Hey Guys
Just wondering if it is possible for us to have rotation animations on the Galaxy S. It would much improve the looks of it, and would make the phone feel more smooth. I heard that cupcake versions of Android had it, so can we not use the libs to port it to 2.2 FROYO on the Galaxy S?
I put £20GBP as a bounty to the person who does this. Please post here if you wish to offer a bounty to a developer who manages to do this!
Thanks

This is one of those situations where open source would come in handy.
Your best bet would be to wait for cm/aosp for our phones and then modify source.
IMHO
I too would appreciate this as long as it didn't sacrifice performance in any way, shape, or form
Another thing that bugs me is that the screen fade on/off is not quite perfect. It was terrible in Eclair, in the latest Froyo XWJPA the fade on is nearly perfect but fade off is still choppy.
You'd think something as simple as fading the display on or off would be piece of cake for this beast. The Aria and Milestone that I use do it very smooth no problem.
It's just little things like this that, when put together, make or break the experience.
IMHO
If yo guys try it in SGS Tools it will animate. Maybe someone can port that over to all other apps? Pretty sure its not very simple...

SGS Tools or SpareParts?
I know this is pretty old but has anyone been able to add screen rotation animations to the SGS yet ? (Possibly for 2.2.1?)

Not as far as I know. No Android device has had it since cupcake and I don't see it coming back based on the fact that nobody has worked on it for any phone AFAIK.
The latest Froyo ROMs like JPY are fast enough that's it not as important as it once was, but I still feel that it would give an awesome premium feel to the UI and I'd gladly donate if it was done.

what do you mean by rotation animations? is it same as transition effects? as I start with Froyo I dont have any Imagination about cupcake
^he means the iphone animation when you rotate the screen. you seen it or not?
I see it on the Tablet-PC Video with Android 3.0. But it is a long way to it. So I would love to see a good animation on the Galaxy. I would donate, too!
I wonder if we could do a pseudo rotation.
You could run a service that monitors the sensor and when the phone is turned it could quickly take a screen shot. The animate that and then show the real screen.
So it would go: Sensor rotate triggered> Portrait Screen shot before rotate allowed, Rotate screen, but show Portrait screen, Screen shot screen underneath> Spin Portrait screen shot around center>Fit and overlay ontop of Portrait screen the landscape screen shot to center and stretch to correct size> then show real landscape Screen.
Hmm I know it sounds alot, but this phone it fast and actually the Iphone rotate isn't THAT fast, it seems to have a little more delay tolerance on rotate than Androids do.
I'm sure this kind of thing would be very easy for a dev to try out. Wish I was a dev
Logicalstep
Yeah SGS Tools has Rotation animations, try it and you'll see what i mean. I tried using the XML's from the app in the framework but nothing changed
Has anyone find solution on this one jet? Seems like the SGS2 has got it http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1362354 ...
We have kind of rotation animation on ICS but it is far away from what can be...
.... take a look at this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1382242 ....
You also can install an other launcher. I'm using nova launcher prime.

I will soon be buying a new Dell Streak. I'm unsure if it comes with the previous Android 1.6 or the new 2.2...
After looking through some forums here at different roms, whether it be 1.9, 2.1 or 2.2, different people have completely different opinions with regards to the rom, stability, reliability, speed, etc...
This confuses me purely as it leaves me wondering:
1 - What's the BEST one to go with? Which version, 1.9, 2.1, 2.2, which one is best? what's the difference?
2 - I need something near 100% perfect with regards to reliability and functionality, some roms have issues, users complaining with certain functions not working, bugs, camera performance issues, etc...
3 - Which rom/version of Android will give me the BEST performance? Something blazingly smooth/fast, at least that of an Iphone 4g...
I currently own the HTC Desire HD. While it has the SAME spec as the Streak apart from having slightly more ram, the Desire HD's performance seems to be better than that of the STREAK.
What options have I got that can make my Streak operate as good as if not better than my current Desire HD?
The hardware in the Streak is VERY capable, having 512 of ram and a 1gb cpu and therefore should perform well, it's not much different to the iphone 4.
It's having the same ram and a 1gb cpu as the iphone 4.
Your answers are much appreciated guys & gals.
Thanks in advance.
I'm on stock 354-1 version and it's the most stable reliable version I've seen. I've tried all of DJ-Steve's versions and, as good as they are, I've always had problems when using them. Sometimes minor, sometimes major, but always at least one or two problems.
I've not tried any of the latest flavors either.
I get the best performance & reliability from the 354-1 version.
Also, buy a good case. I recommend the otterbox defender. You have to protect your device.
Don't wast money buying any accessories from Dell. They are overpriced. Do a search on the forums for any accessories you may think you need and you'll find a ton of people with reliable experience to point you in the correct direction.
Learn to enjoy looking at you funny when you pull out your Dell Streak and wonder "What's that?"
The streak is the ultimate Android phone!
Just my 2cents.
You can't say the streak and the iphobe4 are the same cause they have the same specs. The iphone 4 is a faster phone.
Having said that, I don't miss my ip4 at all.
As for most of the complaints about custom roms, it's usually user error.

