firewall problems with x8 - XPERIA X8 General

hallo, my rom is gingerDX v017+kernelv07, i am in trouble with firewall apps like droidwall and avast mobile security. For the first 3-4 times these apps work greatly but later if i turn off and turn on for a couple of times the firewall, droidwall shows the message that droidwall hasn't got the root access , and avast just shows me that is impossible to apply the rules to the firewall.
could someone please help me, i am really desperate, plese if you read this thread please give me an aswer, please help me thanks

For a start you could upgrade to GingerDX v022 (latest version available) as doixanh fixed quite a few things since v017.
As for DroidWall ... since the software relies on the "netfilter" kernel module to enforce the firewall and related ruleset - what exactly do you mean by "kernelv07"? Alfs v07?
The main problem, however, could be that DroidWall and avast are battling about the predominance of your phone. Do yourself a favor and uninstall avast - or COMPLETELY disable that piece of sh*t (I know the desktop version of avast, and that "Network Shield" is just in the way and causes tons of problems).
If DroidWall resumes to work as intended you found the culprit.
EDIT: If you really need a Virus Scanner on your phone and it was avast causing the problems, then install another Virii Scanner like the one from Trend Micro (or whatever else) that doesn't come with highly problem-causing "network shields".

i didn't install avast for the virus scanner but only for the firewall, because this one blocks also the apps when i am in roaming. Also without avast droidwall doesn't work perfectly...is strange that this app goes in conflict with superuser for the root permissions...i tried also with gingerdx v22 and i have alfs kernel v07
and i don't think netfilter is causing the problems, but the root permission...

Well, have you updated "Superuser" to the latest version and have you also checked you're running the latest su binary (update check in the Superuser app)?
Does Superuser remember you granted DroidWall su permissions?
If the answers are yes ...
Do like I suggested - disable one of the TWO firewalls you try to run in parallel; that usually doesn't work out quite well.
Oh and no, it's most likely not the iptables (aka netfilter) subsystem that is causing trouble.

SU is updated and also the binary, i tried droidwall withoud avast and the result was the same, i don't think they go in conflict. An user wrote me that if an app asks for the root permessions frequently SU stops working for that app, and after the reboot everything works fine, and if the same app asks again fot the permissions then the story repeats. Infact after the reboot droidwall works greatly, but i can't everytime reboot my phone.
Is a bug of SUPERUSER, i turned on/off a few times the firewall and after this SU stopped working...and now i don't know if it depends on custom rom and kernel
anyway thanks for the answers

CONFIRMED - it IS a bug of Superuser ...
When I open/close Root Browser repeatedly - like for 20+ times - "su" REALLY, randomly, stops working. Man, I never noticed that bug ever before.
In my case the bug can be reproduced on the X8 running GDX v022 on Stock Kernel as well as on my SGS GalTab 10.1 (rooted, Stock "Google I/O" firmware, Stock Kernel).
I guess we should file a bug report to the Superuser dev.
EDIT: And once superuser "died" Titanium Backup hangs at "Getting root rights..." during start-up and needs to be force closed (long-press of the back button to kill the app). A reboot of the system solves the problem, just as you wrote.

thank you very much! superuser bug is confirmed! if the developer solves this problem i will be so happy!
i hope in a better release of SU, a second thank 4 u

is anyone else having the issue where toggle settings hangs on boot with cyanogen 4.04 on a 32b phone?
it works fine thereafter.
same problem since 4.01...
use "easy switcher" for now
may be the app issue and not rom issue
Same issue.
I'm currently running his latest build. Which is obviously experimental.
However; even after using the command in the terminal emulator:
# su
# fix_permissions
That's the ONLY application I have a FORCE CLOSE notification for upon startup. Otherwise, I'm golden.
It's my favorite TOGGLE application, even with his custom widget selection, I refuse to be rid of this simply due to the favorable user-interface. It's a gorgeous application. Far superior to the likes of other switchers.
I think it's a problem with that app running as a widget on a HERO Rom..i still love it though!
its not an app problem, because it ran without a hitch with my stock t-mobile rom. i have no clue what is causing it.
i'll try that fix permissions thing and see what happens

Dual-post.
Anyway, yes...in regards to it being an application issue. That is not the case. It is more than capable of running on the basic firmware which is as of now; Google Android 1.5 (Cupcake) - therefore it's a flaw in design, permissions issue, or should simply be uninstalled, REBOOT your device, then upon booting after your load up, RE-DOWNLOAD the application once the cache clears.
That could be a potential fix.

