Overclocking - Kindle Fire General

I'm interested in OCing my kindle fire. currently I am on stock 6.2.2 with root. I have firefirefire and TWRP. Is it as simple as flashing an overclocked eternal? Or do I have to flash a whole new rom?
I would prefer not to flash a rom as i'm prime member and like the kindle launcher (for books). for tablet use I am fine with golauncher
if i were to go to cm7, would it be possible to have kindle launcher as well as amazon steaming video. and no sync issues with my amazon account (cloud, streaming, apps, etc) currently i am using voodooota to temp unroot to have steaming enabled

No, no need to flash a new ROM, just the kernal. Take a look at this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1382999. This kernal will work for the stock 6.2.2.

The kernel mentioned in the thread above still has a few bugs (like unintentional deep sleep) so be careful. Since you have TWRP installed, you should make a complete backup of your ROM first. That way, if you don't like the new kernel you install (or even worse, your kindle won't boot with that kernel) you can reinstall the original from your TWRP backup.

I'm gonna wait for a stable of kernal. Currently I'm looking for a launcher with low ram requirements

I can't say that "Go Launcher EX" is the lowest in RAM usage, but whether by design or most likely accident, it almost seems like it was designed specifically for the Kindle Fire. I have never had it FC, and it is very responsive and reliable. The task killer in the app drawer works great, and it is quite configurable. Only the "app shortcuts" seem not to work, though widgets work great. Lots of themes. Neall

The deep sleep issue has been resolved for the pass two weeks, I'm currently running this kernal with no issues.

ive tried a few other launchers with no success. all of them fc on me. the only one that doesn't is golauncher which im currently using

[Q] Which Kernel?

I finally rooted my TF to Prime 1.5. Which custom kernel do you use? Are there advantages to CBCS over Netformer or vice versa?
i have used both and to be honest there is little difference between them for how i use it, however i switched back to clemsyns purely of my own choice as battery seemed better for me however as each TF is set up totally different this may not be the case for you.
try them both and see how you get on just remember to clear cache and dalvik before applying new kernel.
Thanks. I couldn't tell much difference, either, but this is my first Android device & first root of anything, so I wanted to check with someone w/experience.
Using Kernel Manager makes flashing a new kernel a breeze (although I did get stuck in a boot loop when I tried to go back to Roach's kernel). It can be set to auto-clear of the cache & Dalvik, too.
Frankly, you all have made rooting so easy that I can't see why everyone shouldn't do it.
No worries the only thing you will have to worry about now is OFD, obsessive flashing disorder. Rooting is a slippery slope lol, always got to try the latest rom or kernel.
I use Clemsys 1.6 at 1.4 Ghz with interactive governor.
No problem of use, no reboots. Stable.

[ROM][Stock 3.2]][CWM][XXKJ4][rooted + busybox] P7310 WiFi only

Here is a stock 3.2 ROM for P7310 (WiFi) that I built from a system.img and boot.img from P7310XXKJ4(thanks poolguy!). This is good for testing, ROM bases, or for folks that like stock and don't want to flash XXKJ4 with ODIN.
HC 3.2 P7310 XXKJ4
CWM Recovery flashable (system and stock boot.img)
Deodexed
Zipaligned
Rooted + busybox
Added Email.apk from 10.1 ROM
Works great with my v2 kernel for HC 3.2
MD5 ef6dd6a525fda5d5931369b9839cf082
StockHC32_P7310XXKJ4.zip
http://www.multiupload.com/MZ4KY8ZGZ6
As-is...I will provide no support for this stock ROM.
Thank you! Doing a Nandroid backup now and checking this bad boy out!
Edit: Its running great so far. Installed the kernel and OCed to 1.4 (1.5 would shut down half way through the benchmark). 5815 in Antutu. Thanks!
3.2 Not as good as 3.1
Having tried both your modified 3.2 ROM for my GT-P7310
and an unmodified 3.2 version,
I'm VERY disappointed in the results.
In both cases, EVERYTHING on my 8.9 WiFi Tab runs slower.
Superuser problems arose when I tried to run Root Explorer or any
other apps that require SU permission. Updating to SU 3.07
didn't even fix the problems.
Used CWM restore and went back to stock 3.1 (P7310ZSKH4)
with your motley_v1i.zip and everything running fast & smooth again.
I have CPU Max at 1504MHz and Min 216 MHz with Scaling on conservative.

