I am trying to make a hierarchy of the terms relating to the memory on the HTC Evo Shift.
The phone itself being at the top, then the various memory storage components on the motherboard, then the software on each on. The software would be listed in the order at which it is loaded. Can anyone help with this?
Is there more than one flash/ROM memory chip?
Or is everything on the same chip?
Where is the baseband located?
What about the OS and kernel?
What about the bootloader? 1st and 2nd stage?
What about information such as: MEID, SID, MIN, MDN, etc?
What about the PRL?
What about the SPL?
What about the radio firmware?
What about the Advanced Mobile Subscriber Software (AMSS)?
What about the boot image?
What about the recovery partition?
What about the ....
etc..
I basically want a better understanding of the memory on my phone and where it is located. I also would like to know the technical names of the parts of memory. For example what is the name of the first stage boot-loader? x-loader?
Second stage? U-Boot?
What is HBOOT?
Any help is appreciated.
Must admit I'm sorta curious in a nerdy kinda way

Thanks for your time and help. I have tried to research this before posting.
the problem:
My girlfriend's HTC Glacier has the bad emmc chip. It started with the random restarts earlier this week. It has been getting more and more sluggish over time. On the way home today, it lost all network connectivity, even after a restart, then pulling battery, sim, and sd, replacing then restarting.
What has been done to the phone so far:
It was unstable several months ago at which time I permarooted it, unlocked it, and flashed the rooted gingerbread update from the permaroot post here on xda. ( we didn't try to rdma it because it was an ebay purchase and already past manufacturer warranty) I did not flash the engineering bootloader (wish I had and that will probably be one of my first steps now). It has cwm flashed and a backup of the rom. It is turned off now while deciding how to proceed. Other than that, It has had no custom roms flashed or anything else of the sort.
What I am hoping is possible:
I have a Samsung 16GB class 10 (rated up to 23 MB/s read and 21 MB/s write). I am wondering if it is possible to create a bootable sd and run cm7 (for example) like the nook color.
Is this possible? Would it require a custom kernel to bypass the emmc and use the sd card as the rom instead?
Any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated. I am hoping to help my girlfriend nurse this phone to the end of her contract. Is it worth the effort or is it a lost cause?
if you can still boot into the android system... go to market and find Bootmanager.. it's $2.99 but wayy worth it.
but also, read my guide here:

hope it helps.

Thanks, that is one of the threads that I hadn't gotten to yet, but was already open in a tab. I will post an update. I am curious about the possibility of running roms from the sd card.

Do you think that multibooting would be a workaround for the failing emmc? I will be trying it out.
I am going to follow saranhai's guide and try to stabilize the phone as much as possible first.
I had read that flashing the engineering bootloader is important, would you say that that should be my priority?

i don't think any software related thing can be a workaround for the failed eMMC chip...
once the chip is dead, it's dead. you can't write anything to it. you can't flash ROMs, you can't wipe anything, you can't even boot the device up. if the bootloader is showing Fail-PU when you're trying to restore back, then sorry friend, but it's gone...
as we see it now, nothing besides replacing the hardware itself will fix it.
yes, having the Engineering bootloader is a definite must, that's how you flash radios and such.
As an update, amidst nonstop FC's, I got the engineering bootloader pushed to the phone and installed.
I wiped the cache and dalvic then restored to a cwm recovery. It seems stable so far, but only time will tell.
As soon as I get a chance, I will be installing boot manager and setting it up to boot from the sd. I am glad to get the phone somewhat stable before trying though. I hope that it will take the strain off the emmc and let us keep it going through the end of contract.
Thank you for your help!

I am trying to get my bost flash from one evo with a cracked screen to an new one that I have currently on metro. Is there an easy way to just transfer all flash needed data at once or you still have to use the cdma manager, qpst, etc. Thank to all....
Yes you need to use some of those programs to flash the new evo. Just Google to find them if you don't already.
FYI -You might not want to double post and make a new thread to ask the same question anymore or the mods might get you!

I have read all of the tutorials and have most of the software but I was wondering if there's a way to just simply plug 1 into the other if they're both flashed and transfer all of the data flashed including the donor info from 1 phone to the other. Thanks for the assistance...

Not that I have heard of, but I may be wrong! As far as I know, you need to manually enter that data using QPST or DFS
I am very experienced with my Samsung Droid Charge for Verizon, and I am trying to help my friend with his mytouch 4g. Basically I don't know how to do anything on a HTC phone. On Samsung we have a Windows program called ODIN that can flash anything to the phone (stock software, CWM, kernels, ROMs, radios, backup/restore, repartition). Most of the above we also do with CWM, which we get into by holding volume down, home, and power. Are there equivalents for all this on HTC?
Also, are there any fully working AOSP (preferably ICS or JB) ROMs? Sense would be fine just to get the bloat off. Does S-on or S-off make a difference? That is kind of confusing to me. Note that I would want a generally finished ROM that you can just flash once and not look at again.

knock yourself out.
btw, yes, for HTC Devices, S-Off (basically unlocked bootloader) is required for root access and ROM/mods flashing.

