What color tint does your screen have? Blue, Yellow or Neutral?

In conjunction to the post, "blue tint problem," which isn't really a problem but anyway....
I thought it'd be interesting to create a poll to see where everyone's at with their Vibrants.
Please participate in the poll, it'll be very interesting to see...
So if you're on the blue side or yellow side, obviously submit yours accordingly, however, for neutral that's for those who have calibrated monitors that can get true comparisons to determine if it's neutral.
There's no need to lie here LOL..it's just for fun so the more accurate it is the better. Don't just click neutral if you don't really know for sure. Try comparing your phone first with other Vibrants to be sure.

It's slight blue, but related to viewing angle and screen brightness. Viewing straight on, it's pretty neutral.

I know what you mean. Could the SAMOLED screen perhaps slightly change in its color tone as it warms up?
When I fired up the two Vibrants I have that was turned on for the first time and compared it to my other two which has been in use, the two never been used phones screen looked identical in its tone/shade.
So perhaps over time it does change as it, "breaks in?"

Does anyone know if this blue tint will get better with time? Mine seems to be the same, wondering if I should exchange my phone.

Well, mine is more cyan, though I can understand people calling it blue and it's driving me crazy. Even with brightness all the way up, there is no real white. This issue will likely cause me to return my Vibrant - along with the cheap build quality - as my Nexus screen looks much better and neutral in comparison. Even my wife noticed it immediately though she also has a Nexus.

Neutral, I've compared with monitors and other Vibrants from my T-Mobile store.

The blue should fade over time..sometimes they put in a bit of extra blue to compensate the blue's lower life span..if you want to even it out use a blue background as your home screen for a while and it should even out >.>

Are you sure it will fade? Where did you get that info from, I know wikipedia talks about this and says the same thing, but wikipedia is not really that accurate. Where did you get your info?
I downladed an LCD test app from market, i'm running a constanst blue screen hoping it will help fade out the blue tint a bit. thanks

When compared to mine my wife's had a very strong blue tint to it. Since I ordered ours over the phone I called Tmobile. They overnighted me a replacement without any hassle, I'd give them a call and see what they will do for you.

Thats what im saying, i mean in all honesty you can barely tell, maybe they upped the blue output so that when everyone plaed avatar for the first itme on thre phones ppl were like damn the blues looks so good.....

I agree, stupidest topic ever. I thought I seena blue tint but now its gone. And as fast as the nexus screen looking nicer...my friend had his over the other day and it looks dull compared to the vibrant.
I guess if your imagining a blue tint, or don't know how to change screen settings them maybe you need a less advanced device.

I guess if you did not receive a defective Vibrant with an extremely blue screen, even with brightness all the way up and power saving mode off, your not qualified to speak for those who did. Of course it would not make sense to you.

i dont know about you guys but every time Ive ever seen a white LED its always had a blueish tint (like automotive LED's) its really not that big of an issue

My display was noticeably blue the moment I turned it on... going to the T-Mobile store today to see if I can get a better unit with a more neutral color temperature.

It matters to some people more than others. If it doesn't bother you then great. It's not really fair to criticize people who are bothered by it--one should have a reasonable expectation for color accuracy of their display, especially for a device so touted as being a multimedia powerhouse.

I'm a graphic designer. I work with colors for a living every day. I've come to think that I have a pretty decent grasp of color.
Like I said, if you can't tell or it doesn't bother you or your handset isn't afflicted--great! But please don't dismiss the complaints of others simply because you "can barely tell the diff". ****

I have that issue with the blue screen and for some reason I'm the only one who sees it, I work for T-Mobile and I was showing my co-workers that there is a blue tint to the screen and they didn't see it it until I compared it to another phone. I'm also a graphic artist and I guess we see colors that others don't notice cuss we have too that's what we do. I also had a issue with the screen, there was some pixelation on my screen so I exchanged it.

You know, some people here say every Super Amoled has a blue tint. I have to disagree. I've been comparing my vibrant side by side to other vibrants, and the screens vary from phone to phone. Samsung deffinately has some manufacturing inconsistences. Side by side to other Vibrants, my screen has a very visible dark grayish blue tint. Other vibrants have a slight blue/green tint. While other vibrants i've compared to have gorgeus warm whites. 1 vibrant had a very dingy yellow look to all the whites. So this is not in our imagination, the screens vary a lot on these phones.
My cousin just got the vibrant this morning, she had not seen mine. She saw mine this morning and says "why is your screen blue?" Put mine side by side next to hers, and hers has nice warm bright whites. All of our brightness settings were identical.
I'll be exchanging shortly when I have time.

