Hi I just wanted to share my super awesome story here with everybody in the xda community. It's pretty crazy!
Recently I was up in the mountains of Utah ice fishing on a lake. I had my HTC Droid Incredible in my shirt pocket listening to some music. I got a bite on my fishing pole so I bent over to grab my pole (I guess I had forgotten to button up my shirt pocket, OOPS!) and plop there goes my phone into the water. I reached my arm down in the hole as fast as I could to grab it but no luck. At that point I thought, well there goes my $200 dollar phone I loved! I had accepted the fact that it was probably gone forever.
So while I was stewing there facing the fact that I had to buy a new phone, a great idea flashed through my mind. One of the guys I went fishing with happened to bring an underwater camera. I sat and thought, well the least we could do is drop it down and see if we could hook onto the phone somehow and get it back on the surface and at least salvage my SD card that was inserted in it.
We continued with dropping the camera down the hole and quickly located the phone, it was lying face down on the bottom of the lake. So we thought, heck lets throw a big hook on the end of the pole try our luck. After a few minutes of playing with the pole a little bit we managed to find our hook on the screen and placed it close to the phone. At this time we were noticing a lot of fish circling around where the phone was (I guess fish like HTC's too!). So for the next hour-and-a-half we continuously tried to hook onto the phone with no luck, although we did manage to catch two fish in the process. We finally caught a break, somehow we managed to hook on to the edge of the screen between the plastic and the glass and flipped the phone over face up, this got us excited and gave us whim of hope that maybe we would be able to retreive the phone. We continues trying for another fifteen minutes when voila, we hooked onto the phone again and this time for good because we pulled it up a little bit and could see it hovering above the lake floor.
We began to reel it up very slowly as to make sure that it didn't fall off the hook and be back at square one. We got the phone up to the surface of the water and I grabbed it as fast as I could. When I grabbed it I realized we had caught it in a place that almost seems impossible. We managed to hook it in the headphone jack and were able to reel it up all the way! The tiny 3.5mm headphone jack! When I grabbed the phone it was vibrating and had been doing so for the near two hours it spent on the bottom of the lake. I took the battery out as fast as I could and put it away.
At this point I was amazed at the fact that I even got the phone back.
So when I got back home, I sprayed out the phone with compressed air and then continued to take it apart all the way down to the mainboard and the lcd screen. I then sprayed it with air once again and proceeded to put all the pieces of the phone into a bag of uncooked rice.
24 hours later I took the phone out of the bag, and knew this was the moment of truth! I put the phone back together and popped the battery in. I pressed the power button and I kid you not the phone booted up and worked! I was truly amazed! The phone still continues to work to this day which Is almost a month later.
I think this speaks for how well HTC makes their phones and how rock solid they are, I know if I had the choice I would definitely buy one again. I thought everybody would appreciate this so I posted the story just for fun.
Best wet phone story ever... ice fishing... bottom of the lake... snagged it in the heaphone jack... all while catching fish.
Somebody beat that!
It was pretty awesome! I thought it'd be a good story to share.

That's crazy that it still works. I would have gave up fishing for it about 5 minutes after I started.

Epic story. Hardware wise, these things are indestructible.
I agree. It's built from stone.

Yep I love this phone, I've been so reluctant to upgrade because of how durable it is and with all the mods and customizations that are available on it, it's just awesome.
great story

Thats a great story and even though i have a rezound now ... i will never forget how incredible that phone was.
How do you like the rezound compared to the incredible? I was looking at one as a possibility for upgrade, that or the gnex.

So I do a lot of reading on this forum but rarely post.
Last night, my phone fell out of my hands while I was sitting outside the hottub and went right into it. It was like how something falls to the bottom of the ocean in a movie. I got it out right away dried it off, took out the battery and sd card and looked at it.
It seemed that no water got into the system at all. The phone works just as it did when before the dive. The only thing that is touchy is the charger now, but oh well.
Samsung ftw
My friend dropped his Incredible in tea. He thought the same thing, but now, the phone reboots itself when it gets warm at all, and if it gets cold, the touchscreen becomes unresponsive. It was stupid to turn it back on. You should have immediately stuck it in dry rice and never turned it on, as that can prevent damage from happening.
Yeah, regardless of manufacturer/model, never turn a dunked phone on until you're 100% sure it's as dry as you can possibly get it.
Pull the battery and SD card, then shove the whole mess into a bag of white rice for AT LEAST 24 hours, more if you can. The longer it sits in the rice with no power, the more likely it is to survive the dunking.
Nah dehumidifier is better lol

