Super AMOLED screen "Burn-in" problem observed

I own both Samsung Captivate and Focus, both devices have SUPER AMOLED screen. Both devices have burn-in problem after months of usage.
Captivate:
I could see the notification bar on top of the screen with the fuzzy clock and battery indicator burn-in to the screen with very pale color especially very noticeable with a white screen! I also saw AT&T stores had these demo units experiencing the exact problem! I then called up Samsung to replace the Super AMOLED screen. Now it's fine but very annoying.
Samsung Focus:
I just got mine in Dec and didn't use a lot on that device. There is a very good reason why WP7 has to hide those status indicators on top to prevent Super AMOLED screen burn-in problem. I also checked out the demo units in AT&T stores, all of the Focus had Windows Phone 7 logo burn-in to the screen at the top left corner due to the static logo constantly playing on the demo mode.
In conclusion:
SUPER AMOLED screen's quality life-time is still short compare to LCDs. Given about 2 months of usage, 8 hours a day with static image such as notification bars for example, burn-in issue is inevitable! In real-life daily usage, give it about 2.6 hrs a day, your screen will be burnt after 6 months.
NEVER USE SUPER AMOLED SCREEN WITH STATIC IMAGE!

On my phone the screen isn't on for very long periods. Even when I am talking on it if near my face the screen is off.
How does this compare to your experience?
Does a phone in demo mode have the screen on constantly?

The only reson OLED isn't so widely used is because of its limited life span (especially on blue color). From what I read in the past, it is very difficult to get blue channel pixels pass 2,000 hours of life span. Not sure if AMOLED or SAMOLED made any advancement in this area. So, the precautions should always be taken. Let your phone screen on 8-hour a day is not a good approach. That's why there is a setting to let phone go into sleep and turn off the display.
My Captivate has been working flawless since August 2010 with zero image retention or burn in.

How many hours per day do you keep your screen turned on? I would give that minimum 480 hrs with static image to experience burn-in. No need to wait 2000 hrs of life-time in Blue Channel in AMOLED.
The life-time of the entire Super AMOLED is here and I'm also being conservative: 480Hrs to start to get burn-in issue using AT&T store demo units as reference.

I use skype and bluetooth headsets alot, so screen shut down may not happen at all until i manually shut off the screen. Moreover, using GPS navigation will definitely cause burn-in problem with static images such as the miles, eta, notification bar, clock, battery indicator, etc.
Android is just not a good OS for Super AMOLED. WP7 on the other hand is for Super AMOLED.

I'd estimate less than 30 minutes total per day (only counts screen on time). So, 480 hrs should let me use my phone for 960 days, or way beyond my tolerance for an *old* phone.
If I'm sitting in a meeting broswing internet or reading news using some apps, almost all of them are full screen and won't necessary have static images on the fixed locations.
Turn the brightness down (I use auto brightness setting) and don't let the screen on for extended period. You will be fine.

I have to agree. The metro color schem (black in most of the screen) is the best way to reduce AMOLED battery usage and lower the potential burn-in risk.

I have both devices and neither or them display image retention. What method or program are you using to test this?
I downloaded a flashlight app on the captivate and on the Focus so I could turn the whole screen white. I also adjusted it to other color,s still see no burned in images.
I've had my Captivate and Focus since day one when they were first released by AT&T.

Go to any AT&T cooperate stores to check out all the burn-in screens. For captivate I use screen test. It cycles from white, black, green, red, blue, and other pallets. I can garauntee you that all Super AMOLED screens are the same given static images and keep the screen turned on such as notification bar, full battery notification, GPS app.
If you don't have any burn-in problems that means you haven't used the screen long enough even you got your devices since launch.

The key here is to keep the screen-on time as short as possible. For normal usage, it will be fine. Will it have burn in 2 or 3 years down the road? Sure, but I probably have to dig it out from the bottom of my drawer to check it out by then. I'd rather enjoy my sharp crispy and colorful SAMOLED for 2 years than worry about burn-in and settle for murky, low contrast and washed out color of the LCD screen for 2 years.
Store demos are the worse case senario.

Very true! But still people really need to beware of their SUPER AMOLED screen. But for gamers...... make sure don't allow a static screen staying on for too long.

Well, I was reading an email yesterday on my focus and noticed that the smiley message icon was like a little ghost in the background. I also noticed the circle/arrow icon. I use orange on black mainly. I moved the tiles around a bit, we'll see if it goes away.

