Hi everyone
after browsing the bbs.anzhi forum I see that there is a lot of development going on four our phones. It is really a shame that we dont have these ROMs here on xda So I thought that if someone who understands chinese could post a short summary of the ROMs (kernel version...) and download links? I would do this myself but cant understand anything using google translate + I cant see download links on bbs.anzhi For example: geno´s CM7 is already updated to 20120116 while the version here on xda is still 20120107 + there are lots of others ROMs on bbs.anzhi like LiGux, different MIUIs/CM7s...
This one:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1453421
Was found on bbs.anzhi and for me this one is better thans the hauwei 2.3.5...
If you want to try some of them use Google Translate and translate the forum to ENGLISH (I'm Portuguese and if I translate it to Portuguese I can't understant a **** , but if I translate it to english it's readable)...
Go and try some of them and share your experience with us
But where to get download links? They are hidden even after i register
You have to thanks post to download as I remember...
Just watch out with these chinese things, geno's roms over there are not always as stable and have some weird chinese market...
There is also a modded version of Genos newest CM7 which has lots of fixes and mods added.. for .32 and for .35 it is called cm7rymod. I'll give it a try and report changelog. There is 4 versions available for download. 2 for .35 and 2 for .32.
And addition to that there is Google android version of CM7.
official changelog for CM7rymod from bbs.anzhi.com (Google translate):

Third, questions and answers
32-core version is almost perfect, putting a good, well envy. . . But do not wake up 32 core 35 core fast, light sensitivity is not 35 cores, 35 cores there putting problems, and the call volume is relatively small. So have their own strengths, we can choose their own.
Notes attached to 35 cores, 32 cores can take a look at section 3.
1, putting break the sound, press and hold the volume up and down keys will vibrate (so you understand how to avoid), are the original 35 core cm7 problems, being unable to repair, and other big update g
2, because there is no wifi, so I can not test
3, it was said that when the right side of the sliding contact list with black pieces, if you're concerned about, then you can remove the contact's display settings in the address book button at the dial-up options
4, some people ask why the rom more than 120 M, much of it, it is convenient for you, I integrated the rom special theme, the theme accounted for about 40M. Do not like you can streamline their own
5, G, 35 cores with performance similar to CM7, 3D performance, superior, Bunny ran points and CM7 is not much difference, not on the map
6, because the machine has been in the brush, so the power in the unknown, and CM7 should be similar.
Is possible to share soe links for download, print the. 32 version please because I can use the other.

Can someone, please, upload those 4 ROMs somewhere?
I formerly had tried to download some roms from that anzhi something site but I could't because everthing is chineese...

My "Perfect" Build v1.0 - Guide (Custom Kernel, tune, zips, apks, libs, sound, vids)
Below you will find a detailed plan on how to get the absolute most out of your Moto G 2015. I've spent countless hours testing and tuning -- coming up with the setup shown here. Its unbelievably fast and effective, with top tier battery life, and an amazing and unmatched sound system.
Requirements (all downloads listed here are found on XDA, along with their threads for support and security verification)
*Flashables* (All found on XDA)
-CM13 Based Rom (I prefer crDroid, but also CM13 Official Nightly, and Temeseks CM13)
-G-Apps Pico 6.0 (latest version. you can install higher levels of gapps if you so desire, but pico will work just fine)
-Inazuma R3 Kernel
-Optimus R6 Kernel
-PDB-ABS Tweaks v5.0 (init.d Scripts, build props, etc)
-Project Skynet Genesys TX6
-PMB SQlite3 Engine Database v5.1
-FeraDroid Engine v0.20 Beta 3 (*optional)
-Xtreme Music v7.03
-Divine Beats Dolby Atmos v5.0
-Bravia v4 and X-Reality Engine 13-16mp
*APKS* (All found either XDA or Play)
-Selinux Mode Changer (on XDA)
-Kernel Aduitor - Modded Version (on XDA - Formerly known as Singularity)
-Busy Box Pro 1.24.1-Stericson (on XDA)
-System App Remover (Google Play)
-Terminal Emulator (Google Play)