So, does your replacement still show the blue screen tint?

Display problem/yellowish left side

Just got my new SGS2 3 days ago, really liking it but stumbled into a screen problem and would like to know if it's just me/it's normal/I need to change a setting to fix the problem.
Just like the title says, the left side (about 1/3) of my screen changes the colour of the image to a more yellowish tint. This seems to happen just when the brightness is quite low, and tends to disappear when close to 100%.
It is rather subtle, but can be seen where there's white text on a darker background (white characters become darker the closer they are to the left border), or when looking at an uniform colour.

When visiting it on the S2 browser and setting browser brightness to around 20%, it becomes quite visible.
Anybody else with the same problem?

We still DO NOT have pictures of a phone WITHOUT the problem described above!
If you believe your SGS2 has a perfect screen, please post pics of the notification area taken in the dark at both 0-20% brightness and 100% brightness!

I have just sent an email to GSMarena asking if they could check the unit they reviewed to see if it has the same problem. Of all the phone reviews I have seen, theirs seems to be the most focused on image quality, I'm sure that if their unit doesn't have this problem, they would be able to take clear shots of a flawless screen.

GSMarena took screens of their unit using the above test link, and while so far I believe theirs is the best looking display that we have seen so far, it *STILL* has the problem.
I am going to link this thread to samsung UK next, in the hopes they will give an official answer acknowledging the problem.

latest firmwares seem to fix this problem or at least make it much less noticeable.

Take it straight back and swap it. Seems to be a growing amount of people on here, including myself, with various dodgy screen issues.

The screen doesn't look perfect if you look at a uniform color on the whole screen + low brightness, but... well I don't tend to use it much for that. Could be a limitation in OLED production-technology getting all the pixels to have exactly the same brightness/color etc.

To answer directly to the question here, no I don't have a yellowish left side. It's just not completely uniform across the whole screen.

I've got this same thing. I first noticed it when using Estrongs file explorer. I always have my screen turned down to 0% to save battery, but didn't notice this anywhere else yet (at least I didn't think about it).
Your posted image does show it clear.
What to do? Could you others comment whether you've seen this? Go to the OP's posted link and set your brightness down to 0%.

I tried to mess around with settings such as auto adjust screen power etc, but the only thing that seems to fix it is crank up the brightness.
We obviously can't keep it anywhere close to 100% tho, this phone sucks battery down quickly already at 0%!
Another thing you can do to check if you have this screen problem is call *#*#0*#*#*
This will make the phone go in the diagnostic program, and if you try the white diagnostic, you can somewhat see the problem, although not quite as clearly as in the test web page I posted above.
I'm considering to return the phone, as it doesn't seem to be getting better, despite having read that some screen problems might go away after a few days.

Mine is exactly the same. It's noticeable at the lowest brightness setting, however if I increase the brightness even slightly it pretty much disappears for general use. It's still there but not really enough to bother me.
On the OP's link I changed the brightness through several settings and at certain brightness levels the whole screen gets a yellow tint. Not necessarily related to the left side of the screen having a yellow tint, apart from I guess a lack of brightness of the blue subpixels relative to the red and green.
I'm not sure if I'm imagining it but I think it has improved slightly on mine over the past week. However if it gets any worse I think a warranty claim will be in order.

Hhrrmm, I'm in a catch-22 here. There's generally a grace period for any manufacturing errors like this where you can quickly get a replacement just by returning it to the vendor. Problem is, my vendor won't be getting any new units in for another two weeks.

I don't see it clearly on the link he posted.
But i do see it in the notification screen. The grey area is slightly darker/yellow tint on the left site. Even when i put it on maximum brightness you could see it. Especially when you first concentrate your eyes on the right side for 5 seconds and than on the left side.
I do seem to notice it on the notification grey slider where your finger is on when you pull it down, on the left side the grey is a little bit "darker" than on the right side of mt finger.
I tend to think I can also see it on the keyboard, whereas the Q has different grey than P on the opposite of the screen...
Anybody could check this out on their phone??

