I have a Nook Simple Touch. I purchased it approximately a month ago. That would be September 2012.
I want to check out Library books.
I use Linux. Zenwalk 7.0
Overdrive seems to only work with Adobe Digital Edition. (cough) Windows or MAC.
ADE has DRMs.
B&N don't allow the installation of Overdrive App. Sideloading don't work etc.
So I wanted to root my nook.
I rooted my nook with noogie.img and tried it with touchnooter which I liked better.
Everything was working great. I accessed my Email. Just started checking it out. Started to install Opera Mini, when the public wifi where I was at shut down for the night.
Next morning I start up my nook again on public wifi; apparently from what I understand from other forums and threads is that nook automatically updates. B&N have decided Nook ST doesn't need or deserve Overdrive. Despite there terms of usage which say you can surf the net with Nook they lie. So their latest update blocked all my wifi.
I have restored to factory stock. Lost all my books and my ability to use my Nook at all because I can't access the internet because B&N reroute me to a page that tells my all my wifi is blocked.
I have formatted the noogie. img sd card and added bravo_update.dat. Followed all the directions here. Restoring WiFi Config @ nookDevs.com/tips and tricks]
Would appreciate any help I could get.
Thank you in advance.
I cant help with restoring your Nook, but when you do -
I download with Overdrive, then remove the DRMS using ePub DRM Removal or Epubor DRM Removal.
there are also other DRM removal programs out there.
DRM removal
Dear Ladykayaker,
I'm not looking to remove the DRMs. Though eventually I may be, LOL. I respect my library. I respect the copyrights of the authors.
My problem is I don't want left out of the party. Just because I use Linux. I shouldn't be left out of Overdrive. Just because I bought the cheapest Nook because of the long battery life, ease of reading the pages, cost effectiveness etc.; doesn't mean that I don't want to use the library.
However this thread is about getting my Nook working.
Perhaps I'll start another thread about Overdrive and Linux but I'm not sure that this website is the proper place to do that.
I really appreciate your feedback though Ladykayaker.
Still working on getting my NOOK working.
Today I'm going to try SalsichaNooter.
Thanks,

