Hi,
I have an HD2, and a couple of months ago, I installed android on it.
But recently, it gets annoying... it has robotvoice, the signal strength always drops completely and comes back, and often, the touchscreen just hangs and does nothing...
Now Im think about installing a new version.
But I have some questions.
Oft I read that some builds have a "hacked market" or "black market"... what is that? I dont want "bad" software in my phone...
And, maybe I got a bit paranoid after reading about the HTC Logger and CarrierIQ.... but can one be sure that recent Androidbuilds and/or Mods are free of such things? Is somebody testing this?
(Is the recent CyanogenMod safe concerning this?
And one last, very newbie, question. If I synchronise my contact and my calendar with my gmail account, I can safely install a new version and have all contacts back, right?
Thx.

First Black Market is an app, different from the android market place. It has alot of the apps that are on the android market but all the paid ones are free. Its warez, and that is not allowed on this site.
What you are reading in rom infos is about a hacked market with is just the normal android market usually an old version as it is faster that won't update itself. Or a new version but is hacked to work on a different screen density not usually available with the market. Both of these "hacked" versions are safe to use 100%.
HTC Logger and Carrier IQ are part of the stock kernels when the phone ships and not all carriers use that software, there is no chance any dev of this site would allow such things on our phones.
Second yes if you backup everything with your google account it will all be back as long as you use the same google account with the next rom you use.
Cheers,
Evil.

Hi,
Its me again
I would post in the Hyperdroid thread, but I am not allowed to, so I hope somebody will read it here.
I want to install Hyperdroid, and for that I need the clockworkmod. I already have magdlr 1.13. As far as I see, I should get the 150 mb file for clockworkmod, but all the links in the original thread are dead.... where can I get the appropriate file?
And, does the Hyperdroidmod support other languages?
Thx.

I'm getting pretty fed up now, dates have come and gone still no sign of the official ROM, I've had problems most noteable SMS texts not arriving. It surprises me that there are ROM's around through developers practically one man bands up and running redone multiple times and HTC still haven't realised anything and they are a huge organization. I've got nothing but admiration for those who go down the route of doing it themselves, but being completely new to android I would find this too stressfull.
HTC were is our update and have emailed you and you deny that my problems are software related and I should sent my phone into you for a fix. But others who have updated to the ripped ROM have had these problems solved.
Sorry rant over. Felt good to get it off my chest.
Still waiting, maybe not so patiently.
It's just HTC and there typical crap support... we might get a update at some point but never believe the dates that are talked about on here or anywhere else.
Hold on a moment, arent these unofficial developer ROMs based on leaked versions of HTCs in-development ROMs? Its not as if these one-man-bands conjure them out of thin air..
Even with these unofficial ones, they are hardly plug and play, not easy for the average person to install. I suspect HTC are making a proper update service available, whilst testing testing testing...
I will wait for the official release. Its been released in Singapore already, apparently, so it must be soon. And if you are too impatient, go the unofficial ROM route!
the 2.73.405.5 that is up here IS the official update.
The people who have uploaded it have got it from an internal HTC system that gets the updates released to it a few days before the updates are uploaded to the HTC website for public download.
so, either wait for the update to appear on the HTC website, or download the 2.73.405.5 update and be happy.
either way, you're gonna get the same thing whichever site you download it from!
i couldn't wait any longer so i used the RUU thing and now my LEDs blink, flash and light up like a Christmas tree, lag is gone, all is dandy <3
two important questions:
can you choose languages (german)?
is the contacts app scrolling fluid now? with the initial hero rom the contacts app would stutter all the time when scrolling through the contacts list. its just unsubale that way. is this better after the update?
do you have any 3g connection issues? or any sync issues (gmail, facebook...)
yes,
yes,
no.
ok you just officially convinced me to make the update now!
only problem left: my windows xp has problems recognising my hero...seems to be some driver issues. damn it!
do you have HTC sync installed?
Once you get a bit more used to these things, i would recommend you have a look at some of Paul's Posts (he posts as Modaco). especially the ones to root using his patch, and the one to permanently flash the recovery image and also the roms in zip format.
once that is done, any update that becomes available, or any cooked ROM that is released, just needs to be copied to the phone as an update.zip file and then you can flash it using the recovery image.
it's a bit daunting at first, but you get used to it and begin to know which posters to trust when it comes to the instructions on doing stuff.
On a side note, i wonder if we'll ever see OliNex heading over this way....they would be a fantastic addition to the Android ranks...!
yeah i have htc sync installed. i also searched for the htc hero xp drivers and installed them.
usb connection does work, but htc sync doesn't work. do i need htc sync connection to update the rom or is the usb connection enough?
USB is enough.
the best possible advice i can give you (in my own, not at work opinion...) is not to use HTC sync whatsoever.
I Hate it!
Copy everything into your google account and let it be backed up there. that way if the worst happens and you ever have to have the phone replaced or have to hard reset, you just sign in and everything is back.
saves the hassle of having to install stuff on the PC and get it all connected!
hi,
i tried the RUU update and it works! so there was really no need for htcsync after all.
actually i already use google for everything (mail, contacts, rssreader) but i thought that you need htc sync to access the device for the update.
only at work i need htc sync in order to sync it with outlook calendar items, but at office it works without any problems...
now i'm going to set up the device again, i'm curious to see whether the contacts app is really faster now...
thanks for your help! i will post my impressions in this post later.