I would recommend that you start entirely fresh -- full wipe, then clean install the rom/kernel/and zips.
...Lets Begin!!
Initial Setup:
-Download all the required apk programs and flashable zips, as well as the latest versions of a CM13 stable ROM (I prefer CrDroid for all out speed and stability)
-Wipe (or factory reset), then clean install in this order:
a)xxxxx CM13 Stable Rom
b)Open gApps 6.0 Pico
c)Inazuma R3 Kernel
d)Optimus R6 (NOT R7!!)
e)Project Skynet Genesys TX6
f)FeraDroid Engine v0.20 Beta 3
g)PMB SQlite3 Engine Database v5.1
h)PDB-ABS Tweaks v5.0
i)Xtreme Music v7.03
j)Divine Beats Dolby Atmos v5.0
*THERE IS A MAX of 10 ZIPS in the QUEUE. After you flash the initial 10, you can flash this next one.*
k)Bravia Engine v4 and X-Reality Engine Port
It will take about 5 minutes to flash all the zips listed above, but trust me... its worth it!
-Once all zips are flashed, wipe cache/davlik, then reboot.
-Run through setup, unchecking every single option along the way.
-Once loaded to the home screen, be sure to make your SD Card portable or permanent. (I prefer portable)
Initial Tweaks/Settings

Next, run command #3, and set the mode to balanced for everyday use, battery for low performance/good battery backup, and gaming for extreme performance with less regard for battery life. After completing this step, run command #4.
On this menu, run the following commands:
#1 Xtreme Renices (Places urgent priority on principle processes)****optional*** some ROMs have difficulty with this. Heating issues possible.
#3 Scaling + (lower power use and performance during deepsleep)
#4 WiFi Sleep (allows quicker dormancy of the wifi during inactivity)

With that all said and done.
Its been a pleasure, researching all of the tweaks and tunes available. I'm sure that those who are more experienced than me have came up with better ideas, but for this hillbilly from kentucky... its the best I can do! I love this phone, and the performance it offers for budget pricing!
Sorry its so long, and probably difficult to understand. But I hope you appreciate the work I put into it. There's a few revisions I plan on making to increase battery life, with the help of xposed, greenify, amplify, wakelock tuning, etc. And I didn't really get around to talking about the sound lib and progs we installed. I can assure you, there's nothing placebo about viper4android 2.4.01, dolby atmos, xtreme music, and about a dozen or so libraries that are log proveable as working. The bravia v4 Xreality engine.... I just started using it, and haven't had time to really test it out... but it *should* give us an increase in graphic quality, especially in regards to pictures and videos. In the coming days I'll be adding a new section to further increase audio, productivity, graphics, and battery life. But for now..... this is what ya get! REMEMBER THOUGH..... SELinux MUST BE SET TO PERMISSIVE for Xtreme Music Libs to work correctly. You'll be grateful that you did!
Thank you for reading, and I hope you get as much out of it all as I did.
Have a great weekend guys! and gals!
Feel free to cherry pick, add, remove, tweak, etc. No negative talk. If you don't like my work, do your own build. But if you have something constructive to say, questions to ask, or thoughts to add.... I'd be super grateful, and pleased to read them! My goal is to get the smoothest, fastest, and longest lasting battery as possible... . blended into one neat package.
I'll have to try this when I have time. Thanks for the extensive list of tweaks and addons!
@bubbyj
Thanks mate, looks good.

