This guide is for the situation where your phone is not booting and the three-button combo for getting into download mode is not working for some reason, and you have tried all the other solutions in the FAQ. It won't help you if you can already get into download mode but something else is going wrong with the flashing process, for example you can't get Odin to communicate with the phone.
If the phone's bootloader is still intact, that is you see at least the white Galaxy S/Samsung/AT&T logo or the "PC ! Phone" logo on the screen, you should be able to force it into download mode by connecting a homemade jig that simulates the Samsung "Anyway" field test jig. You can buy these jigs online, or make them using a micro USB plug and a resistor.
If your phone screen is always black, that is it does not display the white Galaxy S/Samsung/AT&T logo when you switch it on, then sorry, this jig will not help you.

If you don't want to buy a pre-made jig, you can build one yourself from a few parts. You will need:
1. a micro USB plug that you can solder onto. If you are not confident with soldering or you just want a tidy solution, buy this micro USB breakout board from Sparkfun.
Otherwise, get a cheap micro USB cable and cut the sleeving off the plug with a sharp knife. You cannot just wire onto the cable because this jig uses a normally-unused pin (pin 4) of the micro USB plug which will not be connected to the cable.
2. a 301k resistor. You can buy one from Digikey, or make one up by joining several resistors together in series, for example 3x100k and 1x1k. The resistor value does need to be fairly accurate (I would guess within 1% of 301k) to trigger download mode. 300K seems to work for everyone so far.
Procedure:
1. Solder the resistor across pins 4 and 5 of the micro USB plug. Do not do this with the plug plugged in to the phone as the heat could damage the phone's USB socket. The pins are shown in this diagram ("Micro-B"). On the Sparkfun micro USB breakout board they are labelled "ID" (pin 4) and "GND" (pin 5). When the plug is plugged in to the phone they will be the pins closest to the headphone socket.
2. Make sure the phone is fully switched off by pulling the battery, waiting 5 minutes, then replacing the battery. Do not switch the phone on.
3. Connect the rigged USB plug to the phone. Try not to touch the pins on the back of the plug or the resistor(s) as you are plugging it in, as your skin resistance could affect the resistor value seen by the phone. You do not need to press the power button. After a few seconds the phone should go into download mode.
4. Disconnect the rigged USB plug and connect a regular USB cable from your PC to the phone, then you should be able to flash using Odin.

Hi, anyone have pictures of the cable with the resistor soldered? I am just unsure where to solder it, is it on the micro usb cable side or the standard usb (on which end of the cable?) and which part of the cable do you need to cut open? (i heard there is a pin/wire that usually isn't used?)
Also, if i decided to go with the breakout board, i would only have to get the board+301k resistor plugged in the 4 and 5 pin and plug it in the galaxy and would boot in download mode?

Only the micro USB plug has 5 pins (regular USB plug has 4) so it has to be the micro USB plug. You have to cut the sleeving (insulation) right off the plug. You can disconnect the cable from the plug or leave it attached, but don't plug the other end (the regular USB end) into anything.

Tried it, worked once. now phone not doing anything. no lights or boot screen......

Were you able to flash it after it went into download mode? Did you try pulling the battery for a while?
Thanks for your reply. I got it working by your suggestion. Seen many others saying leave the battery out for a while and also seen peeps saying do the 3buttonbootwhile inserting the battery.
As my home made jig was soldered with the pins out of the plug I wiggled it/them about in the socket to ensure a connection was made, then I inserted the battery.
Panic over. Flashed JP1 with 512. not been on for long so cant confirm all is working but looks promising.
I am putting this gadget in a !!!!!!S.A.F.E!!!!!! place.
Also will be available for borrowing in the S/SE UK if anyone is interested.
Im gonna leave playing firmware for while as my heart cant take much more at the mo

Haha i have a soldering iron how hrd do ya rekon it will be to make this thing do u rekon it wil boot a non 3 button download on black screen of death ph-!-pc into download mode soo i can get a stick rom back on it i realy miss my galaxy this xperia x10 cost me more but nothing the same haha

Ill see what i can do when i get home. The hardest bit was to make sure the soldered tops of the pins dont touch. Had to redo them a few times. Resistors got hot too but as it worked im confident i didnt bust them.

Thanks everyone who helped solve this problem. I have a i9000 and flashed it with the captivate rom. I could not charge the phone so I tried to reflash with original software, I used the 803 pit file. It stopped and i waited for about 10 minutes and disconnected the phone and I got the screen of death.
I did this last week and was going to take it to Samsung after the Froyo upgrade came live and I was going to say that it happened when I tried to upgrade.
Guess what I made this USB factory jig and I was so happy that it went into download mode. This made me so happy many thanks and i will wait until the official upgrade comes.
I used a old nokia USB connector stripped the plastic off and bought a 300k resistor from Jaycar for 45 cents and this must be the best 45 cents I have ever spent.

I have a Samsung Vibrant T959 TMobile US with 2.1-update1, Baseband T959UVJI6.
The battery is fully charged, it registers in the phone as fully charged 100%, but when I hit the power button I get a progess wheel that gets stuck, then the phone just turns off. It never gets passed that wheel, it only displays for a second then dies.
However, when I plug in the USB and hit the power button, it comes right up like it should. Then I can unplug the usb and use the phone just fine. Its almost as if I need to jump-start the phone with a power source.
I have reset the phone, even re-flashed the stock firmware using Odin. Same results. I have even swapped batteries with a buddy just to see if that was the case, but I still got the same results.
Any advice or suggestions is GREATLY appreciated. Thanks Very Much In Advance!

Well, that is new to me...
I'll preface with, I have no clue how/why that is happening. But, this is what I would do:
1 - If really opposed to rooting, I'd call T-Mo / Samsung and get a replacement.
2 - If I liked my phone and wanted to make it better, I'd root it and flash a custom ROM. It likely would take care of the issue, as it clearly is not a hardware thing (well, I say clearly).
Worst case with #2, ODIN back to stock and then do option 1.

also it says "USB connected" even when cable is unplugged? I had similar problem.. I tried everything, flashing, changing batteries.. none of that was useful. Then I find some post on some forum that says it might be corrosion, so i scratched my USB with thin wire and everything worked fine, but also scratching USB I was doing one more thing. In my opinion, I think that it's not corrosion. I think that USB is slightly bent (middle part of it), try to bent it in other direction, possible that it's too close to edge. That solved my problem. Tell me if this helpful for you, sorry about my english

i think i can get what you are saying, cleaning the usb port on the phone right??
BUT how does this affect turning the phone on?? if usb port is rusty, it will only affect charging, not turning the power on?
I experienced this identical issue last fall -- the USB would always say it was connected, wouldn't startup unless connected to actual USB, but otherwise worked fine.
Take your phone apart and look at the solder joints on your microUSB port... mine all had cracks in them or had broken free. I re-flowed the solder while holding the port down and it resolved my issues. (put on some flux, and run a hot soldering iron across the joints, clean up... it's not very difficult. just be sure you don't short out any of the pins.) I also added additional solder to the four points that just hold the mircoUSB to the circuit board. It's been rock solid since

See if there is a TV or electronic repair place still in business in your area. Or post an ad on CL asking someone with knowledge and skill to do it. Be careful they aren't an idiot just wanting 20 bucks and happen to own a soldering iron.

you could see if Cell Phone Repair/ is near you and describe to them what you want to do.
I would go through these guys they are top notch helped me when i soft bricked my wife's phone. He even convinced me that i could fix it myself when i was ready to send it to them for a jtag.
They can replace the usb plug if thats the issue.

No my stock battery is charging and i did buy a separate battery. same issue.
Ok so the USB port doesnt charge or show up on the computer, it was working then i had to bend the cable to certain angles for it to work then it stopped working completely is it possible to fix this?

Solution: Needs soldering
Probably not doable so just use a main battery charger and then use Dropbox for file transfers.
Verify that it isn't just the cable. Most of my cables have suffered from my wife walking off with the phone still attached. Had to find a really cheap source locally, fast
[EDIT]Some people may suggest using a dental tool, toothpick or strong pin to attempt a repair. If you do this, be sure to remove the battery before, just to ensure you don't short the pins and ruin your phone.
what do you mean toothpick fix how does that work?

Remove battery, then with a toothpick(doesn't conduct electricity), carefully clean out the usb port of the phone. you'd be amazed at the stuff that can lurk in there, fluff, potatoes etc.
did you have to bend the cable at the phone end or the middle, if middle it is more likely to be your cable that is duff.
If you get a new cable make sure it is a data cable (4 wires), not a charging one (only 2 wires)

This depends where you are in the world, in the UK there is a small oufit in South Wales that repairs the USB port for about £20 (google is your friend) but elsewhere I have no idea
Hello everyone,
Since a few days my phone doesn't charge unless I hold the cable up and in the left or right corner of the port.
If I just stick it in, it doesn't connect/charge at all. And sometimes it says it's charging, but it isn't at all (or it's losing more power than it's receiving because it doesn't have good contact with the port).
Is there any fix to this or does anyone else have this problem?
It is NOT a problem with my micro-USB cable, I tried many, they all act the same.

You have to replace your USB port, there's no doubt about, unfortunately!:crying:
Edit: there's a little chance to solve this by cleaning up your USB port...
i had this and it turned out to be dirt ground into the bottom of the USB port. A thin piece of wire from a tie wrap sorted it.
(of course, usually it IS a faulty USB port)

Well guys, I tried cleaning. A layer of dust came of so I got excited, but it didn't work.
There also is way too much play with the cable when it's in, so yeah.
How much is that port change going to cost me?
from what I've read its not so much the price as the difficulty, , there are loads of stories of repair shops screwing it up. If you're a dab hand with a soldering iron, give it a go, or if you go to a repair shop, get down in writing what they are gonna do if they screw it up.
Yet again a good advice!
I wouldn't suggest to do it your self unless you're a soldering master: as samuel suggested there are (so called) profesionals failing to do this, just because it's tricky enough to get the job done the right way.:fingers-crossed:
Sometimes it is possible to resolve by tightening up the connector in a fashion that promotes the contact of the female to male contacts.
Done one dismantled once as easy to work on connector, basically I pushed the shorter edge in just slightly & with CARE on the female socket in the area over the contact plate thus forcing the male plug to push tighter against the contacts, also tweaked the to plug retention lugs so plug clips tightly.
Worth trying as if lucky can be a cheap easy solution & has worked fine on one I did but as only done the 1 I have no idea if it going to work for majority of worn plugs :-S
Replacing board socket is tricky & not that cheap normally as a good tech knows it a not liked or easy repair ... good luck

May take couple of adjustment to get it good & best do a little at a time.
Will only work if is contact issue between plugs, if issue is broken contact leg or poor connector leg solder joint to mainboard then no benefit.
Post back if get it working ...

Sure thing! I have one question, though. How do I correctly open up the device without damaging it (too much)?
Torx screwdriver and a thin credit card, there break down videos on youtube.
As above really, do your homework on stripdown & take a lot of care, back cover is easy if done right, plectrum is useful plastic tool for prying things apart or get hold of decent plastic opening tools, credit card can be used but too thick really.
i bought my tab like 1 month ago and in the second day i bought it my cat droped it down from the desk to the floor breaking the digitizer i gave it to the company to replace it and i waited 1 month and they told me that they coudn't find the replacement part when i got home i but it to charge but nothing happent called them asked them if they had opend it nope they havn't then i opend it i found the usb power cable was cutt off if any one has picture on how it was or has the layout of the cable to the micro usb could u please show it to me so i can fix it and i can send pictures so other need to open and fix it know how thanks

i bought another ribbon cable with 22 pins and while soldering it to the board of the usb the solder on it made bridges in some places and other places the solder came out it and dosn't adhere to the board any more so i am asking for the layout of the board so i can directly solder the ribbon cable to the micro usb pins

all i want to say is that inside the tab the ribbon cable connecting from the micro usb to the board was cut off and it must be soldered to the micro usb pins i need to know which of them is the data + and data - and the ground i already know the vcc and i think i got the ground right other than that i am in total mess thanks for replaying and srry for my english

not a single clue they are and if they had good guys that can fix it in egypt i have no proplem the thing is i had it only for 1 day frastration has got into me
/If/ (and that's a big if) it's a single layer board (which I really doubt) you can follow the traces from the pads to whatever. Else, I doubt you'll be able to get it fixed.