Anyone know of any cell phone shops that have a wet phone recovery service?
I would place the phone inside a small pressure vessel and pull a deep vacuum for 15-20 mins (or until I archived 1000µm). Then break the vacuum with dry nitrogen. Repeat 3x's.
This is the method for pulling moisture out of refrigeration systems and it does work well.
I would think a small phone shop could easily get $50 a pop to save someones phone.
Hope yours stays happy! good luck
Hair dryer.

I would worry about the screen in a vacuum.
If it were my phone though, I would completely disassemble it and make sure I got all of the water out that way, maybe hit it with some 99% isypropal to help get any water out from under chips and in tight places, and let it dry for a few days in silica beads.
A hairdryer is a horrible idea. It can't pull the water out. On the contrary, it's more likely to force the water into worse places.

I know that, but there are people that will blindly follow anything they read on these boards, and I've seen a hairdryer suggested before.

Rice is a good option and works well, but the small silica packets that are used as desiccant work even better and can be purchased very cheaply.
Putting your phone in some sort of vacuum or near-vacuum is probably a bad idea because the hardware was likely not designed to withstand such conditions.

Ok guys update.
So its been what a couple of days now, and my phone is working pretty good. all the main things work. the only thing that is a little touchy is the charger, and it keeps saying usb connected, but i can live with that.
I uses to work at a sign shop and my bosses kids were terrible about throwing phones in water so he found the little pink water detector strips so I know if you do that you can put it on and trade out your phone

I second that LOL.
Anyways, I just want to say Samsung FTW because this phone has just been amazing in so many ways. Abilities to super customize in any way, shape and form, awesome screen...I was VERY hesitant on buying an all touch screen phone. Coming from a Blackberry Tour I was very use to a real keyboard and buttons. Yes this phone has it's up's and downs, but all in all the pros really out weigh the cons.
I'm in absolute NO rush to get a new phone any time soon. I love my Fassy
So I just dropped my beloved vibrant ok the toilet and need reassurance, anyone whos done it before, will it live? So far its working ok, random color spasms and headphone port sounded distorted for a second but stopped when I paused music. It hasnt happened in about 15 minutes and the phone fell about an hour ago and dryed for about 30 minutes. I ran it over with a bike before on accident and it still worked and I love this phone so hopefully it will survive. Anyway worst damage to happen to your phone and it still worked?

Turn off your phone, take out the battery and put it in a bag of rice. Good as new in about 2 hours.
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using XDA App
Before you put it in rice, might want to clean the ports and anything that you can access with distilled water. This will hopefully prevent corrosion from rusty, particle ridden toilet water.
I was at an Ace Hardware where they were selling, for five or ten bucks, a plastic bag with some dessicant for wet-phone rescue. Rice or any dessicant should work fine. I would make sure no rice dust gets into phone.
If you have any kind of blower or compressed air, blowing it out gently on no heat first might be a good idea. Also, I would first take phone somewhat apart, remove battery, sim, sdcard. Dry loose parts by hand, then blow out phone, especially all ports and contacts.
Some kind of tuner-cleaner might be an option if needed.
Thanks guys I took the whole phone apart yesterday and air dryed/ blew air in to dry it out and its working great. Only issue is the volume down rocker doesnt work 100% I have to press it a couple times to make it work. Any way to fix that?

your phone has been through hell haha!
unfortunately there isnt much anyone here can tell you. there are certain things you can do to get as much water out as possible like the rice trick, swabbing all ports, etc. but in the long run, theres really no way of telling if any water got in deep enough to go unnoticed/uncleanable, and actually reached a point where it could cause damage <--- and if thats the case, like Woodrube said, you may experience issues somewhere down the road, even long enough to the point when youve totally forgotten about dropping it in the toilet, and youll say "how come this started happening all of a sudden?"
sucks man, gotta be careful...i went to the bathroom one night to relieve myself, after 1 or 2 drinks , and for some reason i thought that holding my phone in the same hand that was aiming wasnt the worst idea ever......yup, i ended up pissing on my blackberry

