and you should use perm root
If you're on 2.2/2.3.15 still, you might want to update to 2.2.1/2.3.340 before rooting. Go to settings/about phone and check Android system version and system version.
how to root droid x
honestly i would just use perm root on z4. all of the phones ive ever rooted and the droid x was the easiest?wow i was quite surprised. I almost hope that the general public dont figure this out cause ill start losing money!!

Thanks guys for all your replies. WOW!! Super fast root! I wish my evo was this fast! Hopefully they come up with something like this for the EVOs. Unless there already is something.
Thanks again!!

how to root a droid x 2.2
I have tried many rooting methods and I found Z4root 1.3.apk to be the fastest and easiest way to root. If and when you use this app it starts looping and doesn't finish you simply perform a battery pull and retry the permanent root using z4root 1.3 again and it will work the second time. You may need to try a third time but in rare cases.
sorry for the super late reply. Yeah I mean like a Rom.

Do you know if there will be an updated z4 that will be available for when Gingerbread officially comes out? I used z4 and absolutely love it!

Make sure USB debugging is enabled before starting the root process. Are you using gingerbread or froyo?

Why do people ask that? Once you root, you can have ANY version of stock rom. Or run less stock roms. It's all win.No, you shouldn't recieve OTA updates once you've flashed. But root users will have whatevers pushed OTA long beforehand. Plus you can over/underclock, screen capture, do backups, and run RealHDMI with root.
Hey guys.
First of all, I am totally newb in rooting mobile devices. So maybe i've done something wrong.
Well... Yesterday i went to my sisters and her boyfriends house. He started messing around with my girlfriends HTC Wildfire, and he got it rooted in, practically, no time.
Then he started messing around with my X10. But we ran into some troubles.
He downloaded z4root and moved it to my SD card. Then he tried running it, just like he did on the wildfire, my sisters X10mini and his own Desire. We waited a little time and then z4root closed, and nothing more happend. We rebooted the phone and tried again. Same thing. Ok. We didn't go further there. Ofc he checked debugging and stay awake.
When we got home, i started looking for some guides myself, and i found a guide on xperiax10.net (can't link due to safety restrictions on this forum) But i needed to connect the phone to my pc, and download a exploid file. Then the rest happens in command promt from windows7.
It all went fine until i reached the step where I should text in "rootshell". Then i got the message: "Rootshell: Permission denied"...
Okay. I tried searching on for some other guides and programs. Then i got here. And now i have tried, if not all, then most of the guides here. Nothing in SuperOneClick works (tried 4 or 5 different versions), followed all the troubleshooting included in the guides (uncheck and check debugging and so on) and absolutely nothing seems to work
My x10 is running Android 2.1-update1, version 2.1.A.0.435
The phone is still running, but i can't figure out, why I can't root it. Want to get rid of all the pre installed apps and tweak it more.
Have i missed something, or is my phone just ****ed?
Any help is much appreciated. I'm lost here, and feels like i have tried anything.
/Kenneth
Hey, I actually went into the same problem. and from what i've read. other users running the same firmware has run into this problem. So my guess is that with z4root, your x10 is currently 'unrootable', try using that superoneclick one. Someone claims he got .435 rooted

So basically... If i downgrade the firmware, I should be able to root it?
And regarding the superoneclick. I've tried 4 or 5 different versions. And i CAN'T get it running. So unless i'm doing something wrong, i doubt that he has rooted it?
Try the latest flash tool (0.2.6). It worked for me. Im running .435. I hope this help. Cheers.

Have you tried a different USB port? Sounds like your computer doesn't detect that you connect the phone?
Hello everybody! I'm new to the forums. I also got a really big question to ask. Well I usually root my phone with Visionary using a TempRoot. Then I updaed my Evo Shift via OTA, or going to the HTC Software update thing and now I can't really root my phone I guess. Is there a solution to root my phone even though I have Gingerbread? If not right now, maybe soon? I really want to use the tethering app to tether to my PS3. PLEASE HELP!!!!
As of now no there is not. And it might take a while before there is one. Idk if your phone already came with the ota update, but if it didn't you could have waited cuz the same day the ota went live there was a rooted version here already.
Just about 2 hrs later it was rooted.Pretty much a fundemental, if htc or sprint push out an ota update it will unroot your phone.

