seems about the same to mee. Unles you are pre 4/28 kernel and your unit wad not deep sleeping right.
5. On energy ics with 4/28 kernel I have not yet dropped WiFi or had a single FC. But.on previous builds it was pretty unstable.
ICS.
1. It is nice, but not having the full screen for icons sucks. Is like an asop build at some point. Still better than stock 6.3 with go launcher.
2.USB host is kick ass..
Bottom line.
If you need book borrowing or amazon streaming then stock non rooted is really the best way to go. Of you could care leas about borrowing or streaming (srsly, netflix and hulu have twice the content and its not a dollar f-ing 99 PER episode!! wtf amazon.. 80 bucks a year for prime and that's how you do me? 1.99 per episode of New Girl? Thanks for the reply. A couple of counter-points to yours:
1. The stock reader is actually a bit different from the Kindle App. The stock reader handles things like margins and line spacing better than the android app. I tested this out with the same book on both. I think the ICS android app still needs some work, as the Gingerbread/CM7 version also looks better than than ICS one (my opinion).
2. Actually, even installing the Amazon App store will typically not let you install games/apps with the Kindle Fire Edition moniker. Most apps will work just fine, you're correct, but any of those specific ones (I think mostly games, but could be others) won't even show up, much less install. Folks have even tried the full titanium backup/restore with mixed results. So, if you don't have any of these kinds of apps, this is really a non-issue.
Thanks.
I was staying away from ICS due to lack of hw accel, but I switched over recently.
However, I saw that Wired magazine app doesn't work on ICS so I had to return back to stock.
Now, I'm considering dualbooting ICS with stock. It seems to be the most viable option.

No, I haven't heard of it, but I'll give it a look, thanks.
I've tried both and found ICS slower on calling up web pages.
I really don't see what it adds to the party over and above Modaco.
I would describe ICS as more like tossed salad as in it's all over the place.
Also Amazon Appstore wouldn't install or me on ICS. Maybe because I am outside the US
Any app that is designated as [Kindle Fire Edition] will only work on the stock KF. So that's something to think about when buying apps from Amazon Appstore. I really hate the KF UI and much prefer ICS. The home page carousel is the worst.

I was actually able to get one Kindle Fire Edition app to work on ICS, Dead Space. Had to to a backup using Titanium Backup from MoDaCo and then restore to ICS. Of course, I likely won't get any updates. Funny thing is, this same process wouldn't work for 2 Gameloft games (DH2 and Asphalt 6).
So guys I was asking myself "is it worth flashing?". Why you ask? Well because if I took a look in the development section and it doesn't look like any of the current roms out are stable and they all seem to have many know issues. So I would like to know what you have flashed and how you like the experience compares to stock rom?
Sent from my SGH-T989 using Tapatalk
I have flashed a bunch of roms on this tab. Most of them are stable now. ALL of them running ics are better than the honeycomb touchwiz that comes pre installed. The only caveat I say to you, is that the camera still isn't working on the roms I've been using as my dailies. (Aokp and Nightlies) If that's a deal killer for you, then stay away from the ics builds for now. But I can tell you as someone who has a 2 year + old Droid Incredible running ics AND this tab running ics, I can never go back. Its just THAT good. Especially on this tab where it Truly shows off the big improvements on the OS.

Ah OK. (Just realised you're right)
I'm using overcome 2.3.1. It's not ics. It's pretty nice. Went from multiple daily reboots to 3 or 4days of uptime. I use it a lot for reading, browsing, netflix, remote mgmt of servers and it holds up well. I bought 3 Samsung docks and have it hooked up to my home theater for music via hdmi, on my nightstand (ditched the tv in the bedroom) and another in my office. I wouldn't have been able to keep it without a rom. Give it a shot. Take your time and read up, it's pretty simple. I'm kinda pissed they made such a great tablet and put such a horrible buggy os on it.
I saw all the comments here suggesting to throw a rom on it to improve performance but I didn't put much stock in it. It's not an exaggeration. You have to ditch the tw launcher too. I'm using Go's tablet edition. I guarantee you will not go back to stock. I chose overcome because it's really stable. No point trying to escape bugs and using a buggy rom.
Getting off my soapbox now. Good luck with whatever you decide.