As time goes by, it feels like my problem is getting worse, although it may only be due to me being aware of it.
Also began noticing it in the pull-down message field. Now I see it against white backgrounds as well, almost like a faint green-grey shadow.
I've contacted my vendor and requested an RMA and replacement. They're sending me a shipping slip to send it to them "for control" then they'll contact me on my options from there. Can only hope they see it as clearly as I do and that they send me a new phone as a replacement rather than repair/refurb crap.
Think this is the last time I buy electronics online. I saved 20% off retail on this one, but having the option to do a walk-in replacement at a brick-n-mortar store would have been worth the higher price. <sigh>

But if the majority does not have it, I would like to have one without it. Do you think Samsung knows abouth it?
When you have a full grey pictuere or just the notification screen and you go into a perfect dark room. Can you also see, some white vertical en horizontal lines? Looks like hardware where the screen is build on?

Here is a photo I took of my screen with a grey background (see below - click on it to enlarge).
For me, its visibility seems to vary depending on the ambient light, but I'm definitely seeing more effects of it now.
Really hope I'm able to get a good replacement. Am reading quite a bit about this, banding, lines and dead/lit pixels.

so do you think it's a hardware issue, or maybe it will be gone??

The lines you mention are present both on my SGS and my SGS2. It seems to be patterns in the actual OLED pixels, and the patterns and lines are static even when you move pictures. Mostly visible on lower display brightness settings. I've gotten used to them and they don't bother me, and since I have the same thing on two SAMOLED-phones I'd chalk that one up to "just the way it is" aswell. Using anything over 50% brightness has them mostly fade into the display light so only really visible on the lowest brightness settings.

This what you mean?
My Samsung focus and Cowon s9 (which I don't even think has a samsung oled screen) have that as well on the lowest brightness, I think its inherent to the tech.

On a grey pick with full birghtness I can see them too.
On the post 2 post above yours(quist his post) you can see the lines, but now they are not white, but darker, can you confirm you see them and this is what you mean?
Do you also have the yellowish tint on the left side?

For both the SGS and SGS2, the dark lines are there for my devices aswell. They can seem a bit "grainy", and don't seem like perfectly defined lines, though they generally are always straight horizontal or vertical lines. I also have the Xperia Arc at hand, and if you look at a grey-ish image on either the SGS/SGS2, or the Xperia Arc (LCD), the Arc generally has a very smooth grey image, while the SGS/SGS2 has almost like a fine overlay of subtle lines or grids, generally darker in color than the image displayed, though not clearly defined and not completely symmetrical across the display.
Doesn't seem symmetrical enough to be a grid fo the digitizer layer or smtn like that, but definitely a pattern in the display itself. I still pick an AMOLED screen anytime of the day, the Arc display, while more uniform and "blemish"-free in this regard, still has that LCD backlight bleed-through which for me makes the display alot more tiring for the eyes.
Also my SGS2 has a very subtle tint towards yellow when viewing some of the grey test-images some people have posted. Never noticed it on my SGS1, so either I didn't look well enough, or it might be either hardware-related (something causing the pixels on the left side to perhaps not get the same amount of control voltage/whatever for the pixels, thus causing less blue/more yellowish color), or software. Either way, it is way too subtle for me to care at all, maybe this is even according to spec for the SAMOLED+ and some use will even the pixels out, not sure if anyone has some inside knowledge about the SAMOLED screens.

I am definitely seeing this problem getting worse, now it is getting rather obvious as long as phone is lit by artificial light or in the dark, while sunlight seems to make it really hard to spot, even if not direct.
I've been given advice from samsung call center to bring to phone to the closest assistance point, which I'm going to do tomorrow - hope to be able to report back that it is a known problem and they will change my unit.

I hate to make an iPhone reference here, since I'm *not* a fanboy, but Engadget reported when the IP4 was released that yellow spots and banding were due to glues that had not completely dissolved/disappeared and were part of the bonding process of the screen:

Now - the picture above showing a completely yellow left-side display - that looks 100% abnormal and I'd RUN back to the store to swap it out. I don't think that's glue related.
Download an app from the Market called "Dead Pixel Test" and run it with the white setting to see what it looks like. Is it still yellow?

Have this same issue. Noticed it right away unfortunately. It will always bother me if I deal with it.