AFAIK, B&N never said that you could browse with the NST.
This sounds like a problem with whichever WiFi you are using, not B&N.
The OverDrive through Adobe Digital Editions uses different DRM than the OverDrive app on the Nook.
I use both, but you are limited to the respective readers unless you strip DRM.
Overdrive, Linux, Nook ST and Me
Wow, lots of good stuff here.
First:
ladykyaker maybe I should have listened to you better. Okay I'm going to do work on stripping DRMs
Second: Renate NST I appreciate your information that Nook and Adobe Digital Edition use two different DRM.
Next: Renate NST I have no idea what AFAIK stands for. If you're trying to say some version of FYI that I would understand. SO... FYI for you Renate.
NOOK™ TERMS OF SERVICE
These Terms of Service (this "Agreement") is a legally binding agreement made by and between Barnes & Noble, Inc. ("we," "us," or "our") and you regarding your use of your NOOK™ eReader ("NOOK").
THIS AGREEMENT SETS FORTH THE RIGHTS AND OBLIGATIONS APPLICABLE TO THE USE OF YOUR NOOK, SO PLEASE READ IT CAREFULLY BEFORE USING YOUR NOOK. BY USING YOUR NOOK, YOU AGREE THAT YOU HAVE READ, UNDERSTAND AND AGREE TO BE BOUND BY THIS AGREEMENT. IF YOU DO NOT AGREE TO BE SO BOUND, YOU MUST RETURN YOUR NOOK AND RELATED SOFTWARE AS PROVIDED IN SECTION 1(b) BELOW.
1. Using Your NOOK.
(a) Your NOOK, the Service and Digital Content. Your NOOK is an electronic device that is designed to allow you to read digitized electronic content such as eBooks and digital periodicals ("Digital Content"). Your NOOK is also designed to connect wirelessly to the Internet to enable you to browse, preview, search for, purchase and download Digital Content; access the Barnes & Noble.com Web Site (the "Web Site") and other web sites; interface with social networking sites; and access, use, and participate in other services, features, functions and promotions (all features described in this sentence, collectively, the "Service"). Your NOOK also allows you to load and access your own content onto the device for your personal use ("Sideloaded Content").
Now I don't know what that means to you Renate but to me that means I can use my Nook to connect wirelessly to the internet. That I can browse, preview, search for, puchase and download Digital Content, interface with social networking sites and access, use and participate in other services features, functions and promotions.
Now this is a 144 page document so I'm sure they have a legal way out of it. B & N does offer Overdrive for the tablet and the Nook Color but not for the simple touch. Oh BTW at the end of that 144 page document are special conditions for AT&T customers.
However, I don't want to argue over this.
I was hoping for intelligent feedback about my Nook. As far as I am concerned this thread is over. I will start a new thread about Overdrive and another thread about Rooting my Nook then perhaps there won't be so much confusion.
Thanks for the help.
dandielionous
P.S.
Ya'll can do what you want with this thread. I'm not responding here anymore.
Oh 1 more thing. It says clearly on the web page I am being blocked by B&N.
Also I am using public wifi. So no matter where I go I can't access the wifi with the Nook or I couldn't. I have solved that problem.
I hope you have put a little more thought and research Renate into those other 855 posts you've responded to.
Sorry, AFAIK means "as far as I know".
You get credit for reading the whole legalese, I didn't.
I would really appreciate a screenshot of this screen saying that B&N is blocking you.
AFAIK, nobody has ever reported this.
I successfully rooted my new Nook STG with NookManager. Thanks for developing such an easy root.
I was able to load apps from Amazon App Store. I was also able to install apks using my dropbox app on the nook as well as using Android Commander on my PC.
But my main purpose for rooting was to install the Overdrive app so that I can load books directly from our public/work libraries on the nook and read. I tried installing the apk from overdrive site but it doesnt work.
Does anyone have an APK that works with 1.2 and NookManager root? I also tried a version that said (2.4.2.2) of the apk that I found on another site but it doesnt work.
Also the aldiko apk (2.1.0) installed fine but crashes with the SD card in the nook. It opens fine when the SD card is not loaded in the nook. So am unable to load books as I cannot access the acsm file that I download from the library to load the ADE books.
Thanks.
That's the same reason I rooted. Its really silly that you can easily check out books on your smartphone and not your e-reader. Once you get it going on the Nook its great. I looked a little for an Overdrive that works but ended up with Aldiko version 2 instead. To get Aldiko working with an library once you've installed it:
Open Aldiko
Open the menu | Settings | Adobe DRM and enter your Adobe Id & password to authorize your Nook then exit Settings
Click on the shopping cart icon at the upper right
Open the menu | My catalogs.
Click on the + at the upper right and enter a name for your library and the Overdrive URL then click OK.
Now you can click on the library in My catalogs to go to the Overdrive site and check out books and they will open in Aldiko. I reassigned the search button on the quicknav to Aldiko with the Nook Touch Mods Manager that NookManager installs and now it works like every e-reader should out of the box.
UPDATE: Just noticed you had tried Aldiko before. My link is for an older version that works on the Nook just fine. I haven't had any reader app work with the browser downloading the .acsm then clicking on it. For some reason they don't get hooked up with the automatic open when you click on .acsm files. But with Aldiko you browse from inside the Aldiko app and it works fine. I believe this version of Aldiko will open without the SD card inserted but needs it inserted to download books.
Thanks for the detailed steps, will give that a try. By the overdrive url, you mean the library overdrive url?

Yep. Like http://brevard.lib.overdrive.com for my local Brevard County library.
Cool. that worked just right. With dropsync everything else also seems to fall in place.
Wondering if its possible to use the side buttons to navigate a book within the aldiko app?

