Need Stock-i500-VZW-Kernel.tar.md5 - Fascinate General

Hosed my Fascinate by trying to flash a recovery through Odin -> The recovery also had a kernel in the file that I didn't realize. Phone attempts to boot then reboots into recovery. I would prefer not to do a factory reset until I try reflashing the right kernel.
I am aware of this thread that used to have the file I need, but evidently the guy has removed it from his Dropbox now. Does anyone have a copy they can throw up for me? I think I could use the recovery image, too, but it is a little bit easier to find so don't go to great lengths for the recovery.
Will reflashing the correct kernel even fix my problem? I haven't touched /system. Should all my stuff still be there when I get back in?

If you have access to your sd card via windows, look for http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1459905 on kernels. The stock is in post 1 at the bottom with the rest of the links. Download it, copy to your sd card and install it via recovery and it should work. If not, find droidstyle's guide, download the CWM 2.5 flash that in Odin, then install kernel.

Edit: Got it. Thanks!! It's booting up fully!!
Nothing below this line matters anymore, but I am leaving it for Google arrivals. The problem I list in this post was caused by excessive copying of the files. I first downloaded the file from the internet, copied it from Firefox downloads folder to my desktop, copied it up to my LAN server, copied it over to my Motorola Droid Bionic SD card, unmounted the SD card and put it into the Fascinate for installation.
The RIGHT way that worked was removing the network component. I just plugged the Bionic into the PC and mounted USB storage mode, copied files over, unplugged, let the SD card remount on the Bionic, manually unmount on the Bionic, remove the card and put it into the Fascinate.
Thanks for being patient with me. Your thread is obvious at the top of the forum but I ignored that method because it was flashing zips in recovery, which I couldn't get into at the time. I got the CWM 2.5 to work, and I did make a successful nandroid backup (will a factory reset restore the kernel, now that I have a backup?).
I did try to flash both versions of that stock kernel kernel-eh03-GB.zip and kernel-eh03-GB_signed.zip and get the same error on both. I even tried with a different SD card:
-- Installing: SDCARD:kernel-eh03-GB.zip
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
E:Can't open /sdcard/kernel-eh03-GB.zip
(bad)
Installation aborted.
I've tried downloading the files again, too. I wonder if it's worth noting that I did previously try to mount the SD card to Windows from CWM. It mounted, but when I tried to copy the file over, Windows told me the media was write-protected. WTF? Haven't seen that since floppies.
I think I'm going to call it a night and if I don't hear anything else on this in the morning I'll just do a factory reset and see if that restores the kernel. Then I can reinstall CWM and restore my backup. *long sigh*
Thanks again, man.

Thats alright, dont worry about it man. Yeah it does sound like you need a factory reset. your phone isnt accepting the download. for ****s and giggles tho, try not using CWM to put the file onto your SD card, and plug it directly into your computer and redownload and transfer that way and see if it takes, if not then you'll definatly have to factory reset. Go here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1238070 Follow section 4 to return to stock. That should fix it.

Please note my previous edit. Thanks, again!

