[Q] Increase RAM with flash memory on defy - Defy Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hello,
im using Motorola Defy MB525 with cm9 4.0.3
my q is, can I somehow increase the RAM with the sdcard memory (like create something like virtual RAM or something like that) to improve my phone performance ?
it preety slow because it still Beta and i want it to be fast as cm7 so i thoght it may help.
anybody tried it before ?

You can do it by swap, but you need really good sd-card (class 8 or 10), because it can slow down your phone.
Don't you have enough ram?

unfortunatly, i think that its the only way to speed up my phone, becuase i wont take the risk with oc above 1000Mhz
its this or wait till cm9 will be official for defy and hope it will be faster, one of the two.

+1 to the idea was thinking about it the other day
Would a 32gb class 10 work and partition a gb or two? It is complete overkill to the size of ram but I think a gb would be quicker than our 500mb as system steals about 250-300 minimum
teamwork makes the dream work

If someone can do this with a 32 GB class 10, can you please share with us ? I am very interested. Thanks!

We cant do swap... our kernels dont suport it...

now cm7 can swap

More and more ROMs support swap, but unless you are willing to sacrifice a good Class 10 card for it, most people don't want to use it. Because SD and NAND are not meant to be written and read from as much as RAM, it can break down.
Use CM10 ROMs or GB roms, they are much superior to ICS in memory management imho.

I have teh same problen, not enough RAM in CM7 Defy.
It can slow the phone.
can i use some memory swap with my 32gb c10 card?
Or i use an memory killer, like CleanMaster?

I recomended use memory killer, because you can screw up 32gb 10 card (c10 cards are expensive).

ultimate phone guide... ie How to setup your phone to run the fastest please.

i'm just curious if there is a way or a guide on how to setup your phone to be the most efficient and fastest that it can offer?
what i'm really asking is there a tweakers guide to making the WILDFIRE run as smoothly as possible..
Also i'm wondering if there is a specific way to setup your sd card so that your phone could utilize some of the space on the card so that it could use it as ram at all so that the phone may respond a little faster.
Yes there are several ways...one of them is to change your wildfire for desire..
I am just fooling around...
I think you should look for cyogen rom or some ono that is faster that stock and overclock your processor and I thing thats the only way to improve performance significantly, all other ways are not much or not at all worth your atencion...and thats just my apinion.
There's very little you can do really, as stated above, and this is probably why there's no guide.
* Install an AOSP Based Custom ROM (Openfire or CM)
* OC your CPU
* Have as less background apps running as possible.
Not much else you can do.
As for using the SD Card as RAM, I am pretty sure its not possible. Besides, logically, the SD Card is way slower than Flash RAM, so, using it as a RAM device will actually cause the phone to slow down and lag.
thanks guys... been a big help.
Also one last thing..
i hear that there are different classes of sd card.. What card should i be looking at to upgrade to as i have a standard 2GB SD and wanted to know a little more about it ... any ideas please would be great
A Class 4 card should suffice. Anything above that doesn't give majorly noticeable results on the Wildfire.

How to add more ram to our tiny devices(Through SD card;) )

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=683123
How to use Swap space on SD to increase ram on our devices so we can run more demanding apps.
swap is possible only with custom kernel, so it will not work for us
I believe that doixanh proved more than enough that custom kernel is not needed for any kernel modifications Still, we would need a module.
but i don't think that he should make swap module it will be better if he will finish this
Well, it's up to him what he wishes to develop
IMO swap is useless for Android. It has its own memory management already.
And it would certainly take a high class sd card, AND it would be harmful for it So next time we should just buy a phone with bigger RAM memory

So, how can we increase the memory through SD, my finding isn't good ? If not, how to do it the right way?XD

I don't really care about my SD card's health XD i just want more ram XD
But what do you need slow RAM for? RAM is very dynamic and since we already use app2sd it could even slow your device down instead of enhancing performance...
EDIT: Well, maybe it would be faster if you have a class 10 card...
Yeah SD is slow and putting swap there will be incredibly slow.

Yes, but i want this because you know that there are some applications that won't run on X8 because of it's low ram...so, i dont care about about speed, also, i don't use app2sd, so no slowdown, I am using Class 4 card
Yeah I know. Just my opinion

So, is there a way of using ram just for the ram consuming apps, to make X8 able to at least run them? (You already released an SD card speed fix, so it should go a bit faster...Can you help me, cuz i really like running RAM hungry apps and i don't have enough ram :|
No I don't know about that. Haven't tried swap thingies yet
for example, there are games, like dungeon defenders that requires 256 MB of RAM at the runtime (it's the requirement of unreal enginge 3 i belive). some guys have managed to run the game on LG swift, which is pretty much the same device as x8 when it comes to hardware. maybe it's not running too fast (although i saw some video where it was even faster than on some more powerful devices), and it's not quite playable, but some people might still enjoy it. and without SWAP, it's impossible; and it's just a one example.

