Honeycomb framework over Ice Cream Sandwich - Acer Iconia A500

Ok guys, here's my question:
I love the performance and LOUDNESS of the Thor (ICS) ROM. I'm currently running Taboonay, but it's really sluggish running GTA III so I gotta go back to my stock Honeycomb ROM (backup). I'm going to install the Unity kernel so I can overclock, but I still won't be able to get that awesome volume that Thor has. Would I somehow be able to use Honeycomb framework (for GUI) over everything else Thor? (I really like the purples, blues and greens in Honeycomb) Or is there a simple way to bring the volume up like Thor for stock Honeycomb? The volume SUCKS on stock Honeycomb, and I've used worthless apps like Vol+ and manipulations to the build.prop never work.
This may be a dumb question to some, but I've never manipulated the volume in Android before. I just checked the install for Taboonay, and it doesn't even have a build.prop, so Idk what to do. :/

You should go to the site we do not name and check the ICS thread, about page 146 or so, there's a system file that might help you out....
Might be worth a look....

Simply *something*? I'm not sure which site you're talking about. I guess I'll just stick with stock Honeycomb, but add an overclocking kernel.
Thanks!

He was referring to the site where you got the rom
Here at XDA, it is not allowed to post direct links to Thor's website, nor post any software containing his kernel.
It is also frowned upon, to carry on in-depth discussions about his software, except for the original CWM Recovery.

Please,
i kindly ask to stop to mention Thor name in every thread, if you have any concern about his leaving then use the Privat Message feature.
I won't repeat this thing forever, so give up please.

Best custom rom

Yesterday i got an Iconia A500, first thing i did was, of course, to root it and install cwm recovery.
Now i want to flash a new rom but i don't have much time to try all roms and decide which one is the best.
So i decided to take a shortcut with this poll.
Here we go guys...
Which rom do you believe it's the best for Iconia?
Feel free to write comments for your decision. And thank you all for your time.
You missed off the Stock option.
I've tried all those custom ones, and they all have issues which Stock doesn't.
Plus, which one is "best" is purely subjective. All your poll will tell you is which one people use MOST, which doesn't necessarily make it the best.
Taboonay
imho

I hear you or better read you mate and I know that the word "best" doesn't actually represent what I need but I will get an idea.
Can you please explain the issues the custom roms have? Cause I use custom roms since my first windows smartphone 3 years ago and I must say that I love custom roms.
yeah, you should probably add 'stock' and 'lightspeed' as the latter is gaining traction. i'm using stock rooted for now.

I didn't add stock because i like the extras on the custom roms. As for lightspped it has too many apk's removed for my taste.
I have had my a500 for a month and I think I have tried every ROM except for the minimalist (or whatever it is now called). In general I have found the roms that are based on the stock rom are the best (taboonay, honeyvillain). Taboonay is cool because the developer, Vache, makes available a kitchen UI that is web based so you can modify the ROM and add/remove items. Very cool.
I used Primee which is a build of the Transformer rom for the first two weeks I had the device and I really liked it but there was some sort of dispute over kernel source which I don't come close to understanding and the developer took his toys and went home. He continues to build and support the rom on his own site but I like ROMs to have the visibility of XDA for support.
I tried all of the virtuous roms and it is cool to see roms from other devices but it always seems like there is some little tweak or lag that drives me crazy. Virtuous Galaxy is by far the slickest looking rom IMO. Dare I say that Samsung is almost Apple-like in their UI design (I mean that as a compliment I think).
Right now I am running Taboonay 1.1 with richardtrip's OC kernel and it is silky smooth. It is almost disappointing to have a ROM work so well because as an early Android adopter (HTC Magic), I sort of enjoy the journey more than the destination. Luckily, there is and always will be new ROMs to try.

By excluding ROMs that don't represent what you actually need, you render the whole poll null and void. For all you know, a ROM you left off could well be the most popular!
As for problems, it's things like camera not working properly, or rotation lock not working, or differences in how the external SD card is mounted, or random reboots, or preinstalled games from the stock ROM either missing or not working if you install them etc. All fairly minor things, but I like all the parts on my tab to work as they were meant to work. That's why I run a stock ROM, but use RichardTrips OC'd kernel (which is near to stock).