Yes that was one of my major concerns of ics. I'm running dark sides evolution 2 beta 3 on my sgs2. But when I came here to read about the 10.1 ics versions I was kind of sad. Because like it was said the 10.1 is awesome but cannot be used on stock w/o mods. With Task v14, I feel that the Galaxy tab is vastly improved from the stock bloatware.
I don't really care about ICS on the Galaxy. Task 14 is so good, I don't see ICS as improving much. I have ICS running on HP Touchpad and Kindle Fire, right now.
it's nice, but IMHO not really worth all of the hype over an optimized GB ROM. YMMV.
Task v 14 is really great, highly recommend it over any ics roms.

my $.02: My use-case for my tablet is almost entirely at home. I have the Wi-Fi only model, so I don't do a lot of "mobile" stuff with it. I have a Galaxy Nexus phone which I generally carry everywhere.
What I thought: As a techie, I want everything to be fully working just because, and as a result I cannot accept a tablet without a working camera!
Real Life: I use my tablet for IM, web browsing, reading comics, and playing games, generally around the house or while commuting. That's actually it. Number of times I did a video chat on my tablet: 1. Number of times I actually wanted to video chat on my tablet: maybe 2. Because I work with a Galaxy Nexus all the time, having the same OS & ROM on both devices is honestly nicer / easier / more lazy-friendly. Its honestly pretty slick to have Chrome syncing across my computers, my phone, and my tablet.
I recently tried to go back to Honeycomb since I once again thought "gee maybe I should use the camera on my tablet". Honeycomb just feels like ICS with training wheels on it I really don't like it as much. This probably as much a placebo effect as anything. Also, the camera isn't as good as my Galaxy Nexus or my actual camera, and I feel like a douche holding my tablet up to take a picture. Would being able to Skype on my tablet be cool? Yes. Would I use it that often? No.
I'm going back to AOKP damnit. I can deal with a non-working camera for a while.
And GPS??? My device doesn't have mobile data, so it really doesn't matter to me that much, even though I thought it would.
Bottom Line: You can back all your stuff up, and you're not out anything, so why not try it?

Also, the camera isn't as good as my Galaxy Nexus or my actual camera, and I feel like a douche holding my tablet up to take a picture. Would being able to Skype on my tablet be cool? Yes. Would I use it that often? No.
I'm going back to AOKP damnit. I can deal with a non-working camera for a while.
And GPS??? My device doesn't have mobile data, so it really doesn't matter to me that much, even though I thought it would.
Bottom Line: You can back all your stuff up, and you're not out anything, so why not try it?

i feel exactly the same, i just migrated to AOKP last night, and so far the benefits of it being a lot "zippier" is good. I do a lot of typing and multitasking viewing pdf and docs etc is a better experience on ICS than HC.....
music? camera? i have my handy SGS for that.......

What ggps problems? I just got a good fix (8 used) inside! I'd say the gps is working pretty well
Let's face it, no matter how much business you can make with your Nexus 7, a tablet is designed mainly for entertainment. A bigger screen usually means that we get to enjoy certain medias on a bigger screen, aka videos. However not every streaming website can afford or even cares enough to have fancy apps like Youtube and if you stream live channels online for emergency sports on your work computer you would know that flash still plays a part in our daily life.
As Adobe quits on Flash on our future Androids to get everyone into the HTML5 stage, PC users will still have a fairly high amount of data for grabs through Flash but our tablets will be losing that whole side of information while the transition goes through. Although I don't, but I could imagine my girlfriend playing an online Flash game on my 7 but it won't happen anymore.
and... we lose one thing to show-off to the iOS users...
How is everyone else coping with the fading of Flash on our mobile devices?
you can still side load flash and use it with other browsers it works well

pretty easy to get flash..
First install the AOSP browser:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1780746
After that, I still had some newer flash content saying it needed the latest flash player, so installed the two flash players from this thread:
http://forums.androidcentral.com/go...189897-no-flash-got-you-down-try-fix.html#anb
Works perfectly now!
Yeah I was bummed out when I first read that on Adobes web site. Yeah eventually most sites will hopefully change or add support for our tablets and phones to compensate foir Adobe doing that however being that we have the lovely OS that we do there are very easy workarounds! I installed the AOSP browser @ http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1780746 and flash @ https://www.dropbox.com/s/cgsd3gyy7v6c90j/com.adobe.flashplayer-1.apk This is great too because I prefer the AOSP browser (I love the full screen mode with quick controls). The bookmarks don't sync though.. So I just kept the Chrome Bookmarks widget on my homescreen and set the default browser as Browser. Works like a charm!
I despise flash so I don't miss it on my device, at least not for anything important. Bring on HTML5!
yea everyone despises flash. high CPU usage low performance. but it has been playing such a big part in the past 10 years or so that it might just be TOO sudden a change when not everyone has gone to HTML5 and officially taken out flash as a whole. This might hurt Android as it is a crucial time Post-Jobs for android to have a major counter attack on iOS and an obvious visible advantage has been taken out.
I sideloaded flash & firefox for iplayer but other than that I haven't missed, the sooner flash dies the better.

I have had absolutely no problem with not having Flash.
When you referred to other streaming sites, are you talking about porn sites? lol
I sideloaded flash and the AOSP browser so I could use iPlayer, but that's pretty much it. Also added the iPlayer app once I found the APK.

It works for now but as time goes on and android has more updates how long will it continue to work? At some point it may break completely.