Root (of all evil). Help with Root Problem Please.

I used to have superuser/root running fine on my Vibrant. Busybox, titanium backup, everything worked.
I went to install RyanZA's lag fix (specifically the update.zip pack with a new superuser app, different busybox, etc someone else made) and started having troubles. The superuser requests were not working.
Now, I tried to go back to the original update.zip on this thread. I have the original Ninja superuser icon, etc. Now, when programs request SU, I can click allow or deny, the program hangs, and then I get:
"Sorry!
The appication Superuser Permissions (process com.noshufou.android.su) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again."
And my root access is denied.
I've restarted, used different superuser update.zips, all about 10 times each in different combinations. I can't get past this error.
Question: How can I erase all the root crap I have on my phone and start over fresh? I can't even terminal "SU" to enable superuser.
lag fix...? vibrant isnt fast enough for you?

QUOTE OF THE DAY!!!
As for your issue, you may try contacting the person whose update.zip you used and ask what it modifies/any reported issues like yours, and how to fix it. That's your best bet I think.
Have you tried using Clockwork ROM Manager and restoring to a pre-lag fix state? This same problem happened to me when I tried to install the lagfix from an update.zip file that I tried to access by rebooting the phone while holding down the volume and power keys.
The only way I got the lagfix to install properly was to use Clockwork to restore using nandroid, then used the one-click method (connected to the pc, in debugging mode, etc.). Now everything is working perfectly.
BTW, I have read some folks posting that they can't tell the difference between stock and lagfixed... My experience is exactly the opposite. The Vibrant is *much* faster when lagfixed.

Clockwork was unable to work because superuser kept crashing. I couldn't do ANYTHING root related.
I did solve the problem though, so for anyone else that has the same issue with SU FCing:
Goto: Menu - Settings - Applications - Manage Applications - Menu button - Filter, Choose to show "all" - Find & choose Superuser Permissions in the list - CLEAR DATA.
This fixed the problem for me, hopefully this will help someone else!

I had this same problem (Clockwork couldn't fix permissions because Superuser Permissions kept FC'ing, and lots of google searching resulted in no help until I found this. Saved me from losing a few days of important text messages because I'm an idiot and hadn't backed up prior to doing a cognition update that didn't go well the first time around. THANK YOU!
worked! you the man my gee
Thanks man..
It seems that it happened when I uninstalled some apps. after that I connected my rooted Desire Z to PC, typed "adb shell" and "su" and.... "permission denied" appeared!
Went through some other apps, and none of them had root access! After rebooting phone, Superuser app crashed, and it kept crashing...
I cleared application data for Superuser app, and - voila! I got my root back again!
Thanks!
Have the droid charge. Superuser stopped working. All my apps started failing with "the application superuser has stopped unexpectedly". Clearing the data didn't do anything. I finally cleared data, uninstalled the superuser app and reinstalled it. Back up and running. Thanks everyone!
Been having issues with the most recent few ARHD ROMs (HTC Sensation), superuser force closing, etc. cleared SU data and all is well again! thanks.