I was watching tv when i noticed my evo wasn charged(even though i plugged it in for like 1hr.) and i though it might be broken charger since its really old, but didnt know the wall port was malfunctioning
so i decided to wipe battery stats and charge it with pc, as im booting into recovery im cleaning my screen, wiping it with my shirt.I got distracted for bit(stupid TV) that when i look down to the phone , it had already booted and since i have touch recovery, lucky me had partitioned sd card accidently!!!!!!
at first i pressed back key then power button cus i had no idea what that meant, but it compleated . so i power on the phone when i found out what partinioned meant by lookin at my homescree , i went into file explorer and everything was gone, F*CKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK. And i have no idea if i can ever get it back DAMNN

Back when GB came out, I unrooted, S-ON'ed, and took the OTA like a lot of people did and lost root for months. In my defense though, this is my first Android phone and it was the first OTA since I had rooted and I didn't know the dangers of taking OTA's and patched bootloaders, etc. Lesson learned.

I have made many mistakes, ive probably bricked my phone a dozen times. I ****ed up my charger port, due to always having it on the charger and then tripping over the cord so many times, so the port no longer works. And I broke all of the hard clips on the exoskeleton on my seideo case.
i kno i can prolly find the files on my pc, but im just tripping over the titaniumbackup folder cus ive used sd recover software but it finds folders with weird names
i still cant believe that out off all the options, i ended up pressing sd partition.
touch recovery doesnt sound so cool after this.. lol
My worst thing was opening this thread.
Lol just kidding. My worst thing was stressing over sprint giving me a refurb when my USB port got loose so I sent it to HTC and got one anyway. they were smart enough to keep my original housing though.

i haven't really done anything terribly stupid with it. i almost dropped it in a puddle once... it slipped out of my hand while i was texting in the rain.. ok well, that's stupid. anyways, as it fell, i kicked it onto the sidewalk before it hit the water. thank god i didn't break the screen, i kicked it really ****ing hard. i was more worried about it getting wet than replacing the screen since thats cheaply fixable. anyways, this phone's been great. the build quality, though not fantastic, is a lot better than my previous smartphones. these things are still new, they're still working out all the kinks i'm sure.

I dropped mine in a toilet once because I was using it while taking a piss and then tried to zip up my fly with the hand that was holding it. Yeahhh not one of my best moments. Anyways, after a day in rice, it's worked fine ever since.
Worst thing I did with my evo4g is trade it+$60 for a evo3d with the 1.5 hboot. :banghead:
Wiped sd card on accident instead of format/system. Lost my restore points and ...everything else. Luckily i put my pics on the computer every once in a while.
Yea.....
Worse thing I did was, during an alcohol-fueled night out, try to plug my phone into the car charger. (I was in the passenger seat, not driving) This would have been perfectly fine, had the port I was trying to force my plug into not been the mHDMI out port. Now I no longer have HDMI Out as the little white thing on the inside is busted.
Glad I didn't drop my phone in my drink like my bud did that same night lol
Worst thing i did was keep my evo for 2 weeks after i got an et4g cuz i didnt wanna give it up now i dont even wanna touch it it feels so slow and the screen just looks dirty

Worst thing i've done with my Evo(aside from the standard cycle of breaking/fixing software-wise) would be dropping it off my motorcycle at 40 mph. Thank God for Otterbox cases and riding in the right-hand lane!
Hey,
I got to college early one day and had to take a stop at the rest room, so I put my back pack down and there was this little soap tray on the sink and I put my phone on that. I am taking care of business and I hear my phone drop. I thought nothing of it I was like Il get it out of the sink later. But then I realized it the sink had an auto sensor! I honestly how no idea how on earth it didnt go off when my phone fell in, and I had no idea how the heck I was going to get it out. so I just did a ninja grab and pulled it out and luckily it didnt go off but gosh it scared the crap out of me lol
Stevo
flashed nv items, but you know that already. dont you?
Broke my 4G without a Wimax key backup

All I can say is, be sure to secure your vids and pics before coming home from out of town work and letting your girlfriend mess with your phone.