Is that really the case? Because the instructions for installing the Modaco ROMs dont seem particularly simple for the average Joe. I find it a little hard to believe that HTC would make it that complex.
Correct me if I am wrong, it happens often...
no, using the RUU version you'll just have to open an .exe and then the install wizard will update the roms. thats it. takes 10 minutes to update the rom.
the other instructions from modaco are for rooted devices, but if you're not interested in rooting the RUU update will do everything for you, so this is the exact same form as htc will publish it.
The RUU version is likely to be what HTC eventually put up on their website. I've not tried it myself, as I used the Modaco version, but I'd guess it's going to be pretty much like the RUUs HTC put up for WinMo, which is going to make the process a bit simpler than Modacos if you haven't already flashed Cyanogens recovery image, but possibly more complex if you have.
Regards,
Dave
Favourite People widget is now actually smooth and usable, i'm loving what happened to my Hero, loved it before, it's amazing now

Indeed, I've come from a touch HD (Blackstone) and the different Roms (ultimatly thanks to OliNex) available was the best thing about the phone, Android/Hero will be something else when it gets as popular- Soon I guess thanks to it being released in the USA.
If i was one of those American's my heart would of sank at the sight of sprints press release, sorry for going off topic but what an ugly device! it has no right to bare the name HERO.
is this a hard reset, like in windows mobile updates?
So, all settings and software are deleted?
I noticed that some apps (mainly paid ones) and my own downloaded apps don't show up in my marketplace (using Froyo). Does anyone know how to fix that or is it something I just need to deal with for now?
This has been explained before. There is a post in the dev section on how to solve this problem.
In fact it was only a few days ago I answered the same question.
Basically its just because of the new version, and the older programs not written with the future in mind, same thing happened when people manually updated other versions, should fix itself, when froyo offciqlly rolls out.
Hi everybody,
I just moved from an iphone 3g (which i had jailbroken) to an incredible thanks to at&t contract finally finishing. Hv rooted the inc on my mac using the unrevoked method. Everything works fine (still have stock eclair 2.1 and sense running). Hv installed a bunch of apps from the market but hv not sideloaded anything yet or uninstalled anything (htc sense etc etc) yet. I would really appreciate some guidance from the community on the following since i am very new to the platform as a whole.
1. I dont want to lose the ability to update to the official froyo release (whenever it happens) so will I have to unroot (if thats even possible) to get the froyo update? If yes, whats the correct way so that I can bookmark that.
2. I want to be able to use the tethering without paying 20$ extra per month to VZ (in fact would probably use USB tethering to my macbook more often than wifi tethering/hotspot, but obviously I would like both! ). How should i do that? Obviously the stock app will just alert verizon, right? Is there another app that will work now that i hv rooted? Any special instructions to follow?
3. Would like to optimize the capability of the device by removing crapware and useless stuff which comes with the phone. Hv not yet even figured out what each app does yet. I will use my inc primarily for entertainment - games, social networking, browsing, streaming music, videos, google voice, true VoIP (not official VZ skype), GPS navigation, tethering (when no wifi) but will be OTA syncing my office exchange email account, contacts, calendar as well to make this a backup phone to my official bberry. Any suggestions on which apps to remove? Also how should I remove them without bricking the phone. Is there a cleaner method?
4. I actually like Sense even though it seems it uses up some memory - any way i can remove the useless parts of Sense (since I wont be using USB sync and I am sure some other stuff in sense is just bloatware) without losing the other features that look great - to be honest the phone looks too plain without sense (nexus 1 looked really naked). I would like to retain the look and feel of the sense ui.
5. How do I get swype on this? I played with it when i was shopping for android phones on the captivate (which unfortunately was on at&t) and I am amazed at how great that was! I badly badly badly badly need that!!
6. Any standard add-ons, apps which you would recommend for my intended usage?
7. Now that I am rooted which post-root apps should i install to make the inc more useful? Any obvious ones which you would recommend?
8. The people sense widget is just too much, anything a bit saner which is like a launchpad but without the screen wastage?
9. In jailbroken iphones, you could install lockinfo which was a spectacular agglomeration of all things (missed calls, voice mails waiting, email msg list, twitter feed, facebook feed, weather, calendar, tasks, sms msgs) in 1 simple scrollable screen. Anything similar in Sense/HTC widgets/App store? Just one glance would tell me everything.
Sorry, since I am new I decided to ask all questions in 1 shot. Obviously dont expect to have all questions answered by 1 person but if the devs/users can point me in the right direction, with links and some comments, I will greatly appreciate it.
Thanks and hoping to be a contributor to the android community sometime soon as I was in the iphone community until i just could not take at&t anymore.
1.yes you need to unroot to recieve otas
2.there is an app incthe market called wifi tether that is free.
3.look in the theme/app sectiom. there is a skinned version there.
4. adb in recovery os the only way to remove crapware
7-8 . there are not many apps for root users lile there was with cydia.
also, there are many widets avaliable in the android market. there is lots of good apps in the market. explore.