There is a hack to the system key layout to remap the side buttons to volume control keys and Aldiko can use the volume controls to scroll. But the B&N reader doesn't use the volume control keys to scroll. So some people map two of the side keys to volume controls and leave the others as normal or don't use the B&N reader and use all four as volume controls. I really didn't like that idea so I spent the last week playing with Nook Touch Mod Manager / Nook Touch Patches and modifying them to be able to remap the side buttons to screen taps so they work with the B&N reader, Aldiko and just about any other reader you choose to install. Plus you can map long presses to open apps, bring up the menu, go back and any other NTMM action. I have a PM out to jeff_z the NTMM / NookTouchPatches developer (thanks a whole bunch for NTMM, NookTouchPatches and NookManager Jeff!) to see if he would like to merge my changes into NTMM. Keep an eye on the NTMM thread and one way or another I'll make the changes available in the next week or so.
Cool. That worked. Thanks
I used Android Commander.
First do a chmod 777 on the file in the shell,
then pull the file to c:
modify using notepad++ in admin mode
then a push on the nook with the modified file.
Reboot the Nook and voila! Works on the kindle app as well.
Overdrive and Nook Glowlight
Just in case you still wanted to put Overdrive on your rooted Nook Glow: I also successfully rooted with NookManager. (So simple! Thanks!) Found an older version of Overdrive 2.3.0.1 which works fine. Sorry I can't post the link, but go to freeware4android.net and search "android 2.1 overdrive media console". It should be about the fifth or sixth result down the list ending with "overdrive-media-console-download- 127505.html." I just downloaded the file to SD card in my nook, clicked open and it installed fine. Haven't tried Aldiko, but I like the one-click convenience of having Overdrive automatically open the .ascm library files.
Incidentally, when I registered my device, I also unchecked the "automatic updates" box in Overdrive settings, to prevent Overdrive from trying to update to a newer version that's not compatible with the device. Happy reading!

It looks like you cannot use the stock reader to open Overdrive books that you have downloaded. Is that correct? I would think that the reader app itself should handle the copy protection (since you can side load books using the Adobe app on your computer) but it doesn't seem to work that way...

Does seem to make sense if you've downloaded a book using Overdrive you should be able to open it with the built in reader. Never tried it though as I'm happy enough with the OD reader.
Hey does anybody still have that older version of the Overdrive apk lying around? That freeware4android site looks like it's infested with malware these days.

Rooted Nook ST Glow and new Overdrive site
Not sure if this is the right thread to post this question: Has anyone else been unable to sign into their library from rooted nook ST after the library has updated to the new overdrive? Main reason I rooted my nook was so I could download library books directly. Now, I can see the main page fine and get to the sign in page, but after entering my information I get a generic error message. I have a nook simple touch with glowlight rooted with Nook Manager and using Opera mobile to get to library site. I'm thinking the new overdrive site just isn't compatible with android 2.1, but hoping someone out there has a solution.

I tried this and came away without success. I don't have an Overdrive login and so tried to use my library card number and got the error message you describe. But there's no problem with the display of my local portal using Opera Mobile, as far as I can tell--other than being painfully slow. I should add that I am using the old Overdrive app that seems to work best with the NST, not an updated version. Just out of curiosity I tried to start from the Opera itself and my library site. When I had selected a book I had to sign in, of course, and was met with the same error. This leads me to suspect a security certificate problem.
I also have a little non-registered KitKat phone which I use as a media player and it has the new Overdrive app on it so I tried again. This time everything went fine and I got my ebook. I couldn't see that book on my NST, not even sure if that's supposed to work but it seemed like the new version of the app was claiming it would if you set up your account properly so I set about doing that on the device. But when I tried to sign in with my library card number I got that same error!
So....maybe it's an issue right now with Overdrive--or the app--that will go away. It may also be that the security certificates needed to negotiate a book checkout have expired on the NST. I am using the updated certs. file discussed elsewhere on the forum, but it may not include whatever is needed for Overdrive. I know the app worked the last time I tried it, but don't recall when that was.
In general, I do not find it helpful to allow apps on the NST/G to autoupdate from the Market. I have turned off autoupdate on all of them. The chances are great that "improvements" will break functionality or severely hobble performance. Of course, log-in issues are complicated. I guess a logcat might reveal something but since the app interacts with the browser and the actual checkout of the book is done via the browser, I'm not sure what you'd learn.
Thanks for looking into this. Yes, I also have the older version of Overdrive on my nook st, and am using my library card sign in. The Overdrive app takes me to Opera mobile, and the library home page shows up no problem. It's the sign in page where I enter my library card number that has the problem. I tried signing in to a different library that has not updated their website yet, and no problem - was able to sign in and download a book and open it on the nook as usual. Security certs seems like a good point, or is it possible the older version of opera mobile might not be compatible with the new overdrive website? Since opera mobile displays the library home page just fine, maybe the sign in problem is something that will resolve itself later. Here's hoping!

