I discovered haxsync, which to my dismay, worked only until google decided to resync the ****ty quality pictures. I would have crisp pictures, then soon after the pictures would return to the 96x96 blurfest.
So this is how I downloaded and managed to keep my high quality images. In essence we are clearing the image cache from google and restarting.
Before starting I would clear the data +FC both facebook and haxsync if they're installed.
*at your own risk, I'm not at fault if you lose all your ****.
1- log into your gmail account and into the contacts list
2- export the contacts list in whatever format it defaults to
3- double check that the contacts list was exported somewhere
4 - if you're cautious, you may want to make a fake gmail account to load up the exported contacts list just to make sure it's really all there
5 - select all your contacts in the gmail contacts page and delete them all.
6- turn on sync on your phone, and let your contacts sync (you should have none at this point)
7-go back to the contacts list from gmail and import the exported contact list from step 2
8 - Sync this again on your phone. You will now have contacts sans the pictures.
9- open up haxsync, set up the parameters to however you want, and get it to sync
10 - open up facebook and make sure it does not sync your contacts
11 - if you have any contacts without pictures, open up their profile, hit the menu key to bring up "join" and find any other instances of them, and join them.
The point of exporting the contacts list is that the exported data does not include the low quality pictures. When you import the list, you import them sans those low quality pictures.
I haven't tried signing into a different nexus S or galaxy nexus, but hopefully signing up to an ICS capable phone should automatically download the high quality pictures.

Whoa! Going to have to try this, seems like it should work. Thanks OP!
ooh , nice
i will try it later dear
thank u <3
Looking forward to trying this out. My GF was freaked out when she realized all of her contact picture were all low-res and insisted I flash GB back...
it look nice..tq..
Thank you for good instructions
np.
Just repeated this process on my gf's Nexus S and it worked great. Worst part is having to look through your contacts to join profiles that didn't link.
Does this actually work? Once Google syncs the contacts again wouldn't it reduce the image quality again? Or am I missing something?

Thanks, will surely try this.

I'm not a n00b, so I wouldn't post this unless something was up. Haven't ever had issues w/ contacts' pics loading - specifically, their Facebook profile pic. All of the entries in my Contacts list are perfect - they have their Facebook pic on them.
Today though, in the native Messages app (hush, I've been a long-time Handcent user, prior to that, ChompSMS), no one's pic appears - just the default, androgynous avatar. Well, I should say that no one's pics but my fiancee's - everyone else just has the default icon.
I cleared Cache and Data for the Messages app. I also cleared Cache partition and Dalvik Cache via Recovery.
To recap:
- Facebook for MyTouch/HTC Sense is syncing live feed and contacts just fine
- Contacts in the Contact list show their current Facebook pic
- It is only in the Messages app, that I am no longer seeing contact pics
Any ideas?
i have the same problem from time to time... what i do is export my contacts to sd, then delete the facebook for mytouch account under "Accounts & Sync". Then I go to settings, "applications", all, then clear data under contacts, and contact storage. The only bad thing is that now you have no contacts. you have to import them from your sim or sd. Then create your facebook account in accounts and sync. Then link all your contacts to their facebook account. This is a long and horrible way to fix it, but it works for me. i wish there was a faster way without deleting all of our contacts.
hope this helps
Thanks for the response, One! It's not a show-stopper, so I'm going to keep on looking for less-invasive options, but if I can't get a resolution, I'll give your steps a shot.
I do a Nandroid backup regularly, so I guess I could just flip back a few days. I'll hang on though and see if something comes out of these.
Thanks again, One.
no prob, if you find a better way, let me know... i hate deleting everything...
Hello! I put the cyanogen rom a few days ago. I really don't like the contacts management....the list is ok, but the sync of the photos just doesn't work. Only some contacts are being sync-ed with facebook showing the right photos.
And the problem is that if I use a contact widget (for example photo contact widget or animated contact widget), the contacts won't have the facebook photo....but if I go in the contact list, those contacts correctly display the facebook photo, although of course if I go into the contact description, the contact itself has no photo, but it has only the '[email protected]' of facebook, synced to it.
Is there a way to make a proper sync? I don't want to use a photo for every contact...it would be just so easy to have everything working again like it was with HTC sense (everything automatic and synced).
Is that because the HTC facebook for sense is missing with cyanogen?
And also, do you have another ROM to advice? I am not sure i really prefer this cyanogen to the stock htc sense one....
i have the same problem with Cyanogen roms... is there a solution for this?
i have no idea...the way cyanogen manages the contacts looks really not that good...htc sense was way better.
anyway, the really weird thing is that now, among my contacts, everyone has the facebook photo but 3. 3 contacts seem they cannot sync the photo from facebook...i did it 3 times, i also reset the sync with facebook and then synced again....those 3 contacts just don't sync. i checked the names: 100% correct.
it is a bit annoying...sure not so important, but it is anyway annoying.