Screen feedbacks/issues

For the current owners, especially for those who are 'extremely' particular about the screen, do you guys any screen related issues?
I've been with the Galaxy S1 and S8500, both devices used the first generation SAMOLED screen and I never had any screen related issues on both devices but as of late there's been a lot of screen issues ( mostly quality control related ) on the Galaxy S2, Galaxy Note and Galaxy Nexus..
To name a few:
- faint but visible horizontal/vertical lines visible on white/grey images
- green/blue color tint when the device is tilted with in just a few degree's
- uneven screen brightness
- suction cup rings
- blotchy/spotty blacks, you can see darker or brighter spots when the screen is displaying an entire black image - All Tab7.7's have spotty blacks, if anyone has a screen w/o spotty blacks please post it up here, it would help a lot of people.
I owned a Galaxy S2, replaced for a total of 7 times all had different screen related issues and I decided to get a refund for and got the G-Note when It came out, already had 1 screen replacement which resolved the lines issue but other screen related issues took its place, still waiting for the 3rd screen replacement to arrive and also processing a refund if they are not able to fix it.
I plan to make the Tab7.7 as my primary media device ( please spare me the 'get a plasma tv defense' ) and a web browsing device so screen quality is very important to me and most of the time it will be used at 0-10% screen brightness in a dark room (bed room).
Using the Tab in a totally dark room is nothing considered as 'extreme conditions' just because not everyone has the same usage pattern does not translate to 'extreme conditions only' situation.
Id like to ask a very honest and objective feedback from the current owners, I also understand that as of now only a few have this device. Testing in a dark room or with minimal ambient light is preferred as reflections can really skew results.
For anyone also wanting to contribute check the following images on your Tab 7.7 and put it in full screen and see if there are any uneven shades,lines or anything to report about.
This thread will get more exposure as the Tab 7.7 is slowly rolled out around the world. I would like to restate that this is purely an objective thread and not the subjective 'i dont see it in normal use' because not everyone has the same normal usage. Its not to say that all of the Tab7.7 screens are defective but Id like to see how wide spread the issue is based on XDA-Developer members. Again people, objective and not subjective.

For now it seems that I've gotten enough feedback and expect the very same issues from the Galaxy S2, Need a huge amount of luck for the purchase on my end.

We need someone who claims that their black screen output is very uniform and does not have any spots, so far nobody has posted yet but we do see claims but these claims are not enough, for the sake of research anyone with an screen with no blotches or spots on black post up.

After checking out and screening a total of 15 units from different stores and different dates, I've managed to see only 2 units with 'acceptable' screens. I say acceptable because I am expecting the grey rendering to be as good as on the Galaxy S and S8500. I will be getting one tomorrow but it still has a visible darker top part and lighter bottom when rendering greys.
The very common issue I've seen is a visible thick vertical/horizontal lines on the screen when rendering greys and either a yellowish or greenish discoloration at the bottom and some reddish bleeding on the edges ( mostly top ) I dont think a screen that can render greys on the Tab7.7 exists for now but Im sure it will be possible 6-8 months down the road when screen production gets better.
Different shades of greys are my objective way of testing the screen quality as it easily cuts down the time needed to do so, if a certain screen passes my objective test I goto the subjective test, Load up Thumbkeyboard and use the split lay out with the ICS theme and observe if the shades on the letters from Q to P are the same, some screens that fail the objective test actually produce good results on the subjective test, while others really give out a very obvious discoloration, also all of my tests are done with 0% brightness since thats the brightness i will be using 90% of the time, as the brightness ramps up these discolorations become less obvious.

Crucial images are the grey-15 and grey-25, test in a room w/o any directly light or reflections from your face. 0-33% brightness.

Companies always add a cost buffer to cover for returns and that is usually with upto 3 returns, but complacent people just accepting obivous defects are also the cause for this level of quality control since Samsung can now get away with it, especially that some people are false advocating that there are issues thats normal to AMOLED which is incorrect.
I havent used my Tab yet as an ebook reader so Im not exactly sure what they are experiencing but the pictures posted paint a clear picture, It can be annoying at times I suppose and when a product is marketed for its great screen and deep black levels, should anything less be expected? I mean personally coming from a Galaxy S which had none of the screen issues you've mentioned, the Tab7.7's screen should be expected to be better in every single aspect, right?
I've been quite active in this forum and I haven't seen anyone report multiple exchanges yet, I didnt even exchange my Tab yet.
I dont know who you are specifically referring to but I also use greys as my test images, let me give you a little more perspective incase you made a 'selective reading' in regards to this issue.
Grey colors easily allow you to check if your getting a quality screen or not, they can easily show those lines and discolorations with out the need for using multiple test images, they give you objective results especially when your buying the device but its not very conclusive since the store light will show a lot of reflection on the screen.
Testing at 0% brightness in low light environment is also ideal for an objective testing to avoid any reflections that you might see hiding these flaws, but if one exclusively uses the device in a very bright environment then this step can be skipped.