So here's what I've tried so far:
1. Installed a more modern browser, Opera Mini. It's the last version that "works" on the NST (7.6.40234). I don't use it because there is no multi-touch zoom and it often has issues loading new pages in the same screen. Anyway, it gives exactly the same error for a log-in attempt, starting from the Overdrive app and proceeding as you describe. So it's less likely a old browser issue.
2. I asked member @tshoulihane to take a look at the possibility of a security certificate issue here (and his response follows that post). I do think it's odd that neither browser is throwing up a security error. I could track down a few more browsers, but I'm reluctant to put a bunch more junk on my NST.
3. I checked out a book on my PC and downloaded the acsm file. Then I transferred that to my NST and accessed the file through a file manager. The Overdrive app opened immediately and the download commenced without any problem. The book was readable. I don't know what the app does if you're working through it and the resident browser, but I didn't see any obvious place to put the acsm file and it didn't seem to matter. Once the book is downloaded you don't need the acsm file any more.
So...the app "works", or can work, given the requisite tools.
I've got a support ticket open with Overdrive regarding this issue. The initial response is not promising ("clear the browser cache, blah-blah-blah..."). I'm going to take a few screen shots and write a very basic reply to go with them, including most of what I've described here, but I'm not holding out much hope from that quarter.
Edit: after I sent the email to Overdrive I thought about another experiment that might be illuminating. I installed both Opera Mobile and Opera Mini (the versions for the NST) on my little KitKat "phone". They seemed to work OK accessing my local library, but Mobile crashed and closed once the Overdrive "sign in" icon was touched, and Mini gave the same error we are discussing. Hmm. I also tried accessing Overdrive from the browsers on my Nook Tablet (Dolphin and the native CM 12 browser) and the native KitKat browser on my "phone". Those worked just fine. So it's looking like some new requirement in the Overdrive web update may have left our NST browsers in the dust.
I tracked down a Dolphin 10.x browser which is the last of the series that sort of runs on the NST. Surprise, surprise! It threw up all kinds of security certificate messages as soon as I got to the Overdrive section, didn't even have to try to log in. I'll pass this along to @tshoulihane.
So I have 2 nooks, one with updated certificates, one with the original setup still. Both are happy with digicert (the old nook still has a couple f non-expired root certificates). I have UC browser installed - With that, https://overdrive.com shows a 'broken padlock' on the old nook, but no explicit warnings. If i try to sign-in from that page, I get a 'certificate expired'. However, I think the site is using google to provide login management (maybe only as an option), and it is the https://google.com certificate which is failing. So i an explain the old nook failing, but not the one with updated certificates (so long as you're using the 2nd certificates file which I uploaded).

Thanks for taking a look at this. Yes, I am using the second file (the "more complete"), and everything else from Kindle to Google Books is fine. If @c1gum hadn't brought up the Overdrive issue I would not have noticed it for awhile. So...a puzzle.
I guess I'll wait to see what the support tech at Overdrive has to say, although he doesn't yet have the information about the certificate panic with Dolphin. More likely than not it will be the standard line about updating the devices/apps/OS. I guess I'd better get screen caps of those certificate error details.
A workaround for now
OK, so this discussion has taken place in two different threads. Time to bring it back where it belongs so people can find the info.
Thanks to member @cjpicc, we now know that the UC Browser Mini 10.6.8 (copy attached below) can negotiate the Overdrive login at your local library branch and allow you to check out and download books all on your NST/G.
So far, no other common browsers used successfully on the NST/G for general purposes seem to be able to deal with the revamped Overdrive sites.
You can, of course, check out and download books on a PC, transfer the acsm file to your NST/G and access it with a file manager. That will open Overdrive and --if you're connected to Wi-Fi--download the full book to your device.
Edit: OK, not the best experience with UC browser. You can sign in, but the search bar does not show up so you have to go to the main library catalog and search there. At least that was my experience with the two libraries I tried.
I just got a Nook UK in the last sale and it's my first one, so I'm a total noob to the e-book world.
However, I'm an android user and rom flashing addicted for long, so since I got my reader I've only been tweaking it and haven't actually read a word... haha.
So, already updated to 1.2.1, rooted, kernel tweaks and the whole lot. I haven't installed gapps on it to keep it minimal as possible, I'm dowloading the apks on my phone and installing via ADB.
So, on to the question:
by removing all these B&N apps does it mean I won't be able to sync/buy from their store?
I'm already getting to know Calibre and checking other places to buy books, but it looks like that if I remove the apps and one day would like to buy from B&N again the only option would be to re-install the apps in order to get the ebook or am I missing something?
Some of you disable all of the B&N apps, like:

Want to keep my NST minimal and remove all clutter, but:
how do you guys manage your ebooks and where do you buy them from without the B&N apps and what to do If I ever want to buy from them again?
Probably wouldn't be able to buy on device without having the B&N apps installed/enabled or maybe the standalone Nook Android app. Not sure if with that setup it'd be able to read DRM'd Nook books (probably wouldn't auto load them, but might be able to when sideloaded) but if it can't it's very easy to strip the DRM, and you can buy and download the book from your browser on your computer. Or if it's available DRM free in another store that might also be an option

I wouldn't mind having to download to my computer and then transfer to the reader, but at least the B&N store doesn't give me the option to download.
Anyways, when I dig more into the reading world I'll find out the best set up soon enough.
I'm not guaranteeing it'll still be able to read the DRM'd books as I haven't tried the guide in question, it's always been either a full root or stock for me. That said, the Nook desktop application allows you to download the encrypted file, and all my purchased books show a download option in many places, such as on the overview page and from the "My Nook" landing. Even if the Nook itself can no longer read them, again not saying it will or won't, stripping of the DRM is trivial, Python script (also a Calibre plugin available that incorporates it and will auto strip any Nook books you import, and you can set it to auto import from a certain directory so you could point that to, say, the place where the Nook desktop app downloads them) that computes the key needed to decrypt (requires you to enter the credit card linked to your B&N account since that's part of the hash used, but the CC# is never written to disk or sent anywhere) and you can use it on any device that will read epubs, including the Nook if it no longer decrypts on device as it'll be treated like any other sideloaded DRM free book.

I got an UK Nook and for some reason it works differently. I got a book I bought from the e-reader, it shows on my account library at nook.com without option to download it and using the same login at the barnesandnobles.com it shows my nook connected to my account but the book does not show at the library...it looks like they made some weird distinctions on how to handle books bought outside US or something like that.
For testing, I added a free book to my library via nook.com, and it shows on my library at the barnesandnoble.com, so it seems that the books purchased in pounds won't behave the same way and don't have a straightforward way of downloading it.
I mean, I already took the file from the device and removed the DRM, but annoying that I'm not just able to download it.
Hello fellow Nookers,
I've been lurking around here for the past couple of years, only to join about 8mo ago. I find the amount of knowledge and willingness to help at XDA fascinating. There are clearly A LOT of intelligent people here that could probably solve many of the worlds problems, if collectively asked. So, a big virtual thumbs up to all of you.
Well, enough of the mushy stuff. I'm here for a reason right? I have quite a few general questions regarding things such as... a rooted nook, Google Play, .apk files, transferring .apk files, searchmarket, etc.. Rather than start separate threads, or jump on many existing threads, I figured it might be easier to list them in one thread.
So, here we go.
Above all other questions below, here is what I am ultimately after...
I am looking to download .apk game files from Google Play so that I can transfer/install them on my Kindle Fire HD. So why not root the KF? I have read posts that rooting a KF using Amazon Prime will render Prime useless. I need my Prime for watching movies/shows. The games I want from GP are not available on the less-than-stellar Amazon App Store. I value my KF device more than my outdated NST, which is why I have no issues rooting the NST.
Now for the questions...
(1) I've followed the [Root] NookManager post here at XDA ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2040351 ) and successfully rooted my NST running 1.2.1. Per the post, there were quite a few steps not mentioned according to this nook devs page ( http://nookdevs.com/Nook_Simple_Touch/Rooting ). [Q] Are the below areas from nook devs not necessary when following the [Root] NookManager post?
After you have burned the uSD card
#3
At the Android Welcome Screen skip "Sign In"
Enable Location Services when given the option.
Connect to Wifi and launch Youtube from ADW App Drawer.
Click the Menu button (On top at the right, next to the time.).
Select "My Channel" and Login using your Gmail Account (ensure the [email protected] format to link)
Exit Youtube and Launch Gmail.
Sync your Gmail Account and Exit. (If it fails to sync that is fine - it will do so later on if you give it a few minutes)
Open up Market and Accept Terms and Service.
(2) Before rooting, I changed the email address on B&N associated with the NST. The email with B&N matches the email I use for GP. However, the email on the NST, in account settings, is the previous email address. [Q] Is this an issue?
(3) When accessing GP on NST via the Browser App in ReLaunch, there are many games I cannot download. I get the message "This app is incompatible with your device". I've read a few posts online (outside of XDA) showing ways to spoof an older Android device to a current Android device. But, as with most things, it came with warnings and only working for devices running firmware higher than 1.2.1. [Q] Assuming this would trick GP into thinking I have a newer Android, is there a known way to accomplish spoofing a 1.2.1 device?
(4) Something worth pointing out... when accessing GP, and navigating to Settings/My Devices, "phone" is listed. However, when I go to Settings/Android Device Manager on GP, it states No Active Device Listed. [Q] Should there be a device in the Android Device Manager? If so, how to accomplish this?
(5) As it has been widely reported, the search feature on GP doesn't work when on the NST. For the record, I have noticed while in Settings, the search feature does in fact work. So, it has been suggested to use SearchMarket (which I have installed). However, this app seams to have its limitations. When I search for a game on SM, that I know is on GP, SM is not finding it. Also, the Market App within ReLaunch cannot find the game either. [Q] Is SM searching Market, and is Market different than GP?
(6) These next questions relate to downloading, rather than installing, apk files to the NST. Since my goal is to obtain apps from GP, that are not available via AAS, so I can install them on the KF, [Q] how can I have them sent to the mSD Card? [Q] Aside from using download/torrent sites to obtain .apk files, are there any "legal", safer, ways other than GP?
Well, I think that about covers it. I may regret saying this, but all of this came about because of one game... Blackout: Bring The Color Back. I am soooo hooked on that game. I first played it at Dave & Busters, and was hooked within minutes. I think I sat there playing it for a good 45 minutes. Then I found it on Apple's App Store. Now, I need it on the KF. If I could download this one game from GP, I would be ecstatic. LOL... can't believe I admitted that.
Thanks in advance.
Too detailed? I can dumb it down, if you think it'll help.

