Hi guys,
Am about to purchase a KF tomorrow, but I wanted to go over some things quickly.
I know to use this in Canada, such as amazon prime (which I'm not a member of anyway) I have to have a VPN from the states. If I don't use a VPN from the states, am I still able to use the Kindle, or will it stop me at the registration page? If I have to use a VPN from the US, how hard is it to setup? I share my router with my family, would that cause issues?
Assuming I can avoid the VPN route, I would like to root my Kindle to have access to android marketplace. Once I route it, will I be able to access android marketplace instantly, even if I don't have an american VPN?
And finally, am I able to transfer stuff to kindle, such as books from mediafire that were free, and mp3's without having to go through amazon? Do they have their "desktop manager" for the KF or something?
Sorry for all the questions, been trying to do some research and just wanted clarification,
Thanks, any help/advice is appreciated!
Canadian Kindle Fire user here.
To answer your questions, you can definitely register the Kindle Fire easily out of the box with Amazon. As far as I know, they do not care what IP you come from during the registration process. Once you register, your KF will show up on your Amazon.com page under Manage Your Kindle. So simply put, registration is a breeze.
The KF does not have the ability to connect to a VPN (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1376742) but I have read that a lot of people have been successful with Unblock US (http://unblock-us.com/). As I understand it, they use DNS masking rather than having traffic route through a VPN. I haven't tried it yet but they do have a free trial so there's no risk. I am holding out for a VPN solution because I have already paid for a VPN service. Assuming Unblock Us works, you will have access to Amazon Prime (theoretically) and Netflix US. I do know that Netflix US does check for a US address on your credit card before allowing you to register ... I assume Amazon Prime does the same but your first month is a free trial so there is no need to verify a US address on a credit card as you don't enter it when registering. I would assume that when you go to renew, you will have to find a work around in order to allow Amazon to let you register/pay for Amazon Prime.
I tried sending a PDF to my KF yesterday using the provided email address [email protected] but I have not received it. Not sure why that is ... I have a 2 other Kindles so I know it's not a 'I'm an idiot and don't know how to use the Kindle interface' ... but you can definitely use a USB cable to transfer your content over. Alternatively, you could easily set up a Dropbox account and install the Dropbox apk onto the KF and get content that way.
Let me know if you have any other questions. Everyone in Canada is stumbling their way through this so remember the novel that I wrote for you and pay it forward when you can help a forum member. Cheers

Jayce, thank you so much for the info!
I have some friends who are in the same boat as me, but your info is a huge help and convinced me to purchase the KF.
Will probably send you a PM if I have any questions and will forward your post to anyone who asks a similar question.
Thanks!
Sure thing. No problem but if you have a general question that might benefit the community, feel free to leave it here.
Canadian Kindle
I bought mine a few weeks ago, rooted it, installed Google apps, and basically made it an Android tablet. it works like a charm, GMail, Maps, Market, Calander (synced), Go Launcher, and Titanium BU.
It took some reading (XDA), ADB, and some learning but it works; I still can't buy software from Amazon but I can buy it from Google Market. I can however buy books from Amazon and read them on my Kindle App. Most of the time I download the app onto my Razr, and then send the apk file to my Kindle using Gmail.
All in all I am very happy with it.
Bought the kindle fire, rooted it, love it so far!
The only issue I'm having is that I downloaded the android marketplace app, after rooting it, but it simply says "you must add an account to use this device..." to which I say yes, and then it boots me out back to the home screen.
I tried looking up videos on how to install android marketplace (vender apk, root explorer all installed) but still no luck.
I also grabbed the Go Ex Launcher, but can't figure how to access my videos folder.
Great device though, so glad I picked one up

Try following the steps here:
http://www.kindlefirewire.com/2011/11/17/how-to-install-android-market-on-kindle-fire/
This worked like a charm and assuming you used Super1Click, it should be very easy for you as well.
As far as videos go, I use MX Video and it automatically discovers videos on my SD partition. I load them into my KF using a USB cable.

You will be able to use the KF like any other Android tablet to read email, internet browsing, running android applications and play games. However, without rooting, you have to side install applications. This method is not friendly. To be able to install applications to install from Google Ply Store, you need to root the KF. There are some simple guides available in this XDA forum that are good for you to read to explore deeply the KF as a wonderfully android tablet. Here is a link to one of many simple guides:

Are those methods able to root the latest stock rom?
Thanks.

hi all, new to this forum, figured this place would be the best place to come to get help with my GS5 and some issues i am having with Rooting and trying to get Apps to work.
ok, so i rooted the phone, have SuperSU, checked to make sure it is rooted, says i am, but i can't seem to get the modded google play store to install, or an app i wanted to use to work, this being Game Guardian, its a hex editor, and my legit owned FF5, keep getting the "is your game dead" message when searching for values, and the Modded google play store just won't install at all.
any help with this? thanks to anyone who can.
ok so, the problem was that Game Guardian doesn't work with games i actually own... lol
new problem, got FF4 working, but game guardian throws the error "game dead" no matter what i try, anyone with experience with this app able to help? really wanna just max my chars and enjoy the game...
thanks.
Hey
Have anyone managed to spoof another device on the Nvidia Shield Android TV with a stock rom (rooted?)
So you managed to enable playstore with ALL apps on it ?
Ive tried both Market helper and device spoofer but dosnt seem to work
appriciate help