Sure not everyone uses the Tab7.7 as a media player, remember those visible rings and spots above? Check out the attached images.
This is because reviewers hype up the black levels saying its totally black and some internet articles say that AMOLED is in an 'off' state when displaying blacks which gives us the false information and relatively ruining expectations, my first samoled device was the S8500 (Wave) and the blacks were great, no blobs or spots and it had a very faint glow, that was the foundation of my expectation which was further reinforced by the Galaxy S that gave the same results. Others may have started with the Galaxy S2 and the expectations set by reviewers so they ended up returning their devices. On my end I returned it for the yellow tint, which the technician also confirmed that it was very visible and during that time there was nothing they can do.
Sorry for the wall of text but I felt that I should be explain this thoroughly as I am very affected by the screen issues and I am very vocal about it and it did get things done on my end.
TL;DR
Bottom line is, its a $700 device with its primary feature as the screen which is advertized,marketed and specified to have the most vivid, crisp, sharp and clear images. Others are reporting that they dont have any screen issues-what-so ever so why should someone else for settle anything less?

the 77 has same screen as the note... but it's brightness more even across the screen.. the only problem you will have is it's size... since you're coming from Note.. you might find it hard to justified it's size... like bringing it with u anywhere.? when jogging?
I am now using my old trusty ipad2 ... which I can type like a breeze...
like I said 77 has better amoled screen that early Notes...

Erm, wrong...
The Note is a PenTile display. The 7.7 is not.
The Note's PenTile arrangement uses 8 subpixels per 1 pixel.
The 7.7's SAMOLED Plus display uses 12 subpixels per 1 pixel.

I won't be brining it around for joggin of that sort, its gonna be my primary media device so it needs defect free from those random manufacturing faults.
It might be too early to ask this as probably the user count in xda is pretty small.

You are only able to see it when you have a grey or black background and your eyes are adapted to the darkness.

This device probably isn't for you, yet.
I just got the 7.7 and have issues. The brightness is a bit brighter along one side, and I have the dark spot issue, this time in the form of dark circles, equally spaced (probably from the glass handling suction cups or something)
On the bright side, at least I don't have any bad pixels ;/
BTW a good app for testing is the simple "Advanced task manager" app, it has a dark screen near black and these blotches are visible with this even in a room with some light.

I used my galaxy tab 7.7 for almost a month and i must say , the dark circles are truly annoying especially when you watch movies with dark scenes in a dark room with low brightness.You can hide the dark circles by increasing the brightness but it is a simple waste of battery life and its really bright in dark room. I also noticed screen burn in for the wifi and battery icon, i used my 7.7 on zero brightness since day 1 and screen burn-in still persist after 3 weeks. Good way to see the dark circles is by simply turning off the tablet, the tablet will "glow" with the dark circles after the samsung logo is gone.

My old and new one have these rings. I'm guessing its glue or something bonding the screen to a backplate. Or an imprint of a backplate on the screen.
In any case I think this is not a problem or defect. You really must be in total darkness and viewing a black screen to see it. And even then its very hard to see.

Thanks for the heads up, It would seem that the darker spots are quite obvious since the screen is bigger, I also had those spots on some of my Galaxy S2 replacements and I found it very unacceptable and the same with my Note.
When I was testing at the store which had the usual store lighting one unit had several visible lines in greys while the other one only had 3 lines just in the middle.
For the uneven brightness on the screen, Im pretty sensitive to that.. when I saw the HC task bar in landscape mode I immediately noticed a difference in brightness but only 1 of the 2 exhibited the issue.
The screen burn-in is a concern as Im getting the same feedback from friends who bought the unit just last week!
I understand that not all screens have this issue but the chances of getting an out of spec screen might be pretty high, wish they brought back the same quality control when the Galaxy S initially came out, which had none of these issues what so ever.

