Flashing gen 1 over gen 2 stock? - Acer Iconia A500

Hi, new tablet owner.. I rooted my 3.2.1 a500 but I'm a little confused... Most roms say for gen1 but my stock rom says gen2.. am I able to flash these? If so just kinda curious why development isn't being done on gen2?

Yes you can. While trying to flash gen1 for my a500, by mistake I flashed gen2. Flashed again but this time the correct one.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=21171079#post21171079

my understanding.. is that gen1 + gen2 have to do with OTA updates..if you going to custom ROM, doesn't matter
I noticed Gen2 (usa) ota updates get to our devices about 2-3 weeks before gen1 (europe) gets it.
I would stay with the right region (if u have a choice)

If you have cwm installed you can install what you want. The 'Gen ' I believe has to do with regions.

Iconia A500 3.2 update - Bee with Exclamation sign above.
Im running the update and when the device reboots and as it progresses a honeycomb bee with a triangular sign with an Exclamation mark in it appears...
The installation does not progress any further and i have no idea what to do. I can reset my system but it says update fails and continues on 3.1.
Any ideas/thought/suggestions?

If you care about root and having CWM installed I would not update to stock 3.2 using OTA. Just grab one of the 3.2 updates in the development thread so you can retain root. But if just want plain stock 3.2 and you have CWM installed, you need to revert back to the stock recovery first otherwise it will fail.

Same problem wihout root. Any suggestions what the problem could be?
im thinking if it's because you have a rooted device? I had the same thing. But do not ever update to 3.2 OTA. I would recommend a stock rooted 3.2 in the Development thread. Easy flash. Flying rom.

Just to be clear. You installed a ROM that was made for the GTab, and not made for the A500, or you installed a custom ROM for the A500 based off of the GTab?
I own an A500 but I installed a custom Rom based off the GTab

[GUIDE] How to prepare for ICS upgrade for root users

Look at the following description and choose the right one.
(1) Flash back to stock rom and stock recovery via easy unroot.
(2) Re-root via nachoroot
(3) Install OTA rootkeeper.
(4) Wait for ICS. Call in sick everyday if you have to. Keep mashing the check for update button.
That seems like a lot of pain when the devs are certain to adopt the ICS Asus rom as base to their custom roms.

Because if you rooted via nvflash then you won't be able to do an OTA update even if you have ota rootkeeper. Trust me, I've already tried it all.

Well sure. That might be. But that will take time.
Some people want the ICS update the very second it is out. Reverting to stock allows them to get it the second it is out without waiting for ROM developers to update and retweak their ROMs for a new major Android-version, a process which most likely will take some time.
Besides. I like to know how the stock experience is before going for something different. If stock is good enough, I see no reason to rely on custom ROMs.

It should take only an hour or two to push out a rooted build. Will probably actually get it before being the ota build.

I've heard CWM shouldn't prevent an OTA update from going through. From someone in this forum. Referring personal experience.
That said, I agree about custom firmwares.

I'm confused as to why anyone would say that. OTA updates from asus are implimented through the stock recovery.

The OTA update will not automatically install if CWM is installed like it is the case on a completely stock TF.
Therefore some people adjust the OTA update (remove recovery and add root) and publish this so you can install this with CWM. See developer forum.
The original OTA update also include recovery update (where CWM is installed) and remove root. You can use OTA rootkeeper to avoid loosing root.
Summary:
- root with stock rom and stock recovery will allow OTA update from Asus but you loose root; use OTA rootkeeper to avoid loosing root
- root with stock rom and CWM recovery will not allow OTA update from Asus; use adjusted OTA update and install with CWM (keeps root and CWM)
- custom rom, then no OTA update possible; just wait for update of developer custom rom

Well, stock has gone a long way from back in May. Back then, I went with custom roms because they were more stable and smoother to work with. Recently, I flashed back to stock and have been using it daily. Could not tell the difference between stock and custom rom anymore. Asus, or google, has done a good job at stabilizing and improving the original stock rom.
When ICS comes out, I will at first use stock. Then I will try out custom ICS roms. I'll evaluate them on a regular day to day usage. I don't care much for all the tests that people do. I'm a realistic guy. I believe in reality.

Sorry that just made me laugh. A stock rom being good enough would mean no need for custom roms and so far, not one single device has had one. Not even vanilla rom's from Google themselves.
why go to all this hassle, when its out the devs will release a stock rom that doesnt remove root, then with in about 24/48 hrs dev tweaked roms will appear

Is there a reason for superuser being preinstalled in this repacked WW rom? Kind of defeats the purpose of "stock" doesnt it?

A500 Gen2 not getting ICS OTA (USA)

Anyone else in the US not getting the OTA in their Gen2? Wondering if I just have to go the manual route. I've been out of the loop lately, is there the OTA update available to download and use stock recovery to update?
Thanks,

Do you have the Iconia Update Enhancement installed from the play store?
I was also not getting, talked to the support few minutes back, they suggested factory reset, I said no thanks and did the manual upgrade downloading the zip file from here.
Wife got the update the day it came out. Make sure you have the acer update app. Location Northeast GA. Both hers and mine were gen 2 HC devices.

[Q] How to check version of ZTE blade without ROM

Hi.
My friend "bricked" his ZTE Blade.
We want to try unbrick it, but we must find what version of Blade it really is (I (gen1/gen2, II...).
We can't get also in recovery/FTM/fastboot
Is there any way to do it? (we can't run the pigfish apk....)
Thanks
Ask him what version of android he had on it,
generally speaking if it came with android 2.1 it'll be gen1 and if it came with 2.2 it'll be gen2, there have been reports of users having 2.2 gen1 but 99% of the time you can rely on this. that's why blade checker and ask mr pigfish have to check details in the kernel to establish if it is gen1 or gen2 but considering it is bricked this is what you'll have to go on
OK, thanks, I will ask.
I think that he flashed bad gen version of CM7.
I hope that we can solve it with TPT (phone still boot into green android) but I'm afraid that with flashing bad TPT we can totally brick it...
BTW ZTE Blade gen2 is different from Blade II right?

If he flashed anything above CM7.0.0 and it doesn't boot, he'll have a gen1, I think CM7.0.0 is the only gen1 official CM.
Have you tried booting into recovery? Power on with volume down if I remember correctly. If not try volume up.
Yeah ZTE blade gen2 is different from the Blade 2