No, it did not go away. It's only visible on white screens, but it is definitely there. I guess I'm going to drop by the at&t store to see if it's a warranty issue, but I highly doubt it. My guess is I'm stuck with it. Since I use the black theme it's not a huge issue, but when I switch to the white theme it looks pretty awful.

Why beware? Image Persistance can happen on any screen that is left running static for long periods of time. In most of the AT&T stores that I have been in the demo units are set to stay up and running for which I can only assume is to attract people. This will cause the image persistance that you are talking about. These phones screens also get used a lot more than your personal cell will.
Use your phone and don't worry about something that may or may not happen. In two years or less you will likely have a new one anyway.

This reminds me of the times where projector tvs and lately plasma tvs exhibit the same not-suitable-for-gaming problem! LOL
That's one of the reasons I got the Motorola Atrix with its LCD screen!
My previous smartphone was a Nexus One and even though it didn't exhibit ghosting problems, I always tried to use it as little as possible and used the screen on its dimmest setting.
Now I can leave the screen on at full brightness for hours (like for GPS driving for instance) without any remorse!

Im a high internet user and txtin user etc.. and on my old galaxy s i had the qwerty keyboard burnt onto my screen and not i have my galaxy s2 i can see the same thing startin to happen. For me if this isnt sorted by the time i get another phone in say a yr n half, as much as i adore my amoled screens im defo not goin down that rd again, wat a shame they cnt sort this out, and they r makin thousands of phones and tablets with these screens, so not cool samsung

They have been trying very hard in the past decade or so. The main problem is the blue channel pixels' life span. Most companies have ditched their effort and move to other technologies. That's the main reason why there is no consumer TVs made of the OLED screens other than the $4000 Sony 14" OLED tv.
Unless there is a scientific breakthrough, this situation will remain for years to come.

Has anyone dealt with Samsung Tech support on this issue I just got off the phone with them and they wanted me to do a Hard reset. I tried to explain that this was a physical issue, but they still wanted to follow their script.
Now they have sent me a label to send it off but want me to remove my SD card. It ismy understanding that this card is bonded to the phone and cannot be used in a replacement phone if they send me one. I am going to call them back ut based on my previous conversation I am not holding out hope that anyone there will know what I am talking about.

Light blobs on black screen

Anyone else notice lighter blobs on their screen when a black app is loaded?
Try the night clock and tell me if you see any.
I use my phone as a clock at night and I just got this today and wow is it noticeable.

I also had that issue on my first unit, I had it replaced.
A quite bellow summarizes all the screen issues on the S2.

There's still a lot of subjectivity at play so it will always be hard to say if what's acceptable to some is unacceptable to others. But with all the phones sold, you'd still think if more than a few percent had serious screen issues there would be a bigger audience for this thread and the issue(s) would have become more prominent on its own. I'd like to think things will get better but production demands may continue to allow QC issues to occur at higher than normal rates. Something that's frustrating for everyone - including Samsung.
Someone said something about the technology being flawed. Here's two links to stories where Apple was/is trying to get SAMOLED for their products. To me, it just helps reinforce that the benefits (color, contrast, viewing angles) still outweigh the downsides (screen life, burn in, inconsistency). And I'm sure Apple's engineers fully reviewed both the upside and downside before considering SAMOLED so it's still kind of a vote of confidence in the technology.

I've had it replaced 3 times now, I'm on my 4th unit. I can exchange one more time before I have to send it out for repairs.
I'll wait for them to get a new shipment in with different serial numbers (all the ones i've had start with the same 4 digits) and hope i get clean ones.
I called Samsung and the rep i spoke to told me that they have not heard of this issue.
Well they have 3 units in their back room with this issue so they will see it.
I think I will have to take a long-exposure photo to show them what the issue is.
Fingers crossed the next shipment is clear.

I've seen this isseu quite often when I had my phone exchanged mainly for a different screen defect, just be warned though since you had so many exchanges some people here might not actually believe that you went through 4 phones because 6Million phones sold and all that jazz.
Good idea that you decided to wait for another shipping, maybe you can even get a refund and just buy from another store that has good stocks?

