I used it as a travel device for watching movies, web browsing and email. Last summer we took a 12 day trip out of country and it was great having the tablet along. Play games in the morning; or check email at the hotel - stuff like that. I mostly watch movies when on the plane.
-
Kind of wish the display was a bit better - figure I'll upgrade to one of the new 1080p devices in 6 or 8 months. Right now I'm thinking that galaxy tab 7.7 will make a good book-reader.

I use the pad and dock quite often for school work.
Other than that, reading news mainly and browsing through forums and the web.

90+% of my time on the tablet is spent either browsing, or catching up on feeds in Google Reader, and sometimes both (opening up articles for further reading from the reader feeds). I'll do that while I'm sitting on the couch watching TV, etc. The other 10% is occasional light gaming basically.

I am an IT Manager / Network Administrator and I use the TF constantly at work for managing the network, servers, client machines, etc... as well as for browsing, games, instant messaging, and other personal uses as well. Generally speaking though, I could do my job entirely from my tablet from anywhere in the world where there is an internet connection (or cell service)... unless of course is one of those odd days where I actually have to pull a cable or physically move a computer...

I've replaced my laptop with my tablets. I do everything work and home related on them.

Pretty much the same here... I use it at work to pass the boring times. The only thing I don't do is work on mods.

It's my new daily driver i only break out the macbook pro for photo work or DVD creation, everything else is done on this beauty. TF101 B50 KB Dock B60 stock never rooted.

Web browsing and a lot of reading. As a budding developer, I read a lot technical books and its easy for me to learn new things and then rdp into my home system and do try them right then and there. Also used to do sys admin stuff when I can't be bothered to get out of bed.

i have just about replaced my laptop with my tf, i swear its never more than a few feet from me and very honestly in my hand at least 50 percent of my day doing everything from checking my emai and texting, to schoolwork and media consumption. and playing games of course,,,lol
i dnt however see a problem with this thread even if there was another thread that asked the same question... it was older and answered by different people. i dnt see anything wrong with asking a general question in the general or q&a i thought this is where it was supposed to be posted...meh whatever

I use it for pretty much everything... My HP ProBook 4510s has left my house like 2/3 times in the past 6/7 months XD
As an IT student, I use it in college the whole day, without having to worry about the battery, I can do everyting... and since I run my own virtualisation servers, I don't even have to use the computers at school anymore... I just need an internet coneectin, and I can use all the power of my servers if I need more power
But like I seaid, I use it for everything, reading/writing, browsing/getting the latest news, watching movies/clips, messeging............. What can't I do on it?

got mine like 3 days ago

[Q] So what do you use your tab for that you don't use your phone for?

I picked up my tab yesterday and i love it... However right now i feel that aside from browsing the web i use my phone for most things like email and twitter because its more convenient. What do you guys use it for? I want to get the most out of it so fill me in
Sent from my GT-P7510 using XDA Premium App
there's really nothing that I couldn't do on my phone...it's just easier/better doing it on the tab. For example, I read a ton of ebooks, and have been doing so on my phone, but lately it's started hurting my eyes, plus the small screen means I'm changing pages every 20 seconds which is annoying. or the 10 hour plane flight I'll be on in a couple weeks - I could watch a movie on my phone, but it's so much more enjoyable on the tab.
I think the better comparison is between tab and laptop, which for me is the big question. I use the tab for simply browsing and checking email, but when it comes time to actually do some typing, I go back to the laptop. Swype or not a real keyboard is just so much easier.
I'm the exact opposite.
Since I brought my tab home, I haven't touched my phone. It's been in the charger since Friday night.
I browse, email, text, music -everything basically from this tab.
Try plume for twitter, add swype and friend me for facebook and see if your phone is still more convenient.
Everything I want to see on a screen larger than four inches.
Tablets don't really do anything phones or laptops don't. They're just nice and comfortable to have for browsing the web, consuming media, reading, that kinda stuff. It's preferable to having an unwieldy laptop or tiny phone, so I can't wait till I get mine.
Sure, my phone can do everything my tab does, but a tablet is a lot more comfortable for many things. For example, I can browse the internet on my phone, but I rarely do because it just isn't that comfortable. I only do it when I don't have an option. Tab, however, is almost on par with a pc and way better when on the go.
I'm starting to think the 8.9 might be the sweet spot for a device like this.