Help! Stuck in ClockWork! E:Can't open /cache/recovery/log

Using: ClockworkMod Recovery v2.5.1.0
Completely powering off and/or rebooting system from recovery, keep getting stuck back into recovery and cannot get anything to boot, even after restoring the very first backup I made.
Error is: E:Can't open /cache/recovery/log
What I did:
1: Rooted using this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=808103
2: Booted into ClockWorkMod Recovery and made a backup.
3. Wiped cache/data and tried flashing midNIGHT midNIGHT ROM v3.2 CW3/EXT4 AIO (Build Your Own ROM Edition UPDATED) from here: http://lostandtired.com/android-development (it seemed to install just fine!)
4. Tried to boot but it would not go past the Samsung boot logo
5. Yanked battery, reinstalled, same problem.
6. Wiped again, tried to restore backup, now it automatically boots into recovery and shows this error at the bottom.
Please help!
EDIT:
When I try to restore a backup (that I made before doing anything) It says:
Checking MD5 sums...
Restoring system...
Restoring data...
.android_secure.img not found. Skipping restore of /sdcard/.android_secure.
Restoring cache...
sd-ext.img not found. Skipping restore of /sd-ext.
Restore complete!
E:Can't open /cache/recovery/log
Please help me, I will pay you!
I just got this phone a few days ago... so I'm freaking out right now!
EDIT: I just installed Odin and booted into "download mode" -- downloading the stock tar now... I hope this takes care of it
Problem solved.
Odin FTW!!!
Your problem was that you flashed an ext4 only rom in rfs. You need to convert file systems to use midnight.
As you figured out, Odin puts everything back to stock.
Also, the nandroid backup and restore does not restore your kernel. If you are using to to restore, make sure you have a kernel on the sdcard to flash.
It must be going around
Man I am having the same problem you did I want to know where did you get your odin file from mine says it is installed but I dont see where to open it. I had my epic for about 3wks going crazy as well need your help but very optimistic
What are you trying to open?
If odin flashed your phone, then just turn the phone on and you have the rom that odin flashed.
relief
Prblem solved thanks guys
I've done the exact same thing. same phone same everything lol, but when i use odin, my computer doesnt recognize my samsung epic4g, i"ve restarted my computer and uninstalled and redownloaded my drivers twice. I'm trying the process with all the computers in my house, but in the meantime, could someone please give my some hints or tips as to what i could do otherwise?
EDIT: i almost get this driver error message "BlackArmor NAS 1D | no driver found"
Not quite sure why something so simple is turning out to be complicated. Also i run Windows7 32-bit

Same problem here. I have to use a different computer. You very well may have a an internal USB problem like me. Has nothing to do with Windows. Hardware problem. Find another computer to do your flashing with.

Nice!! Welcome Back
OMG, I thought I bricked my phone... thankfully I stumbled across this thread and also this video on youtube: /watch?v=pleE_tzmiMo
I was trying to install midNIGHT ROM when this happened... I guess I need to read futher on how to properly install the ROM (Unless someone has a quick hint as to what I need to make it work)
With Odin, It will restore back to the factory firmware and work just fine, but If I re-root the phone and try to restore my nandroid backup it just hangs at the Samsung screen again. Any ideas?
just advanced restore /data and see if that gets around what is causing your phone to hang. Were you running a rom when you did the backup? You may need to reflash that rom, then advanced restore /data.
And get cwm 3 to flash midnight and other ext4 roms. There is a different one-click just for that after you do the one-click v2.5.5.
Do you have links to cwm3 and the one-click that you mentioned?
This is my first attempt at flashing the EPIC, so my backup was not a modified rom. (When I had my Hero I had no issues at all flashing a custom rom)
When this happens I am have to reflash with odin back to stock firmware, as my backups don't work for some reason. Strangely if I try to restore my nandroid backup after the stock firmware is back on there, I get the same results of it hanging on the samsung screen.
Yes, as has been mentioned, if you're going to a rom that uses the ext filesystem, you have to use the cwm3. I don't have the link., but if you look up "Randy Shear" on youtube, he has a video posted on how to install it.

Problems preparing to flash ROM

My vibrant is running stock 2.2 Froyo. Lately, it dies silently and so frequently in sleep that I can't rely on it for every day usage. I've missed many important calls. So I am trying prepare my phone to flash another ROM. First, I got the phone rooted no problem at all.
Then the first problem I have is with the ROM manager. I purchased the Premium Version 3.0.1.3 and flashed the latest ClockworkMod Recovery 2.5.1.2. Upon rebooting into Recovery, there is, however, no Nandroid backup, just the normal menu shows up with
Samsung Recovery Utils -for BML-
.reboot now
.reinstall packages
.delete all user data
.delete cache data
.format internal sd card
I remove update.zip on the phone and on the sd card and retried and retried without success. Why don't I have Nandroid backup showing up to save the phone before flashing new ROM?
The second problem is with the Titanium Backup. I downloaded the free version and it works fine and could get root privilege without problem. Then I purchased the donated version and followed the instruction to uninstall the app and reinstall it to get the upgrade through the license file. The license file is read correctly and the upgrade version acknowledges that. However, Titanium Backup paid version now fails to get root privilege. I verify that other apps can get root without problem. I've searched all over yesterday and it seems that few people have the same problem getting root with the upgraded version, but no one has offered a solution.
So here I am paying but not able to backup the phone to start flashing anything. Could someone enlighten me about what I did wrong here?
Thank you.
For recovery, just select reinstall packages. Sometimes you have to do it twice.
For titanium backup, click the problems button to get the latest busybox.
You should be good after that.