If the picture doesn't sync, try going to the facebook app and going to the person's facebook page. When the picture loads there, I noticed it also loads in my contact list.
As far as know, Facebook for HTC sense lets you sync contact photos, and remembers the link (in the comments). Facebook app only sync contacts that have their number shared in their profile, and you cannot manually create a link.
Cyanogen and Htc sense don't go together, so unfortunately you wouldn't be able to sync it the way you did with htc sense.

It will sync automatic as long as the name is the same. Thats why some are done and some are not.
Also if you edit a contact and then press menu then join if the name is similar it will show there facebook profile and you can join them.

I had a similar issue, and it seemed the problem was certain contacts who I'd previously (before I had the phone) assigned contact photos in Google Contacts. They were correctly linked to their Facebook accounts, but still showed the other photo. Solved it for each one by selecting 'edit contact' then scrolling right down to the end where it shows their facebook details, tap the photo there and select 'use this photo.' If the photo doesn't even show up in the 'edit' dialogue then I don't know.

Hi All,
This is easily the most frustrating issue I'm having with my phone. How the f*** do I make all my contacts just save to gmail, I don't want ANY saved on the phone, my phone died recently, when I got it back I was expecting HTC sense & google to have my contacts stored in their clouds, HTC sense wouldn't log back in (piece of crap) and apparently all my contacts were just saved to my phone...
I've been digging around and can't find anyway to move everything to gmail, the only way I know is to manually change the 'contact type' if it gets manually created.
Any help much appreciated!
Cheers,
G.
This may not be the answer you want but you will most like have to do it manually. The good news is you only have to do it once then it'll be on gmail automatically synced.
Go to contacts/menu/display options. Select to only view phone contact and then on your pc go to contacts in gmail and compare it with your phone.
You may be able to extract the contacts and import them to google but its been a while since I did this.
Does this make sense?

I think this is what you'll probably have to do. AFAIK theres no "move all to google contacts" button or setting.
You're kinda gonna be stuck moving them manually. After that you're good to go.
Contacts - menu - import/export .... this option is in contacts on cyanogenmod
Hi ...am about to receive my first android device ..NEXUS 4 (moving from nokia 5233) . Can anyone point me how can i get my gmail account ready so that I will have all the phone numbers and images associated with the contacts on the NEXUS on day one.
I have downloaded all the contacts from my phone. I was wondering if there was some software which will pull down all the information(email, birthday, photo) from the facebook and gmail to my system so that i can review and prepare them for the NEXUS 4.
Any other thing which I can do before it arrives will be great. :silly:
https://mail.google.com/mail/u/0/#contacts
You may add, import/export them there. From that point on, a Android device will sync with Google Contacts and sync them.
Facebook.. download FB app and u can sync it with FB (cant do it off the phone)
Apps: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1992163 good list to work off of to prepare what you want in terms of apps.
Want to root? Check out a sticky on how to do it (please dont use the toolkit method).
I suggest fastboot oem unlock (unlocking bootloader) day one. So if you do decide to root or flash a custom rom, kernel you can keep your settings. Whereas, if you decide not to unlock bootloader and want to flash--you will lose your settings and have to start over.
Recommended app if you want to play with your phone; Titanium Backup Pro (backup and restores apps/data)
First steps...