Well it's a bit more complex than that, you also have to take into consideration (along with it being subjective) the fact that the results are only coming from people who like vote in polls
So strictly the thread title should be: Best custom rom - results based only on people who like to vote in polls
PS I did not vote - but currently using dexters new primee 3.2
MJ-12
I am using Virtuous Galaxy 1.04 ROM; the only issue is not being able to seek in the You Tube app; other than that it's a fast ROM.
My two favorite are not even on there. Lightspeed and Minimal. I like Lightspeed as I can use a custom kernel and clock the tablet to 1.6GHz. I like Minimal as it's a very well done rom without bloat. These are the only two I like better than stock. I've tried many of the others, but only those above have really been worth it for me.
can anyone reply me i am using taboonay and still not able to play HD movies on my TAb
i am not talking about 1080 but 720 MKV's still not working which is simply playable on my galaxy S

Please suggest me Custom rom regarding this.

The best problem free for me is stock 3.1 and loving it, love the others but toooo many problems.
primee. 9-5a all the way. You can find it on tabletroms.com, and is by far the most stable, well built roms to date, with all the features of the transformer Rom but a hybrid base file system with a lot from the stock Iconia for compatibility
My comparison of 4 ROMS. Like Taboonay 2.1 the best.
I have flashed 4 different ROMS since I purchased my Iconia a500. Here is my take on the pros and cons.
• The first one I tried was Virtuous Picasso 1.1.0 [HC 3.1]. Super fast and had no problems, but I didn’t like the fact that it wasn’t based on an ACER build and there was no way to add the Acer stock games to the ROM. This ROM had the highest Quadrant score out of all the ROMs I tried. It’s discontinued, so there will be no more updates.
• The second one I tried was Honeyvillian 1.05 [HC 3.1]. Good speed, very reliable, and I was able to add the Acer stock games back to the ROM and flash an overclock kernel. The ROM was based on an ACER build, so all the stock software was included. I like some of the ACER stock software, but some of it I could live without. I was reluctant to upgrade to Honeyvillian 1.1 which is a Honeycomb 3.2 ROM because it was based on the a501 OTA update and not the a500 OTA update, and I decided to hold out for a Honeycomb 3.2 Rom that was based on the OTA update for the a500.
• The third ROM I tried was Acer_A500 OTA 7.006.01 [HC 3.2] Rooted w/ Busybox for CWR [Sep 17th, 2011] by ezterry. This ROM was very near stock but rooted. I was able to Flash the adhoc fix and set ro.carrier=wifi-only. It uses the default Acer kernel but I was able to flash an overclock kernel. The ROM was very smooth and had no problems. A great ROM if you want to stay very close to stock and like all the stock ACER software.
• The forth ROM I tried was Taboonay 2.1 [HC 3.2]. I decided to try this ROM because it is based on the a500 OTA 3.2 Honeycomb update for a500 users and the a501 OTA 3.2 update for a501 users. The ROM has all the Acer stock software removed, but you can use the online kitchen to add just the Acer apps and games you want and skip the ones you don’t want. Plus the games get installed to the data partition so they don’t take up room in the ROM it self, and they can be uninstalled. You can also use the online kitchen to install a few other goodies like themes and bootup animations. It has an overclock kernel built in and ro.carrier=wifi-only is set by default for a500 users. So far the speed is great. The only issue I have is that the screen sometimes turns off and on for a second when it sleeps on its own. If I put it to sleep by clicking the power button, the problem doesn’t occur. So far this is my favorite ROM because I get the benefits of Honeycomb 3.2 and I can pick the stock Acer apps I want. GREAT ROM!!! I think I will stay with this one for a while.
Hope this helps some of you that are doing your initial research on picking your first ROM.
Total noob question. I don't mind the stock rom but I would like to overclock. Is it possible to just keep stock rom but still use a kernel like tripps? Also, when 3.2 finally goes ota here in the states, do I need to put everything back to stock (netflix patch as an example) before I update as to not brick my device? Thanks for the help