Thanks. Also how easy is it to hard brick this phone? The Charge is nearly impossible, with the only reports of hard bricks unplugging the cable when flashing something in ODIN, or a corruption when changing file systems on the internal memory.

I tried really hard to brick this phone to show my friend its safe to root. No luck lol
Though I did have the good eMMc. Some mt4g's shipped with a bad eMMC which sometimes causes partitions to get corrupt and not Mount correctly therefore rendering the device useless.
Look up failed pu errors on this forum, also there is a tutorial to determine which eMMc your device has.

Yes check your emmc chip to see which one the phone has 50% of the people here will tell you it doesn't matter if u have the good or bad one but its always good to check.
Yes its hard to brick this phone unless u flash a wrong radio because I've flashed from different devices kernels and my phone is still alive..
somehow... but always ALWAYS have a NANDROID just in case and follow the guide Saranhai posted...
Like every ICS / JB ROMs theirs not 1 that stands out to be Perfect they all have their bugs since this device only got Gingerbread but test them for yourself and see which one works the best for your friend and his daily uses of the phone.

Yeah i figured about ICS/JB. We have a cm9 and cm10 ROM with like half the hardware working and then the dev got stuck. What would you say is the best ROM to flash just once and be done with it? I would probably root, tibu, nandroid, and flash the ROM then restore apps.

I think differently. I've never known and don't plan on looking up the emmc on my phone. If I ever had a doubt or fear about anything I did on this device, I probably wouldn't be developing at all. I'd have to say it doesn't matter because at the end of the day no matter what chip you have it should be YOU who decides what you do with your device. Not the other way around.

Hi fellow members,
I recently bought a HD2 as it is a beast. However i wan to install the Hyper droid rom or any other android rom. But i don't know whether the following information makes a difference. In the listing it said
The device has a HTC unlocked bootloader (S-OFF) as it was a developer device provided by HTC.
Do i install the rom as normal using the newbie guide or do i have do some other stuff.
Thanks
Lucky you
AFAIK, the fact that your phone is S-off means that there is no need to flash HSPL to unlock the bootloader, it is unlocked. So you should be able to flash an android rom.
But I have not heard of a phone like yours on this site. It may be unique.
Before doing anything at all to your nand, i would suggest using an sd rom, or NativeSD for now for android, until someone else, with more knowledge than me, can find out whether your bootloader is useful for the HD2 community.
Meanwhile, can you provide more info- What OS is installed now? Is it EU or TMOUS (512 or 1024Mb nand)? What is your sdcard size/type (useful to know for NativeSD)? Radio version?
Thanks

Flash size is 512Mb
Ram: 448mb
data bus: 32 bits
OS version: 5.2.21869 (21869.5.0.82)
Radio: 2.05.51.05_2
I have a spare 2gb sd card lying around. which guide do you recommend me following
Actually the phone isn't unique, see here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1501745, but is rare.
I got confused with the S-off description.

So can I install the rom as normal using the guides with MAGDLR via NAND.
Or do you recommend me using a SD card.
Thanks for your quick reply.
I think before you du anything to this device you sould try to dump the SPL, because this SPL could be the Key to make our HD2 to a completly native Android Device and mayby it would be a big loss for the HD2 community if you lose this SPL by a mistake...

Actually, I PMed the OP of this thread, and several others who had the same spl on their phones and had posted on the forum, but to no avail. No-one replied
But fortunately, I think @symbuzzer has found the spl in an old WM6.5 rom, since he posted a picture of his phone with "security unlocked" in another place.
But he still couldn't flash unsinged radios or did I overlook something?
Btw I have 3 semi working HD2 boards if there is something risky I would test it because its not a big loss if i brick one oft this semi working boards

Thanks, that could be helpful, let's see what symbuzzer says.
But it would still hurt to brick obe of these, but i think thats would be it worth
If someobe told me hiw to decompile and recompile spls I would try things by myself...

EDIT: I want to try this WM ROM with S-OFF SPL. Can I simply flash this ROM from SD with HSPL 2.08, because I read about problem with flashing from SD with HSPL 2.08... I have the EU HD2
EDIT2: ok I donĀ“t think that i can flash it because the filename says TMOUS and the Baseband thats in this ROM would brick my EU Model: http://d-h.st/ox8
EDIT3: Seems like Cotulla hast a SPL-Emulator: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=611433 maybe he can give it to use, that would be a better solution instead of bricking my boards
Please help a noob out
How do you find the right version for my phone?
Right now my phone is running N9005XXUGBOK4 for the Modem and Bootloader.
Wanted to try the N9005XXUGPOK2 from here (https://idlekernel.com/flash-tools/firmware/hlte_SM-N9005XX/) but not sure how to find the newest version.
I'm still trying to get my head around the naming conventions and what they mean, and then stuff like this just makes me more confused. http://forum.xda-developers.com/gala...modem-t3390176
I thought everything was in alphabetical order for the dates of when it was made or something.
Any help much appreciated, not sure where else to look.