I don't care what other believe or not. If they want to see my receipt plus the 2 exchange receipts I have here in this bag beside me I'll send them a picture.
Regardless, I must be one of the few people who have this screen problem AND use the phone as a night clock.
I am posting this for information to anyone who also has experienced or may wonder if their phone also has this issue.
If you dont have it, GREAT! I wish I had your phone.

Someone else in Canada (Toronto) went through five phones because of tinting issues with the display. He too exchanged them back-to-back from the same store. If you've been going to the same store, and there was a run of bad displays, all the phones built in sequence could be effected. Can't you go to a different store and exchange it there?

Have the same problem, its like blobs/smudges that are lighter black/greyish. Not an even black color.
Its best noticeable in a dark room without any other light, not even the light of the touch buttons or top bar active (so your eyes are adjusted to seeing in the dark). Using this image I can see it clearly. Auto adjust screen power doesn't influence it.

I think we all may have blobs to varying degrees. The other day I looked at my screen in bright sunlight with polarized sunglasses on. It made the screen look black but you could clearly see random beige blotches all over it. In normal use I think my screen is as close to perfect as there is and when looking at a black background in the dark I don't see blobs or blotches. The "O" in AMOLED stands for organic which means alive. Maybe what we're seeing is a by product of the technology.

Well, i'm glad I'm not alone sorry that you have it too.
Hopefully I will get a call from the store when the new shipment comes in and the issue will go away.
I tried going to another store and was told DOA's could not be exchanged at other stores that they had to go back to the store it was purchased at.
It is likely that all phones at Bell at all the stores at the same time may well come from the same batch.
I can wait over the weekend. I bought it on the 1st so still have most of my 30 day period to do the exchange. after that its repairs only. trying to avoid that.
I tried to get back the first one I had as it didn't have it as bad as all the subsequent ones I've had. Once a phone is marked DOA it can not be resold until it has been reconditioned and put back through the system. Understandable.

I agree and I can accept some imperfections but I'd like to get as close to "perfect" as I can seeing that I had it in the beginning (WHY didnt I keep the first one?!)

Well good you don't see any blobs or perhaps you are suffering from a certain degree of Nyctalopia. Sometimes a disorder is not bad, see no evil ... Nonetheless the O in AMOLED doesn't stand for alive, just for a chemical compound containing molecules with carbon.
I must add that two Galaxy S (i9000) models I have looked at don't have this issue, at all. The screens are fully and equally the same black tint/shade. Taking a picture to capture the problem has proven to be somewhat difficult, but this old camera probably isn't really anything to write home about these days.

OCD is also a recognized disorder in which the pursuit of perfection overtakes one's life. If I had problems with my phone I'd have no problem sharing them. I've posted tons of pics of my phone in the dark, in the light, on grey, showing apps, and at every brightness level between 0% and 100%. I'm not going to apologize because I have a decent screen. Though I do sympathize with those that aren't satisfied for whatever the reason.

I dream of having a phone like yours.
I'm glad that all i have are these splotches on the screen in the darkness. it is not viewable at any other time and all other functions of the phone are perfect.
I can live with the splotches if i have to but would prefer to not. I'll exchange one more time and leave it.

I'm sure I'm not special. If you look at the low level of participation in the display threads either people have low standards or the majority of phones are like mine. Even within the display threads, 50% of the posts are by the same dozen or so people. In the other Canadian display thread a bunch of people from Toronto posted they had no problems. So keep spinning the wheel, you're bound to get lucky.

Obsessive–compulsive disorder is not how you describe it, perfectionism is. Some more of this perfectionism for a company like Samsung would not be bad at all.
It was not meant to be taken seriously anyway (hence the smiley). Albeit a joke, people whom suffer from night blindness will of course not see this particular issue though.
While I believe I did not post in the other display problem threads. I do have yellow tint and pink/blueish shade from all angles except from front. Which of course doesn't make it sound like a decent and proper SAMOLED+ display at all. Since I have a Galaxy S that doesn't exhibit these problems, it of course makes me a little disappointed.

I can not exchange my phone, probably because it was included for "free" with a Vodafone plan, even though I just have it a couple of days. The shop implied I could sent it in for repair but I am reluctant to do that for various reasons.

Not all phones are affected with the same assortment of issues but I find it hard to believe that your phone does not have any ghosting, its an limitation on the SAMOLED+, Im not saying your lying but I dont believe that claim either. For the yellow banding on the left side user to user and phone to phone subjective.