Glenn, after running on this for a couple days I have to agree with you about performance on Samsung's 3.2, although I didn't have any of the SU issues you are reporting. I don't think Samsung has released 3.2 officially for the 8.9, perhaps due to this reason and all the issues they had when rolling out 3.2 for the 10.1. Even though we can get the early update from Samsung using apps like the Check Fus Downloader (where XXKJ4 originated from), I just don't think it is ready for prime time yet. If you look at the Overcome thread, users are expressing the same frustrations with the 3.2 based ROM.
Good news, we have the 3.2 kernel ready to go even though we don't have official kernel source from Samsung.
Bad news, I don't think we have stable 3.2 base yet...at least for the WiFi version...not sure about the 3G model.
I'll probably go back to 3.1 as well and sit tight until we get an official release. Thanks for your observations and comments.

P.S. Forgot to mention that I also tried the V3.2 for 7510 (10.1" WiFi Tab)
which made me thankful that we can reboot into ODIN mode.
What kind of performance issues are we talking about? Mine seems fine. Are those benchmark scores not good? I dont notice any lag that wasnt already there.

One thing to remember about this ROM is that it is deodexed so it will be slow the first time you boot and the first time you run any system applications. After you use stuff once, it will be fast the next time (boot will also only suffer once).
I didn't have any major issues, I just feel that 3.2 on kernel 2a is less fluent than 3.1 on kernel v1i. Stock for stock it seems the same way to me (3.1>3.2), but the overclocked kernel is able to hide performance issues mentioned by some GT8.9 reviews. The difference is very subtle and won't be noticed by most. It probably has something to do with Samsung and their modifications of Android 3.2 and Touchwiz. The benchmarks I ran were the same on 3.1 and 3.2 and I have had no issues with any hardware on either version. In my mind, the issues are very small and unnoticeable by most.
I hope this helps clear things up for you and others that are wondering and experimenting.
Update: I am back on this 3.2 WiFi ROM and don't have any issues. I did two things different this time. First, I wiped data (factory reset). Second, I installed my new updated kernel v2b. While the latter may give some smoothness improvements, it is the former that is likely making the difference. When I did this the first time, I was lazy and didn't wipe data. The ROM install itself wipes cache and dalvik cache, so this was the same for everybody, but the data wipe may have been a wildcard and may have been worse for some due to the settings they had etc.
If you do decide to do this (wipe data and upgrade), you won't lose all your SDCard install zip files, but it will erase system settings (WiFi networks/passwords), email accounts, browser bookmarks, installed apps and their settings. You will boot into a new tab this way and start from scatch. You can use Titanium Backup so you can backup on 3.1 and restore apps quickly. Also, make full CWM backup and you can just go back to 3.1 as it was if you like.
I'm definitely happy and staying on 3.2 now. It sounds like the Overcome ROM is also flying along on 3.2 as well after his last update. Moving onward and upward!

Although I did a complete wipe before installing this one, I still feel 3.1's a bit smoother at landscape and other animations on my tab. I shall wait for another leak hopefully by Christmas. Thanks once more for your efforts
thank you
running 3.2 as well
I noticed slow performance at first which was expected. But then it persisted.
I updated to _motley kernel v2d i think it was. Seems tolerable now.
The huge difference was when i switched to ADW launcher EX. Now its very smooth transitioning from one screen to the other and the application drawer opens nice and smooth. Everything is working as I want it to.
I'm happy with it. :3
Thank you so much!
Btw, is there a better release of the 3.2 rom for the 8.9 tab? Not looking to switch, but I do want to stay informed.

