I started this thread for numerous reassons why?
because people dont or cant unlock the bootloader or are scared if their warranty being lost.
as well as this some cant afford the paid method which is the only option for me Aljandrissimo or Omnius/SEtool2 which I dont trust.
I want to know your opinion because if we could do this we can all share the fun of having custom ROM'S and Kernel's which I would love.
I'm sure people with unlocked BL would agree Custom Roms are Beastly Epic and a enjoyable xperiance after all im not having the xperiance from my xperia play (like what i did aha).
I also have created my own Stock Based ROM but its To limited I would carry in with that and maybe if we could bypass BL we can share DooMLords Kernels .
But sadly im not sure the Developers would do this for us
they are to focused on ICX and CM7/9
Which is a shame I would want to see your preferance on this and opnion.
I hope a Kernel specialist is watching this and is thinking about as I can't pay for Unlocking my BL as I am Not 16 (14) and dont have a credit card or bank so no PayPal
Me too. I want to install custom rom but my phone bootloader can't be unlocked. I would appreciate it if someone can help
Me too , I'm really want MIUI or ICS on my Xperia Play can't get that /=
I agree too. But when it comes to just interface, if you know what you're doing, you only need to just root your phone and install CWM Recovery for UOT Themes. As you can tell from my signature, I'm using a rooted R800x model (Verizon) with a locked bootloader, and I'm pretty confident about my phone's look.

EDIT: Once I find out how, I'll try to turn this into a locked R800x rom if you'd like.
I just want to be able to overclock, I don't really care for an ICS rom or CM7/9. Also I heard that Hogwarts(the developer of COLA rom) is talking to someone on creating a module which will allow us to overclock with a locked BL.

That'll be cool! I don't need an overclock but it's another step forward!
I really want to have MIUI or CM7/9 on my Play though. I can wait for a new exploit, I just don't want to have to pay for something to flash a 'free' ROM onto my phone, it just never made sense to me.
I want this simply for overclocking.

Paying to have your phones bootloader unlocked is not a fee the developers are charging you, its because the developers have to buy Setool credits and it costs $25 to buy enough setool credits for that software to unlock your phones bootloader. The developers make no money on that, yet they are doing it for you if you are willing to pay for the credits. Thats why there is the cost to unlock your bootloader.

Okay, that makes sense. I just wish they didn't have to make it so complicated... I remember back when I had the LG Vortex, I could just flash whatever I needed just like that. I'll be getting my first job when I get into college when I work on campus while I study there, I'll definitely pay to unlock then because I KNOW my parent's won't!
I have mine unlocked and it was a godsend. I have been running DooMKernel for a few months now and its awesome. I can overclock up to 2ghz (although I am not that insane I just bump mine to 1.2 just a little pick me up) and it has a touch based clockwork recovery embedded into it so when you first boot up your phone you keep pressing the back button and the recovery pops up, then you can back, wipe, restore, flash custom roms, etc from there. Its golden. Yeah it costs money but ultimately its money well spent. I came from a couple Motorola phones and will never never make that mistake again. Sony (Ericcson) has been awesome with keeping their phones community friendly by aiding the community. Unlike Verzion...... not very pleased with them. Anyway Im done rambling.
What you said is all completely understandable and I do agree about Verizon... I heard that Sony Ericsson is developing a Verizon ICS build as included with the other providers for the March-April update. I just hope it stays that way, so I have something nice until I get to college.
I'm doing that in my Rom

Let me put this as kindly as I can. It's never going to happen.
If you want the Custom stuff, put your pop money away for a few weeks and get an unlock.

I heard a while ago that if you root your droid x wrong/at all you will turn it into a brick and not be able to unlock it in anyway. Is this still true? I want to be sure I didn't pay 150$ for something that I am going to potentially turn useless.
There is always the slight possibility that any phone can be bricked, if you're too concerned about bricking your phone just leave well enough alone. No harm no foul right.
The Z4 root seems pretty fool proof, its mainly when you start doing themes and others hacks that you can really screw things up since you're messing with more files.

its very safe go for it. u r missing out on so much
I haven't heard of anyone bricking their phone by rooting... i used z4root...as long as you follow the directions while themeing your phone or flashing new roms i feel its pretty hard to brick your phone... each dev has instructions for flashing their rom and they seem to be all the same... some might not require you to wipe system as the rom will do that while its installing.. there are even videos on youtube for flashing roms... now if you did brick your phone you would have to sbf your phone and there are instruction on doing that online as well... you just gotta go for it as i think flashing a new rom is well worth it regardless of the rom you flash....