Archos 101 one-click-root for firmware 2.0.71 using Archangel

Download rar file with apk:

Archangel one-click-root from the Archaism Team
This will give you temporary or permanent root on your Archos 101 - firmware 2.0.71
Archos are kind enough to provide a SDE firmware which can allow root access,
but involves some significant changes to the system and they say that they will
invalidate your warranty if you install it. This is a bit frightening for new owners.
Archangel solves this with a painless one-click-root which you can uninstall at any time.
It does not use the SDE developer firmware.
This was specifically designed for the Archos 101 with firmware 2.0.71 - it may work on
other Archos devices or firmwares, but has not been tested and is not recommended for them.
If you find this application useful, please donate to those great forums who have given
the android root community so much. Encourage them to keep up their great work. We are
fans of C-Skills Blog, XDA Developers and Modaco Forum.
When installed, this app will use approx 10mb of storage space. Don't run it if you don't
have that much spare.
Usage Instructions:
1) Make sure you have 10mb of space available on the internal storage
2) Make sure you are connected on Wifi
3) Run the Archangel app
4) Click to install SuperUser application
5) Click to get root!
6) Check everything is working correctly, try an app which needs root
7) Once you have root you can tick the "Permanent" root option to always have root.
8) Party Hard!
To turn off root, either just reboot, or turn off permanent root and reboot if you had
enabled it.
To uninstall, just uninstall like any other app. You may also want to use the menu item
to clean up before you uninstall.
You can create a script in /sdcard/sdcard/extraroot.sh and this will be executed as root
whenver you reboot, so you can use this to do any additional root functions you want.
Enjoy!
does this work?
anyone try yet?
I have A70 so i'm not sure if this will work for me
ohh a video demo would be nice
I think this is a scam "Permanent" root is not possible because the filesystem is a read-only filesystem. But I can be wrong.
I'll download this and try to inspect it.
I hope this works, I really want to get Titanium Backup working.
Well I haven't tried yet, but did a quick analysis on the APK:
Permissions on the APK does not seem to be too fishy:
Storage: modify/delete SD card contents
System tools: view and change WIFI state
and automatically start at boot
APK contains superuser, su and ls binaries.
It Works
jsperri: I saw the same as you when I looked at it.
I did install it and it seems to be working. I was able to go su from the terminal and backup an app with Titanium Backup.
I can also confirm that if permanent root is checked this will still work after reboot. When I was looking at the app it looked like it plugged into the launcher process. So perhaps it is just starting just after android is loaded.
Although I have not verified, I suspect that /system is still read only because of squashfs.
What bothers me is first the dates within the apk are 29/2/2008 for all files.
Then the binaries su is a gzipped binary superuser is a gzipped superuser.apk BUT ls is not compressed.
Why do they need ls the ls of the ROM should work fine. I suspect a trojan but i'm not sure. I could be paranoid but a rar with passwords come on......

So xdaAlan your first post and you claim it works and what proof you can give us? screenshots maybe.....
I agree with extreme caution on files coming from the "wild" (my apologies to archaism1).
Permissions on the APK seems to be reasonably OK.
Like wdl1908 I was also puzzled about the files dates and the presence of ls binary.
Well, I'll run this Archangel beast on a resetted tablet and report here the results with proofs
The ls binary is definitely fishy I reexamined the rar file and the file dates for the readme.txt and the apk are 18/8/2009 whats up with that.......

Thxs jsperri I don't have a spare unit and don't really want to reset my unit.
Does not seem to be doing much on my A32 test machine.
Just tested on my 70H, no root either ;(
What the application does is:
- install superuser apk
- does something while it says "please wait"
(ps on adb shell shows a
Code:
/tmp/ls 0x62c7a315 0x260de680
so ls may well be part of the exploit)
There is a checkbox "Permanent root" that probably just starts Archangel program on boot
(this is just my guess, based on the APK permission, and the fact there is little chance that the squashfs gets written)
Well, I'm pausing my investigation here, waiting for others feedback, hopefully positive.
There is a screenshot of the application here along with a comment from a user saying it worked on an Archos 70 IT.
hi,
i haven't been very careful about trojan risks, but i installed it on my 70it and it works!
how can i know if a trojan is instaled?