I don't think that inch will matter. Especially when the 8.9 is said to have a lower quality display and be a bit thicker.
2 main things that I don't enjoy doing on my EVO:
1. Watching movies on planes. I fly a lot for work.
2. PDF signature app so I can sign and email documents without having to print, sign, scan. I know I can also do this on a phone but much easier on my Tab.
I for one am a ex-cell phone Rep, and the one thing that I spent years preaching was the all-in-one device. The Rep that got my Evo for me was trying to get me a tab when they first came out, and I asked one question that stopped the conversation. Can the tab make a regular phone call, not video chat (facetime,tango,etc..) just a phone call. The answer was no. So I am quite happy with a phone that I use for everything, than a tab that can't do it all

See I look at it the other way. I believe in using the right tool for the job. For example, a spork can do anything a spoon or fork could do but I'll never use a spork because it will never do as good a job as a dedicated spoon or fork. I hope that makes sense. It sounded good in my head.

Form factor. The 10.1 feels nice in my hand but when I have both my phone and 10.1 to me I almost always reach for the phone due to its size. Picking up the 10.1 just feels awkward and clunky. I just have a feeling that the 8.9 might be in that sweet spot (for me) where I wouldn't hesitate to grab it instead.
Now...I think the 10.1 is the perfect size if I was using it for a business but...for me it is just for fun.
I have only had the thing for a day though so opinions might change. Right now I find I'm using the tab mostly with XDA and tapatalk.

Was going to do a different thread, but this seems like a good place for me to ask..
I'm thinking about getting the 10.1 as a *replacement* for my laptop. I have the advantage of a terminal server at work (ie I can have my tablet "running" Windows 2003 Server, and I can use Logmein to control my laptop @ home (Windows XP).
The main things I do on my laptop are:
- Quicken (planning on Logmein)
- Internet (including Facebook flash games - can anyone tell me how well this works/doesn't work)
- Email (planning on web based)
I'm planning on Wifi only, since 95% of the time will use @ work & home. For other times, will use Hotspot on my phone.
Honestly, assuming that this can handle Facebook flash games, I just want to be able to sit on my comphy chair & use this tablet instead of sitting at the dining room table on my laptop. I keep thinking of things that I do on my laptop that the tablet can't do - and I just can't think of other problems.
I'm also planning on getting a bunch of education games for my kids (3 years & twin 2 years). They love playing on my mother's iPad, and I see lots of similar games for Android.
Oh - keep meaning to look this up - off the top of people's heads - assuming I use my same Gmail account, are programs I purchased for my phone OK on the Tablet, or do I need to re-purchase everything?
Finally, how's holding the device while sitting? I used to use a Tablet laptop (back in the pen days) and found out that you could only hold it for a brief time before your arm gave out.
Thanks for any help - especially on the Flash/Facebook games which is a make-or-break for me.

Kongregrate flash games work great, but just loading up a web page like you would in a windows box will not give you very good results.

Haven't gone digging in this area as I haven't gotten to the making babies part of life yet. But games run great. The Tegra 2 really makes things fly and the GT plays anything I throw at it with little or no lag.

Nope, soon as you sign into your google account you can hop into the market and re-download everything. No repurchasing here.

I also used an old school XP tablet/laptop. It was clunky, huge, heavy, unwieldy, and in short everything this device isn't. It's both thinner and lighter than an iPad 2 (not by much mind you, but just to give you an idea). So if you can hold your mother's iPad without issue, the GT won't be a problem either.
Hope this helps!

Much appreciated.
I don't play much on Facebook, but hoping that they are at least playable for the 10 mins a day that I do. I'm not so worried about other pages since I rarely have a problem on my Android phone.
Very glad to hear about not having to re-purchase things!
I thought about 1 more program I use on my laptop (although due to the kids not so often) - MTGO (Magic Gathering online). Wonder how well that would work through logmein. Might have to try remotely accessing my laptop from elsewhere to get a feel for it.
I'll have to borrow my mom's iPad for a day to try to get a feel for what it's like to hold it while sitting. I think that it probably going to be the other big thing. If it can do the programs & apps I need - is it more comphy then using a full blown laptop?
BTW - the thing I do most on my phone is read books. I *think* Kindle has a way to synch what page you're on.. shame most of my collection is outside of Kindle. Will have to look for programs that read other formats & can synch what page I'm on.
@polstein:
It's definitely easier to tote around and just lean back in a chair than with a laptop, no question. Also fewer worries about sitting somewhere with an outlet nearby, no concern about putting it down for a minute while you get up, etc. Minor things but they add up!
Like I said, the lack of a keyboard is the biggest concern. One option for this could be to use a BT keyboard, or purchase the USB adapter from Samsung. For monitoring things, reading, surfing, etc, it's great! I haven't used quicken for a number of years, so I dunno how much typing is required, but depending on the gui you might find yourself zooming in/out frequently, which could be annoying. Re books, I don't think there are other apps that sync. If your collection is in mobi format, or you're willing to convert, Kindle can sideload.
My opinion (after 1 day and some previous experience with an iPad): it's definitely not a full computer replacement. But I can definitely see going for a week or two just on the Tab, without opening my laptop. Especially if I bother teaching myself how to use one of the good android keyboards!