RichardTrips kernel works fine with stock.
Regarding 3.2, if you take the FOTA, you will lose root, you will lose CWM, and you will lose the ability to flash custom ROMs and kernels. It has a new bootloader that hasn't been broken yet and so far, can't be rooted unless its done pre-flashing.
There's a modded version of the 3.2 stock in the dev section that doesn't do all this, from ezterry.
so do you recommend just flashing a custom rom that already has 3.2? also, what benefits should I see using trips kernal over the stock one? Lastly, can someone post a link to the trip kernel that I should download. Did a search and couldn't find it. Thanks
Yes.
Flash the ROM by ezterry. It's based on the 3.2 update but rooted. It is very near stock, but you can flash an OC kernel.

hey quick question on roms and which ones have been proven and are current..sorry

hey guys, and sorry for a question i know must have been asked before, but i am unable to find.
What roms are the best and most up to date as of now?
i was going to go with cm7 but saw we had cm9 and a few others out there, my real question is, anything better then cm7 out there?
this will be used for my wife, who just wants it to work, as little freezes and hang ups as possible, feature set means nothing next to speed and reliability.
this is my last attempt to make this phone usable for her before i take my 12 gauge to it. please please help! i have to her hear whine everyday with the 2.6.1(think that's it) kernel on there (hasn't been updated in over a year, so anything should be an improvement, it's just hard to get the phone off her long enough to toy with it)
In that case I would use either Superclean 3 or Geewiz
Both are stock EH03 based Touchwiz ROMS. Neither has bleeding edge features but they both just work and are the most up to date ROMs that come from the Samsung/Verizon base. Personally, I have found these ROMS to be the best on battery longevity.

cool, i already d/l'd the geewhiz but it's not taking like the other rom's i'm used to, flashed stock rom E3 and booted in to recovery and tried to update with gwiz through recovery, signature error of some sort, will try again with the other one you mentioned ..... or do i need to load the kernel using odin then flash rom through recovery?
I would also recomend giving Team Hacksung ICS build 6.5 w/ Icy Glitch v14 b4 kernel a try! No doubt superclean and geewiz are great roms, but I think you will like ICS 4.0.3 the best...just sayin.

[KERNEL][CM9][1/29/12] Icy Glitch V14 - BETA - LiveOC - Voodoo - DIDLE - USBhost
gotta bail from work will be back on with the tablet in about an hour.
ICS still has some issues and while it's good enough for 99% of people if this is for pure stability for a nontechnical user I'd say to go for the ROMs I mentioned earlier. Some issues on ICS are MMS doesn't work with wifi on, the datadata issue, the ui is a bit different from Touchwiz ROMs, phantom ring still occurs, CWM and nandroids still have some issues, and it's on a pretty rapid release cycle which would mean that you would need to update her phone fairly often.
ICS is great and it's what I'm running but I think the more mature EH03 ROMS are appropriate in this case.
EDIT:
The link you have goes to Glitch which is a kernel. That is part of the operating system but isn't the entire ICS OS. ICS ROM development is centered over at the rootzwiki developer forum. AOKP, Gummy, and teamhacksung's build are the premier builds.

Yeah, i figured if the kernel was in beta the rom would be as well, got her on super clean and she likes it , still can't tell the difference between that and a 2.6.1 build that was beta around a year ago, lol, thanks for the help and ics is sick , but bob nailed it in regards to my intentions.
That said , thanks to the both of you for bothering with this b.s. question in the first place , i was at work trying to sort her phone out , she needs her phone , life is chaos and time is short, thanks for making it all a little more easy. Also great to see such great support still going on for this, envious with my charge in regards to roms.
Hope i don't need to post here again for a while if you get what I'm saying, haha !! Thanks a ton !

Which ICS ROM is better?