Was WIFI enabled ?
How long does it take after the button says "Please wait" ?
What's next step on screen ?
Regarding the trojan risk, it's hard to say, you'd eventually want to run tcpdump to log for internet traffic on the tablet when the program is running. Also check if there are programs left (appart from Superuser) after uninstalling Archangel.
note: after install, i didn't asked to be "permanent root", but it launches "archangel" at startup anyway (but no root if i don't ask for)
wifi enabled: yes, enabled AND connected, if not it can't get "root"
how long? if wifi connected, say... 15-25 sec...
next step: nothing, the button "install root" changes in "i'm root" or something like this...
note: i had "superuser" already installed (but not rooted) before installing archangel, so it didn't asked me to install superuser
i'll try to be more precise next time if important...
archaism1,
Can you please give us some details on Archangel program, how the exploit works, why is Wifi necessary ? It would be great to trust this new tool, but it's difficult without having more details on a program coming from a dump archive and not a very well know author...

Will this work on my archos 43 Internet tablet ? Anyone brave to test and report.
http://www.appbrain.com/app/root-checker/com.joeykrim.rootcheck
anyone tried root-checker after trying this "1-click-root"? to check that it does what it claims?
I'd love to believe this, but i'm naturally sceptical.
i just tried (archos 70IT), and "rootchek" says it's ok
well at least that is promising , thanks

Phone suddenly says its not rooted?!? Help

I just started using DX and then i tried to use system app remover to delete something and then it says my phone is not rooted? i still have superuser and rootexplorer works. Busybox cannot be installed because its not rooted?
Any suggestions?? i need to root again or what??
Weird because root explorer works..and superuser is still there.
you have to root it again,
it wont remove any files
so if you did it once a second time wont be as hard
I also use Ginger DX, and have the same problem as yours. System App Remover seems not compatible with GingerDX. I suggest u to use Titanium Backup to uninstall system app. It works well with GingerDX.
This is a known bug... please refer to this thread..
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1205566
Let's just hope the fund raiser is a success and DX will get a new X8 soon
1. try to get in terminal emulator (if you have one) and type there "su"
and check if ($ goes to # )
2. you might delete some essential app which helps system work in rooted mode so try to reinstall ROM. if still doesn't work try to root that again. (it's quite easy with super user one click)
just root it again.. only 1 click
No no no guys! It's a bug in the GingerDX series. Just wait for doixanh to fix it.

What & where is this "myls" process

My N7 is rooted and encrypted (manually, no toolkit) with stock rom.
I left it unattended for a couple of days, and when I flip open the cover, there's a process called "myls" asking for root permission. I denied it twice, and hasn't been asked since.
I went to terminal and tried to find the process/file named "myls" and found nothing. Nothing out of ordinary shows up on installed apps list. Search for myls+android yields nothing relevant.
How do I find the app/process responsible for this root request? Is this something I should worry about?
Thanks!
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
bump
I have the same process now requesting root access on my galaxy nexus phone. I am rooted and running codename android ROM. I'm also curious to know what this myls process is that would like root access...
Hi. I was curious too about this process who popped up today asking for su after i was playing with scripts etc. Then i searched on active processes from terminal and noticed that myls proc is used by ScriptManager app ?. I'm using that app from two years and today is the first time i see myls proc. Maybe that's depending on what script we use with the SM's widget becouse myls popped when i run the "flush.sh" script of V6 Supercharger from the widget. You can try yourself: type su on terminal, then type ps and check the aplication that has the same USER as mysl. On my case is app_91 same as SM. Hope that helps ?
Bump?
Yeah, this requested access after I rebooted my CM10 device. My only root apps are:
Titanium Backup
AdAway
SetCPU
Pimp My ROM
PDroid 2.0
Script Manager
Root Explorer
Android Firewall
GOO Manager
Lucky Patcher (for an irritating license nag -I pay for my apps)
BusyBox Pro
SuperSU (paid version)
I run v6 and KAK scripts, too but have been doing that for ages. It's the randomness of it that I find suspect. Any further thoughts in this would be quite helpful as this seems to be the only discussion about it on the internets, period.
