MIUI is now open source! - Vibrant General

Miui has decided to go open source now and it seems like a great idea.
Can someone tell me what exactly it will mean for our phones if anything
Sent from my SGH-T959 using xda premium

My guess is more devs and more roms to pick from!
Sent from my NXM726HN using XDA App

Among other things, it will mean that if the rom is loaded with spyware sending all your info to some PRC Army server in China, someone might spot it in the code. I would never run a binary-only rom: that's how Carrier IQ got slipped in.

I just checked their website. It looks like they are putting up the source for a few apps, not for their Android code. I hope the FSF lawyers take a good hard look at them someday. The kernel at least is GPL; they can't legally distribute it binary-only.

Development Project Wanted

I'm a software development student but I'm taking no programming classes this semester. I am still very busy but would like something to tinker on to keep me sharp. I can program in Java and C. However, I don't know much about programming on the Android platform. Any suggestions? Phone or otherwise.

The continuum is very robust. You are familiar with its workings, so stick with it. Likewise, you probably won't be able to break it.. for programming, eclipse and the android sdk. Also, go grab all of teal blazers tools and apk manager along with whatever else you may find handy.. start with looking around. Learn the internals, start basic with small xml tweeks, move onto decompressing the smali files and learning that. Ill send you the credentials to the Dev drop box I created and it should have a lot of tools and modified files you can look at within.
Smali= dedicate a few days looking at the code, tracing it everywhere... And I have a pdf that you might like
That's my advice

Ill have a couple projects coming up.
1. My gf. Lost her continuum. So she got a sch-1405. GB sources. When I get apt soon ill unpack my PC and compare sources. Maybe build from most recent sources?
2. I'm on cell so can't link as easy. But xda search Aroma . It's a custom touchscreen recovery. I need some help configuring the files.
Ill post what i have done so far when you get back to me.

JellyBean Source being released today!

We're releasing Android 4.1 in AOSP today.
The name of the tagged release is android-4.1.1_r1.
The name of the development branch is jb-dev.
We recommend that you create new clients, even if you're working in
the master branch. It'll make your clients smaller and faster to sync.
Proprietary binaries are available for Nexus 7 and Galaxy Nexus. Nexus
S and Xoom will follow.

Oh thank jesus, i can not wait to get off ICS, i was actually happy (which is a relative term as android phone hackers are never "happy" with their device) with GB. They really made a balls of how graphics are rendered and so on in 4.0.

Obligatory reply for people genuinely thinking the same thing: You can't just compile it straight for the SGSII; wait for third-party developers to port it first.
(Perhaps we should all put it in big bold red letters in our signatures? xD )
Is there a JB from yet?

Request
This is a request to all moderators that have the power to ban people.
"jezus101" This is the name of the user that has continuously disregarded everyone's words about not asking for JB. He writes posts where they do not belong. I saw him post the very same thing (Is jellybean ready? and many more) at least 20 times.
Here comes my request, if you'd be so kind as to BAN "jezus101" for a 3 month period so he can maybe learn that there are some rules that aren't meant to be broken and they wouldn't be called rules if they didn't apply to everyone. I know this seems a bit harsh but it's getting quite annoying and simply ridiculous.
This is just something to think about.
Thank you.
With regards,

Dafuq ?Omg I cannot believe I am reading this,oh what ,are you even a human? Sir you are not only a moron but the most retarded creature I saw/read .Begone from xda and buy an iPhone. That's what you and your kind deserve.
Next thing I am expecting from you is you, yourself opening a new thread in the sgs2 development section with the title"Mod please ban me and I will give you a free jar of cookies" asking a mod ,on your knees and begging him to ban you from xda .That would be the apex of all.It won't make my day or week but perhaps a whole month.

This is what Apple gets right in their Store. Too bad they get everything else wrong.
---------- Post added at 10:54 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:48 PM ----------
I reported it also.
On that note, Google should make it easier for people to report inappropriate apps. I had trouble finding how/where to do it, and I'm quite internet savvy. There should be a big REPORT button right there on the app page.

As I can´t find something on this topic in this section, I want to ask if anybody here knows some news about the progress made with Canonical Ubuntu?

The Note as well as the S3 were ideal to start this mindblowing story.
Sadly there isno news on the progress since feburary/march.
