[Q] Rooting without external SD card - Acer Iconia A500

I've had my a500 for a while now and thought i would have a go at rooting it (currently own a rooted HP TP and a SGS). . .
But obviously im wanting to do all my homework before plunging in (im sure like others, there have been some close calls and tense moments).
Unfortunately the external sd card slot of my A500 doesnt work. . im not sure why, but every time i insert an sd card in it wont "click" in.. it just keeps springing back out. .
anyways, so i've had a look at this post:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1276227
and worked out that i can use Method 1 which doesnt require an external sd card. . .this will enable me to get back down to 3.0.1 after which i can run Iconiaroot and then Acer Recovery Installer from the market.
My question is, will not having an external sd card prevent me from anything further? Other than the obvious storage. . .
I'm presuming that after rooting i can transfer a new ROM to the internal sd storage via usb or straight download and flash via CWM?

Yes, latest recovery (1.7.1) from thor supports flashing from internal memory. But in order to update the one that is installed with ACER Recovery Installer from Market (1. 3.4) you still need a sd card or a USB drive. Try if CWM from the market can update itself with the use of a USB drive. If that doesn't work the only other way to install the latest recovery on a rooted tab without sd card would be with ADB and terminal with is not such a big headache after all. Read instructions on tegraowners in the recovery section.
As for the reverting, you can do exactly as you have planned or you can use timmyDean 's method which will flash directly a rooted stock 3.2.1 ROM - haven't tried it myself but seems more elegant He still uses the euu tool but replaced the 3.0.1 image with a rooted stock 3.2.1 which will save you some time and efforts.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1307539

cool. .thanks for that. . that's very helpful.
one another question. . .if i did install via the ACER recovery installer, would i not be able to update CWM via ROM Manager? (i.e. without the need for sd card or USB altogether?)

Rooted 3.1 UK WiFi Xoom can't access SD Card

I've just bought a second hand (like-new) WiFI only Xoom. It was pre-rooted when I bought it. It's running 3.1 and has Clockwork Recovery Mod 4.0.0.4 installed. The issue is it doesn't have access to the SD Card as 3.2 was never installed. Obviously I'd like to access the SD Card but am stuck as to what to do next.
I'm not completely new to rooting (CyanogenMod 7.1 on HTC DHD) but I'm far from an expert. I'm stuck in the loop that to install anything (Tiamat 2.1 etc) I need access to the SD Card but to get access I need to install something (a Kernel maybe?). I've searched for a solution on here but any 'solution' is just so heavy on the detail that it fries my brain. Is there any simple/straightforward method of achieving what I'd like to achieve?........or is there anyone out there who has a clue where I go from here?
If I were you I would flash the original stock rom from here http://developer.motorola.com/products/software/ and then apply the updates. After updating to 3.2 you can then root your xoom using this method http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1249798.
All you need to do is to install the solarnz CWM recovery R4c v 3.2.0.0 which has been specially developed for the Xoom to access the external sdcard for flashing, nandroid backups, etc. You'll find it here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1074979
You can also do things in the order DroidVPN suggested, above.

[Q] Newbie Question Regarding the ICS Leak

Hey guys, I'm new to XDA and I have a few questions needed to be answered if you don't mind .
So an "official" ICS leak came out not too long ago, and tonight I tried installing it on my a500. By "it" I mean the stock leak for unrooted devices. Problem is, it's not working.
Long story short, I Googled like crazy looking for answers to these questions, and I found no specific answers anywhere from Iconia users, only by people with Droid phones.
I need to know the answers for
1) Can I install the stock version ICS from my internal SD card? If so, how?
2) How do I do this without rooting my device?
3) After renaming the download to "update.zip", as some have said, do I first extract the contents then place them in a folder called update.zip, or leave it as is and rename the large file?
In the end, I renamed the file to "Update.zip" without extraction, then reboot my device in recovery mode. The green Droid came on, then a warning sign, and nothing happened. How do I boot the ICS?
Sorry if this seems like a lot, I barely know any of the technical aspects of this stuff!
must be on externel SD with stock recovery.
same thing happend to me. I found out that my pc named the zip update.zip.zip, i used file explore on my 500 and took of the extra .zip and flashed it. And it worked perfectly.
0) You shouldn't have messed with this without first understand exactly what and how you do it. There's a really BIG STOP sign in the thread. Read the thread first to avoid bricking your device. Everything is here, so you don't have to "google like crazy".
To your questions:
1) No. You need an external SD for your stock recovery to flash the update.zip
2) Copy update.zip to the ROOT of your external SD card, power off, then power on, while holding Volume DOWN key
3) You should not extract the archive.
About root - it's a nice thingy - you are able to install a custom recovery in order to BACKUP your current firmware. Then you can flash one of the 4 custom ICS ROMs that will keep your recovery safe and not overwrite it. Actually you can flash very easily any custom a500 ROM with a custom recovery.
Now, try to flash again by using an external SD, if it still doesn't boot, try to hard reset the device (tutorial on how to hard reset - in my signature - in the revert to 3.0.1 thread)
If it still doesn't boot, read this thread on how to recover your tab:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1516012
Good luck.