It is a defect and a very bad one, also the visibility on this is not the same on all units. I have a suction up ring on my Galaxy Note which is visible at the 'service center lighting conditions' which the tech also saw the rings. Several pictures of this issue also posted on the various Galaxy S2 forums here in XDA under a well lit condition.

Seems like it until screen yields improve or I get a chance to get one w/o any of these out of spec issues.

No screen is perfect, not even the ipad screen.
Ihave a galaxy s2 and rememeber hearing all the burn in worries last year. Almost a year later now and i dont have any burn in.
The only issue ive noticed is that some pixels on oled can have a slightly differrent brightness than others due to the nature of oled. Yes my s2 has a tiny amount of pixels like that,
But you have to look at it at the wrong angle with the wrong amount of ambient light with the wrong colour on the screen to notice it.
Yes a larger screen is likely to have more issues but if it was an ips screen then we would no doubt all complain about backlight bleed.
My advice is stop looking for problems with it and enjoy your tablet otherwise you will never be happy with it !

Like what you said, no perfect screen but there are some screens that are made better, A year of usage with no burn-in is fantastic! Some are getting it as early 30days from purchase.

Yes to certain degree there are but they should not be noticeable to the naked eye, if its noticeable then its purely a quality control issue.

Well that depends on the usage, Im not pushing my own usage to anyone as I believe not everyone watches movies or browses the web on the tab7.7 with close to 0% brightness and in total darkness. My usage revolves on that so there are no special conditions on my end. I hope this is understandable.

I do not look for these issues intentionally and I see them with my normal usage, thats why I intend to research first before taking the plunge. But I understand I might have a higher standards that others but thats just me, I want to get the most of my purchase or not purchase at all.
Long story short, all the screen issues I've found on my Galaxy S2 was due to normal usage including the yellow tinting and darker spots which annoyed the heck out of me considering the cost of the device. On the Galaxy Note I've read about the all the screen related issues even on the video issue and still said to my self 'these things should not be noticeable in normal usage' but i was wrong. So this time Im taking it slowly but I already know what to expect. But I do understand what you are trying to say.

Yes, there will never be 100% perfect screens. We'd all be constantly returning devices and not actually using them because of some "defect".
I've had my S2 since it first came out in May 2011. No problems with burn-in or colour shifts. I don't expect my 7.7 to have problems either. I'm not concerned that some "defect" will manifest itself under some extreme "only if I go looking " condition.
I'm enjoying using my S2, 7.7, and Transformer for what they are - mobile devices that provide communications, entertainment, and information.

Agreed I can also accept defects as long as I dont see them with my usage. Example between my SGS2 vs Galaxy Note which shared a common issue on the darker spots but it was more obvious on the SGS2 since it was a horrible pattern while on the Galaxy Note its tiny and multiple spots.
Every defect is different and we should not all assume that they are all acceptable to everyone.

May be for you it's an extreme situation, but in my case, I bought this tablet for reading ebooks at bed (among other things) and I use white text over black background, so I am in that "extreme situation" on a daily basis.
I also have a Galaxy Nexus and that screen also have one line and some dots, but since my usage pattern is not the same it don't bothers because I really dont see it. But in the case of the tablet, I had to convince myself that I had paid a big amount of money to receive a screen with what for me is a defect.
I was the owner of a Huawei Ideos S7-105 (I now miss it) and appart from the battery and several other small annoyances I was pretty happy with it, I paid 150€ for it so I got what I paid for, but the 7.7 costs 450€ so my level of exigence is higher.
Sad thing abot all of this is that the other tablet that could be an option (Xoom 2 8.2) seems to bee plently of issues as well.

This is always the case, people who dont have the same usage pattern nor with the same issue will never understand. But its been my understanding that this is already 'common' (but not normal) among amongst the hd samoled and samoled plus.

Yes the other alternatives that I've been looking are also riddled with issues, come to think of it only samsung has the least issues based on my research.

I've seen the concerns on other AMOLED devices Earlz mentions as well.
It's not a deal beaker but you may want to keep a LCD device around for reading at night.
No use exchanging numerous times hoping for a perfect screen.
Right now while AMOLED is a very dramatic screen tech
but it's not at its best with low brightness levels,
and certain test patterns / images reveal other side effects .
For reading in the dark a screen like the iPad 2's IPS LCD is probably a better choice.
It offers a very low brightness level with consistent results.
I think the key is to use AMOLED devices where they perform best,
at higher brightness levels during the day.
In that scenario if you hand a iPad 2 and AMOLED device
to the average person they will be floored with the AMOLED screen.