yeah stock 354 to start with & if your felling adventurous you can flash your steak with a custom rom
im using simplestreak at the moment its based on 345 so its rock solid & its lite as hes took out some of the crap from it

scdsone, eSZee & rvbarton, thanks a bunch for the info and the links for the roms.
I am now downloading the 354 build that scdsone.
It should be all I need, not interested in any extra programs/apps since I already have many of my own...
Will try the rom sometime next week, need to get my Streak first, will definately get it soon...
before you purchase do some research regarding the screen.
@shinydesert, used to have one, nothing wrong with the screen as long as your careful with it...
With regards to portrait screen mode, there is a topic on how to do this but it's complicated and a long process.
Is there any other simple and quick way of making the screen portrait instead of landscape?
Thanks.
kanej2006, to get most of the Camera, download Camera360 which is a great replacement for taking photos.
The SimpleStreak rom sets the screen in portrait as the default. I prefer to use the streak in landscape though. It just feels right.

The latest version of LauncherPro will lock the homescreen in portrait. I turned off "Enable Auto-rotation" in the LP behavior settings while the phone was in portrait and is has stayed that way. Apps still follow the phone's auto-rotate setting.
Many thanks Final5K, Slaydog & Marvin for your inputs.
I already use camera 360 on my Desire HD which is good.
As for the simplestreak rom, I will try the 354 build as many people say it is speedy & stable.
With regards to the latest version of launcherpro, it's a definate must have, will get the latest version once my streak arrives.
Cheers to all once again, much appreciated.

Download AutoRotate On/Off Toggle by BH_Lin from the market. Its new but very, very awesome. You can have a widget which can easily be used to lock portrait or landscape.

Huh, the application you mentioned functions like the default auto-rotate option. Nothing more than the other apps in the market. It does not lock the screen to be in Portrait Only.

Well, i've had it installed for 3 or 4 days now and it appears to be 'locked' to portrait, apart from games/apps that require landscape (angry birds or plants vs zombies for example), and with those it reverts to portrait upon closure. I am using Simplestreak ROM 1.0 which also has the lockscreen in portrait.
My main reason for wanting this app was to stop the phone app from rotating as I found this to be massively annoying when i came off the phone, tried to hang up and the finish call button would go leaping around the screen as i pulled the phone away from my ear. It definitely stops that happening.
That's the worst. You always hold it up to your ear horizontally, but your not using the screen! I hate when I go to press a button, and the screen rotates just before my finger makes contact- forcing me to press another button. For a split-second your brain screams NO!, but it's too late, your finger is on a collision course...

You guys are confusing me now, lol.
Should I go for launcherpro or AutoRotate? What's the difference?
As for myself, I simply want the homescreen and every other screen to appear in portrait mode like every other phone, even the menu I would permanently like in portrait mode.
Obviously when gaming, watching movies or going through pictures I would like the screen to auto rotate as normal, not to be stuck on portrait mode.

I have launcherpro and autorotate installed on Simplestreak. No settings tweaked on launcherpro. The screen only rotates when the app is designed as landscape only.
The only problem I have encountered is when I reboot it fixes it in landscape, but I simply have to press the widget to allow rotation, hold it upright to force portrait and press the widget again.