No, if you are running the stock rom ou will recieve OTAs. The OTA doesn't magically detect "this phone is rooted."

Sent from my Incredible using XDA App
No. it's also not suggested and is reported to have negative side effects.
One important thing, Install Rom Manager from the market.
With this app you can do a backup of the Rom (stock sense and rooted) you're running now and install others to try, if you don't like them just restore the one you had before and done, you can as many back up as you want.
Also check in the theme section and you'll find lots of themes to make your phone look and work beautiful, this also allows you to get to recovery without having to turnoff your phone and install anything you want from the sd card.
Also, if you don't like some of the crap ware that Sense has, there's a post for removing the apps you don't want on Sense and it tell you which ones are safe to remove.

Appreciate the help everybody! Only thing I am still seeking an answer for is swype on my inc if anybody can guide me.

Thanks! Just realized one more thing. I cant seem to be able to use skype over wifi only. Is this verizon's way of using up my minutes one way or another?
Tried searching but nothing really fit the questions I have.
Flashed my first android build yesterday. Running NexusHD2-FRG83_V1.3_(Froyo 2.2.1).7z on my HD2.
If I want to tweak it I presume I have to use the Nexus One themes apps, and roms correct?
And how do I go about installing them? For example: I want to change the battery indicator and taskbar.
Any help would be appreciated it. Thanks.
TBH, I very rarely install anything that isn't in the market. Also, since Android is Android, it's not generally specific to the device. If it is specific to the build version (1.5, 1.6, 2.1 etc.) then it's down to the developer to state that in the description on the market.
Also, I've never had a problem when installing something that didn't work and then simply uninstalling it. As far as I can tell, Android just works. It's a world away from winmo.
Just play and find out, but the market is definitely your friend.
Wow, talk about confusing, the A7 is a whole new world to me.
I've had computers for years, currently I have two running XP & 7, plus I have two laptops running XP & 7. I understand a lot when it comes to computers, but the A7 is so different.
I've downloaded & printed the User Manual and I have read it several times. I've read numerous posts on this forum and now I'm confused. I feel so dumb. Too many words that I don't understand. I want to learn everything I can about running every aspect of this tablet, but it's like just as I learn one thing, the next time it doesn't work that way.
I need more reading material. Whether it be links to posts, books to read, anything to help me understand what I am doing. I make notes of things I have read so that I will remember what to do next time. Post something to help me, PM me or even email me.
I will be so greatfull for any help given.
Thank you
The user manual you can download on elocity's site is useless because there is a lot of things that were never edited out to match the actual release version of the tablet.
As far as computer knowledge and relating it to the a7 or android in general, windows knowledge will not get you very far. A good working knowledge of Unix/Linux will give you a much better idea of what's going on behind the scenes since android is based on Linux (loosely, in my opinion) but still functions very similarly.
If you have any programming or web design experience, I would recommend downloading the android sdk and do some playing around with simple programs. Also with the sdk you can make a virtual android device to monkey around with without fear of messing up your new $300 toy I use eclipse as my development environment in Linux, not sure what a good windows alternative would be, but the structure of an android app is pretty easy to follow. There are example programs and source available on the android developer site developer.android.com if I remember correctly (same place to get the sdk). And the language itself tends to be pretty similar to writing a Java app.
I've probably missed the mark completely on the information you were trying to find, but if you are anything like me, you'll find hours (years if it gets you going down the Linux/Unix path lol) of obsession with just this info.
Hopefully it gets you on the opensource band wagon (the reason I love Linux/Android)
Wow...where to start? Well, you got that you turn it on and slide the lock to the dot to unlock. Then you are in a "home page". There are 5 of them. there are dots at the top of the screen showing which home page ur on. Usually the center one. Touch the screen and slide one way or the other to move the home pages.
If you touch the square whitish pad at the right of the screen with a bunch of darker squares in it, it takes you to your apps - the programs that do what you want.
If you touch an app it runs. Touch the return arrow just to the right of the screen to close the app and go back. It always takes u back.
You have to "root" the machine to get the good apps. Usually with Dexters mod. This is easy. You download the file, rename it to upgrade.zip, place it on a micro SD card, and go to settings/About Device/System Updates/ then touch update device.
The home button at the right side of the screen always takes you to the center home page. - It DOES NOT close the app you have open at the moment.
you should get an app closer to close all of the un-closed apps for you.
Oh yea, android market place is the app you want to add all of the apps you want.
You get it with Dexters Mod (4.1 right now)
and there is tons more...............
Based on Linux ... now I understand why this is confusing to me. I've never worked with it before, but I understand from fellow users, they like it better than Windows OS.
I've never done any programming or web design, but maybe it's not too late to learn something new.
I thank both of you for your info and appreciate everything you have said.
mrpete2u I really appreciated the details of your instructions. I know I'm a dummy at this, and I'm sure there are more of you guys out there to help.
Thanks