Is the official leaked ICS ROM better then Thors current ICS ROM? Because I am running Thor's currently, and was wondering if its worth to update to the official leaked ICS ROM. I don't care much about features and stuff, all I need is something that functions good, and how its supposed to run.
I'm running FLEXREAPER and its been amazing so far. I also came from running Thor's rom, but I'm extremely happy with what civato has accomplished so far.
Depends on which of the brocken versions you want to use. None have full function. Some are more buggy then others. None use proper resolution, nor the new Tegra 2 optimizations, nor the addtional HDMI fuctions.
Probably best to wait for the upcoming offcial build, which will include all the optimizaitions, resoultion changes, dual layer dashboard, Acer wheel, then root it and go from there.
It depends on your level of technical ability.
I would recommend:
Reading through the links below
Install RA via Acer Recovery Installer (use custom image option)
Flash Stock, then flash CWM version via RA Recovery (all in one step, losing recovery)
Install unlocked bootloader+custom recovery
Advantages:
Keep root
Unlock bootloader
Keep recovery
Remount /system rw (requires terminal app)
Remove bloat manually
Camera works
No sleep of death
Basically stock
I'm really pleased with my A500 right now, so this is what I'm running.

Is it necessary to be that aggressive to someone who is clearly an end-user? Why not state that "all of the roms released here benefited from an open collaborative environment from developers. This is why things like the GPL are important, because everyone can benefit by sharing knowledge that results in a quick resolution to issues that arise."
There is no need to attack people like a zealot

This sounds like a troll post.
None use proper resolution? Is that a joke?
None have full function?
Flexreaper R4 is running well for me. No complaints. Seems just as functional as Honeycomb to me since full root and /system write permissions.
ATM the ROMs based on the Acer leak are by far the best, as they have practically everything working (contraty to what some other poster thinks). There are some small omissions (like face unlock) and probably a few bugs that didn't yet show up, but other than that they are surprisingly fast and stable (I'm using FLEXREAPER R4, too).
As to violating GPL... well, in the end probably both do, but in thors case it's a good bit worse as he has a choice while vache (and those building on his leak) haven't.
Came from Thor's as well. I then went to Lightspeed, which ran well but is really stripped down. If you want a pretty bare-bones ROM, this is good for that. I am now on Taboonay, which has seemed every bit as fast and smooth, yet also includes wallpapers, extra widgets, etc. I haven't tried Flexreaper so I can't speak of that one. Both I have tried were smoother than Thor's IMO.

Other than Face unlock and the Acer ring, the leak is a full version. (vache has the Acer ring in his Rom. Not sure if they have face unlock working yet.)
My advice to anyone who is curious, do a backup and try it for yourself. If you don't like it restore your backup.
I'm running Lightspeed Beta5 now and so far it's running great. As mentioned before it is pretty barebones but if that's your preference it works well.
If you want extra Acer system apps , go here and pick the "You want the extra Acer system apps" , you can use them on all the ICS roms that are based on the Leaked rom.
Try them and USE YOUR Own Judgement.is best .
THere is only one real piece of advice that can be giving to Op..
You do know how to flash a rom. You do know how to read a thread.. My best Sis to read the User post in each rom Thread. (Something i have done). Then make a Decision based on your Opinion of what you have read. And flash the rom that best suits you. If you do not like that flash another. Just remeber to do a nand backup between each and you can try them all .Try them until you are satisfied with the rom you choose.
THE ANSWER IS There is no answer. Do Not Try to make it a Competition between the roms. They are all great.. ALL OF THE Development in the roms have been done by people taking time out of there life to make them available for all.. Respect that. Follow the flashing INstructions . be careful and have fun..
if you want the BEST User experience. With the least bugs. go back to 3.2.1 Fully stock..
thanks for listening to my two Pennies. oh well maybe 3 or 4..
Now im Going to take a Bath.

Yes it works, but I assume you have cwm recovery installed so if you don't want to loose cwm, don't flash Acer's stock update.zip. I suggest Lightspeed ICS over thors ics. At least it worked fine for me. Clear cache & dalvik before. Don't forget to backup just in case.