If you want to stay on the stock 354 rom and have portrait lockscreen (that's what I'm on also), do this quick fix. This works with Launcher Pro (my choice) and ADW and will prevent re-draws on every unlock. It's even easier than flashing a rom IMO:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=14356768&postcount=68
I am using the streaklite rom with adw ex launcher. I haven't noticed anything different from how the stock portrait/landscape modes work. Works normally here. Even the lockscreen.
Am I the only one using the Note in landscape mode *only*?
Customized ADW EX launcher to landscape only. Downloaded a paid app from Market that locked everything in landscape, even the got d.... dialer (finally!!).
I really love it that way. Only problem is that I haven't found a lockscreen that works natively in landscape.
Would love if Google and various devs. would consider making apps more landscape friendly.
The whole thing as using a phone (as the Note) in portrait mode doesn't make sense IMO. Just think of how you are watching TV, movies in cinema etc.. - Same with a nice big screen phone as the Note.
EDIT: Oh, and have of course changed the DPI to 240. Again, would love if in the future everything would be a lot smaller than it is today. Going from 240DPI to the standard 320DPI is buck ugly. Way to big. Why not use the screen space a lot better? Like having a 15" laptop running a virtual resolution at 640x480.. Nobody would have that.
Oh well.. Only me that is a landscape fanatic?
Best regards
Surfing websites is NOT always landscape friendly.
Blogs, forums, etc. a vertically much longer than wide.
I dont prefer landscape at all. I dont watch movies on Note.

I am in love with landscape too!! I use my dell streak in landscape fix only, however in that case if you remove auto rotate checkbox then the phone itself fixes in permanent landscape...
For your lockscreen issue....try widget locker a very good lock screen and it supports landscape as well, highly customizable .....
If it helped click thanks!!!!
Hmm.... Well, to each his own. Dell streak is of course set up as a landscape device and devs spent months figuring out how to"fix"it.
So, if you are so inclined, here is how to change the default orientation (including stock lockscreen). http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1084850
Of course, this is for GB only. And oh yeah, car dock mode auto rotates the lockscreen based on sensor. ICS is of course a bit different. AOSP has tablet mode which includes lockscreen rotation built in. You can get the same effect in phone mode with a simple framework edit. See the link in my sig for my CM9 MOD. The latest version has lockscreen rotation including a link to the tutorial I (and Matius44) followed to enable it. That would work on imilka's AOSP rom + but I have no idea about this touchwiz crap we are forced to endure to use the spen suite of apps.
Sure, you COULD just use widget locker or GoLocker autorotate feature... but then why the hell did you post to xda;-) (not a dig on Geo lol)

Fyi, landscape Web browsing on a large form device such as our Note, allows one to read the entire width of a page legibly without zooming in and out. Sure, you can fit a 'whole' page in portrait, and with the incredible resolution of the Note, maybe even read it with a magnifying glass!

Thor of themes LOL! I've been thinking we need a Spiderman and star wars theme around here... But then again, Samsung has a new freaking base every other week.
Oh, and so as not to be completely off topic, I rotate 90 clock wise for landscape. This actually puts the volume keys on the top and right is volume up and left is volume down. (again, not to sound like a broken record, but streak was f-ing backwards to the on screen volume adjustment)

Never used Landscape mode as Portrait is enough for me. Since the Note is already big, I find it quite inconvenient to hold and use it in Landscape. Portrait is the way to go for me.
i love using my note in landscape as well! but my only problem is when it comes to texting i always have to change it to portrait because i use swype and having to swipe through such a big screen is hard
Rotation locker, free from the market could have accomplished the rotation. With¡, and without touchwiz.

Quick text how to:
ADW EX Launcher (any launcher that can change orientation will do)
In launcher settings, set desktop column and rows to 10.
Chose nice icon pack that you like (i have black background and minimalistic white icons)
Set icon size to something preferable.
Get rotation locker and set it to landscape.
If you have like me, use Tasker to set orientation to auto in some preferable apps, like Youtube or S-memo.
Stock up your homescreen with cool widgets and what ever you like. I like not to have a dockbar.
Best regards

bollocks of ten chars
1. Is there currently any custom ROM or app that can tweak the color saturation system-wide? Back when I had a Captivate, most of the AOSP roms had voodoo color that allowed you to tweak color temp, saturation, and RGB values of the AMOLED screen, because it really needed it. The oob saturation of the N7 screen seems like it could use a boost when held next to my One X. I've already applied the PRISM patch but it's not washout that I have a problem with, it is system-wide saturation.
2. Is there a way, probably with a custom ROM, to get the nav bar (I think that's the name, home, back, recents bar) to stay on one side in landscape mode instead of taking up precious vertical screen real estate at the bottom of the screen?
Thanks in advance, and sorry if these have already been answered. It's tough to search in the XDA app.

Maybe some of you know but I didn't know that. If you compare two android phones (can be different but one of them must be stock) colors are different.
Close all tabs in chrome and you see dark screen. AOSP users see dark green color on but stock users see grey on SGS2. And colors are more colorful more live on stock!
How to make colors look like STOCK on AOSP:
Download devil kernel manager on play store
Go to screen tab
Tune MDNIE Scenario value to 4
That's it
