Best stock rom - Vibrant General

Hello everyone I'm gonna start out by saying I'm only asking this because I'm from the gs4g and my dad has the vibrant and wants a rom on it. Ok so what I'm asking is what's the smoothest fastest stock touchwiz rom for this phone
Sent from my galaxy s 4g using XDA app

Sorry mods I just saw that sticky
Sent from my galaxy s 4g using XDA app

Well.. "stock"...... ehhhhhhhh
If you want custom roms, theres a lot, and i'm guessing your dad won't be interested in updating the rom once in a while, so i'd say try Bionix, or Toxic, both are Touchwiz (ithink) and give great battery life, however they are pretty old, so there hasnt been any updates and they are not the latest firmware in the Android saga

+1 on those. I am pretty much supporting Toxic8 and a few of us are picking apart Deranged9, both 2.2's. Fishman has a Bionix redux that he has put together and tweaked. Very worthwhile.
Since I am sure your dad isn't going to maintain the ROM like we do, these are all solid builds with working GPS and 911.

Best stock and rom do not belong in the same sentence. I don't know of a stock rom that is any better than half of the dev roms out there.

Ok thanks guys I'll have to try those out for him and see what he likes

Now my dad just wants to get the official 2.2 update from kies but asked me if there was anything I could do to make it faster so what kernal do you guys recommended

Try Project V, looks stock but much better.

I've been using toxic 8 for a while but project v was great too, probably the closest you'll get.

If you are in vibrant just flash neobuddy ICS passion. This is ultimate
Sent from my SGH-T959 using xda premium

Go with a 2.2 rom like most have said. They are the most stable AND are able to dial 911 in any situation. Reason #2 would be the biggest factor if I were doing this for my parents. I'd feel absolutely terrible if my parents were in any emergency and couldn't dial 911.

Rooted vibrant on 2.1

Sorry guys but Im new to this, and need help. Had my vibrant on 2.2 rooted but couldnt get cwm so odin back to 2.1 , so now I want to be on froyo. Whats the best and easier way without loosing root? Thankss
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Best(only?) way would probably be flashing one of the custom ROMs.
So I need to flash which rom? Sorry noob here.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Could I go to rom manager and flash one of the 2.2 roms?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Yeah flash whatever(froyo) you want...recommend researching flashing first however just in case something goes wrong. Recommend Bi Winning V3 from the Development area btw.
You could also flash many and see which one you like more.
I like hearthen's (I think?) SGS II clone.
I just LOVE the way it looks and it's pretty smooth, if I might say so.
Also, TeamWhiskey's Bionix NextGen is one of the best ROMs I've tried... if you can stand the fact that it's just blue everywhere, it's excellent.
Personally, I like my shiny colors, that's why even if Im a TW fangirl, I stuck to SGS II Clone.
I personally like trigger, but just look around and see which one you like best. My set up is as follows:
Rom: trigger 3.0.1
Modem: kb5
Kernal: overstock 1.4.3
Theme: vibrant HD 1.4

Help me keep my Epic!

I've had my Epic for about a few days now and I'm starting to feel like I made the wrong choice. I chose mostly on the hardware, than the software. The battery drains like the phone has a hole in it, the TW UI is just bad and I can't use the regular launcher. I'm sure this phone would be better with pure android. So what should I do? ROMs, Kernals, etc. Thanks in advance!

Why downgrade? Go with Colonel Twilight and the Frozen revolution! It's nearly pure android experience. Only catch is you have to give Mystery a kiss.

Seriously though, did you try launcher pro or adw or any other launcher yet? Get a task killer, estrongs is the one I use. Use it. Move all apps that don't have a widget to the sd card.. custom roms IMO are still too buggy..
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA Premium App
There's definitely a nice selection of Kernels and ROM's available, take a look at the development section, read through some of the features of the different ones available, and see if you find one you'd like to try.
In the end, whether you keep the phone or return it for a Nexus, is all up to you... none of us can really answer this for you, because we all have different wants and needs in our phones.
And fwiw, software side of this phone can be easily modified/customized, so if you're happy with the hardware, then perhaps you should look into the software customization.

Well the kernel has tweaks in it that can save battery... I'd go with syndicate rom frozen with the genocide 1.1 kernel... pretty good combo for me, I can have my screen on for about 4hrs and I'm sure if you use the phone less you can get a few days out of it

Yeah the only buggy rom's are some of the gingerbread roms and there LEAKS... if you want a stable rom syndicate 1.2 is the one to go with.
EDIT: cyanogen is out but not a daily driver yet ie: many things are broken and they are waiting for gingerbread source.

A good tip to remember...if you do go the custom ROM route, some have no journaling. If you choose one of those, make sure you power down phone completely and don't let battery die or you will get force closes out the arse. If this my be an issue for you, get a ROM with journal on or flash the journal on mod after flashing the ROM.

Probably a dumb question, but can I root and install a rom w/o going on a computer?