I don't have any issue on low brightness level.
I always operate my 7.7 at ~0-20% brightness.

Did anyone test the screen using the screen test apps? I tested mine and I have yellowish patch at the bottom part of the screen. It's only visible in dim grey. Luckily there is no dead pixel but my screen start to squeak a little when press at the bottom corner. The quality control is really bad. I'm waiting for a engineering revision before going for warranty claim. I must say I'm disappointed.

There's been a few reports from here and another forum that the screen seems to squeak or dislodge a bit on the bottom corner.

I went for an amoled screen beause it's suposed that when screen is black pixels are off and there should be no light emiting so in my case, when reading in the dark I should only see the text, and not a bluish black background as every other LCD based screen

don't know if my eyes are playing me, I do see a couple of horizontal lines, I don't know if that is due to the screen protector or the angle the picture was taken from, don't wanna scare you, but I am hoping that the next wave of batches have a better production like the S2.

No screen protector. And yes, I set the brightness all the way down before I took that photo.
I think if you're seeing a moire pattern it may be because of the difference in resolution between the reduced-resolution image and your monitor. I'm looking at the original photo in Photoshop and when I zoom in and out I see changing moire patterns at certain zoom levels, but don't notice anything when I look at it zoomed in at 100%, or even at 50%. And of course I don't see any moire pattern when looking at the phone itself.
Oh, and the brighter area in the lower left of the photo is my hand's reflection.
I do, however, see faint horizontal (vertical in this photo) banding on the screen when looking at the phone. I couldn't say whether it's any better or worse than the black/carbon blue version, as I've never seen one. I'd describe the banding as very faint, but visible if you're looking hard for it. And when looking at a blank white screen like this, I also have a general sense that not every part of the screen is quite the same level of brightness. Again, not major, but noticeable when looking at a solid white screen.

You'd need to reduce the brightness further with Screen Adjuster from the market. The basic brightness setting at 0% is probably only at 50% of what the screen is actually at. So you can go much dimmer to reveal the manufacturing process.
Learn to live with it. The marks don't affect the functionality of the screen. While I have noticeable marks on the bottom right half of the corner and vertical streaks, I don't let it deter me from enjoying this elegant piece of tech!

That is bollocks My new white 32 GB Note has a much worse display than my former two blue 16 GB. Think I gonna send it back so that the white has a better display is pure dreams

Nexus 4 annoying visible IPS sensors

Hey guys,
I've had my nexus 4 for a week now and I am super pleased by it. The phone runs like a dream.
The only issue I seem to be having is that I can see the IPS sensors even with the screen on!.
I'm talking about the little transparent-gray squares all over it, not about the super awesome dots that you can see with direct sunlight.
This is flipping me out!
Is anybody else having this problem with it?
I can't appreciate the beautiful screen because of this.
Also, when displaying single color frames specially dark ones, like on the clock app , the colors are not really solid.
I get this vertical stripes that are approximate to the color but not quite it.
Im posting a screenshot but I don't think that youll be able to notice it since it may be a hardware problem.

That's a hardware thing, not visible in screenshots. You'd need to take an actual picture.
Are you referring to the dot grid that is visible in direct sunlight? Everyone has is. It's because of the fact that the screen is integrated into the glass.
I think it looks kind of cool but that might just be me.

Hello after using my nexus for almost 2 weeks today i noticed some vertical line (of Dots) on my screen under direct sunlight...these dots very moving and can be seen with screen off also..
is there any thing to worry..

Haha Dude that's the digitizer. Don't worry. It's all cool.

Chill out people.. Its just the digitizer that you can see, so close to the screen for better touchscreen responsiveness. The most likely reason you can still see it with your device screen on is that you have your brightness too low.. Put it up

When I first got my Nexus4 the weird screen was the first thing that popped out at me. Between the visible digitizer matrix that glints when it catches the sun wrong, to the odd rectangles that can be seen behind the screen I was initially bummed and thought about returning the phone. It doesn't even bother me anymore
This is my 8th android device and the first one that has a funky screen like this, but it really isnt a big deal. Under 95 percent of conditions it looks really nice

I have been able to see the digitizer on every single capacitive screen i have ever owned.