I put the wrong entropy levels in. It should be 64-128 read and 128-256 write. That cleared it up on my end. Otherwise check your CPU settings. Down threshold 50-60, up 80-85, step 12-16, conservative gov, conservative hotplug profile, intelliplug active, touch disabled in all locations. Sync disabled. Boost 0ms. If this fails, post screenshots of kernel auditor, each section. We will correct the problem for you.
-------
Yes, the inazuma provides a few options that optimus r6 and r7 don't. And vice versa. And because optimys uses any kernel, it simply overlays its settings on top of the existing one.
R7 has 1401 oc, but loses the intelliplug hotplug. It also loses adreno idler. And has a r6 few unique features added compared to inazuma r3. So by installing r3, then dirty flashing optimus r6, you get a hybrid kernel that offers the best of both. You get all freqs from 200 to 1401, with an added 300mhz state. You get intelliplug hotplugging. You get GPU oc and under clock of 100mhz for extreme battery savings and retain the adreno idler. You get all of optimus optimizations and updates, as well as all the governors and schedulers combined. Its really an awesome kernel that results in crossbreeding the two.
Edited the original post. Made extreme renices optional, fixed entropy causing CPU loading (now 64/128 or 128/256, whichever works best for your usage). Also removed battery optimize from ABS tweaks. It works well, but may cause lags.
It works fine without skynet and abs but the moment i flash any of those two the cpu jumps ans stays at 1,4 ghz

Can someone just send me direct links to the correct version of each flashable files I need to download? I've tried doing this myself multiple times, but once it flashes the "audio enhancer" files it starts to say "unable to mount /data" and "unable to mount /storage" in the TWRP log, and when I reboot into the device, it takes a few minutes to "optimze apps" then it just sends me to the Cyanogenmod boot screen and it stays there. I really shouldn't be asking you guys for something like this but I've had to, multiple times, wipe my data and I'm just getting a bit frustrated since I really want to try this build. The problem with skynet is the jump in entropy settings to like 2048 or so, that automatically occurs on some phones. This causes the cpu to lock in at 1.4ghz and pretty much stay there, and loading at 60-80%. I'm going to be offering a brand new build based around the AOSP roms that are popping up everywhere. I'm currently testing it thoroughly. Expect a new thread with a smoother, faster, snappier, and cooler running phone based around this new platform -- probably by the end of the week.
It will include an entropy fix with it. My current settings are 1536 and 256 (read-write) and it does great!
And just one more thing --- along with the new build I'll be offering, I'm also working on an intense battery build. I understand fully that not everyone is interested in squeezing out every last bit of performance and instead desire a usable phone that lasts much longer between charges. I've been working on it off and on for about 3-4 weeks now and have found some amazing tweaks and mods that'll accomplish that goal. The hardest part for me, is being an all out performance nut --- I lose interest in increasing battery life once the performance aspect starts to suffer. With that said, I'm going to be putting my wants to the side and focus much more on the community.
MAJOR UPDATE INFO:
It has came to my attention in the last week or so, that the latest builds of MM --- CM13 based --- DO NOT WORK WITH THE INAZUMA R3 and Optimus R6!! It will bootloop indefinetly. Only versions of CM based roms from prior to about 4/10/2016 will work with it. I've read about it on a few other threads, and tested it myself. It DOES NOT work. It appears to be a problem with the Inazuma R3 Kernel (you can view the thread to see a few people saying the kernel bootloops on the latest versions). The developer is apparently aware and is working on a fix.
As far as the 'unable to mount' /data issue, this occurs now and then with flashables. For me, the fix is to reboot twrp back into the recovery. Don't reboot system. Just reboot recovery, then continue to add your selections. The one that does it most often is the PMB SqLite3 database 5.1 --- and thats about 99% of the time. Hence, I install it at the very last.
I want to apologize for the problems that people have been having, many were my fault and I take responsibility for that. Luckily, everything is fixable and you can always return to your previous setup without issue.
AOSP Version 1.0 will be released by Friday evening.
CM13 version 2.0 will be released shortly after, with fixes to all the issues that have been brought up on here. Thank you again for point the problems out, and giving this a try. See you guys soon!
Check this tool >> http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g/orig-development/mod-maxopt-battery-saver-tuner-t2955539/ it does miracles to the battery life and multitasking, before flashing put your phone on airplane mode and do a nandroid backup

