Screensaver?

Is there a way tio get a clock in the screensaver? my just turns totally black.. in my old nokia and SE it was possible to put a clock in there.. i have tried but cant find anything about it.. / Jörgen

It's not a screensaver, that's the screen being turned off to save battery. My guess is that on smaller screens the power drain involved in displaying the clock is quite low as the backlight wasn't on. On the screen on the hero (and pretty much every other colour screen phone brought out in the last 5 years) the screens need to be backlit to show anything and the power drain would be huge.
In short, there might be an application to do it but you are far better off just pressing the on button when you want to see the time.

Really? Why is that?

Modern LCDs all have a backlight and the image you see is obtained by filtering this light through individual switchable filters (these make up the pixels). In the past some screens worked by varying how light is reflected from the screen using these filters but these are inferior to modern lcds. We are now seeing a return to non-backlit screens with the new OLED technology but this is still actively lit at the individual pixel level.
If you don't believe me then take apart a laptop or LCD screen and disconnect the power inverter which is responsible to supplying the power to the backlight. The screen will appear to be completely dark unless you shine a very bright light on it and then you will be able to see the image very faintly. Just don't do what I did and snap the inverter, felt very silly.

Screen dims in Explorer and mail

My screen dims in programs like mail and explorer when i open them. I have it on high and auto off but it dims whenever i go into these programs. The home screen and everything else stays bright. Is there something i am missing.

I'm talking out my ass, but the only thing that would make sense is that it's a "safety measure" because all white screens kill OLED screens, like what the Focus has.

I called Samsung about this issue the other day and was transfered to level 3 tech support.
I have my settings like you where automatic brightness is turned off and is set to High..
He had a Focus with him and I showed him that when you set the theme to light instead of dark (to see the transition).. The home screen is set to bright white but anywhere that you navigate from there (i.e. the application list).. the screen dims.. making it harder to read text.. He saw what i was referring to and agreed with me on the problem. He thought it was something to do with WP7 but i told him I tested the HTC Surround and it remained bright white on any page (I know its a different kind of screen)
He put me on hold and spoke to a product specialist assigned to the Focus and said that was how the phone was designed.. He passed my concern along with hope that we may see a patch that fixes this.
On a positive note, I asked about the amount of RAM in the phone and the specialist confirmed 512MB.

I'm glad for the dimming, personally.. the all white screen would be uncomfortable to look at on the super amoled, imho.

Noticed the dimming right away as well. I read this on Anandtech's WP7 review:
Microsoft mandates three discrete display brightness settings on all phones: low, medium and high, coupled with an automatic brightness mode.

To me, it seems like Samsung tried to artificially inflate battery life by programming dimming conditions into the firmware, while still adhering to Microsoft's front-end mandate.

Tried the other two at&t WP7 phones today and they were much much brighter in email/internet explorer. Would a vanilla copy of WP7 theoretically remove this? Since the home screen doesn't dim, it leads me to believe that it's OS level.

is this only when the white theme is active? or is it when dark is applied as well?

It does it on both.

Just a heads up if you're planning on buying a Focus S (or Focus Flash), they do white-screen dimming as well.

Call button images burned into the the screen?

not sure if anyone else has noticed this but it seems that the call end button, the button to view the dial pad and the button to view speaker options are burned into my screen!!! viewing in most apps it is not noticable but if you open internet explorer and go to a new page without loading a website the images of the buttons and very visiable in a brownish color I have had my focus since it was released in the US, I have also checked my wifes focus and it also has this burned into her screen.. Has anyone else noticed this?

Yes, I have the call tile, message tile, and the little circle/arrow burned into my screen. As you said, it's only visible on light colored screens, but it is visible. Unfortunately, unlike the temporary burn-in on new plasma tvs, this burn-in will not go away.
If you want to see something really bad, go up to the at&t store and check out the Focus that's on display. The Focus at my local at&t store looks horrible. I can't imagine anyone wanting to buy that phone if they saw that display model...

Are you using blue tiles? I heard Blue OLEDs burn out faster than other colors and changed my tiles to green.

I have been using the brown almost exclusively; occasionally I'll go with blue, green, or lime, but the brown just looks the best to me.

thanks for the comment. on to your screen you have the actuall tiles burned into your screen? wow i only have the call end and function buttons burned i think its related to having my display on bright i took it off the automatic.