Yes and no... I believe what most people are trying to express here, is there are plenty of benefits to rooting your phone. However, if you truly are not computer/technologically savvy, I would advise you to wait before rooting. Do some reading around on the forums here. I feel like there have been a lot of people lately who have tried to root their phones, and make modifications to their phones that are a little over their head.
While yes, many times there are great instructions to follow so even those who are not super familiar with android or technology can still get by... But with that, many of the modifications involve doing some tasks that can be done (e.g. typing in a command wrong) that can result in damage to your phone.
I don't write this to deter you from wanting to modify your Droid X, don't get me wrong. I simply wish you the best with your modifications and advise you to do some research before jumping in head first.
Good luck, and if you have questions, feel free to ask. There are plenty of people here who are more than happy to help =)

I think most people get in trouble when they really start digging deep into the system files and don't know what they are doing. Flashing roms can be a bit scarry with a locked bootloader like the dx has. I suggest that you read all you can about the subject first, that helped me get comfortable with the whole process before I did it. Now I'm glad I did root. Z4 root is super easy, one touch, no computer needed pm me if you need the file.

Guys, I need some help.
I need to return my EVO Shift to Sprint and need to unroot. I did a search for "unroot" in this forum but couldn't find any clear instructions.
I have Cyanogenmod 7.1 installed (the official one).
Would really appreciate some help. Thanks
Search for the RUU. Run it. You'll go to unrooted stock. I have one on my old SD card if I find the time I'll load it up
Shifted from Outer Space
Or you can flash a sense based rom and take the OTA. That should work too

Flash the PG06IMG.zip file from the shift rookit below:
http://www.goo-inside.me/roms/VICODAN/shift-rootkit.rar
Copy the file to the SD card power off the phone, hold vol+down plus the power button and accept the update. You will lose all data including data on the sd card and will be unrooted on Froyo 2.2
Seems like just running RUU 2.2 is the easiest. I searched for it and got a link to multiupload which doesn't work.
Anyone know another source?

Also going to 3rd party stores makes life easier as well. I took my phone rooted last week and the tech told me to go unroot my phone and bring it back because his DM was there. LOL
Yeah someone I know was having touchscreen issues, with the phone. Told them, your insured, only been a few months since you got it. Take it back in and let them look at it. But first let me Unroot it. She was in a hurry, and took it to Sprint Rooted. Tech knows me, so he called me up. Was not a good situation . If the Manager had been there they would've flagged her account.

My phones not under warrenty anymore. I go to third party stores and I don't care if they know it's rooted or not. As a matter of fact I tell them it's rooted. I've been told by people that sprint doesn't care if you root your phone or not as long as it's not under warrenty. I've also been told by a sprint employee that you can root your phone. There's a law that most people don't know about that protects developers from carriers attacking them with legal issues. Fear I have not.
Just posting my experience of getting a fresh Moto G 16GB that was Tesco purchased - unlocked and to Stock.
I linked to the XDA thread by t-bon3 - which is a great guide.
Here is how it went for me.
First issue that the device is locked to tesco sim cards.
Note: you are not unlocking the bootloader or adding root to the system.
The phone will be exactly as if you bought it from retail, just you got it subsided by Tesco.
I choose these guys to get an unlock code - they seemed professional - I avoid ebay & paypal.
http://www.unlockunit.com/unlock-motorola-moto-g?var=tel
Form filling.......
Phone Model : *Moto G*
Country & Network : *United Kingdom - Tesco Mobile*
IMEI: *XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX*
E-mail: *YourEmail*
I then got 3 Emails.
1: Confirm Order
2: Confirm Payment
3: Unlock code (came 11 minutes after I paid)
There were 2 unlock codes - I put a non-tesco SIM in and was greeted with the prompt - the first code worked.
Then after that I followed this guide to Install the UK Retail firmware
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=47820707
Files From here
http://sbf.droid-developers.org/phone.php?device=14
I used this one
Android 4.3
Blur_Version.14.71.8.falcon_umts.Retail.en.GB
*Retail UK*
407.3 MiB
40FD34F930D9ADD3AB3F65B5A23FCD00
Simple task, enable USB debugging, reboot into fastboot, run script, reboot.
Now just to wait for the Over The Air 4.4.2 update that is due any day for the UK phones.