Syndicate Rom. It's absolutely awesome and very few bugs with almost all features working that I have noticed. Turns the Epic into the EPIC!!!!
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Go with SyndicateROM Frozen. The 1.1 version needs updating ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1091680 ) on the ClockworkMod. The 1.2 version ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1131544 ) requires the latest ClockworkMod ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1115999 ). You need to flash modem to EC05 with Odin.
What I did was flashing modem to EC05, put the first CWM on the phone, then installed SynROM Frozen 1.1. After that, I updated the CWM, then updated to 1.2. I think the 1.2 is not full package (?) and upgrade from the 1.1 (?). Rodderik will update the 1.2 version with latest CWM. You can either wait for that update or continue with the steps that I did toward the 1.2 version.
Edit - SynROM Frozen 1.1 comes with ClockworkMod included. When you get it installed, just update the ClockworkMod (what I did was using the flash method with Odin) then upgrade to 1.2 version.

You had it partially right. Hardware is paramount simply because you can replace the software with better software but you can't replace what drives it. Root your phone with the new purple CWM and then give the Syndicate rom a try. What kernel you choose for it depends on your phone since they each take to certain kernels differently. I am personally using the second to last version of the Genocide kernel and voltage control with great results.
Think of the rom as a car's body that you can choose to option and the kernel as its engine.
I prefer Go Launcher over Launcher Pro and Handcent over all the others available.
If you want incredible battery life download an app called DataSwitch by TomatoX.
Make sure to enable journaling too.

I thought the same thing when I first started using tw... If your taking about the launcher I won't argue. But the rest of tw is pretty good. Built in task manager that clears ram, the dialer is dope. Contacts list is very functional, U can swype right on a name to call our left to txt. Also easy to navigate if u have alot of contacts. Hold your finger on the right in portrait mode to jump through letters, than if, lets say you know alot of T's when u get to T, slide your finger to the left and you can sort by the second letter (feel free to say thanks). If your in to facebook the buddies now and whatever other things are built in to the tw launcher (though if u change launchers you lose those widgets) activities in contacts links your fb friends, the... Does... And u can... With... And so on and so on and so on... theres alot to learn that u wrong in a few days... I've had mine since release day and I just found out... Yesterday... long story short, u only get one chance to trade ur phone in. Use the whole 30 days before u decide
P.s. u can change your screen brightness by long pressing the notification bar and sliding left to right. But u gotta have auto brightness turned off (thanks ↓)

Yeah I tried cm on my desire hd it was quite good but always went back to sense as I liked it, but in my opinion touchwiz is a bit more stock androidy feel to it rather than sense , so wanted to go all out and just try out stock android , so the cm rom, is it available yet? Obviously not stable I take it??
Oh I would also like to ask if someone can tell me is what's the difference between cm stable and nightly builds??
I think I can assume what stable means but never knew what a nightly build was??
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA Premium App
Its not 'stable' yet for sgs2 in fact the first nightly only came out today.
Stable releases are known quantities I.e set milestones whereas nightly builds have commits added as they're submitted... nature of the beast some will fix stuff some might cause issues. Pot luck.
Stick with stable builds (there isn't one for sgs2 yet) if you want something rock solid without the occasional gremlin or two.
I quite like touchwiz but always run launcherpro so rarely bump into tw!

To keep things closer to your dad's experience there's FishmanMod which is an update to a very popular Bionix -v 1.3.1 Rom. It will fly compared to stock but everything works and it won't be totally unfamiliar to the dad.

be careful, the GS4g and Vibrant may look the same, but their flashing procedures are a bit different. read up and then do it.
Adding on to xriderx66, use this guide if you need a reference when backing up & flashing a custom rom to your dads phone... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=849028
Since he's already rooted start from: "OKAY, I HAVE ROOT - NOW WHAT? BACKUP!!!"
If your dad is happy with the stock ROM (with the exception of the speed) then I would definitely suggest going with something like the fishman mod that is based on the stock 2.2 ROM. That'll make sure he still has all the stock apps and such. I used Bionix for a LONG time and was always really happy with it.
I'm gonna show him bionix and see what he says

I suggest showing him Fish's version of Bionix for the mere reason that Fishman is supporting it daily, while Team Whiskey is no longer.

Exactly. Once again, NOBODY can tell you what the best rom for you is. Everyone has their own wants/needs, and not to mention the same rom will not run the same on every single device. Try a few roms, and find one you like, simple as that.
I use the Miks rom and it run flawlessly
I've been running nitrous for awhile now. The dev is extremely good at taking requests and keeping everyone updated on his progress.
Thanks a lot for the suggestions. I tried nitrous but the battery life blew dogs. I'm in SOS 1.9 ics I love ics are there any other good ics roms out there.

I'm partial to MikG 3.11 (or the latest). Stable, smooth, decent features and stays pretty updated.

Anything MIUI has been awesome for me...So customization & runs fast, everything works besides 4g but I cant get 4g in this area anyways...Plus the themes change up the look of your phone alot!! BTW Why is ICS Muiu running Mason kernel the best? Does GPS camera video ect work?? How do I get video or movies from my phone to work on my TV thru QQ player?

I am an OG Epic user, and the biggest (only?) complaint I had and have seen with our ICS ports is that the lack of battery life renders the phone unuseable. Is the same the case with the Evo? I see a lot of ICS roms and folks here seem to like it, but I've flashed the Evo's on my account with some roms lately that score unbelievable battery life so I'm hesitant to change.