One of my thoughts also point to that a lot of S2 owners are first time users of SAMOLED screens, hence they dont know what to expect or have an entire low level of expectations. The S2 is my 3rd phone with a SAMOLED based technology and pretty much the expectation should be higher than the first generation SAMOLED right?
But all people say that these defects are expected are we are the minority as millions and millions of phones getting sold but theres no "internet media coverage" about it and they start bringing in other phones as a comparison when the only comparison needed is the previous generation SAMOLED.
I was initially very disappointed on this until I had my phone exchanged (Had to sort out over a dozen phones) and also XXKGx firmware alleviated the yellow banding, right now Im happy with what I got but I can be happier if the quality on the SAMOLED+ surpassed the first generation, The regular SAMOLED is superior in every way even if it was pentile. I just gotta hope for the best when the SGS3 and SAMOLED HD comes out.

This could also be a possible reason why Samsung has never said anything about the display issues on the S2, a lot of shops are refusing exchanges and sending customers to the service center and have repairs instead, probably Samsung has informed its retail channel that they will be replacing deadpixels only anything should be dealt with by the retailer.. well just a conspiracy theory =)

Galaxy S2 Weird Screenburn issue

Ive had this powerhouse of a phone for just under 16 Hours, Screen has only been used for around half an hour etc,
Ive just noticed some screenburn on the screen The four buttons - (Phone, Contacts, Messaging, Apps) are visible on the screen when I look at a grey-ish background (Such as the speedx initial bg). Ive been through 6 Galaxy S2s, Three of them had this issue - Is it me, or is this a bit weird? Phone screen on for only 30mins since it was factory shiny&new, and theres already light screenburn.
Is this a characteristic of SAMOLED Plus, or is this a faultly batch? (Im on my 5th replacement phone from Amazon due to various faults). It seems a bit weird, a phone thats cost near £475 inc has this kind of issue.

It doesn't look screen burn as it looks coloured. it might be the app you are running has transparency.

afaik, OLED does suffer from screen burn like plasmas do - potentially, but not that quick!

Well, it can happen. After a month i started seeing the same thing when pulling down the notification bar. So it's not app related, cause i don't use other launcher, i can clearly see the shadow of the 4 icons for a few seconds when pulling down the notification bar. i have proplems with colors like grey and dark blue

Seems like a SAMOLED+ limitation as you say. I was just curious, it shouldnt bother me much whilst im using my phone normally.

If the screenburn gets really bad, I suppose i can always just use the 2yr Warranty I have on the phone to get the screen replaced. Waste of an invisibleshield though.
Considering the phone is less than a day old, the screen might go really weird in 2-3 months - Which is what im worried about.

I would have to agree that the S1 screen is was a better display even if did have a more jagged edges on the fonts.

I have a similar issue in the messaging app, but with the keyboard. If I 'enable'(/turn on/whatever) it then disable it, it's 'shadow' stays there for a couple of seconds. It is however not a permanent burn in, so I think it's just the screen's limitation and it doesn't really bother me as this screen is still by far the best I've ever used.

wouldn't that screw up video playback though? sounds more like a software bug

I turned the clock on the notification bar back to 24hr , as i read/saw the AM/PM can burn in as they are displayed a lot longer then the 24hr digits which move at least every hour.

I just discovered this issue last night. I had been noticing a few lines here and there on my regular usage and I thought it was just a defective screen. Through the use of Terminal's blue screen, I realized that it wasn't defective.
I have a car dock, and use PowerAMP in the car every day. As you can see above, those burn ins are the buttons in PowerAMP. I went to take a picture of my SGS2 with my N1, and while looking at the blue screen on my SGS2 through the display of the N1, I noticed the N1 had the issue too!
I'm trying to run JScreenFix now to see if it solves the problem, but I highly doubt it.
Will Samsung even honour the warranty for things like this?

I have an SGS1 of 1 year old and my SGS 2 bought in may. Side by side, I will never exchange my SGS2 for another SGS1. Screen quality (colours and details) is by far better on SGS2. No comparision
I also don't see any burn in in both devices (keybord test, status bar...). Maybe some defective devices around that you just should exchange

If you want to test your screen or anything on your phone type *#0*# into the keypad
If the burn don't show up on green blue or red then its something else

I also have the same issue. I can see shadow of the System task bar. It was quite vivid on RED and it shows as lighter blue on blue colour. And on white it became pale white. Bright yellow as well on yellow.
I've tried various things like put the screen on full brightness on Black and Red and blue but still have the shadow there.
I will see if i can get my warranty repair.

