[Guide]CLEAN installation of ROMS - XPERIA X8 General

this also applies in restoring a back-up
hi guys, im a new member here on XDA, but i have been watching this forum since November..i just realized that i have to register to help others..anyways..
this is my short guide to have a clean installation of ROMS
*Xrecovery*
>turn-off phone
>press the back button many times if you see the "sony ericcson"
>DO "Factory reset(full wipe)"
>go to "partition tools" and do "format system" and then go back to main menu
>go to "advance options" and do "wipe dalvik cache" and go back to main menu
>now you can flash your favorite ROM
>after installation go to "advanced options" and do "wipe battery stats"
>reboot phone..DONE
*CWM*
>turn-off phone
>touch the screen many times if you see the "sony ericcson"
>DO "wipe data/Factory reset"
>go to "mounts and storage" and do "format system" and then go back to main menu
>go to "advance" and do "wipe dalvik cache" and go back to main menu
>now you can flash your favorite ROM
>after installation go again to "advanced" and do "wipe battery stats"
>reboot phone..DONE
i made this guide because i tested a lot of ROMS and every time i do this, my phone is much faster than anyone else here on XDA..as a proof, i attached my antutu score..
my score is 1927b @600mhz using FroyoProv2.4

Question From Newbie..
Is it okay to wipe battery stats although my phone battery not at 100%..??
Sorry for my english..

Yes its fine..its a way to have a clean install..especially if you restore a back-up rom..

Nice thread mate.

A suggestion:
- In custom kernels, back button enter in CWM not touch screen.
- When you're installing a ROM, the installer do the /system format and wipe dalvik cache automatically. (at least for all ROMs that I already tested)
The AnTuTu score is because of your ROM, most of people who use FroyoPro has a high score. (but a oddly low write speed)

You should do a full wipe after installing a rom as well.

[Q] Camcorder not working on Epsy CM9

This is from one of my posts on the CM9 thread here.
I'm still having problems with video recording.
I tried making a 2:10 video just now, after a full phone wipe (factory reset) then installing this.
The camera FCd and in the gallery it says - "This Video cannot be played"
It's really annoying because I actually use my video camera, when I can..
It's not the camera app because I've used different applications and they say "Cannot access camera" after around 40s.
Defy Red Lens running latest build.
--------
Does anyone know why this happens? Or have any solution to it.
I have enabled full HWA (in the most recent update).
Process when installing the ROM:
Wipe data/factory reset
Wipe cache/dalvik
Install the rom (5 july from here)
Install Proximity Sensor Disable (this disables screen turning off when a call is made, for one thing).
Install Pottkopp's AIO Aroma installer for CM9 (Apex + rest don't change)
Wipe cache/dalvik
Reboot
Just incase I'm doing anything I shouldn't
Anyone know anything?
Try going to Apps and find Camera app.
Select Clear data from there.
Has helped me sometimes.
AROMA-Installer could also be the problem.
When installing new rom just:
Wipe cache partition or when big changes or everything goes wrong Wipe data/factory reset
Wipe Davik Cache
Install Rom
Reboot
There are just some options in Settings to disable screen rotating.

Edit: Sober now.. fixing this up lol.
OK, I'll try skipping the AROMA installer next time I install.
Thank you! It must have been the Aroma.. I just tried a minute video and it worked!
I'll try a 5 minute one just in case, and see if that saves

[Q] Flashed latest CyanogenMod build, yet everything was still there

Okay, so here's a quick recent ROM history of my G2 (VS980).
I was on SlimKat for a little while, then switched to build 2014/07/09 of CyanogenMod, and just now I updated CM to build 2014/07/16.
So I backed up my ROM and apps and whatnot in TWRP, then did the default wipe, then flashed the latest CM nightly + Gapps. When I rebooted into the ROM, everything was still there. All of my apps were still there. My processor settings were still there. My lockscreen was still there. It was as if I never wiped then flashed a new ROM.
I went into the settings and it says that it's still on build 2014/07/09.
So can somebody tell me what's going on?
(Here's a picture of TWRP after I flashed the ROM + Gapps. Sorry for the crappy quality. I had to take it with my 3DS camera, since that's the only other camera I had lying around.)
(TWRP version 2.6.3.3)

Check in twrp under advanced options (i think) and make sure "simulate operations to test theming" or some thing very close to that is not checked.