It's actually not the tile, it's the icon inside the tile that is burned in, but it's only visible on white screens. It's still quite annoying. As soon as the hd7s is out I'm going to compare screens, if the slcd is close to the samoled then i'm jumping ship I think...
and yeah my screen is on bright (not automatic) also. I think my problem is that I have the time out set to 5 minutes, and I never locked it myself

Based on HTC's latest track record with the Desire HD and Inspire 4G, make sure you analyze the viewing angle of the HD7-S. HTC has said it will have a Super LCD but, according to an answer they gave to a customer complaining it wasn't true S-LCD tech, the display will likely be what HTC is calling "Super" LCD...meaning it is their name for the super-sized display...and having nothing to do with true S-LCD tech.
If the viewing angle isn't as good as the iPhone 4 or Focus...or other SAMOLED/AMOLED equipped devices...then it isn't the higher-tech display but just an ordinary non-TFT LCD.

Super AMOLED is a great screen. But the pixel life span is still way short. The Blue pixels are the shortest. The old stats are 2000 to 4000 hours. New information point it around 10000 to 14000 hours. But Samsung didn't release any spec on this.
You should always keep the screen dim and keep it on as short as possible. Reportedly use a red theme will not only preserve blue pixels but also prolong battery life.

No burn in here. I have the phone set to turn off screen within 30 seconds, and have always used Lime colour tiles since it matches the Xbox Live tile.

Just a follow up on this issue, and possible a "what not to do" post. The burn in on my screen is getting worse. On a white screen, I can now see the phone icon, message icon, small circle/arrow, the word calender, and my google mail icon. I have the screen set to time out after 30 seconds, and I have the brightness set to high (not auto).

Should the screen look like this?

My Nexus 4 is under lockdown until Christmas, but I got a chance to have a play with it to make sure everything worked (just incase I had to return it).
I decided to turn the brightness all the way up to see how good the screen was (its GORGEOUS), however, when I was in settings the bottom of the screen is VERY light and it seems to get darker and darker until it gets to the top of the screen.
I turned the Brightness all the way up on my Galaxy Nexus to see of it did the same, and it appears that it does do the same, but not to the same extent as the N4?
Can anyone with a N4 confirm that this is normal behaviour?

Harder to notice on the gnex since that amoled display is rather awful at displaying gray gradients .

Oled problem?

Hi, I moved from OG pixel to pixel 4 and noticed that screen has problem. On 100% on brightness when opening totally black picture screen is not totally turned off and when touching it screen greys out a bit. Is it bug or hardware issue?
Can anyone check it on own device?

I have noticed the following: When screen brightness is 50% or less and I touch the screen such as typing on keyboard, the screen flashes very slightly on every tap. It feels like the screen draws too much power and battery is low. I went to Verizon store to check display unit and it did the same thing. Maybe your issue is similar

yes I have the same situation so do we know is it software problem or hardware? Did you contacted to Google?

I didn't contact Google because the store model had the same thing. I just tried to troubleshoot what could be causing it and seems that when I disable "smooth display" in settings>display and then tried to reproduce the issue by typing on the keyboard and the screen doesn't seem to flicker anymore.
Try to disable the setting on your phone and see. This might be a software issue then.

You are right I disabled smooth display and it stopped flickering but there is one more thing when brightness is on 100% and opening totally black picture I can notice little lightning of the screen in corners it means that pixels are not going off like it should be on oled screens. Could you please check it also?
It could be checked only in the dark daytime it's not noticable

Alright, I found a black image with only a small moon in the middle. Did the test on 100% full brightness but don't see any pixels on the screen. Check my image(attached) and compare.

Yes, of course. I turned off the lights. I have seen issues where some phones had some light seeping through(light bleed) at some edges. Is that what you see?

Even if I enable dark mode and go in settings I can see greyed screen corners.
Picture was taken from og pixel with night sight mode, It's not such noticable from eye

It is difficult to understand anything from the picture. Try some display test apps. Check to see if you have something installed such as 3rd party theme or an app that interferes with the display of your phone. Also if you can compare your phone with the one from the store.

In my country I have no local store and I can't check it. I have nothing installed yet in my phone.
Found amoled screen test picture when openig it in totally dark situation I can see slight grey backgroud at the bottom corners.
I just need someone who can confirm It's only my phones problem or not (

If it is in the corner(s) then it is light bleed. The screen is good and it is just some screen backlight being seen through the frame. At least this is how I understand your situation from my previous experience.