I just wanted to confirm that the SGS2 sure can have a Burn In, as it was declared before as "Burn In Proof".
I noticed it while playing the recently released Game "Osmos HD". The game's color temperature is pretty blue-dark, and thats where I can see a slight burn in of the Task Bar.
Afterwards I checked my screen with various LCD Test programs and BAM - with low brightness I see slight burn in of the whole task bar. I can even see the signal indicator, the battery percentage and the spot where the clock sits.
But its only visible at very low brightness and a blue-purple coloring.
I called my brother, who has the Galaxy S2 as well, and he directly went and checked with LCD Tester as well. He, too, reported to me that he also has a slight screen burn in of the task bar, tho its very tough to spot. I guess, if you dont know its there, u wont notice it.
We both have our SGS2 models now for roughly a year, and the screens already seem to decrease in quality and stability.
I am a fan of Super AMOLED+ color quality and contrasts, but my 2 bothers and me have all the yellow tint issue, tho its not very drastic, and all devices start to get kind of a permanent screen burn in.
Its really sad to see that the otherwise fabulous screens already show its age. I hoped that Samsung learned from the SGS1's issues and user feedback, but sadly, it seems like they kind of ignored the fact that the Super AMOLED cant take much action...
My girlfriends Desire HD's screen (which was my phone before I got the SGS2) is still showing good colors. Sometimes I think about getting an LCD device again...

I think what most posters in this thread are reporting is Samoled ghosting, ie image retention for a few secs. Its not permanent, unlike burn-in, which some people may experience after some months of usage.

No, its not ghosting at all.
The taskbar image thats burned in is from MIUI. And since I am running either and Sammy ICS Build or Androidmeda for a while now, this image must've been there for longer than I thought.
As I said, I just noticed it yesterday while trying out the Osmos HD Demo. And its clearly the MIUI taskbar. Must be there for more than a couple of days already.

No screen burn on my Galaxy S2! Btw, been comparing screen to iphone 4/4s and Galaxy S2 screen way better! You have to have some sort of "telescopic" vision to notice resolution advantige on 4s... Who anyway reads webpages fully zoomed out? LoL... With magnifyng glass?? Contrast and colors advantige is huge on galaxy side....

For how long are you using ur Galaxy S2 now? Mine is running non-stop since a roughly a year now.
And yes, it seems like a permanent screen burn in on my end. Just checked again, same visibility of the probably weeks-old MIUI taskbar.

There have been reports of black spots when displaying dark grey or black backgrounds. It's a phenomenon that's been around on amoled displays for a couple years. Not a big deal unless you do a lot of black and dark grey viewing.

I have no idea if that is supposed to be normal with the SuperAMOLED screens but when I had my Galaxy S1, I really had to look hard in a totally dark room to even see a slight faint glow.. it was extremely uniform and no black blotches, same goes for my Samsung Wave.
Incoming wall of text-
The Galaxy S2 was a combo breaker though, I had a total of 3 replacements the first one really had great blacks.. in a totally dark room I had to put the phone THAT close to my face even to see the faint glow, but that screen had some yellow tinting, 2nd and 3rd replacement had random blotch spots and the 3rd one was even noticeable even with minimal ambient light.
My Galaxy Note also has those blotches but they are very very small and I cant see them with my normal movie viewing in my room before I sleep, Try to have it replaced if it bothers you, it looks like an eyesore for me but dont let my expectations be yours.

I think they all do this. I see this every now and then in a very dark room.
I guess try not to have a seizure and have your eyes lock open for 30 seconds, and you'll be alright. jk

I've had this on SGS2 , now I have it on my Note
It's not a big deal for me , I saw these spots twice in a month,so it doesn't bather me , the screen looks amazing all the time

I dont know if all the notes are affected with this but my Galaxy S1, Samsung Wave and first Galaxy S2 didnt have this issue. Absolutely deep dark blacks as if they were really off with extremely minimal but uniform glow. I was devastated to see it on my 2nd and 3rd S2.
It maybe normal for some but since my expectation was set high with the Galaxy S1 and Wave its not normal for me but on my note its so minimal that its not worth the risk of replacement.
But you know if all of us would be vigilant in not accepting these things, samsung might just step up the quality control with this but IDK if its worth the inconvenience.

i'm kind of feeling the same way. my galaxy s doesn't have any of these blotches or glowing blacks. i bought and returned a galaxy s2 LTE because of this reason. just purchased a note and am awaiting shipment. I hope it is something i can live with. i watch a lot of videos / netflix before falling asleep, and that is when it is really noticeable.