Thanks for supporting my ideea XD We really need Swap for Ram Hungry apps
Yes. great. ideA. but... is posible?
The app that does this on market requires custom kernel so might not be possible atm

ZTE Blade v880 256MB RAM, tried CM7.1.0 and its slow as hell. Recomendations?

Hi, I have ZTE Blade v880 256MB RAM, tried CM7.1.0 and its slow as hell. Recomendations? I have clockwork mod installed so I can try other roms (its gen2).
Any ROM designed for such little ram? CyanogenMod 7.1.0 lags terribly, its unusable, it almost never has ram free.
Thanks in advance for any help.
EDIT: ITS A CHINESE UNICOM PHONE.
You could try my CM7 kang: http://kan.gd/1h7f
CM7 was written & tested for the European 512mb ram version of the phone, that doesn't run out of ram so badly. My kanged version has a few tweaks to the kernel to make it run faster.
You could try enabling swap space by formatting your sd card in clockworkmod, might as well create a ext partition too. 512mb ext & 128mb swap should be ok. That'll let your phone use the sd card as virtual memory. You could also try compcache.
There are a few other settings to make it a bit faster too, like overclocking. Disable surface dithering for faster graphics. Look in CyanogenMod settings.
You could also try GSF, it's based on a zte 2.3.5 with few customisations, it might use a bit less ram than CM7.

Thanks, will try to test to create a ext partition and swap and compchache. I think that any rom designed to run on 512mb ram will run ultra slow for 256mb cellphones. Would be nice to have a really clean rom (CM7.1.0 is filled with stuff I dont use).
I too have a 256mb blade and cm7.1 is working fine. Try disabling surface dithering and enabling 16bit transparency. Also overclock to 710 MHz ( standard for blade. However mine is 748 MHz and stable)
It should work fine after this. Is it always slow, or just at boot?

One more question:
I think I have some problems on recieving sms and calls. Sometimes I dont get sms/calls from my friends despite being sent on their phones. What could it be? Does ClockworkMod tinker with this things? I called the Service Company and they said there is nothing wrong with the telephone or the number.

No clockwork doesn't change these. Its a gingerbread thing. Go to settings/cm settings/performance/lock messaging app in memory. Enable it. Also try these settings
10% compcache
JIT disabled
Dithering enabled
Allow purging of assets
Lock messaging in memory
Heap size 32
Hit THANKS if helpful

No, it's a totally different phone.
None of the roms here will work on a CDMA N880, only the GSM China Unicom V880 & European/Indian/Russian GSM ZTE Blades.
Hey... had the same Problems with the CM. I flashed the ZTE Elite Rom (you can get it in the forums).
Now its working like a charm =)
You can try Moldovan Mile High Mountain Pie RLS9(MMHMP)
its a gaming rom for blade(means very fast) and works without any lags on my blade(168 mb total ram)

I guess its okay to use swap. Swap increases your ram and so you can preform better multitasks.
I think the con is that the phone gets slow if your SD card is not good. But i am really not sure on this one

SWAP expands your RAM, so when you have it, you can open more apps than than you could without it.
If You're not trying to run many RAM-eating apps at the same time, you're only wasting your SD space.
I close every app i don't need, so SWAP i useless for me. Also i'm using Dorimanx ROM, which when SWAP is enabled has no built in task manager. If it wasnt like that, i would probably have it, just in case.
About slowing phone down: SWAP will never work as fast as RAM, since it has slower access time than native RAM. It's just to keep everything going even if you ran out of RAM, maybe a little slower, but still.

ROEHSOFT RAM Expander (SWAP)

Does this work as good as it says?

There are some benefits to SWAP yes, however using your MicroSD as RAM is far far slower than using actual RAM - so some things can play a little badly with it.
It also isn't a healthy thing to use when it comes to prolonging the lifespan of your MicroSD card as its using all those writes at an almost constant rate.
That being said though, enabling a SWAP partition on your MicroSD card is a somewhat easy thing to do and there are loads of other apps that will do this for free for you. I would not pay for this.
me tried in all roms me use my memory class 10 and good swap for me

So what your saying is it would let me have more multitasking but at the same time it would be slower.
First here is how to do that for free.

And yes I use that method, for me my Neo2Play gained some speed, less lags. But there is but, best is when used with fast card. I have 32GB class 10, on my old class 2 it wasn't so impressive.
Works great for me with 1105 MB swap RAM on Atomic GB 7.0.(2.3.7) Especially when using it with RAM Manager Pro on Hard Multitasking setting.