Any idea if there is support for Bootanimation.zip ?
I'd like to modify my boot animation but im not seeing the files in the system media folder. I do see *.qmg (bootsamsung.qmg, batery_charging_##.qmg) which seem to be proprietary format.
I saw another rom that says support for bootanimation.zip and it had me wondering how hard would it be to add that functionality for my tablet.
If any cares to share thought?

I'm still waiting for my P7310 but from what I've seen so far the stock ROM runs /system/bin/samsungani rather than the standard android /system/bin/bootanimation at boot time.
I suspect that all you have to do to enable standard android bootanimations would be to copy /system/bin/bootanimation to /system/bin/samsungani and overwrite the samsungs version.
I will not go into detail on how to create a bootanimation.zip but the most important thing to remember about it is to use an NON-compressed zip file.

How doi I get to ICS?

In December, when I picked up my TF101, I used Razorclaw + CWM to root it. I also found some kind of an update here that I applied that allowed me to overlock the device .. I believe it was a form of kernel patch?
I would like to go to ICS. I need to be rooted after ICS though, we have a VPN client for our SonicWall firewall that requires the OS to be rooted. I would also prefer an ICS port that supports overclocking like my current build .. it's been incredibly useful to clock up in to the 1400s as it makes everything run so much better.
Is it possible to upgrade to the stock ICS, root it easily and patch it to allow for overclocking at this time? If so, could someone direct me to a guide that shows what the easiest way to do this is, since I already have CWM in (although can't remember how to get it to come up on boot .. doh)?
Thanks =)
Wait till Asus fix the problems.
Yea dont install ICS, it would be like pouring water over your PC
It might seem fun at the time, but its really not a good idea
I would say it is a very bad idea. Avoid it. I did it and literally my tablet is unusable now because of
Slow response
Random rebooted
Random no message crash of apps like gmail.
Dead slow,app response
white screen on app loading
It is now embarrassing infront of ipad users.

Ignore the fear mongering posters.
Tons of people are using ICS without issues. But yes, some do experience issues.
Since you have CWM, you can directly flash the pre-rooted stock ICS. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1552303 This is the latest 9.2.1.17 version.
If you want to overclock, you can flash custom ICS ROMs that support overclocking. There's only 2 at the moment, Team EOS and Codename Android.
Frequently updated custom ICS roms such as Team EOS and CM9 tend to be very stable and have fixes that stock ICS doesn't have, so flash a custom ROM instead of the stock ROM if you are concerned about possible issues.
As always, do factory reset + clear cache + clear dalvik cache within CWM before flashing the stock ROM or any custom ROM.
To be safe, I would update your CWM to the latest version here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1213723 before flashing anything.

Terrible advise.
Why tell someone to update to an OS that has literally flooded XDA and other forums, and ASUS's facebook page with people saying their TF is no longer usable ?
For the sake of waiting for a working update, why suggest doing something that could very well turn their TF into a buggy POS ?
There is nothing in ICS that is worth the risk

There are just as many people, probably much much more, who aren't having problems.
Besides, have you tried any custom ROMs? If not, stfu.
I would no say my TF is unusable under ICS.
It works fine, apart from not so random reboots, as it reboots mainly in the morning when I wake it up form the night...
maybe the Sleeping Beauty requires a kiss from the Prince ...
By the way, it used to be really better under HoneyComb, I wish i could have refused that damned firmware upgrade ...
If I were you I'd rather wait as an other poster said for a really proven Stable version from Asus

If you are using one of the better custom ICS roms and still having such bad issues, the problem is you and your apps since those AOSP roms aren't even based on Asus's ICS.
The OP has root and CWM, and wants to overclock. So how was it a bad advice to recommend a custom ICS rom?
Just because you are having issues, doesn't mean everyone else will.
I've never had any issues at all and I just got done testing like 5 different ROMs. No issues whatsoever. Probably because I do it correctly and do a full wipe including format /system before I flash anything.
I've got issues on Stock and I did a full wipe using voldn+power method and this was before I rooted. I also lost sound randomly on Stock, and the custom kernels I still get reboots but my sound for the main part does work.
So, if the OP needs their tablet to work correctly then wait, if it's not that important to them and they don't need for day to day tasks then take a chance, you might get lucky or you might be causing yourself a headache, up to you.

