Hey guys,
So today the power button on my nexus s 19020A randomly stopped working. Whether i am in recovery, bootloader, or the os, the power button refuses to work. In addition, the volume buttons work fine in recovery and os but they don't work in bootloader. I have a nexus s 19020a with Brickmaster's MIUI. I have clockworkmod touch recovery as well. Please help me! is this a hardware of software issue?
Although I have not experienced it, from what I have read the ns4g has a wonky power button to begin with. There have been numerous threads here discussing the delicacy of said button. Good news you have touch recovery. Aokp will let you wake your phone with volume buttons. And I believe that the search button will select in recovery not touch based

well i have a nexus s 3g so thats not it. and this phone is less than a year old so im kind of frustrated if the power button is already broken. I know i can use volume buttons to unlock it but i shouldn't have to.
happened same thing to me about 2 weeks ago. I have the I9023 and the power button randomly stopped working, and the volume buttons didnt work in fastboot! I looked over and over and i couldnt find a solution. I finally sent it to Samsung and they rapared it for free.
I dont think you'll be able to fix it without having the power button working.
Good luck tho. And report back if you get it to work

i just responded in that thread, read what i wrote about what i do in the bootloader to get it to work http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=22692987&postcount=3
these are all viable work arounds but that doesnt change the fact that it should not happen. the phone is less than a year old for me! i hope best buy or samsung will replace it or fix the issue for mine.

Dude this is crazy, this just happened to me too!
I can't use volume buttons in fastboot and I can't restore to stock for some reason because my phone isn't recognized in fastboot...I think it has something to do with the volume buttons issue. What can I do to get it to look like stock so I can give it back to the store for repair?
im gonna flash back a stock rom from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1063664 and then use fastboot to relock my bootloader. where did you buy yours from?

Hi everybody,
This is my first post here and I seriously hope someone can help me.
I unlocked my phone and was attempting to root it and flash Cyanogen's MOD. I flashed Armon_RA's recovery image into recovery partition using fastboot, but when I try to access it I'm getting an image of an android with a warning sign, which I can't post yet because I'm a newbie and mod's have to check my account... Once there the only thing I can do is remove the battery.
I've downloaded Armon_RA's img twice and from different sources and the same thing happens.
In terms of what I did, I tried to follow a step-by-step guide at androidandme.com, combined with Cyanogen's official Wiki.
I appreciate any kind of help,
Thanks!
BTW I'm on Ubuntu 9.10, in case it helps.
Took me like 4 times to flash the recovery before I got the care bear screen. Just keep flashing!
I just got it working right now and was about to post it had been fixed.
Thanks anyway!
Sorry for undigging this thread, but this thread is the first one which shows up when I searched for "android recovery warning".
I have spent the entire day trying to fix my Nexus One's recovery (I got stuck on the screen with a warning sign as well), with no success. Trust me, I tried (almost) everything possible to flash a new recovery/restore stock recovery.
What did work, though, was running fastboot flash recovery recovery.img 5 times in a row (remember to boot your phone in fastboot mode before sending these commands). That did the trick, and now I'm able to boot in recovery mode (Clockworkmod, by the way).
Thanks!

So how can I do a hard reset from this stock recovery when there's no menu commands, how do you use the stock recovery?
I have an unrooted S On nexus one that I need to hard reset because it boot loops for some reason, but didn't want to have to root it.

Push the power button and volume up buttons at the same time
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA Premium App
Two buttons together ...
It is a common misconception that you have to push two buttons at the same time to activate some features. Trying to push them at exactly the same time is hit and miss and causes people to have issues.
In every case the combination is always hold one button down and then click the other button once ... much easier than clicking both together.
In this case I believe the combo is hold down power and then click Volume-Up once. (I may have it reversed).

It most likely is reversed. At least when you want to access the bootloader you want to hold down the volume down button (or maybe it is either volume button) and then turn on the phone. And with fastboot, you hold down the trackball as you turn on the phone.
I believe the volume up and powerbutton at the same was to "ok" the phone to apply an update.zip that was stored on the card (I remember doing that when I was running the Froyo build leaks from google).