Alright, I'll try that. I've never had to do this before though, so just a bit confused. What does it even do anyways?
It basically runs commands with out actually changing anything so people who theme twrp can make sure the theme works 100%. I've checked it by mistake more than once when setting up recovery.
*Edit its actually under "settings". Its the last box on the list, on 2.7.0.0 anyway. I checked it just to test and get the same message as you. I hope this fixes the problem.

I found it in v2.6.3.3, so it's all good. Thanks for the help, and I'll see if this fixes my problem.
EDIT: It did.

Factory reset I've read fixes it. Of course you will lose everything.

That's not true, a factory reset wipes /data, so all app data and settings are lost, but the internal storage /sdcard remains intact.
But of course a backup before doing such things is always a good idea.

Uh, no.
The only way to fix the problem is to recreate the entire filesystem, which completely obliterates the old filesystem. What you are thinking of is the behavior of the "factory reset" procedure of CUSTOM recoveries such as TWRP or CWM which behave the way you describe: they remove all files except those in /data/media (the /SDcard is at /data/media/0 for the first user), but otherwise leave the filesystem intact ... and therefore the total size available.
The "factory reset" procedure of the STOCK recovery apparently does re-initialize the ext4 filesystem. So if you are having the "6 GB problem", it is the STOCK recovery's "factory reset" procedure that you want.
But "make a backup" is always good advise, so do that first.

Oh, okay, I learned something again :embarrassed:. I've never used stock recovery, hadn't expected that there's such a difference.
Yeah, the factory reset option fixed it for me.

Factory reset led to boot loop?

I'm on an s5 neo, rooted but using the same software it came with.
I decided to try a factory reset, as I had done a few things I can't undo, like removing mtp application, with a root app remover whose restore function doesn't work on this device.
I was also thinking, that instead of personalizing everything, and downloading everything, and then debloating, I thought I'd start fresh and then debloat first.
Thank *god*I had gotten brave enough to download and install twrp and make a backup, that back up is where I am coming to you from now.
I used the twrp recommended wipe for the reset, not custom wipe. Worked fine. Powered back on. All looked well until I came across a screen that said "just a sec..." For an extremely long time, like 10 minutes...
Why wouldn't it fully turn on, any ideas? As of now I can't factory reset ever again.... :/ and I'd like to be able to.
I hasn't disabled anything crazy and could reboot normally before I tried the wipe. I just don't get what went wrong?
Any help is greatly appreciated.
I cant even start off with a new rom I don't think, they're all made for the 903m or 903f versions of this phone, and I'm on the international 903w. I'm guessing some thing significant is different or else it would just be called the 903.

Well, with a bootloop you can go to recovery and recipe, then wipe data then go to advanced options in twrp and delete the Android folder in both internal and external and that should fix the issue
Recipe? I should proof read this stuff before I post it. It should have said reset, not recipe
Like, as in deleting the "system" folder, should I have wiped that too?
Or would that totally erase this current android version? And I'd be even more stuck?

No, go to advanced options, file manager, then to either storage, touch the Android folder, hit the check mark in the lower right, select delete, swipe to confirm. Do this with both storages. It's not the system folder and doesn't contain anything that isn't rebuilt upon boot. But it does contain stuff from your previous install that is known to cause bootloops when going from an Android version to another. Nothing to worry about when you delete those folders. It's been the source of tons of bootloops for me
So, the android folder, in my case, I think I've only got the one internal storage path. I'd have to double check but I'm pretty sure. I have technically for some reason a bunch of storages called "USB drive". But I think they're all empty. And I think sd card and emulated lead to the same place. Its a weird setup lol
I just took a screen shot of it, I'll add it in here

Don't do it from within the system. Do it from within twrp
Here, I made a little video. I'm a 100% amateur videographer, so go easy on me lol