The problem is ASUS and their code.
If you read the OP's actual post, you will see this line
"Is it possible to upgrade to the stock ICS"
And if you want to go even further into it, your line "Probably because I do it correctly and do a full wipe including format /system before I flash anything"
I don't think you can get a cleaner flash than NVFLASH, which is how I always flash my ROMs

Kinda depends on what your really looking for if you just want a fresh look then I would recommend side loading a launcher like go launcher or adw that way you can still make full use of the amazon market and with voodoo root keeper amazon video works fine if you rom your kindle then you can just use the Google android market with launcher you can have both what I do to make use of both is keep a backup of my rooted stock 6.2.1 and flip back and forth via twrp to stock or my favorite rom of the moment by just restoring a backup . Always make a fresh backup so you don't loose changes of apps that occur with one or the other sounds like a hassle but works for me. You may find once you rom your kindle you rarely go back to stock. Make sure you do full wipes when swapping and everything will run smooth. I'm sure that others have ways they work around being able to make full use of both the amazon market and the Google android market but I'm happy with my method and the diversity I get from trying lots of different roms

Most stable custom ROM with kernel?

Hi all. I am a proud owner of a 32gb wifi Nexus 7. While not new to Android, this is my 1st tablet. Love the size, weight and most of all...is android!
My question is, what combination of ROM with kernel would be best? I know there are a lot of things to consider, but I am looking for opinions only. Without talking down certain ROMs and/or kernels, we can share here opinions based on stability, customization and smoothness! I already encounter an issue when I rooted my 2 days brand new N7 rooting it with the Tool kit. Rooted it fast and easy (successfully), but installed TWRP. Me knowing no better, I love and I'm used to CWM, so I installed ROM Manager and CWM. Long story short, when I went to flash one ROM in particular, in recovery, when I formated system, data reset, wiped cache & dalvik, it wiped my sdcard clean. I mean, thats how I flash my Note 2 for a clean install and never had an issue like that. Then, when I tried to get into recovery via fastboot, I couldn't. It was like CWM wasn't there.
Thanks to the Tool Kit, I was able to un root and go back to stock....then rooted again (with TWRP) and finally flashed CM-10 stable. Also flashed faux's 4.1.2 kernel @ 1600. I like what I have so far, but I would like something more. I got the stable CM-10 from the actual CM thread so the ROM is pretty much untouched.
Can anybody please share what ROM and kernel I should try for a bit of stability, power and smothness at the same time? Any inputs and/or advice, will be greatly appreciated!
Try Paranoidandroid as a ROM. And i think the kernel that comes with it is the smoothest i have used with it.

Hi, Wally72...
I don't know if this question can be answered objectively... it all hinges on how you intend to use the device, day to day. If your going to be playing high-octane video games, then a kernel that supports overclocking would be advised... but that will come at a battery life cost. More CPU cycles = battery drain.
For myself, I am currently running PaulOBriens MoDaCo custom ROM (can't post links yet, but Google MoDaCo Nexus7, and you should find it)...
The standard MoDaCo ROM for the N7 doesn't go too far off stock... it just adds some really nice features... AOSP browser (better than Chrome IMHO), expanded powerdown menu, Adobe Flash Player in /system (although Adobe no longer support it, it's still useful to have).
Paul has recently ventured into CyanogenMod territory with CM10.1 unofficial nightlies... which he has stated will be released every Friday.
And this is what I'm running now - MoDaCo CyanogenMod Custom ROM r3 - and in conjunction with Franco's r39 kernel, it's incredibly smooth... and very respectible battery performance as well.
Hope this is of some use...
Rgrds,
Ged.