Official mirror uploaded by @Dante_xu - it will soon be added to the official download site and it's already added on the official forum:
https://mega.nz/#!VgNCGJTD!y62XM6nge9OTkKMp-nRbZoGKYoHqGB0nYiLyxhbBN7I
It is worth mentioning that in this release, if we toggle the root ON, we can freely modify the system partition! No need for any custom files!
Does "Pokemon Go" app works with this version?
good update but remix os is still far superior.
@slybunda At what? I can also say my bike is superior without listing it's pros.
more stable and better 3d support
It all comes down to specific hardware @slybunda . On my devices Phoenix is more stable and has more features at the same time plus a better design. I personally don't care about 3D acceleration - android-x86 would be enough for games because those are usually ran in fullscreen, so no desktop UI needed.

I love your rom so much @Regnas I updated a port that already existed for the vzw gs4 just so I could keep using it for my own personal use. It's the best rom ever, 10,000xlove. Sorry that's a little off topic because it's not really the same rom. This is just the first post I've seen from you and had to shoutout some love
@tdct12 do have in mind that this is an official release by Chaozuo @Regnas does deserve the love for publishing it though

Has anyone had any luck booting this from USB? I have tried from USB and SD, but have had no luck. I was able to dual boot from my SSD drive, but it seemed to make my Win 10 OS lag a lot. I ran the installer and selected install to U, and let it install. I do have bios setup to boot from USB first and even tried it through the boot menu. It almost seems like the drive is not bootable though. Any ideas or thoughts?
Verification failed error 15. Any work around?
My X2 broke again few days ago and this time im up for new Phone because the cost of repair is to high compared for the value. Also i need more battery & a (better) working Camera. Also i need to re-new my Phone Contract, so i can get a new Phone cheap. Before i leave i wanted to share my experiences for new or senior users which use/plan to update to 8.1. This Phone is very tricky, so it may save you a lot of work ^^
--- HOW-TO: Get best 8.1 battery/experience + gps fix ---
~ During my time with victara, I tested all 8.1 ROMs for a long time, gone thru log's, tested a lot of other stuff's and this is my result: (if you want to use X2 as an daily driver) ~
~ This applies to mostly all 8.1 based ROMs ~
1. From system/vendor/lib/hw/ delete power.msm8974.so = this lib is not used by anything since long and it just constantly crashes EVERY damn time you touch the screen. After deleting, reboot device and feel the speed increase instantly.
2. If you're a not playing RAM intensive games, use the SwapTorpedo Magisk module, it gives much more speed by disabling zRAM, which in turn saves a lot of CPU uptime. Our 2Gb RAM are enough to run even 3-5 heavy or more Apps simutanesly.
3. In developer settings at the bottom there is "background check" you can disable it for allmost ALL user Apps like fb etc. Notifications will still work no worry, they go thru Play Services. Also don't disable background check for Playstore & GServices = will result in crashing loops (internally), also you should keep all the calendar and contacts sync open if you want that feature.
4. Greenify has not much power on Oreo, dont use it. Use Naptime for great standby! ( keep "disable on charger" for GoogleSync to work properly)
5. footej Camera delivers best results on this semi broken camera...
6. Put as much Apps into /system partition, because they are faster then (use "stock" GApps package) and reflash it with an updated GApps package every now & then if you update your ROM (maybe once or twice a month)
--> on startup Android automaticly detects if there's a newer version of app in /system & deletes the one in /data ^^
7. If you want fast and fixed GPS then replace the file in /system/etc with my attached one. (unzip it 1st!) Works on all ROMs for victara!
8. Our APNs list file is outdated as hell, i suggest manually edit your settings. --> in "type" add: "default, mms, supl, ims" (supl is for location services and ims for things like VoLTE config)
9. There is a wifi config file missing in /system/vendor/firmware ... /prima/HERE [i dont remember extact location], but you will see WCNSS.conf (or similar name) file which is 0 bytes... copy the original one from /system/vendor/etc/wifi/prima to that location & reboot
10. Bad in-call sound quality & low volume fix: open build.prop in /system
Code:
persist.audio.fluence.voicecall=true
change value to
Code:
persist.audio.fluence.voicecall=false
Code:
ro.config.vc_call_vol_steps=7
change value to
Code:
ro.config.vc_call_vol_steps=8
(stock default)
--> save & reboot. Profit.
12. Allways look if you can disable unused Apps in Settings BEFORE deleting them from /system/app or ../priv-app -> it can cause loops (drain)
13. for getting another hour SOT (tested on new battery, non original but legit one) use Swift black substratum theme for anything. "make use of your amoled"
... will maybe update list later
Most stable, bugless 8.1 ROM? IMO: MokeeOS, why? (good stuff)
-> based on latest LineageOS 15.1 sources, even tho they dont merge every commit from LOS (?)
-> updates every day, even for our chipset
-> EXT4 is allmost 3 times faster than f2fs
-> its rock stable, just no NFC, less flashlight toogle bug, best camera performance of all 8.1 ROMs with footej camera.
BUT YOU NEED TO MOD IT! AFTER EVERY UPDATE. (bad stuff)
- STOP it collecting YOUR usage/location data: download the App i attached. (they removed the option to stop it and added their own location & data miner lol)
-> in system tab -> MokeeSettings -> disable all of its services (stats updating & uploading services etc). It will not affect system, but theres no other way, because they really try to hide it from the user
-> you can also disable analytics from Mokee Pay App
-> after disabling the services, you can uninstall "disable service" app
Dont get me wrong, i dont like many things how they "manage" their ROM & source. Moreover they push their users to donate, for FOSS (=FreeOpenSourceSoftware, get it?). with the work others did, but rebranding, "kanging" it as theirs. (atleast they give credits to Lineage on github). Anyway if your are looking for a stable 8.1 ROM, this is your only choice...
Thank you all in Moto X 2014 forum, i will possibly go for OPO 6 (bad Camera) or S9 (bad Software support by Samsung), cant decide
peace! :fingers-crossed:
Thanks man! i followed your instructions! but i dont know how to do point 2, since i dont know how to install magisk.
Sad to see you go. Thanks for all your works to this aging phone. I still keep mine and I have moved to Moto Z2 Play. Hopefully,I can afford One Plus 6. But,it's not available here. Good luck with your new phone. I'm sure you will enjoy it more.