At the end of that guide did you follow and install the NTGAppsAttack package ?
If you read that guide it tells you the steps you read on nookdevs are some of the steps to sign in for first time to google.
I used NTGAppsAttack last night just fine. It is a little time sensitive so follow the intructions directly after installing.
Google recognized my NSTG instantly. The youtube trick is basically one of the methods to make google play acknowledge your device.

Maybe. Try suggested above and if does not work after a day go backup to your backup de-register nook and try again with other email.

NST is a android 2.1 device also known as Eclair.
Its an old version very old. Even those games you can run on the nook with norefresh/fastmode you will still sometime need to get hold of an older version thats supports 2.1.
Try Simon Tatham's Puzzles (the B n W at least)

Step one go to "Cog"->"Settings" on google play website. On right hand side click on EDIT on phone line and rename "phone" to be something better like "NST_1". Believe me you will regret not doing so when you have more than one!
Android Device manager requires a very up to date version GAPPS to work.
You want it to location your nook or blank it?

If your GAPPS updated itself then yes search may work. Searchmarket i expect does have different result ordering or interprets keywords slightly different or simply hides incompatible apps from you. Does it matter? You can use web version and install to device if your desperate.

No idea what AAS and KF mean. Personally I use titainium backup or esfile explorer to save my apks. You can get them on your NST using dropbox or over windows shares (samba) using esfileexplorer. If you get hold of version 1.6X of esfileexplorer it has option for white background still (might have brought it back in later versions). One advantage of saving your apks you can keep the version that does what you want not be forced to update to something breaks what you want like esfileexplorer.
Hmm KF = KindleFire?
Using gbooks_10_16.apk I can search and get a book list, but nothing happens when I click a book. The basket/cart and pay apparatus is missing. Does anyone know how I can fix this?
I've also tried gb152.apk, but this doesn't seem to work at all.
I rooted with Nook Manager and then ran NTGAppsAttack (both v.050). NTGAppsAttack went fine until I clicked on Market only to find there were no apps at all anywhere. I left the Nook near my wifi, with wireless on, for hours and finally What's App appeared. I'd have preferred something simpler, but installed it anyway and then, having doubts, uninstalled via the Apps Drawer. I then upgraded the Market and installed SearchMarket, which just brings up the search keyboard. However, it finds apps, thpough only free ones, and downloads them. The Market still shows only What's App, though something else appeared briefly. There was no Books app in the Apps Drawer, so I downloaded the above versions.

