Friends,
While using the GPS, I realized that the phone was unable to locate the position through GPS and always gave an error “Your location is temporarily unavailable”. This was clearly the issue with Samsung Galaxy 3 GPS. If you are facing such an issue, try this fix.
Open your dialler and key in this number *#*#1472365#*#*. This will open the GPSSetup.
In the GPSSetup, open commands and then under commands, click Get Position.
In the Get Position mode, click Start GPS and the settings will start GPS location fix. This test might continue for long time and once you get the coordinates i.e. latitude, longitudes and altitude the test is complete.
Now your GPS problem should be solved. You can now start using GPS to get your locations.
Enzoyiiii

Its not got anything to do with launcher, that code was for Samsung from for froyo. So definitely, this ain't gonna work on ICS or CM9 or CM7.
Sent from my GT-I5800 using xda premium
No i know, the reason i was asking was so i could be a smart ass and say that with some launchers like launcherpro you can create shortcuts that lead directly to activities instead of having to dial numbers which dont necessarily work on all roms. But i like dialing codes too sometimes..... gives me a kinda James Bond feel....!!! :-D
Sent from my GTI5800 on Kyrillos' ROM v9.5 using xda
Abovementioned codes work on Eclair, on Froyo one have to use *#*#3214789650#*#* (GPSSetup2). There is no hope for gpssetup on gb/ics More codes: http://www.facebook.com/note.php?note_id=148706491847965
So no hopes for me

I can't get it to work, no matter what. I've tried the MSL fix, etc etc. The closes fix I get is about 7~10 blocks away.
Why is it that it won't work in CM7, but works PERFECTLY out of the box in Salvage-Mod?
Try the app "GPS Status and Toolbox" from the market. That got GPS working for me.

Have you tried the nightly that came out after cm7 final? Downloading gps status and clearing gps data might help.

Nightly tonight should have it fixed, I think. I think they're implementing the gps drivers from the dump yesterday.

The open source drivers provided by Qualcomm don't work.
The proprietary drivers were used in CM6, too.
I did the MSL fix to get my GPS working, but ever since then the "active" icon shows in the status bar even when I stop using navigation or maps. I actually think the gps stays active because I experience severe battery drain. Even when I disable the gps the icon stays active. I have to manually reboot for it to finally go away. Grr.
enter the ##gpsclrx# your phone reboots, while still in sense lock your GPS using navigation once it locks on reboot recovery and flash cm7. That's what I was told and it works 100% of the time for me.

The MSL/Sense ROM trick worked for me. I got my instructions from the Android section of Reddit.

Add me onto the msl trick too, gps works fine for me on cm7, I also flashed the latest nightly.

Get "GPS Status & toolbolx" from market and either way go to tools, manage a-gps, hit reset, this will make the icon disappear and it will clear the gps data and get a better lock.

Make a Nandroid of your current CM7 setup.
Boot into recovery and perform a full wipe (or use Calkulin Format ALL zip)
Flash any Sense ROM
Open the Market and download MSL Reader, write down MSL.
Open Dialer/Phone and type ##4118513# (##GPSCLRX#)
When it asks you for a password type in your MSL
Reboot phone
BE OUTSIDE
Turn on GPS and open Maps, allow it to fully lock your location (may take a few minutes, do not just wait for initial lock).
Leave GPS on
Turn off phone, reboot into recovery.
Nandroid restore your CM7 backup

just curious, what do you mean by a complete lock (more notably it taking a few minutes)? i've never had a gps lock take longer than a few seconds while i'm outside. it might be off by a few blocks, but it always locks really quickly (it was really bad while i was in LA last week).
it should also be noted that i have an incredible, not an evo...but after my gps issues last week while on vacation in california (and using my phone a lot for navigation) i've begun the search for a solution, because i really love CM7 otherwise. while in downtown LA i was consistently getting a "lock" that was a few blocks away from where i was, making navigation useless. it also happened a few times on the 60 freeway on the way into the city, where the phone thought i had gotten off the freeway and would start telling me to turn all over the place even though i was still driving along at 70mph on the freeway...
I saw a few people posting this in the cm7 thread. Looks like it's working great for them on the EVO too.

Well gps is always more reliable on the stock rom, so it might be your issue. There's trade offs to using custom roms.