I almost never use my tab when I'm at home, I rather use my desktop then. Very rarely I whip it out when I'm going to bed and read a little. It's mostly when I'm not at home when I use it, but again, I don't leave anywhere all that often.
Maybe 7 to 8 hours
Sent from my A500 using Tapatalk
I like the Iconia but I would rather do my serious PC business behind my 25.5" Ubuntu desktop (much better at typing replies as well)
I use mine whenever I'm not at my PC.
I use it while watching TV, relaxing in bed before it's time to sleep either surfing, looking at magazines, reading an ebook or comic or to watch a tv episode that'll lull me to sleep, in the kitchen when I'm feeling adventurous with recipes or to quickly look things up regardless of where I am in my home. I pick it up as soon as some query comes to mind. I use it in the bathroom as well to listen to music or read magazines.
It's really as important to me as my smartphone is now.
If I consider playing music on the tablet as "being on it" then my poll answer would easily change from 3 to 5+ hrs since I use it to play and stream music to my music system and around my home - and I do that a LOT...during any chores I decide to do or again, while in the kitchen cooking and even when I'm ready for bed. I either load up Pandora or 2Player/Google Music depending on what mood I'm in right before bed and it play music until my Gentle Alarm goes off.
When I'm out on the road I'll use it mostly just to watch Netflix or Crunchyroll if my wife is doing something I don't want to (like going into a clothing store, yeah...I know better than to go with her). So I just use it to connect to my Mytouch4G hotspot and voila! I watch stuff until I have to drive again or I surf the web.
Um its hard its hard to.tell usually by side while at home

More than 5 hours because i do everything with my tablet. I dont need my notebook anymore.
Since I have had my Iconia(probably 2 weeks) I've been on it 7-12hrs/day. I now do all my business and crucial communications from it and with grooveip installed I can accept all my calls on my tablet while working. This thing has been a dream for me and I don't use my Win7 box anymore. Lol

I use mine primarily for reading ebooks. I used to have an old pda that i carried everywhere only for reading books but this blows it away completely. Of course! I use it on the toilet which can sometimes end up with me spending more time than i actually need to! I also use it for writing my kids academic reports at work which saves me a lot of hassle as I can use it anywhere for 5 mins. This machine is the shizznitz and my addiction has well and truly started. It's even got me reading books on app development!
2-3 hours a day. Mostly for checking e-mail, listening to music and reading news. I still prefer my desktop but the tablet is great for portability.

Laptop use.

I've had my note for well over a month now, and one thing i'm noticing is that my laptop is spending days and days buried under laundry or in its case between uses.
Pretty much the only thing mylaptop is used for now is watching movies with my girlfriend (when we want to watch something together, alone i just use the note) and for university assignments and printing.
My laptop used to be set up 24/7 and now it's barely ever on. The note has taken over ally basic daily computer/internet needs.
Having free desk space in the flat is great, although my girlfriend has taken over the desk mostly.
Has anyone else got rid of the laptop in favour of the note?

I realized that I started using my laptop only on weekends, instead of 7/24... G Note really takes almost all the daily usage.
I haven't really noticed this before, but now that you had me thinking.. Yes!
Most of the times when I came home, the first thing I'd do is set up my laptop, now I just sit down and get my Note out and comfortably do everything I did on my laptop before.
I don't think it's only because of the speed of the device, but mostly the size. It makes things so much easier.
Still I haven't completely abandoned my laptop as that, in it's own right, has some advantages too. But the usage has defonately lowered a couple of hours a day!
Not for me. I use my laptop at home for work and work applications only run in windows. Laptop is still on 24/7.
I only use my laptop when i watch movies or make music. Before i got this phone, i used my laptop all day every day.

My wife has complained how much I use my Xoom. Maybe i'm a tech junkie, but I love this thing.
Most favorite uses:
1. Watch movies/tv shows
2. Read books
3. Read comics
4. download torrents
My primary uses (and the apps I use) are:
* Web browsing (browser, Chrome, Boat)
* Reading Comics (Komik)
* Watching saved movies (MX, RockPlayer)
* Streaming movies (Netflix)
* email (Gmail)
* Twitter (TweetCaster)
* Backup (second string) laptop using keyboard case (Splashtop, iTap)
I have plenty of content/apps/etc. to (but don't necessarily want to): Read books (Google Books, Kindle), Read magazines (Play Magazines), Do light gaming (Madden, Crosscourt Tennis, Temple Run, Angry Birds, etc.), Attend lectures for online classes (Flash Player), Listen to music (Mortplayer), Edit images (Photoshop Touch)
Mine gets used for everything at the moment, as my laptop destroyed itself lmao

