There's a github page for it. Why don't you download it directly from the source?
OK, I'm sorry, but WHAT is taco root? I've been root since mid 2010, and reading and playing heavily, and have never even heard of, or seen in print, 'taco root'. Yes, I'll Google it, but would love to hear what anyone here has to say about it.
Thanks.

http://rootzwiki.com/index.php?/topic/13713-TacoRoot---HTC-Universal-Root-Exploit-12-30-2011
It's a root exploit that works with most HTC devices, apparently. In fact, I recently used it to temp root my 2.18 HBOOT EVO without having to first unlock it via the HTC method. Then I downgraded the misc partition, rolled back to Froyo and re-rooted with unrEVOked. So it's an alternative method to root the latest HBOOT that came with the latest OTA.
Thank you much, good sir

No problem. In fact, I don't see why EVO 3D users with the "dreaded" HBOOT 1.5 can't use Tacoroot to temp root their device, and then downgrade the main version by flashing the misc partition. Then they should be able to downgrade to an older HBOOT that's rootable with Revolutionary.
Maybe I should check over there and see if anyone's tried it.

While Samsung Captivate owners are grabbing their GPS fix, HTC EVO 4G owners might want to check their handsets for an update as well. Sprint is pushing out a new update (3.29.651.5) today which should address some issue that EVO users have been complaining about for a while.
The minor update fixes the calendar editing and multiple Gmail account sync problems. I have not been able to download the new firmware update yet, but if you want to manually check for the update, follow the steps below. As usual, Sprint is being pretty quiet about the update, so we have no indication as to how fast it will be rolling out to all HTC EVO 4G users.
Manually check for System Update
From the home screen, press Menu
Select Settings
Scroll down and select System updates

Will update potentially eliminate Unrevoked 3.21 Root?
I've not heard a decisive answer on this one. But is it safe to assume that a Sprint update will reverse my EVO's rooting via Unrevoked 3.21 or possibly cause problems with the device?
Not firmware update....HTC software update
Wow, there is an update coming out today. Would have never known if it wasn't for all the other posts about this in the correct section......

It'll probably be in your sdcard download or downloads folder. Then usb it or email it to a pc (generic sense) then post it. I haven't tried to load attachments from the evo to the forum, though that would also be a method. You may even be able to use "share"..

I have rooted 17 G2's using unforgivens tutorial with visionary method with no issues. Last time i did this was a little over a month ago. We(business) upgraded, the other day, a bunch of our lines to G2's. I went to use this method like normal and can not get S-OFF. I tried two others thinking that there was something up with the first one. Could t-mobile be implementing something to block this on the newly distributed devices? I have a few more and will try with them tomorrow. Hopfully I'm wrong but has anyone else notice anything like this?

Unless you want to revert to S-ON and everything back to stock, which is a pain in the behind.
You can't use visionary with the latest roms/radios.
You need to downgrade first:

The newer ROMs which are not (yet) rootable are versions 1.72 and above, and have only applied to the Desire Z (as far as the shipped ROM). The only existing T-Mobile G2 ROMs are 1.12 and 1.19 (both rootable using the "old" methods). To this point, there has not been any G2's which are not rootable due to security. So if in fact the new G2's are not rootable by design, it would seem that a new ROM was snuck in under the radar, or some other security implemented on these new units.

I agree. I wouldn't want to deal with having to upgrade that many phones for people. I actually wouldn't give someone a rooted phone that couldn't root it themselves! On that note maybe this guy works for a software company or something and everyone knows what up? I dunno but I don't even let the guys at my work touch my phone.

I really appreciate the responses guys as I have been slammed lately and not able to keep up in the know. To clarify, the main reason for root is battery life and cache cleaner ng(auto cleaning). Also having a backup is great in case they hose it up. We use an older stable version of virtuous sense, which everyone likes the eye candy right.
I'm going to look into this more with all that has been said. I hope it's user error. Will post results.
Thanks again

I don't know, I always used this method many times as it says in the OP so I don't know if that's the issue here. I use this method on another G2 a couple hours ago and it worked as I said in a couple posts back. I don't know who told you you couldn't use the visionary method that unforgiven posted but they were wrong unless they know of a reason in the newer devices or something like that.

Hello everyone,
Any help you guys can give will be much appreciated.
I have a MyTouch 4G previously running Froyo, rooted and S=Off. Against better judgment, I decided to put this release of Gingerbread 2.3.4 on it:
PD15IMG_Glacier_Gingerbread_S_TMOUS_2.19.531.1_Radio_12.58.60.25_26.11.04.03_M_release_200756_signed.zip
Though everything seems to work fine, I lost root. Contrary to most other accounts from other people who flashed the same file, S=Off remained on my phone.
I would really like to get root back so I can use some of my apps again.
Visionary stops at a black screen.
Gingerbreak runs forever with no success.
What other means can I use to get root back or am I SOL for now until someone figures out how to root 2.3.4 on the MT4G?
Thanks again.

lOOK AT WOLF26915's post use the G2 instructions to temp root using the fre3vo exploit in adb then change your version number to 1.17.531.2, then your bootloader will allow you to use the 2.2.1 PD15IMG update to get back to stock and root.