Works perfectly on CM7 nightlies. Locks on instantly and accurately.
After 2 weeks of trial and error this is what finally worked for me.
Download GPS status from the market.
Activate GPS status and see if it gets a lock.
When locked hit the menu button-tools-manage a gps status-then click reset.
Immediately reboot
Open maps -turn on gps and WIFI
That's what worked for me. If I don't have wifi active in the pull down tab my location shows about a mile off, when I activate WIFI i am locked dead center.
There are two other fixes I found at "I can't post links so I spaced out this site" teamroyal net /gps.html but I did not need to use them as this worked for me.
If it works can you repost back here as I'm curious what is working and not working for people.
Does anyone elses galaxy s need rebooting about once a day because after a while launchers reboot when you go to your homescreen and apps always act, like they've been force closed when you go back on then after exiting using the home button?
Also, when I'm using my phone and I get a call it hangs for about 5 seconds before my ringtone comes on. is this normal?

install a cache cleaner - runs daily
Mine is on stock JPJV6 and i don't reboot it neither it does itself no matter how many days it's running. I think last time i restarted it after 9 days to clear the battery stats after full charge.
Try a different kernel. Dark core just didn't play nice for me. Also try one of the ram hacks out there (juwes for example) as I found it made things better regarding the home screen.

I've never had these problems on my phone, and from the replies it seems that very few other people have, so it might be caused by your combination of non-
standard software.
Just as a test, try loading GB 2.3.3. on your phone, in it's standard form, and see if you get the same problems, if you do it's a hardware problem, if you don't it's a problem with your choice of Roms.
Best of luck.

I've got my Samsung Fascinate (Which has notoriously bad gps) to lock extremely fast and accurate (to 4 ft) by using this method..
1. Download the app GPSAids. (*Note: This will Only work for Galaxy S & Nexus Phones)
2. Run the setup and let it do it's thing.
3. Under the program preferences change the custom ntp server to pool.ntp.org.
4. Go outside. Ensure you have a clear view of the sky and both options under your phone location settings are checked (use wireless networks and use gps)
5. Download gps status.
6. Go settings > display and tools. Check the options automatic orientation, show time to fix.
Units and formatting menu
Distance > Foot, Mile
Speed > Mph
Temperature > °Fahrenheit
Gps and Sensors Menu
Sensor filtering > Strong
Main Menu
Tools > Calibrate compass, pitch, and roll.
Manage A gps state > Download
7. Download Gps Booster
*Note: It will say Gps Booster failed, just ignore it. It actually worked.
8. Your gps should lock quickly and show your position within a few feet. If it doesn't, redownload a gps state from gps status, open gps aids, download gps aiding data, click gps status at top, press sync time, and it should lock. Kindly leave some feedback or hit the thanks button if this works for you..

or you can flash a powerwashed rom and not have to mess with any of that
Spending that much time following those steps will definitely get you a GPS lock before you finish them..

It takes all of 5 minutes.. If that. And for those on CM7, without a modified gps.conf, your gps won't lock or be very accurate.

I haven't tried CM 7.1 yet, so I can't give an opinion on that. I just know from personal experience that it's always taken 2-5 minutes for my phone to lock til I tried this, and it won't lock indoors. I guess everyone's hardware is different.

I'm currently on my third Epic and thought I finally got one that wouldn't give me issues (The first kept locking up, the second didn't have a working proximity sensor) but the third turned out to have some crazy GPS issues.
GPS would randomly turn off and say it was trying to connect and stay that way. Even in crystal clear skys when not moving, the GPS would just not work. Sometimes it would work only to lose connection a few minutes later.
I took it into the Sprint store and the only thing they could do for me was just flash the phone back to 2.2.
Is this purely the Gingerbread update not working (when it comes to GPS) or have other people experienced no problems with GPS on stock gingerbread?
Basically I'm debating whether I should call customer service and complain until I get a new one, try the gingerbread update again and hope it works this time, or root and hope the GPS works as well.
Any help is well appreciated.

No need if you have root permissions go into es file manager ( if you have it if not get it) go into your favorites and open the / or the phone icon go to the system file then find the vendor file then go to the bin file and hold the gpsd file there and go into its properties and check this:
