It is like the bios.

Consider it the main executable of the operating system.

I figure there's a much better explanation out there than I can possibly come up with. I can't yet post external links, but I strongly suggest you go to wikipedia.com and search for "Kernel (computing)" for a good overview.

Advice for someone who wants to start romming

I kinda want to get into developing, but I don't know where to start or how to start. I want to make a personal one until I get some knowledge in case something makes a booboo. Also kinda looking to make a kernal.

[Viper ROM] DK17 by BThomas22x
Ok man, if I were you I would play around with a linux box to get to know linux commands, then I would play with modding the kernel on that linux computer. I recommend this so you don't build a rom with a how to and. Then put it on your phone and end up with a brick.

In the near future I'm going to buy a new hard drive for my desktop computer and will install windows 7 and linux(Ubuntu the newest version) so I can duel boot. Is there a suggested linux OS?
Now before you ask "why do you need a new hard drive?" Well that is because somehow I lost it, dont ask me how ha.
I shall try my best to learn!
Can't start until I replace my mobo; but should be done within the next week and a half

First things to do with new zoom.

Hello guys and gals. I'm excited to get my zoom in the mail tomorrow from verizon. So I'm reading up on these forums to understand where everyone is at. I'm asking if any one would would he willing to give a quick check list of first things I should do when I get it. Then I can do some research based on your feed back and get it all set up. Thanks.

Download flash player from the market , then set your browser to on demand in the settings. Get feedly for your google reader or pulse, but I prefer feedly as it's much snapier. Download plume for tablet and friend caster for tablets.

One click is to much steps(irony right?)....
Do the catch recovery before reboot method which is really simple and easy. You get root and recovery at the same time.

I used this method, quick and easy.
First thing, right out of the box, root that puppy and install the latest Tiamat ROM.

WiFi only version. Using verizon zoom. I gather that means its The 3g version people are talking about. I'm browsing the developers section still.

Play with your xoom for a while then this. I would install the tiamat rom but I don't want to wipe my xoom.
I've decided to skip roms and tiamat or whatever. Looking at threads some are WiFi version only. Then some are different firmware version. I just want stock Verizon with whatever current version its at instructions. It's just to big of a mess for me to spend time digging through literally hundreds of posts researching on what should be closed threads restarted with fresh instructions. Not 4 month old threads. I'll just root adb, use setcpu, and wait for 3.2 uupdate. Then ill join in since ill know where other people are starting from.
It really is a mess. With my Droid x it was simple. A few ways to gain root and all the Roms nicely laid out ripe for the picking. Instruction clearly labled if you have firmware xxx do this, xxy do this. No wonder people are afraid to root. I am, now.

Ok I can't quit that easy. Looked at xoomforums. I think my whole problem was forum layout. Viewing this forum on their premium app jumbled everything together. Seeing everything laid out rom, kernels, ect, much easier. I'll go with launchpad 1.3 then try tiamat. At least I don't feel lost. As long I'm not browsing through their app.

Multi-booting

Just wondering if anyone has tried this or a similar method for multi-booting on the atrix, since bootmanager doesn't work.

Seems like it should work as it is linux based and fairly simple..
Questions go in q&a. No I haven't tried it.
Sent from my MB860 using xda premium
Posted it here because it may require some modification to work with the atrix. I was going to take a look at it more and try it but didn't have time. Maybe after new years

ICS?

What happened to the ics thread?

This is the ICS thread I had been reading started by MattCrystal (a continuation of Jaybob413's ICS):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1542639
I think it was closed due to trolling or something, but I didn't really get what was going on tbh. Other than that, I'm not aware of much more going on as far as ICS goes.
Don't ask. I will open it when I feel like it. Nuff said.

Wow, that wasn't rude at all.
Didn't mean anything bad when I said that. I know it's none of my business, which is why I haven't inquired as to what was going on after I saw it was closed, I was just letting him know what I know, which isn't much.

ok. I disagree but ok.
looking at the thread most would realize something happened... so why inquire about it? Curiousity only brings out more trouble.

Patience guys. ICS isn't complete in many devices and I take stuff from everywhere so the more OEM ICS releases I find the better.

The only did that because cm was including the gapps inside if the ROM, which unlike Android, are closed source. So, Google told them to stop that, and make it a separate zip.
On a separate note, is it possible to flash back to Matt's version from ajrtty's? I can't hold a phone conversation with his, it drops when it didn't on cm7.

Because device doesn't catch 3g where others devices (sgs3, sgs3 mini, nexus n7 3g, zte mf30 3g-wifi router) catch.

I don't know, and when you question them, they get seriously bent out of shape. I don't know if anyone has ever done tech work on a phone or on a a forum, in order to get an accurate fix/answer the tech must ask what you have done to get where they were, and so on, also accurate information would aide in a quick fix. It is important.