This works very well. Use a web broweser. I used Nexus 7 and had absolutely no problems.
I tried that but i guess il try nexus 7 then, thanks man
Hello community I try to do some spoofing to use application that blocks the video broadcast tv on Android whereas with a non-tablet. sorry for English
Hi,
Can anyone confirm Market helper works with Leanback Google Play Store? App works and change the device successfully but still can't find stuff in the market that usually I could find on my rooted Fire TV using the same app. This is an annoing issue for me.
Thanks.
Hey guys. Does anyone have a working apk of the DirecTV app for the Nvidia Shield Android TV?
It looks like it has HDMI protection and just fails to stream. Has anyone been able to remove the protection on the .smali file that has it?
What is the exact error that you are receiving? I use to be able sideload a Direct TV apk for either the phone or the tablet but now they have stop working. When it worked fine it was amazing. I was able to watch my subscribed premiums. I think we need to incentivize developers to find a means of allowing functionality through our Nvidia Shield. I will pledge a 300 bounty for the first person that finds a work around. There are many gifted people on this forum and as a whole we can solve this issue.
Any luck with this?
Not sure if it's an HDMI block because if you notice certain channels do work (local NBC works for me as well as ESPN channels). I'm inclined to think the device isn't giving the proper location access to the app thus forcing the error for most channels. Just my 2 cents.
I experimented with a custom ROM yesterday and the DIRECTV app worked great on it. I don't think the app has an HDMI block, I think it's more that the stock rom restricts the necessary permissions or location requests.
What android tv box are you using? Are you using the latest directv version (phone or tablet)? What custom ROM you use?
I have a shield TV and I'm using zulu99's full android marshmellow firmware. There isn't any controller support so you'll have to pair with a mouse/keyboard but pretty much all apps work on it.
Hey guys, I am in the same situation. I have found two other threads on the issue. It is definitely not an HDMI issue or a WiFi issue. Someone has tried to fool the app on what device it's on and it worked but it was too much work. There must be a simpler way to achieve this.

I would love to see someone figure this out. I have tried to tinker, but I am just not smart enough to make it happen. Hopefully one of the many crazy smart dev's will take a look at this sometime. ((fingers crossed))

The Direct TV app now is working I have the same issue but i think it was an ATT issue but its working as of 10/19/16
but not working on my note 4
DirecTV now
Hi, DirecTV Now app is not in my Google play store ! I'm using Nvidia shield TV. Any reason why it's not showing up ..
Thanks
I would love to use the DirecTV Now app on the nVidia Shield too. I extracted the APK from the app I installed on my Pixel XL, and loaded it on the Shield, but I get the following error:
failed to connect to aeg-umsgw.quickplay.com/23.101.201.149 (port443) after 10000ms
Man, life would be good if they'd release this app for the Shield.
Ok, so I was able to extract the Fire TV .apk file and sideload onto my Nvidia Shield TV. I was able to open it and navigate using the standard Shield remote. The only issue I am having is playing live TV content. Sometimes it loaded fine and other times it gives me an error and telling me to Refresh the content. Seems to be very buggy for Android TV. Here is a link to the extracted .apk file. I would like to see what you guys get trying this out.

I got mine working. I did a Sideload APK install from APK Mirror "DIRECTV for Tablets 4.7.015 by DIRECTV, LLC --- September 9, 2016" (select that version)
My problem was that I kept trying to use the Telephone version of this App. I did not know that DirecTv has a Tablet APK version as well that is very similar but has slight variations for older tablets. Let me know if yours works now. I don't need $300, but a $10 Starbucks gift card will do...
*** SINCE I am new to this forum I cant post the link *** Go to the APKMIRROR website and search "Directv" -> then select-> "DIRECTV for Tablets 4.7.015"
Enjoy.

It seems there is some confusion and contusion between the DirecTV apps. The hot new toppic is about the DirecTV NOW service. I ran the search on APKmirror and it seems what you are talking about is the older app for DirecTV satellite service customers.
http://www.apkmirror.com/?s=Directv&post_type=app_release&searchtype=apk
I am referring to the DirecTV app that is for satellite customers, NOT the Now app.
I was able to download the tablet version of the DirecTV app and use it on my Nexus Player running stock 7.1.1 system, but you have to use a mouse; the app is designed for touch input and while you can sort of use the remote, there are a bunch of things you cannot press without using a mouse. Still hoping for some official support at.. using a mouse isn't ideal. Here is the latest apk file: updated 11/24/2016 v. 4.9.010
http://www.filedropper.com/dtv
Resurrecting this old thread. Do you still use the directv app on your shield and is it working ok? Do you have a more recent apk you can share? For anyone reading this I am looking for the DirecTV app NOT the DirecTV Now app. Thank you!
I might as well be a complete noob again because I haven't rooted an Android device since I had an HTC Rezound which had an application on the computer or phone, if I remember where all you did was click on the options and it did everything for you.
I just picked up a NVIDIA Shield TV (2017) yesterday and noticed that it doesn't have the full Google Play Store among other things that I miss.
I was just curious if there is an official way or a way that works to root it now? It would be awesome to add any app/apk that you want from the Google play Store or side loaf but yet still keep the important stuff from the Shield TV, like GeForce NOW. Full Android OS expirence. I've checked out the forums here for the Shield and I'm a little overwhelmed, don't know how to even start or where? If someone wouldn't mind helping me out and getting me started I would greatly appreciate it.

You can side load already out of the box. You'll need to install chainfires sideload launcher to open them. You'll also have problems when updating to New official updates. I personally can find everything I want without root or full Android os.
I can't help you root as I haven't done it yet. Just sharing my opinion.

Thank you for the quick response, I'll try some of the stuff you said. I just want to be able to sideload APK files that I download on my PC as well as to install all apps from the Google Store that currently I can't due to Shield limiting what you can install like Chrome, etc. I'm guessing I just place APK files on a USB drive, plug it into my Shield and use ESexplorer to install? Then some kind of Launcher to open the apps? I read that most sideloaded apks won't show up on the main screen?