Yeah. And then you open the app & look for modules. You can test them - and thats the great thing about Magisk - if you dont like them, you can easily uninstall them like an app.

I do not understand, because some dev say that ext4 is faster and others say it is actually f2fs ... I understand the velocity that f2fs has, but this also brings instabilities to the system, while ext4 is more stable but not is fast as f2fs ... even so they still say ext4 may be faster than f2fs on some devices.the question is, for our victara, what is the best file system?

F2fs is generally more faster than ext4,
The firstly versions of f2fs(2012-2013) aren't very stable but now f2fs is very stable on the majority of device.
In other words
In general f2fs is a bad idea only if the original kernel isn't shipped with it(not our case)

I have yet to notice a solid speed improvement when switching from f2fs on ANY android device I have owned, plus this isn't the android chef's choice, the user is the one who decides this.
"Not the proper way to fix" - This is irrelevant and only applies if we have a proper way to fix these issues, the fact of the matter is that there is no official fix and these have yet to show any signs of conflicting with anything.
Most "developers" I notice are just creating a real quick build using pre-set instructions then sometimes cherry picking from other device's github sources. I am greatful that work is being done but it makes me want to boot into my old development desktop environment and show these cat's how to make something spicy. It's as easy as adding these fixes into your environment and then building the system image with these changes included, you don't even need to use the terminal to add most of these.