OzCDN is correct, it is: hold down the power button and press volume up (the reverse does not work), but pushing them both together still works
I'm not sure what happened to my friends phone but apparently it just resetted out of no where and is stuck in fastboot i think i forget which one... The one with less option.
the keys don't work.i can't click on any options with power nor move with arrow keys.
I thought I'll just load up the pd15img and it'll be good. But nope screen is stuck at fastboot without any changes.
It is s-off but 86 bootloader idk why it's not 85 but whatever.
I think it might be bricked. I'm going to see if adb detects it later tonight. If it can are there any ways to fix it?

hm well, sounds like the volume buttons are broken, that's why it always reboots into the bootloader, the phone thinks that the volume down button is pressed in. what if you connected it to computer and type?
Code:
fastboot reboot

Oh wow, noticed that my reply didn't go through.
anyways quick update. Fixed it. it wasn't the volume button. volume button would lead to hboot i think. this went straight to fastboot. I imagine it has something to do with his back button (was working, stopped working when this happened, i fixed it somehow idk)
but anyways for future reference if you get stuck at fastboot and you can't move it
Click HOME, this enables your keys
go to recovery and flash a rom.
oh i wanted to add, for some reason, his phone was like wiped clean. no os or rom. so i had to flash him a new one.

glad you fixed it
and thanks for the tip
thanks, but the home button do not enable the buttons for me
This can be caused by a stuck VolumeDown button, and in this case the Home button won't help.
Hi,
I got the same problem with my HTC Desire Z, when I turn it on, it run on fastboot and no keys respond so I'm unable to boot the phone.
If I turn it on with Vol down button hold, the phone boot on the Hboot screen and the keys don't work on this screen too...
Unfortunately, this happen yesterday night... and since this yesterday morning, the home button of my device broke down... It sounds like I'm f**ked...
Is there a way to pass througt fastboot by using the adb ? (I'm not sure my device will be recognized byt adb on fastboot mode...)
Thanks

I've used the search function by looking for no keys responding on fastboot screen and that bring me here, in this case, nevermind the device, problem is the same.
It should be a stuck button, but I can access to fastboot or hboot depending on pressing the Vol Down button or not. Maybe the problem come from the not working center button of the Desire Z, I'll try it.

Hello,
For the past week, I've been sifting through the forums looking for a solution to my problem. I have tried the Google Nexus Toolkit and others without success.
Last week, I was running a backup with CW and I MUST have pressed a button by accident. My Nexus 7 has been in the Google Lock screen and will not boot into anything. Power and volume etc... Just goes back to this screen. (see the enclosure).
I was rooted and havent flashed anything to it. I even tried stock cables and others.
Any help would be appreciated!!
Thanks in Advance,
Marty
You can't boot into the bootloader? When you can see that google lock screen, hold the power and volume down buttons. The screen should turn off, continue holding them. And when it turns back on, it should be in the bootloader, and you can let go of the buttons. From there the Nexus 7 Toolkit should work, the fastboot commands at least. Try reflashing a recovery if you can't get back into it, and flashing a rom, stock or otherwise.
Solved Thank You

I guess you don't need to boot into recovery to root, you simply need to boot into bootloader
If there's the "no command" message, press power and volume up (or down?) to bypass that

I have same problem with myt Nexus 7 except that mine is rooted (with Nexus 7 Toolkit v1.5). Recovery mode has the dreaded "No Command" message and no combination of button presses will take it past that screen - except into normal reboot.
I've got the same no command message and no combination of buttons with the power & volume rocker will get me out of it. looking for suggestions.

Motochopper exploit has been out and about for a while, although your mileage may vary. KhoC, it's generally better practice to go through fastboot first. Reboot by holding power and both volume buttons (up and down). You should get to a black screen with an android in the center, and a tab at the top that will say things like Reboot bootloader, Recovery, Power Off, and other such things. Scroll with the volume buttons, select with power.

Care to tell us what combinations you've tried? Saying that none of them work is generally unhelpful, since it's possible you're just forgetting one/slightly malforming the correct sequence.

Yea sorry. I've tried power + volume up, power + volume down & power + both volume up/down at both powering it it on and while the device is actually on. while the device is on, if I press power + volume up, all it does is dim/brighten the screen. power + volume down does nothing. When I'm pressing the buttons, I'm holding them down, which will eventually reboot the device. I get the Google logo and the unlocked padlock, then the android laying down with no command below it.
Edit: I started my own thread this morning about it titled "Need help recovering my Nexus 7" a few posts down so not to hijack this one that has a little more info as well.

Hi all,
I hope I am posting in the correct place.
I got my screen fixed by a guy and he returned the phone with the volume buttons not working.
He told me to do a factory reset but I forgot I had a custom Rom installed(extrestolite) so after factory reset the phone is stuck on android screen and I can't use the volume button to boot into recovery. When I connect the phone to my laptop it doesn't show up as an adb device because its not fully booting I presume. So I can't adb shell into recovery either. Do I have any other options here or has my stupidity and this guys incompetent work doomed my phone? Thanks guys.
Did the volume keys work before the screen repair?
If yes, I'd open the phone again and see if it is a simple fix

Yes the functionality of the phone was perfect before the screen fix. I went to a shop and the guy said the volume buttons are soldered to the motherboard(replacing or reconnecting the buttons was my first thought) is this true?
Can you boot into download mode and flash the stock rom with the microSD hack?