So just to be sure, you are using the NST?
You will see very few/no apps via the Market app. Sometimes the category list will dredge up an app or two (free), but you need SearchMarket to find anything. I think you are right about only free apps. It may be that the old apps cannot negotiate the security transactions for paid apps.
And on that topic, the non-function of the store in Gbooks is your least problem. Have you noticed that it doesn't upsync?! I and others have done a pretty thorough investigation of the various versions that will run on the NST.. The version you mention has a functioning reader but can't upsync. I think up to 1.3.5 the reader still works (going from memory here...) but no upsync. The oldest version that will currently sync is maybe 1.5.2, but only if you can get the book to actually display, which is more miss than hit.
I played with Gbooks for a long time, even though I've never used it. I don't think it's doable without a serious rewrite of the source.
If you haven't already, you'll need to update the certificates on your nook as described in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=65344931
Some older versions of Google Books will work, but maybe not all of the features. I have Books version 1.2.2 and can download purchased books from my library, although I purchased them on other devices. You can't purchase books on the old version of the Market or the books app since our nooks don't have Google Play Services, but you should be able to download books purchased on other devices (but same account.
You won't find many compatible apps in the Market at this point, and purchased apps have to be downloaded to other devices and then side loaded to the nook (assuming they're compatible). Some older working versions of apps can be found here on XDA.

Does your version upsync? If so can you post a copy of the apk?

Yes, I'm using the NST. I haven't looked at syncing because as I understand it this is just a question of convenience when reading on multiple devices, which is not my aim. I just want to get books onto the Nook. Many thanks.

Many thanks. This is very interesting, but I'll have to wrap a wet towel round my head before going back to the thread you suggest! Too late at night now.

It seems to upsync last read pages, roughly anyway since the formatting varies for different devices. Since this old version doesn't support anything like notes or highlights, I'm not sure what else it could sync.
What's the best/most practical way to share files on xda? While I've been lurking for quite some time, I only created an account fairly recently.

You can attach the apk file using the options below as you compose your reply or if you're not able to do that yet you can provide a link to any safe place where you can store a copy (Dropbox, etc.) so that people can access the file.
This is sort of amazing. I've never run into a version number like that and am really curious to see what it can do. Casual reading and syncing are all I would care about.

I've solved my problem now. I've been trying to download books from Google, first to my NookST and then to my laptop. But I'm running 32-bit Linux on my laptop and Google, like Adobe, seems determined to exclude Linux from the world of ebooks. So I downloaded to my Android phone and was quite surprised when the book also appeared on my Nook. I was offered the option of syncing, but decided not to be too ambitious in case it caused problems with the rather old Nook software.
It may have helped that I did all the NTGAppsAttack process on my Nook (I didn't want to go to the laptop because of the Linux problem). After I typed in my phone number I first tried to confirm on the phone and, when that didn't work, typed in the confirm number on my Nook. So perhaps the 2 devices finally got quite firmly linked.
I'll have a go at attaching the Google Books version I'm using, gbooks_10_16.apk.
I got it from another post on this forum. The reader works well but doesn't have a search facility.

Here's the md5 for the attached file generated by Android File Verifier:
bde6462cde86e0521d0b78270e11adb4
I think I probably got this apk when it was posted a long time ago, but I can't remember for sure. I just let Lookout scan it again and it came up "safe", for whatever that's worth.

Well done!! People have been searching for a version of GBooks that would sync for years! I can confirm that this works with free books from Google as well as user-uploaded books. I don't have any books purchased from Google so could not check that.
As with other versions, it helps to have a hardware key assigned to "menu" in order to access things like font size, etc., while reading (I use a long-press of the lower right button).
This is really a great discovery. I'll have to update the various other threads with a pointer to your post.

Thanks for all the info, guys. Second time you've steered me in the right direction, nmyshkin. NB Attaching the apk file was difficult because the process was incredibly slow (and not even a whirligig). Lots of notices about scripts that had stalled. I'm running Linux Mint 17 (Cinnamon) 32-bit; browser is Firefox.