You can use the sprint RUU to downgrade to froyo and then root it, worked for me, I'm not on my computer so I can't link it but it shouldn't be that hard to find. And instead of temp rooting it there's a nice gui in the dev section that will perm root it pretty easily then u can flash the rooted 2.3 update through CWM

Now wouldn't the RUU thing erase all the data on my phone. Do I need a computer to use the RUU thing?
You will need a computer but if you remember setting up your gingerbread update it asks if you want to back up your device on google..... Use ruu to go back root and flash a rom like cm7 and you can restore your device or you can use titanium backup to... Well... Back up and restore your apps. Also google as you know backs up your contacts. So you should be set.... Anyone else let me know if there is something i missed.

The RUU can be found in the Evo Shift wiki by going to the following URL: http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=HTC_Speedy
Luckily the RUU pretty much walks you through the process itself. You'll need the HTC sync drivers if I remember correctly in order for it to find your phone. You should be all good. Good luck, dood

I have not been able to do tis all day at work i tried 3 different devices and no go im starting to think that its not possible and you will have to wait for a new root.. (which is never a long wait).... Thanks to the fine people here at XDA.
So since as if we have already been abandoned by the Gingerbreak Project, what can you guys recommend to root my R800i without removing the ability to update the phone to higher Android in the coming months?
So you see I am really new to Android and I have little knowledge on unlocking bootloaders and the like that's why I stuck to Gingerbreak last month. Now that I have updated to 2.3.3, yeah everybody knows Gingerbreak no longer works.
I cannot consider reverting back to 2.3.2 since the 2.3.3 update really improved the battery performance and I'd still choose that over the ability to root on the 2.3.2. But then, bottom line is we really love our phones rooted.
So to cut the crap, anyone please recommend the best method to root the R800i (I would be open for tutorials) whilst preserving our ability to update to better versions in the future?
Ive not rooted or unlocked the boot loader yet myself as this is my first android device im taking it slowly but according to threads in the development section you can root and upgrade as long as you do nothing to the device before upgrading, root the phone then upgrade to 2.3.3
This means flashing backwards first obviously.
As far as upgrading in the future you will be better off flashing a custom rom if development goes well. Custom roms will take this device further than official updates will.

See here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1116090. Follow the steps and you shall have root on 2.3.3 . I have also opted to "freeze" the bloat this time instead of just uninstalling it, in hopes that when 2.3.4 arrives i can do the ota update again and still keep root.
Also @ -josh- rooting will not damage your phone so its safe to root. I am also a first time android user myself but following the steps in the thread above worked fine no problems. And even if it didnt you can use SEUS to fix a phone with a locked bootloader
I rooted my phone when i was using 2.3.2 and found a good improvement.
Then i updated to an unrooted 2.3.3.
Ive left it unrooted for now. 2.3.3 performance is better than a rooted 2.3.2 i find.
It would be nice to root and remove the bloatwarw and overclock to 1.5 ghz, which can now be done. But for now i am happy.
Aside from a few Gameloft games not working, 2.3.3 is outstanding.
Not going to root until something major happens. Only reason i can see to root is to clock to 1.5 ghz to get n64oid working better.
Other than that, no point imo.
i have already tried the 2.3.2 root then flash to 2.3.3 method to no avail.. i don't know what im doing wrong but i think it's because my handset's a HK one, had it bought by someone in HK then i am using it here in the philippines. i'm not considering flashing custom roms either since i can't trust others' hands playing around roms, hehehe.. sigh!
You can are not supposed to flash to 2.3.3.. You are supposed to flash your phone to 2.3.2 uk generic version. After root your phone and through your phone you go to settings /about/update software and upgrade it there without hooking it to the computer. Make sure that your bootloader is LOCKED, otherwise you brick your phone.

Unfortunately it didnt work for me. I only have one game in the list which was Asphalt 6.
Ive bought about half of them so there should be plenty more in the list but they are not there.

It's better if you choose to erase personal files.. It's an option that you check off before flash. That being said, nothing on your sd card gets touched.