Well if you had an LCD the backlight glow would be much more than that is.
Go look at an iPad in the dark with a "black" screen, then come back and complain about the Note (remember, everything Apple does is the best of the best).
Yes mine glows too, and I have a 2 inch dark line by the left edge seen in pitch dark room too. The larger these panels get, the harder they are to get "perfect". If they only released truly perfect panels, the Note would probably cost $1600 as the reject rate would be super high.

Have it replaced if it bothers you, if you decide to just live with it then it means your OK with samsung selling you faulty or out of spec products.

True the bigger the panels the more defects it can possibly have, hence the 4" SGS1 and 3.5" Samsung wave never had these issues.
But we also have to consider that the blotches are out of spec and considering that the screen is one of the best selling feature on the screen but its also its biggest weakness to have such issues even how minor it is.

It's a tough line to draw, isn't it?
Part of the problem here is the Note is a new device, and I do hope enough people accept its quirks for it to succeed. I'm not asking anyone too, but I do hope they do. If there was a viable alternative then I would be more willing to be picky. But as I said in another thread, choose what device gives you the overall best experience, and live with its deficiencies.
Currently the note is that device for me, so I can ignore stuff like this. (helps that it doesn't happen much.). If this issue is really detracting from your enjoyment - then by all means, return it.
But the main point of my post was - this is a common problem, so I wouldn't return it expecting to get a better one.

Acceptance is a double edge sword, we accept the quirks at the same time Samsung can just slack on QC.

Not everyone has the same level of expectation though, on my end Im just luck the black spots are extremely small that Id have to really look for them.

I think the important thing here is the extremely low Screen Filter settings the OP used. I don't think you can really pick fault with a device when you're using it at a brightness well below normal use or the manufacturers intentions.

Anyway, I still have my Galaxy S I which I ended the contract to get a Note.
I have to say as far as the "blacks" are concerned, the Galaxy S I wins hands down and also the text/color is sharper and even brighter than the Note.
I tried to take side by side photos but this was the best I could do to show the difference. Both phones are at max. brightness

The pics do not do justice. In person there is a real difference. Even the capacitive lights on the bottom are brighter and whiter.

Its becoz of the resolution . Galaxy Has 480 x 800 and in Note 1280 x 800, their is a lot of difference in these too models. anyway Supercurio is working on color issues on Note. lets Hope for better result.

After installing Screen Adjuster free from the market ..I just upped the red a fraction [+3] to get rid of the slightest green tinge to my screen.
Then installed Voodoo Screen from the Market and set it to Native Mode... this has fixed 90% of the banding issue on my Note.
Now the screen is beautiful and can hardly fault it.

Coming from a galaxy s with a perfect screen i have to agree that the black levels on the note is not as good and yes picture quality on the first generation screen is better even if its just plain pentile and non hd resolution.
People who started with the galaxy note are easily blown away but those who started with the first gen need more to be pleased. I also started a thread about this before and got the same results on the black levels.. im hoping that hd samoled plus can redeem the samoled family.

I think it is an amazing screen!!! I love it, about it being less bright, god I think the note is too bright. I never have it on full brightness unless its really bright sunshine, and in the dark I wish it would go darker, but it won't.
And the black levels!!!(I'm sick of hearing about this in the this forum) some people are so anal about this, I mean I can only just about tell that the screen is on, on a full black screen when I'm in a pitch black room, which I did to test the blacks. So 99% of the time you can't tell, and even in a pitch black room as soon as theres a pixel of light on the screen your eyes adjust and the blacks look black again. Secondly how many of you that are bothered about this, actually sit in the cinema or watch tv or when on the computer, say oh my good the blacks aren't quiet black. I can pretty much guarantee that all the screens in your life aren't LED so why bother so much about it on your phone?

I also love the screen. No disappointment at all!