In this case, repacked means adding the proper Moto fastboot tool, and a .bat file to automate the commands.

Exactly, just does the long winded way from one simple command.
Actually, there is one error in the simple way, if you can call it that, he doesn't say you need to enable usb debugging before you start which might be confusing for noobs.

I wouldn't recommend flashing the full TAR. If you'd like a guarantee to get back, I'll be making separate flashables.
for example i'll just rip apart the tar and make an odin flashable of everything except the bootloader.

Like many rooted users that are contemplating returning the S7 due to locked bootloader, they, like you, retain a flashable rooted device.
I think Samsung just ruined a good thing for this community. I had hoped for a rooted Note 6 one day soon, but losing all hope. Samsung says the carriers wanted locked bootloaders. Sprint and T-Mobile deny that claim. They should get a room and work that out!

What Samsung has done in the past with kernels and recovery is child's play compared to the locked bootloader. It would take a vulnerability exploit or a signed key unlocked bootloader to root that unless Samsung reverses its position. They just don't own mistakes that way. Even if it's a path to destruction, Samsung will march on like a soldier.
I personally think they've come to a place where they can willingly accept the loss of a few that can't do without root. Sad; Sprint and T-Mobile claim Samsung did this. Samsung claims all carriers in US wanted locked bootloaders.

There's not going to be root for the 997 because of sprint locking it down and incrementing arb. The phone is well over two years old so the majority of devs moved on to other platforms long ago and none of the few remaining devs are working on root.

Yeah I understand, but there's lot of people here with the same phone and I'm sure there's a way, maybe with LGUP and UPPERCUT going down to a lower release or using another KDZ from another model very close to it, I'm sure there's something to do instead of trowing it in a garbage can. There a dev here loves challenges and some of them are working on older phone...
Please??? I give 15 US$ by Paypal if someone succeded!!!

You can't downgrade to root because as I stated arb was incremented if you do you'll blow a fuse and be bricked. Also no one is working on root, it's been discussed numerous times on this forum

I don't know what ARB is and when I try the hidden menu, the only thing I got is 4 useless options. If it's not a hardware problem, I'm sure there's one hope somewhere?? If it's hardware, the only way is to put on gargabe can... What Sprint did to brick this phone like this!???
Quick question about the same phone. This phone came from an estate sell, so I did a factory reset. The reset version is Android 8 Security patch July 1 2018. I'm not using it as a phone (no SIM card), but just for Android Auto as media player/GPS.
From what I'm reading, it can't be rooted?
Can the bootloader be unlocked/changed using dirty santa so I can install TWRP, then Lineage 17.1?
There is so much conflicting info on this V20 version.

No, that version of the phone is completely locked down. The only thing you can do on it is factory reset and absolutely nothing else, not even flashing firmware (because that will permanently brick it). If you really want more details on why, you can check my write-up over here (look at most of the bold parts).

Thanks,that is what I feared.
I bought a 2020 Tacoma. The stereo sucks. If you use a USB drive with with thousands of audio files as the source, when you select artist from the menu, it will start at "A" and start playing. Takes forever to find the artist/song . And Toyota decided to pull GPS. You have to download Entune to the stereo, which seems to be incompatible with the 2020. They just threw their hands up and figured everyone will want to use their phone (I don't).
So I bought this phone for $20 so I can leave it the truck at all times to run VLC and Google Maps. Looks like Sprint and Toyota bent us over again.