If you are currently using GMail to manage all of your contacts, you transition will be a snap. Since an Android device is so intimately linked with Google, all of that information will show up natively, assuming you sign into the same GMail account with the new phone.
Otherwise, if all of your contacts are in a different format, such as a CSV file or another contact file format, you will likely want to import them to your Google account using your PC, instead of your phone. Signing into Gmail will allow you to access a Contacts section where you will be able to upload a file to import all of your contact to your Google account. The Contacts section is a bit hidden; it is within a drop down menu, near the top left of the page, just under the GMail logo.
Good luck!

What your asking for like I said before is syncing your contacts with Facebook, it is done through the face book app. It cannot be done without you having access to a Android device

I suggest using haxsync to sync your Facebook contacts. It has way more options and customizations than the normal Facebook app and also supports Facebook calendar syncing.

Hi Guys,
I sold my S4 and now I own this powerful device since one week. But there is a problem for which I did not find a solution yet. I have high res contact pics in my google account but the G2 does only sync low res pics which makes me sick. I searched for a solution but did not find any. Does someone also have this problem? On my S4 everything was fine with the pics.
Thanks!
I think the only way is to 're do the pictures

I already tried this... using a new high res pic for a contact (on gmail)... but g2 syncs the pixel variant....
I can't figure this out either. Some contacts it seems to use a higher res than others regardless of the source image. Something wierd going on there.

this has to do with gmails api supporting low res pictures only.
The res was increased somewhere in Android but not in gmail that results in this phenomenon when resyncing.
A workaround is haxsync that can replace the pictures on the phone with another source such as facebook
Android supporting high res but gmail yet to catch up?
Something strange is going on here.. this gotta be raised to Google methinks..
Not really a g2 problem, but general android issue. Google contracts used to only accept low res pics and you probably pushed those to your address book at some point. To get high res pics back, you are either manually have to go through and redo the pics, or you can use something like hacksync. It'll pull the facebook profile pics in high res and has the option to push those to your google address book,
This is a general android issue and it will happen with any non nexus phone. If you set a high res pic as a Google contact's pic,it will sync to all your devices as a low res 96x96 pic. It only syncs the high quality one across nexus devices (as far as i know , coming from a nexus 4 after using many samsung devices and now the g2). Minor or major issue depending on the person. For me i can live with it but i prefer the nexus way
I haven't yet tried it on this device, but HD Contacts was a good workaround for this on the last couple devices I had this issue on: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jgarrison.hdcontacts
I can't recall where I read this, but I think this issue is resolved across the board in 4.3 as well.

It's really weird, all the contacts on my phone that I had starred were all in high quality, I never realized this until you mentioned your fix.
However, when I tried to star contacts and then delete cache/data in the contacts app, it didn't seem to change anything.
EDIT: IT WORKS!
Missed one step...
1) Star Contacts
2) Settings > Sync (this is the step that helped me ensure all contacts will sync with high-res photos).
3) Clear Cache/Data in Contacts App (I also cleared Contacts Data App)
4) Sync all your contacts back in and you got your high quality pictures
EDIT EDIT:
Make sure you clear cache/data in both Contacts App and Contacts Data. When I only cleared Contacts App, half the photos were still low-res.
When I cleared both apps and then synced, all photos were high quality.

Sorry if I was unclear, so if I go into Phone > Contacts > Settings (this is where you click "Sync Now") to make sure everything is synced before deleting all contacts data.
Is there a way to "Star" all contacts in one action?

I have noticed the same problem. Is there a solution other than getting images from Facebook or starring every single contact and clearing cache (that would drive me crazy)?
On my Galaxy Nexus using the standard contacts app all contact images are first low res after a new set up but after opening a contact for the first time the high res image is loaded.
On my G2 only the starred contacts have a high res picture while all others are low res.
Can I somehow install the AOSP contacts app to let it load the pictures or is there another work around?