I use my Xoom for just about everything these days. It lets me get away from my desk. Most important uses are e-mail on the go, connectbot to log into and administer servers from the road, web-browsing, callendar, contacts list, note taking, etc. The only thing that I really wish it had was a better word processor, but I even use it for editing documents when I am away from the office with the apps that are available.
The other thing it is good for is eating up a day or two of time every now and then when I decide to try to upgrade to a new rom. I don't do it often enough and it atkes me a while to catch back up on what is going on in the rom world :silly:

I'm trying to use mine as a desktop replacement, but I find there are some limitations that hiner that, in particular I seem to have issues with dropbox sync and quick office pro seems to have a number of limitations when working with large documents and spreadsheets. Great for kindle, evernote and wasting hours on Great Little War Game though
Unfortunatelly I did not use my Xoom much, so I just sold it a couple of weeks ago. I only had it for about 7 months.
Thought I would use it for surfing the web from the sofa or while travelling. Indeed I just wasted some time with crappy games or left it switched of for days. Some of my tasks required a pc so I did all my surfing and stuff there. I was a little sad giving it away but it was just too expensive and has a too high loss of value for leaving it in the box. Now I got an ultrabook wich fits my requirements better.
Reading books, gaming (CS FTW!), surfing the web, watching movies and soon to be used in university
I use it to look at p0rn LOL!!
Ok on a serious note, I barely use it. Only when I read manga, which the XOOM outdones itself for that simple task.
Gaming, YouTube, and browsing/emails.

Use my xoom for everything;
browsing,
email,
GPS (can mount it in my 4wd)
maps (live in outback Australia and go bush a lot),
videos,
movies,
work (download, fill in and upload about 150 pdf files a week),
lately getting into e-books,
the list goes on but I won't ,
my laptop is gathering dust in the corner (only used when I need to use adb).
Because of the great work of Team EOS I also get to update roms and this satisfied the geek in me.
Also love the portability; on a flight last week I could hold the xoom up to the window and get a GPS fix and then see what we were flying over on a map.

Mine gets used for pretty much everything, web browsing, films/tv, music, games, I've even done some java and python programming on it.
I use mine for email and bedroom internet surfing when at home.
When away, I use Google Wallet and games.
Google News/RSS reading via "Reader HD" app (Awesome!!)
Browsing
IMDB app lots while watching TV/movies
Kindle app reading books
A bit of Gmail, though I also do that on my BlackBerry
That's about it I think
EDIT as for location, I use it at home on my couch, bed, patio, etc. Also use it at my mom's place when I'm over visiting. That's about it.
I mainly use it to kill time on the tube/trains. Read books, listen to music, study my notes and play games. When I have a connection, I also use it to check emails, bus timetables etc.
I use it for internet browsing on the couch, watching youtube vids, playing games here and there, bringing to a friends house to play music from, using as an e-book when on lunch at work, setting alarms at work, etc.
Books music fun toy games and of course...

My most common daily use is for reading news. Specifically the Currents app (love it), Reader HD, Reddit and Pocket. That, plus a bit of social network and gaming and it pretty much consumes me. As for productivity, I have a Personal and Work homescreen that each has corresponding Gmail and Tasks widgets. Love this device.
Flipboard (no need for browers, look very nice)

Believe it or not...work. I do some IT consulting on the side and I needed something to allow me to work in an emergency but was small enough to carry with me anywhere and everywhere. I own a full license for Teamviewer which works well on Android. I also have email addresses at 4 client locations so this is my "central hub" for work and personal mail. I love that I can VPN into the sites, access file shares, remote into servers and workstations, etc. (Just made a hell of a lot more sense than an iPad) I also do my accounting on it and can print my invoices right on site as I have the printers setup with Google cloud print and with PrinterShare it's no problem to send my PDF invoices right to the printers.
Oh, and the other usual crap...Netflix, web browsing, and browsing several forums with Tapatalk. Before I forget, I also manage my stocks with Ameritrade.
There's more, but that's the gist of it.

I bought the Nexus 7 mainly for watching movies when I'm traveling. I also have an iPad 2 but find it a bit large/heavy. The Nexus 7 is great in that aspect.
Netflix when it's slow at work, Reddit and Facebook at home

Hi Everyone I'm thinking of trading up the Transformer Prime for a Nexus 7. I got one for my mom, and I just like the size and feel in my hands vs the larger 10.1". My plan is to use to quickly take notes at meetings and the web.
My question is what does everyone primarily use their Nexus 7 for?

I have the Prime and it hasn't been touched since I got my 7.
Using it for music via bluetooth, taking notes at work meetings, video chat with my girl when I am traveling, access work cpu via Splashtop to write up orders, etc.
The 7 is absolutely perfect for my use. I use my Gnex only when the 7 is charging. Which isn't often.

I mostly use mine passively for media consumption, web browsing & casual gaming. However the split screen pane in gmail when using a Nexus 7 means it's pretty good for emails too.