Just wanted to add my 2cents, about f2fs. I generally agree with you and also i read some deep-dive articles in the last few years. To keep it short: To be able to really benefit from f2fs,
you need to have HW (storage (eMMC) chip) which is optimized for it as well as the System/Kernel. f2fs was long in development like you say until it was really better than EXT4. But i think in the case of the Moto X2,
either the HW dont plays well or there is some other problem (i dont know which version of f2fs this phone uses). But what i know, from testing (a lot) and comparing results with an EXT4 ROM, EXT4 was ALLWAYS faster.
In (storage) benchmark apps, especially the random r/w, which is quite important, EXT4 was allways better. When i runned apps like SDmaid, (collecting garbage and doing DB optimizing) it was faster (allmost 2-3 times). Same for games like GTA or others which loaded data. I even mesured it to be sure, took many SS to compare because at that time i wanted to build myself, so i was interested whats better... (than my 2nd X2 broke:crying Anyway try it for yourself & you will see. On my old S3 mini, long ago the dev also updated f2fs version, but it still wasnt better than EXT4, i remember (Lollipop times)
To adress, "that these are hacks": I dont think so because those are doing much good and nothing bad. Maybe its not the most professional way to fix it (commit it properly), but it was the best i could do by then..
- delete power.msm8974.so - really this lib was not used by anything, i spend much time digging the Mokee Sources and doing logs etc... We used the AOSP HAL and the Qualcomm one was just bugging around... It didnt affect anything to delete it by then.. (dont know about now)
- setting "persist.audio.fluence.voicecall=false" its cleaning the sound when you speak to someone in a call using the 2nd mic - but it needs that all plays nicely together. I tested it using 2 phones from friends and off was much better, maybe on stock it works well, but on 8.1 custom that was not the case. Also i found by searching a lot around that many more maintainers disabled it on their ROMs because it wasnt working properly.
- setting "ro.config.vc_call_vol_steps=8" -> its the default value in stock ROM, which i extracted...
- GPS fix was inspired by commit to many devices, which pulled settings via framework - this is the "lazy" version, direct edit. Anyway it was way faster (navigation in maps) no bad stuff in log and secure now.
- about APN file - it was really outdated... & about the wifi file, this is the only one i wasnt sure, but for G3 and S5 (which both are msm8974, custom 8.1) the full file was there?!
ALL the other things are recommendations from me (like IMO), thats why the title of this thread. Last thing, for disabling zRAM (SWAP) it was allready discussed in many tech sites that this is absolutely useless in times of 4+ gb RAM. Also it sucks CPU. In Pie its disabled now. We are on the border with 2gb so its up to personal preferences....
Anyway nice to see you working again on this great device, which i really miss I wanted to better "fix" those, with patches, builds and commits, but my knowledge was to limited to do that so i opted for a diffrent way. Also our source was to messy back then, couldnt really get anything done... and im still learning. Then it broke and that was the end for me on X2.
I wish you all the best, maybe you can do some magic on that device. Peace!
EDIT: Sorry the grammar, its late here and just saw this and had to answer..