[Q] Most Stable ROM

Short Story: I need a very Stable & Capable ICS or JB ROM
Long Story: I have yet to flash my first custom ROM on the Acer a500. I updated to the official ICS then rooted and installed a custom recovery. The problem is that there are so many bugs in the stock ROM that get quite annoying. i.e. the screen flickers from time to time in apps, and the tablet has to be restarted. To fix them, I'd have to do a factory reset, but if Im going to lose my data, might as well Flash a new ROM.
I need it to be able to run the top games like Nova 3 Gta 3 Modern Combat 3, Shadow-Gun etc. as well as be able to run Office Applications. I understand you guys can't guarantee that they will work, but please let me know which ROM you found capable of running most apps smoothly. I use this tablet for work and entertainment, thus stability is important.
Thanks. :laugh::good:
Look in my signature, there is the most stable JB ROM but it is stll in testing!
The best ICS ROM is here:
MOD EDIT: Link Removed. Providing direct links to roms containing non-GPL kernels are against XDA rules.
In that forum you will find also Civato`s ICS ROM, it is also to find here on xda
m.
Just some info;
Posting links to roms containing non-GPL kernels are prohibited as per XDA rules. This is something most people know about already.
XDA has stable roms. However, if one chooses to install a non-hosted rom, one can't expect much support in the forums. Support would be better served at the authors site.
Cheers.

First off, I would suggest installing the Unlocked V8 bootloader along with the most recent Recovery. This makes it easier for a lot of things.
Civato's ICS roms seem to be the most popular as far as ICS for the A500.
Waydownsouth's CM10 also seems to be okay as well, but is still inwork as with most CM10 roms.
Both roms will use the Godwarrior OC/UV kernel, so if you need more framerate, it's there.
Also, you can flash one of the stock rooted/deodexed versions and OC/UV kernel.
EZTerry also has an OC/UV kernel as well which runs good.
It all boils down to how the rom runs on "your" tablet. Contrary to popular belief, not all A500's are created equal. Some have different revision hardware.
My advice is to try a couple. See how they run.

Definitely not to make you angry!

It's OK Mate. Sent you a PM.
The problem with doing support with a "non-hosted" rom, is that, due to the fact Thor uses non-GPL kernels, And some other encrypted things, a lot of people are unfamiliar with what issue it's been known to cause. Whereas most users here, use what XDA hosts, or they compile from GPL and Apache sources. Especially when it comes to kernels.
Which is why, if you run Thors rom, you will get better support at Thors site. Plain and simple. It's not that some people here will not try and help. I've done it myself, and quite successful depending on the issue. It's just that his roms are a bit different.

[Q] Android Revolution HD links not working. Any alternate link available?

The download links at the Android Revolution HD ROM aren't working in the original thread.
Does anyone have any alternate link?
Can anyone upload it somewhere please?
If you want a stock rom with root access I'd suggest Revolver. It has all the ASUS widgets you were looking for in the other thread you posted, but with a lot of tweaks to make it perform faster. It's (in my opinion) the best ICS rom that looks like what you got out of the box.
Having said that, the Jellybean (4.2.1) roms are pretty awesome.

I installed ARHD ROM. Went to their IRC and got the link.
I've refrained from JB ROMs because of the lack of Asus apps only. Also, I quite dislike the change in the bottom buttons, notification panel, etc..
I had tried RaymanFX 4.2.1 ROM v0.6 It was laggy for me. It's become better now I suppose?
About Revolver, should I go for it over ARHD?
The thread's too long and I wasn't sure about what Revolver Parts were being mentioned on the thread, so I stayed away from that one.
Revolver Parts were recently discontinued. Essentially they were just add-ons via an app on Google Play. When I ran ICS I used Revolver after spending a lot of time reading through each thread. It's the closest to the stock rom I could find and was pretty happy with it. I didn't go as far as installing Revolver so I can't say if it's better or not.
I'm currently using ARHD and am quite satisfied with the performance. I'd upgrade to 4.2.x sometime in the future perhaps. RaymanFX or something..
From your signature...EOS has come out with 4.2.x ROMs? Last I saw they were 4.1.x based. Or I might have missed something.
I had flashed RaymanFX's ROM but didn't like the changes made in JellyBean. So I switched back to ARHD.
Also, Camera etc weren't working back then on 4.2.x ROMs. If any 4.2.x ROM gets stable enough, I'd gladly upgrade.