I worked a few years in an industrial R&D department and designed new products, but we NEVER would have dared to release a product with such massive quality fluctuations (problems) onto a mass market! Especially when the screen is THE major unique selling argument!
Fine that YOUR screen is fine for YOU, but sorry, your arguments are pure ignorance! You do NOT have this issues, fine, then why judge about their seriousness??

Jeez, dont buy a samsung nexus then because that thing is a mess. Signal fluctuates so badly that its kinda funny. Fake screen size (the android buttons are actually on the bottom of the screen, reducing the screen size to the razr. The sound is a joke, the battery useless. Match that with no sd card slot no hdmi and the headphone jack at the bottom of the phone and youve got a 600$ flop.
I bought it for my 12 year old and even he doesnt want it. He wants me to bring it back and get a razr....
BTW, i have a bad s pen and the trademark samsung pink hue in the middle of my camera but asude from that, i love my note. When i saw it in youtube early 2011 i knew it would become my daily phone web surfer.
I wish for the same phone with S amoled PLUS, volume and sleep buttons not across from each ither, no pink in camera, mute button (like iphone) and the sane type of notification light as on the samsung nexus, micro hdmi out and quad core

try the free wallpaper called "no wallpaper" by simplicity apps. The blacks that you see with that wallpaper are amazing and it is free. i often use my phone at night when my child is sleeping, so lights are off and dark and see pitch black screen.
have 2 htc desires at home with amoled screens and the note screen is way better than that. have seen SGS and SGS2 screens and the note is definetely much better than that.
also try the wallpaper (free and paid versions) of KF Flames or KF Flames Donation by kittehface software. the blacks on that are also awesome with equally awesome flame effects. prefer the stock setting than variations possible with paid version but bought paid version just to support developer as liked free version.
the screen on even the sgs2 is no comparison to the one on the note. is your phone stock version or is having different roms affecting the display?

ICS should sort out most issues as its 32bit colour .... (or it could be 24 bit not 100 percent) ,,,
no wallpaper works a treat ... also lowering red to 3
still some apps which are lower density look like they have lines on .. but if you take screen shot they are still there when looking on pc so its the app not the phone
this phone rocks ... never ever going back to the half eaten apple ....

If you are so worked up about the screen, why don't you get a replacement or trade it for a different phone?

The blacks on my old S2 is way deeper than the one in the Note.
Disappointing for sure.
But i'll take sharper screen over deeper blacks any day.

Well I was the proud owner of two notes this week, first one had a screen which used to tint between pink and green, so I got Amazon to send a replacement, which came today.
Alas this one isn't rendering the blacks properly and makes Black & White photos and videos look awful, pity as I'm a photographer and wanted to show client photos on the note (First note rendered Blacks great, just the white balance kept going off every odd second or so).
So two notes being returned, not taking the risk again.

I adjusted the red to +1 on my Note, and it's worked perfect
Much clearer now, thanks for that tip - I'd never heard of that app before.

I'm not sure how the black levels are perceivably different from one OLED screen to another, whether it's AMOLED, SAMOLED, SAMOLED Plus, or HD SAMOLED.
I mean, think about it...
All OLED displays are actively lit, which means that each pixel is its own source of light as opposed to being, essentially, active colour filters for a backlight, like on an LCD.
Let's go ahead an use 24-bit colour for the following example:
Basically, each pixel is able to register 256 levels of intensity per colour, which is represented by 8 bits per colour. And since you have three colours (Red, Green, and Blue), that's 8 bits times 3, hence 24-bit.
In the case of an LCD, where each pixel is essentially a filter, blocking or allowing backlight through, a bit value of 0 for any particular colour would mean fully blocking light, and a bit value of 255 would mean fully allowing as much light through as possible.
However, since the backlight in an LCD is always on, regardless of the image, the front panel isn't always able to completely block all the light, even on a completely black image. That's why you're still able to see a little bit of bleed-through, even on the best LCD's.
With any kind of OLED display technology, this is not the case however. On an OLED display, each pixel is essentially a microscopic cluster of light emitting diodes, and since each pixel produces its own light, there is no backlight whatsoever. Thus, on an OLED display, a 255 bit value for a given colour means full intensity, and a bit value of 0 simply means "off."
Q.E.D. on any kind of OLED display, true black is truly black in the same sense that when a light bulb is turned off, it's completely off.
So, if you're perceiving a difference in the black levels between respective OLED devices, it could be simply that you're not viewing a truly black image. The image might contain pixel bit values close to 0, but not actually 0.