In the process of trying to help someone fix their device, looking for an ENG build I decided to download and install the Pre-Release ROM for the EVO. The thing had an HBOOT version of 0.68 (which I'd never even heard of before), and it was an nb0 file, not an img file. Me, of course, being completely fearless and looking forward to a challenge decided to try and flash the thing, and guess what? it flashed successfully. I figured that if it wasn't compatible, it would error out, so I was feeling pretty comfortable, until I tried rebooting my bootloader. The device turned on, but nothing. Just a backlit, blank screen. My splash screen was gone. My bootloader was gone. Though, the phone does boot up, and I hear a startup animation sound, and several notification-type sounds. However, the device is no longer recognized by a computer, and thus I can't access adb or fastboot.
So, I'm stuck with a bricked device, waiting & hoping that a refurb becomes available soon. In the meantime, my only device is my old AT&T Tilt 2, which, of course, has no service. I've been specding the last day try to find a way to make phone calls from it using Google Voice, and I've come pretty close actually.
You never realize how much you appreciate your device until you kill it. I just hope no one's been trying to call me . . . .
After having this phone for 3 weeks (Today literally made it 3 weeks), the phone took a fall from my computer desk and the "gorilla glass" completely cracked. So now all that is displayed is a single green pixel and a line of about 10 white pixels.
I was really happy with this device up until this point, but a fall like that breaking the screen is unacceptable. Guess it's time to find another new phone.
Must have been a real unlucky hit. Mine has fallen from shopping cart height 3 times without even a scratch. Back went one, battery another...put it all back together and all was good.
I guess I will chalk it up to bad luck and hope for better next time. Just ordered the Epic Touch, so we shall see how that goes (and this time I got a case with it, lol).
I wanted to go back to HTC, but something about these Samsug phones has drawn me in.

Well I ended up losing the Epic 4g Touch auction by like $3, so I went looking for a nice SIII but in the end grabbed up the HTC Evo 4G LTE. Will have it on Wednesday.
I will probably grab up a bad ESN Epic at some point though just so I can have a backup phone (better safe than sorry). I really did like this phone and I figure the SIII would also be amazing, but I could not justify paying almost $200 more for the SIII than the Evo LTE.

If were talking about dropping phones during hurricane sandy. This was at night and the rain was over and the center of the storm was heading towards Philly so I went outside to record the storms force. While standing there a few seconds late a huge gust of wind blew pushed me and knock my phone right out my hand it fell smack down on its face on to the concrete I was like O_O I picked it up no crack in the screen just a dent in the plastic part around the phone. But now I'll never have warranty because somehow now my battery has half pink on it. If I had an iPhone 4S it would of been history for that phone. The epic records good night video by the way.

Just luck of the draw then I guess. I still can't believe that it broke from one tiny drop onto a soft surface, but these things happen. I guess I won't fully write off Samsung, but for now I gotta stick with what I know has worked for me in the past.
Since I got myself new Nexus, I gave my sister i9001. I used to treat it like king, not a single scratch, not even on back of it. I was walking down the street with my sister. When she talks, she usually waves everywhere with her arms and she was holding the phone. When she swung up, the phone just "escaped" from her hand in the air, like 3,5 meters high (don't know how much feet, sorry 'Merica) and it fell on the middle of the road with pretty great force (if that was happen to iPhone, it would probably be turn to dust). Anyway, that moment when we realized what happened and the noise the phone did when hit the ground just terrified me, and the phone was face down so I couldn't see the screen. I crapped my pants while getting the phone from the ground thinking what kind of damage is done on the device. But when I picked it up, it didn't have a single scratch. Except little crack but on that silver crap on the edge (I don't know how is that called, but it is irrelevant, it's barely noticable). After that sister got the back cover and SIM card from the other side of the road. It still works perfectly
Just felt like I need to share with you about the armor of Galaxy S.
Bear witness to the amazing power of the SGS construction and, I suppose, a lot of force escapes with the cover and battery when they're ejected...