@David_Azar I have to agree.. initially I was disgusted by how prominent the digitzer pattern was, I've never had ANY screen show it as much as the Nexus 4 does.
However, the vertical stripes you're referencing is commonly referred to as "banding". I have this on my Nexus 4 as well, most visible on grays (especially darker grays).
I have been doing some research and I believe the banding issue will reduce over time. If you check your screen when displaying a white background at max brightness, such as gmail or chrome browser, you should see a slight yellowing of the whites. It appears this can be due to the adhesive they used to glue the digitizer to the screen not curing completely. After several weeks of use, the heat from the processor will help cure the adhesive causing the yellow to disappear after a while.
I cannot say for certain that it will completely resolve the banding issue, but I have noticed that the worst banding is in the areas where the yellow tint is most prominent. I have also been testing my display every day to monitor any changes, and I am happy to report I do see a minor reduction in both the yellowing and banding (I've only had my Nexus 4 for five days so far).
Give it a couple of weeks, run some intensive games to get the processor to heat up every day. Keep brightness at max for the next few weeks and let us know if you see any improvements.
As for the pattern of the digitizer in the glass.. it's not going anywhere so get used to it. I don't like it much either but it seems to be less prominent once you start becoming used to it.

Curiously enough I've never had the yellow tints everybody's complaining about. I'm used to The digitizer matrix ( rectangles) buy at first it was really weird. I was coming from a non HD display ( a RAZR Maxx) so naturally, I expected that my N4 would have a perfect screen.
I've had my N4 for almost two months now and the banding has not reduced. I made some research over the last month and I found that with some kernel settings for saturation the banding is reduced. I'm not sure if it is really reduced or the clear gray tones that have the banding just don't appear anymore because of the saturation.
The Trinity kernel reduces this a bit but like I said, your screen will look life a f*** ing AMOLED.
Right now I'm using the kernel provided by the 123 FAUX CLOCK project. I'm using the LG factory presets and for the most part I'm really happy with the screen. If you or anybody else comes up with a different solution, let others know on this thread.

Just for kicks, if you stop by a T-mobile location compare your screen with the display model and see if you can spot the yellow tint on either screen (on a white background)
I will update this thread with my phone's progress (or lack thereof if it stops improving).

I get banding issues also, more noticeable in grey backgrounds; but I can I see them in other colors if I look hard enough
I use a dark black theme to avoid looking at those bands

I can say this. I've had a ton of devices..latest was s3 and I'll just say I'm stoked to have IPS over pen tile. Just knowing HD was plagued by this alone was enough for me to ditch Sammy all together especially after seeing rgb on note 2 was no better. This is my opinion of Samsung's design ...I know why they chose it but I can't and won't buy another amoled until they get another tech in order. So now I say kudos on IPS but I'm surely a screen purest and I found these hardware screen/digitizer artifacts you speak of and to me its so much less noticeable. Your not alone. You just like good clean HD like me. Lol HTC one should be a nice one to check out...

That would be a little like kicking myself in the nuts. Nothing good can come out of that.
If I spot the yellow tints once, then I will always look for it. I hate doing that with the banding but it's an automatic thing.
I dunno why but it really bums me out whenever I have a problem with my phone.
Let's keep posting of someone finds a solution or something .

I've got the quite visible digitizer rectangles too. In anything less than a dark room if the phone is not on a perfect angle they are visible.
I can't really tell if "everyone's" is like that, or just some are "worse" than others.

Went and checked out an Optimus G today (Nexus 4 isn't actually released in Japan). Given that a Nexus 4 is just a remodeled Optimus G I thought it'd be worth comparing screens. The digitizer matrix is barely visible on the G I was looking at with the screen OFF. With it on you could almost see it at some angles. It is much more visible on my Nexus 4 which you can almost always see with the screen off and at an angle and often with the screen on.
I'm leaning towards my phone being "less than a perfect example of a Nexus 4" and not the "norm" at the moment.

they are much more noticeable in Rev 11 devices and they where barely visible in Rev 10, i am sure that there is a technical reason behind it

See that explains it a little more. Not sure I see the logic in putting a screen with pretty decent viewing angles on a device and then sticking a really visible digitizer on it though.
I've contacted the seller and I guess I'll wait and see what they say in regard to it.