I agree with you, f2fs in itself is faster than then many applications fail to draw the benefits is another fact (however I'm trying to do a f2fs backport from 3.10y (not very simple because motorola has done many changes departing a lot from the original)),
to talk about the fixes
in PIE I changed the powerHAL to QTI version (which solves the problem)
about wifi config no need to copy it from elsewhere that oreo and pie only see it in / vendor
for the other things i see them as optimization that the user can do only and i have nothing in contrary
Good stuff. Thanks for this. Latest mokee seems to be bug ridden, but I flashed unofficial LOS, and I'm applying these tips. Substratum won't work for me, but otherwise I'm happy so far.
Thanks again.
Introduction
I have spent too many hours trying to find the perfect ROM to install on my Samsung Galaxy S6 phone. My goal was to find an ultra debloated ROM without any Samsung or Google stuff with the bare minimum. Turns out, it's impossible. I also wanted to use something new that went out of the normal boring stuff we are used to see. The ROM and Kernel selection is just enormous. I also needed to address a very specific issue which is to maintain the cell phone up to date with the latest ROM it can take to be stable and usable while being able to install the latest version of apps from Google Play. I have a SIM card but I never recieve any phone calls on it and it's an international card that I cannot use without high fees. It's basically used when my wife, from another country, needs to contact me via SMS. So phone calls using the default call app is just useless for me.
Apps that I excessively use
So here is the list of apps that I use, or shall I say, OVER-use:
Facebook Messenger (video calls)
Grandstream Wave - GS Wave (All my phone calls using SIP service)
Camera app (My wife is in another country for now so pictures and videos is our way of communicating)
Microsoft Launcher (the only free launcher having a good balance between customization and those notification dots)
Banking apps (2 major ones, 1 credit card app, PayPal and Xoom)
Games (2 to 4 mostly from AI Factory and 1 from Facebook app)
Facebook, Reddit and Discord
GMail
Total Commander + LAN plugin
Magisk (latest available version on GitHub)
AdAway (latest available version for ROM version installed, removes pretty much all the ads in my games and apps)
Google Play (Obviously)
Mozilla Firefox or Microsoft Edge browser (depended on my mood as long as I was NOT using the infamous Google Chrome or Samsung Browser)
Open Camera (Only on AOSP roms or Stock roms higher than v7.0)
Problems / Issues / Bugs / Missing configs
After all of my tests, here is the list of all problems I have encountered under which ROM versions:
No floating video call window when call is unfocused. When unfocused, other person sees black screen until I get back the video call in full screen focus - Facebook Messenger (Stock rom v7.0) this issue does not happen on roms higher than v7.x, floating video call is possible with v8.x and higher roms.
Dark mode unavailable or requires heavy tweaks to fake or achieve a similar effect in OS, example, dark mode in the system settings menus - System configuration menus (Stock rom v7.x)
Camera's picture taking is not syncing with flash, therefor, picture is taken WITHOUT the flash leading to dark pictures - Default camera app (Stock roms higher than v7.0 and all AOSP roms)
Lower than usual voice recording audio - Facebook Messenger (sending a voice recording), Default camera app (all AOSP roms)
Unable to see the internal storage of my device in Windows Explorer - LineageOS roms (some custom roms do work that are not pure LineageOS)
Bluetooth connecting but no audio is directed to the device - Facebook Messenger and all other system sounds and music (AOSP roms higher than v7.x)
Bluetooth causes Facebook Messenger to drop connection when in use with BT device. Once disconnected, call ceases to drop - Facebook Messenger (AOSP roms)
Apps and system a tiny bit less responsive - Facebook game Words with Friends, Home screen and configs (Stock rom v7.0)
Contacts not syncing - GS Wave (AOSP roms with Open GApps Pico and Nano)
Username and passwords not automatically filled from stored passwords in Google account - Facebook, Reddit (All roms)
GMail dark mode and dark mode option unavailable - GMail (Stock rom v7.x)
Some games do not install or simply unavailable from Google Play - Super Mario Run (Highly debloated Stock rom v7.0)
Initial setup crashes after configuring the first time wifi connection, Google's update checking fails (AOSP roms with Open GApps)
When resizing the DP from 360 to 480 in the developper options, keyboard does not stretch to the entire screen width - System (Stock rom v7.x)
Lack of keyboard customization such as enabeling the numbers row instead of integrating them in the letter keys with long touch - System (all AOSP roms)