The above could not have been said any better by anyone. EXACT TRUTH.
i just want to add this is a leak for the a500 . I do not think i would call it official. Also Remember Its yet to be known of the procedure you will have to fallow to accept the RELEASE IF I C S from acer in April (when they say anyway)
Thou from the past i can nearly guarantee you there will be a way. But could require you to downgrade root and flash one of the many ics cwm roms..as in the post above mine signature

Thanks! This all makes sense. However, there remains something unclear to me. If I have to use an external SD to boot a leaked ROM, how/where does the OTA update install from on my internal sd card? Can't I just place this ROM where the OTA usually loads from and run recovery after that? Thanks in advance

The way you can flash it yourself (stock recovery: Vol down + power) requires an external SD. You don't have access to your internal storage by using stock recovery and there's no "key combo" you can use to do that. Once you install custom recovery, you'll be able to flash from Internal memory as well (thor's does, still haven't used RA recovery and don't know about it).
...But in order to install custom recovery, you need root. Custom recovery allows you to make full backups of your currently running FW + app data. If you're still on Honeycomb I recommend you get an external SD and go for the method 2 downgrade procedure and root it or go for timmyDean's procedure that installs rooted stock 3.2.1 ROM on your device (says it does need an external SD so it might be your choice), then install CWM and voila - you're in control and you can wipe your tab and install whatever cusom ROM you like....and you backup first of course
If you don't feel like messing with your tab's system, then wait a little more for ACER to release ICS OTA update.

[Q] Problems on GT-i9505

Dear all,
I need your help on solving a problem I am having on my GT-i9505.
Yesterday I have tried to root the device with CF-Auto-Root-jflte-jfltexx-gti9505, and it worked fine until I noticed that it was somehow very slow on phone start.
This slowdown problem was not caused by the root process because I have noticed it even before the root process.
In order to try to solve it, I have installed the CWF i9505-cwm-recovery-6.0.3.2-4, and made a backup of the system before make a full system restore (wipe data/factory reset) via CWF.
After that, the system did not started and stays on a boot loop.
Accessed the CWF again and restored the backup, but the problem remains.
After all this process, I get totally lost and tried several solutions and none of them worked.
At this moment I can only access "download mode" and CWM based recovery.
Since I am already lost, and really do not know where to go next, I ask you help on how can I solve this problem and have the phone working again.
The only data I have about the phone:
MODEL: GT-I9505
I9505XXUEMJ5 / I9505ZWAXST
I know this is an international model.
I think on downloading the stock firmware from samsung (4.2.2 or 4.3) no not know which one is advisable, but before that I really need to know if there any additional solution because I don´t even know if this will solve the problem.
Another problem is the hotfile hosting, since I connection is very unstable and will take some time to download the file.
Anyone can help me please?
Thank you in advance
Best regards
Paulo Matos
Since you already have CWM installed you may aswell download a new rom and copy it an SD card. install from recovery.

Thank you simondo12.
Do you mean, download a stock firmware from samsung for this especific model and install it from sd card?
If not, what file do you advise for my model?
Since I am unable to access the phone via android, I have tried to access the sd card from CWF. What I noticed:
- I can access the external sd card from the pc, but I cannot access the internal sd card from the pc.
- I cannot access the external sd card directly from CWF (perhaps because of it's size since it´s a 64GB), but I have access to internal sd card
Even if I copy the file to the external sd card, I will be unable to install it from CWF because I have no access to the external sd card (error on mounting external sd card). Is it the size of it?
I am trying to download the new firmware (4.3) from samsung for my model and will try to install via odin. Will I require to install the attachment that says "kernel file"? This process will take lots of time because I have an unstable internet connection for downloading via hotfile and uploaded file servers.
The problem is that I do not know if it will work because the phone is rooted and have cwf installed.
Thank you very much
Paulo
since its a 64GB have formatted it in exfat? if so then CWM may not recognize it. I would try installing Philz recovery if you are using standard CWM see if it will recognise the card. Do you have another SD card you could try?
There's not really much point in flashing a new firmware in odin if you have cwm installed. Just copy custom rom over to an SD card.