That was 20 years ago. And yet, even then, when I wanted to know something; I searched and searched and searched, and searched again. Then I read and read and re-read over and over and over again. And after all that if I still didn't know then I would ask. But I would also ask in a proficient manner.
Too many young kids jumping in on the Android bandwagon and wanting to root and flash Rom's right out of the box without learning first.
I stand by my first statement.
If you had Radio S-OFF, you should be able to flash an unsigned PD15IMG.zip even though you lost root.

Hello, yes, first post!
I am trying to root HTC Mytouch 4G.
I have adb and fastboot and am working through Mac OS terminal. That has worked great!
I was using this guide for gfree tem root and gfree perm root. http://simply-android.com/discussion/960/guide-how-to-permroot-g2-with-g-free-safest-method/p1 - originally starting here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=834228, but wanting to use Gfree instead of vision for the permanent root part.
I pushed all the Gfree temp files to the sd card (su, superuser.apk etc) and ran the Terminal Emulator prompts to attain temporary root. I got the desired "forked #### childs" message - but when I reset term, the terminal just went to a blank terminal window - the guide says that Terminal will exit. Finally, after I pressed some keys it force closed. After that I could not re open Terminal Emulator at all. The system also seemed bogged down at this point, everything was lagging until I rebooted. Obviously I was unable to continue with the Gfree perm prompts - never having gotten a root prompt in Terminal Emulator, as I could not get it to reopen.
I retried this after several reboots (maybe 10 times). I always got through the "rage" prompts just fine to the "forked #### childs" message.
I hope that someone may know what is wrong with Terminal Emulator or why it would not reset and give me the root "#"prompt to continue with permanent root.
Thanks in advance - trying to get 10 posts to ask the actual developer - but even then the thread is 3 years old.

The visionary method works of you just typed visionary.apk into Google you would get it........but if you have a bad emmc when it reaches the part to get s off root.sh won't work if u follow the guide on the unlockr.com u will be ok. You would just need to get visionary from else where and when it reaches the part to get permroot and u have to use the terminal instead of the instructions in the guud go down to the comments and get the file that the guy said worked for him and follow those instructions and u will get s off at which point you may go back to the unlocked to continue to get a custom recovery and ROM.............if your phone starts behaving strange beware the bad emmc chips and take precautions right away

I know that this mytouch has the emmc that is considered to be bad. Should I forget about rooting all together?

Cool. I had seen some others who just go with it. This mt4g has been super stable, I really don't know what symptoms to look for with a failing chip.
I did just download holo and it runs well and feels modified, much more usable than sense.
I guess I just want to mod so the annoying limitations are gone.
Thanks for the reassurance.

Ooh wow... Ok. For starters, you're going to have to downgrade. Here are some helpful links for you.
Visionary: http://www.modaco.com/topic/330718-visionary-download-link/ it's at the bottom of the thread.
Downgrade guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1178912
Root with gfree: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=858996
Wish I could help more, but I'm heading out the door. Good luck!

Agreed. I too have this bad chip, and I have flashed several roms, kernels, and radios without a problem.
Please be advised, OP, you MUST downgrade to Froyo then root using the G-FREE. You are having the EXACT same problems I had when I first tried it a long time ago. Nothing else works, period. Trust me on this. It will save you hours of aggravation.
If you don't want to downgrade to Froyo then forget about it.

Awesome, I appreciate it. I haven't addressed this because I've been playing with my phone and lost the ich to work on it. This is my wife's 4G and the more I use it the more I think it is a great phone -size, sleekness, screen and speed are all really nice. Too bad they don't start allowing people to add RAM to phones. (Unless it is possible and I just don't know it) That could keep older "cult" phones in play longer, much like Custom roms, but from a hardware standpoint. Anyway...
Ps - what roms have you had three best experience with for the mytouch?

I am currently on Dark Unicorn v2.5 and it's insane amazing. Minus the lack of 720p recording, it's bomb-diggity! :victory:
If I would have to pick a best experience, I would say Stock 2.3.4 because everything works. Ha ha
Others:
Android Revolution HD
CM7.2
Yeah Dark Unicorn, and Synthetic's AOSPX. Pac-man and venom touch have good tweaks for their rom though .

Interesting. Do you get markedly better performance with dark unicorn, due to the deoxing and kernal?
Honestly, debloating is a big factor in why I root.