Random reboots or total system freeze. Very minimal and rare, not enough to remember too much about it, but still happened - System (Stock rom v7.0 other than SamStock)
Tests
My phone: Canadian Flat SM-G920W8
As of today, I have tested Ultimate Nougate, Oreo, Unofficial Lineage OS 14.1-17.1, FlynOS, NexusOS, S8 ports Note 8 ports, ViperOS, Marduck, SamStock, DotOS plus many other derivatives of LineageOS 16 and 17.1. If a rom was not mentioning compatibility with W8 version, I'd try using a compatible Kernel which seems to make the roms work and boot properly but most of these tests were performed with roms that stated supporting the T or W8 variants.
First test was to actually go through the Install process which Ultimate Oreo and 1 or 2 others failed. The amount of failed installs is very neglectible. Next was to actually boot into the OS. I got a few boot loops due to Kernel incompatibilities, again, just 1 or 2 failed REALLY and a few others were my fault for installing a wrong Kernel. So nothing to mention here too. Next was to actually be able to use the Camera app without doing anything else. All AOSP roms failed this. I simply opened the app, enabled flash and took a picture in a dark place. Picture has never been taken properly. Camera flashes correctly but picture is taken AFTER the flash turns out. Open Camera with the Camera API 2 enabled solved this issue.
Is was now left with rooting my phone. Note that most Stock roms and some AOSP roms have their own pre-built root which I utterly hate. Magisk is available and easily installable and works super fine so I do not need an old outdated version of Super SU or Magisk pre-installed. If the rom had Magisk pre-installed, I'd simply flash the Magisk app over it before booting to be at the latest version. I also needed to install Open GApps on AOSP roms and configure it. This was much easier to do when having a first time NO OPEN GAPPS intial boot. Basically, boot the first time without Open GApps, then reboot and install Open GApps and reboot to system, this resolves the wifi issue.
After all of this, it's time to let Google Play update everything it has to before starting to use Google Play and installing our apps. Turns out that I hate pretty much all of the launchers out there. They all have weird lacks. Lack of options, lack of configuration or no support for notification dots or a payment is needed to unlock this feature, lack of icon and folder lables. I tried the major ones and I even installed the hacked version available as torrents and I was not impressed by any one of them. Microsoft Launcher is the best one I know that offers enough options to configure what I want AND enables notification dots freely. The only last thing they could make available is the possibility to configure folder background colors and transparency and icon styles. To my opinion, that's all that's missing. I DO NOT use gestures so no comment on this.
Verdict
I absolutely NEED my bluetooth to work and I need this camera app to work flawlessly. This means that I am left with one single option. That is:
Stable Stock (Touchwiz based) rom version 7.0 (Nougat)
I tested some nice ones but again, I run into some issues, therefor:
MY RECOMMENDATION: SamStock ROM
ALTERNATIVELY, My Re-Pack of the above ROM: SamStock ROM (Lightly Debloated)
The only Problem I fell upon is the download which required me to use a separate download manager to download this rom from Android File Host. I also am displeased that SamStock DOES include his own version of Magisk integrated inside the rom so after rom installation, I have to flash MY version of Magisk immediately before booting. This rom is also completely Stock which means NO debloating, Everything is there, from Samsung apps to Google apps. Knox is the only thing that got removed. So this is also a very big file to download, almost 2gb when some roms go far below the 1gb size. So it's probably the most space greedy rom out there, but it's also the one I have the least problems with.
Why not the other roms such as Marduk? Because they are not 100% stock, they are moded stock roms with the author's personal touches and possible kernels. The customized roms brought some awkward issues at moments and made the phone unstable with some rare but random reboots and total freeze requiring me to hard reboot the phone using "Volume Down + Home + Power". Some others just had a weird issue where some apps and games were not available to download on Google Play while as with a same v7.0 rom like SamStock, these were available for download.
As for AOSP roms, the camera and bluetooth issues are just too major to make the roms usable on a daily basis. Open Camera DOES resolve the camera image issue but does not resolve the low volume issue.
I hope this will help any of you out there to clarify your decision on what to install. I did my job in trying pretty much all I could download from XDA for my version of the phone. I recon that some exceptions may happen and that you may have not run into any of the issues I listed. Please feel free to comment.