Hi symondo12,
Thank you once again.
I have alredy found the Philz thread and found a gt-i9505 version and instructions to install both from sd and from odin.
I will try and see what happens.
Regardless the custom rom, since my galaxy s4 was on 4.3, will I be abble to downgrade? Ask you that because I do not know if there is a custom rom for gt-i9505 on android 4.3.
If not, just need to copy the stock rom to sdcard and install it the same way as a custom rom?
Thank you very much for your time
Regards
Paulo

Dear symondo12,
I have changed the sd card to a 2GB sd card and CWF now recognizes it.
I will see if I can download the stock firmware from samsung and see if I can install it and solve my problem.
Additionally I found a "Pure-Google-pre-rooted-4.3-v2.3"... hope it works.
Thank you once again

extSD card broken and cant install ROMs

On my tablet, I just want to confirm what I think I already know. When I plug in an external SD card, and I have tried several, the tablet does not recognize anything has been plugged in in any way. this makes installing ROMs very difficult. I had to install the EUU package via apx mode to get an os on it. I aquired this in an unknown/broken condition as a trade. The tablet now has 3.0.1 on it stock no root. After following the directions of several posts, i managed to get it working with all of the internal storage. According to the directions i followed after flashing the EUU package you would only have 128mb internal storage. And this is true, however if you signin to your google acct then do a factory reset on it, I then had all of my internal storage access able. Anyhow, I want a rooted/custom ROM on this but that is seemingly impossible if the extSD I inaccessable. Is this a known problem or can anybody venture a guess as to how it can be fixed or if there is another way to install a rom that at least has root, or preferably something newer than honeycomb. I'm sure I'm leaving out some bit of helpful info. Thank you for your time.
Tbe only custom rom I can think of is timmydeans v4. Its a modded EUU with a pre-rooted HC3.2.1 and cwm recovery. Download from the root guide in my sig

My tablet also quit reading the ext SD. And it chose to do it when I had just run a factory reset wipe on the internal SD. So my only option is to use APX mode and nvflash to install a ROM. My problem is I can't find the nvflash syntax for flashing a ROM. Can you help me with that? Thanks.
Edit: fastboot can flash a boot image dunno bout a system one. I'd try tdv4 tho. If ext sd still won't work after flashing that then I don't know of anything else that will do so.

What is the syntax for using fastboot to flash a ROM zip? I think it should be
Code:
fastboot flash part# rom.zip
What partition number should I use? And is that the correct syntax?
Unless you've bricked it in the last few hours it would be my suggestion to leave yr tab be. Especially so by those 2 questions you've just asked.
No u cannot flash a zip via fastboot.

I guess in a sense I did brick it. I installed a Cm-10.2 ROM that hangs during boot. When I tried to go back to the original ROM, I discovered that the tablet would no longer read the external SD card. I tried another card and it wouldn't read that one either.
I'm now trying to "push" the rom zip file to the internal SD card via adb. The problem I'm now having is that if I choose option 1 from the V8.bat menu, the Win7 adb driver doesn't work and that is the only one of the three that lets me choose where to look for the rom zip file. The others have only one choice and that reads "- TWRP". I've tried pushing the zip to /TWRP and /media/TWRP and neither one works.
Does anyone know what the correct mount point is for that directory?
Does anyone have a link for that rom handy? Also, what is an EUU rom exactly? It was the only full rom package in the "bundle market."

An EUU is the official Acer upgrade Tool which flashes an official Acer Rom via yr PC . Yr cpuid is required but an ext sd is not. The EUU will wipe all data and is normally used to unbrick a non-booting tab.
An "update.zip" can be a Full Rom or an update for a tab already running a stock rom. They do not wipe any data and are used when a tab is stuck in a bootloop or hanging at the Acer logo. They are flashed using either ext or internal sd card.
If you wish to flash an xda ics or jb rom, you need to unlock the bootloader to get a custom recovery. There's a guide in my Sig on how to do this and download links for the tools to achieve this.
Hope that answers yr question.

[Q] Accidentally selected 'format system' in cwm recovery on lg g2

Please Help. I accidentally formatted system in cwm recovery and i didnt even backup
Now i am stuck in LG bootanimation
But i can still access the recovery mode
i even tried mount usb storage so that i can install some rom directly from usb via otg cable but did not go well
also i cant read my sdcard. so install zip from sd card is also not possible.
So what do i do. Please help .
Please reply quickly as this my only phone and i dont have a spare phone
All you need to do is format all partitions except the internal sdcard, then flash another ROM along with gapps and super su (if using Aosp/CM). When you say the SD card can't be read do you mean in the Korean version?
Sent From Capsule Corp.
Another option (computer required). This method will return your LG G2 to bone stock. This method will remove root and custom recovery; but you'll at least have your G2 useable again. Click on this link, download, and follow all instructions. (it takes a while, so just be patient.)

Get an OTG cable and load a ROM onto flash drive and pop it into OTG cable and flash the ROM.