Another newbie jumping in....and trying to figure this out. To "root" the machine do I need to update the firmware from the elocity site or can I jump to Dexters right away. If so, where do I find that?
Thanks for your advice.
your a7 is rooted already with dexters mod or elocity firmware.

look here for Dexter mod forget about the stock rom ....
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=890042
I have now updated to 2.0.0133
Now I need to figure out how to get the market icon so I can start looking for more apps & games. Tried downloading earlier and it keeps telling me that I have downloaded to my phone? I don't have a fancy phone to download to.
Here I am again confused, but what's new about that!!
There is a thread in the device section on adding market to stock rom.
Or you could just run elocitymod by Dexter.
I did run the elocity mod 1.41 and my firmware was updated to 2.0.0133
When I am on market.android's site, they want my phone number so they can download the app to my phone.
I'm trying to download the app to my tablet.
Am I confused or what
Thanks for answering me.

Yes, yes you are lol
For all intents and purposes (as far as Google is concerned at least) your tablet is a phone.
Install market enabler on the a7 and fake a cell provider. The a7 should show up on the Google market website after that.
You didn't install dextermod and then apply eLocity update over it did you? Just want to be sure.
Your laughing at me .... that's ok ... right now I'm so new at this, I really don't care, in fact I am laughing at myself for being so dumb.
I went to dexter's site and downloaded a file called elocitymod1.41 and renamed it to update.zip and that is what I installed.
OK I will install market enabler
Thank you again for helping this dummy .... LOL
From the perceived tone of the post prior to my last one, I thought you were already at the laughing stage. I thought I was just laughing along, sorry for the mix up.
Sounds like you are doing everything right. I just wanted to make sure that we were dealing with a clean install of elocitymod, and not something mixed together by trying to ally another update on top of it.
Needless to say ... I am still confused.
Installed the market enabler, but I am not getting anywhere.
Why I try to install an app I get a message telling me there is no phone attached to this account and they want me to log in with another account. When I try creating a new account, there is no place to give a phone number and I get all those stupid messages again.
Just wondering if I am too dumb, because you all make this seem so easy, that maybe I should give up and figure out other ways to get apps and leave the android market site alone???
Sorry if I have frustration in my voice, but I guess I thought this would be easier.

Why not just use market from the tablet? I wouldn't stress so much about trying to get it to work and remotely install from the web site.
Each time I go to the site, I am on my tablet. Mainly because it has a direct install button and not a download, so I want to be on the tablet to install on it.

So are you hitting the Market icon (opening the Market app) or are you trying to open http://market.android.com/ in the web browser?