What offdutyninja808 said, also check your Superuser app, click Titanium and tell it to forget it if it's there.
We'll get you sorted out!
I have the same set-up and I have the same issue. I've selecting reinstall packages several times. Did not work. I tried different, methods: using Rom Manager and AIO Vibrant Toolbox. Didn't work. At first it said said it wasn't signed, and I four a fix for that. Now It loads and says replacing stock recovery with Clockwork... but boots back into the stock one. Is there anything else I can do?

+1 Both Off duty and birgertime are correct. Most of the new roms will delete all things for you unless they say to do something particular (like some of the EDT roms) you should be ok, we are here to help if you run into further problems
If hitting "reinstall packages" don't take you to the clockwork recovery, also you can just reinstall the recovery thru rom manager.
Then once you reboot and if it don't take you to clockwork recovery, then hit reinstall packages again. Ya should get to it the second time.
I had this issue a lot when first rooted the phone and installed clockwork recovery.
Sometimes it will even boot halfway into stock recovery then quickly reboot itself into clockwork.
Also, just make sure that there is only ONE update.zip in there. So delete the update.zip using "my files" then open Rom Manager and choose install clockwork recovery. That way you are sure there is only one update.zip there then try the previous mentioned methods
Thanks for your advice. I still have problem with selecting "reinstall packages" in the Recovery menu. If I select that, it says:
-- Install from sdcard...
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Verifying update package...
E:failed to verify whole-file signature
E:signature verification failed
Installation aborted.
This repeats if I keep selecting "reinstall packages" again. My SD card is still the original 2GB card that comes with the phone. It still has plenty of space.
Thanks again for helping
FWIW, I upgraded BusyBox and could solve the Titanium Backup problem. However, still can not do a nandroid backup as mentioned above, even with the donated version. So I abandoned my plan to flash another ROM and stay with the rooted stock.
However, what a difference it makes when I replace the 2GB SD card that came with the Vibrant with a 16GB SD card class 10. The unit comes up faster, the UI is no longer sluggish as before. I hope that this was the issue that caused my Vibrant to die in sleep. I need to phone for daily use and don't have a lot of time to muck around with it. Maybe next year when I have another phone to use as main phone, then I can take some risk to flash without nandroid backup. For now I hope that it no longer dies in sleep. Thanks for all your help.
Just a quick note to end this thread.
Since I have plenty of disk space on the internal memory, I removed the SD which I don't need and the phone seems to become reasonably fast responsive with rooted stock 2.2. It's now quite usable for me so I have no more need to flash it with another ROM. People who complain about slowness of their stock 2.2 ROM should try to remove the SD card first.
Thanks again for all your help.

MT4G stuck at boot

Okay... my MT4G won't boot up.
I rooted my phone. I have s=off. That's not where the problem lies.
The problem is me being a dumbass. I tried getting the Netflix.apk app to work on my MT4G, and I read a guide where you had to mess around with something from the system file to trick the app into thinking your phone was a Nexus S. So, I tried that, and powered down my phone. Now it won't boot up past the "MyTouch 4G" logo.
I tried booting into safe mode, to see if I could go back in and change it, but it won't let me. Any ideas on how to fix this? Tried a factory restore, didn't work. Also not running a custom rom either - was still using the stock rom.
Reflash a stock-type rom?

This will kill root and S=OFF. I wouldnt advise until we know that he OFFICIALLY borked his rom lol
@OP, What exactly did you edit??
Also, if you dont have a backup, i would try flashing this, its the stock rom + root and its debloated.
Also, factory restore would help because it only wipes /data and /cache
whereas you said you edited something in /system
Hope this helps!!
Yeah that sounds like a better idea, just flash a stock like rom after wiping caches data and system. And once you get it fixed make a backup or two, always a good idea to make one before changing anything important in the phones file system.

Yep, and with nandroid, if something goes wrong with w/e system edit you are trying, you can restore /system only. opposed to wiping/reflashing or restoring the whole backup.
Basically, skv012a had the right idea here lol
And by stock-type I meant pre-rooted stock, maybe even debloated like Orange Glacier.

Tried to edit the build.prop file in /system - followed this guide and edited what it told me to (ro.product.model=Nexus S, ro.product.manufacturer=Samsung).
Also, tried to follow that guide in the link you posted, but when I go into recovery, I get a red triangle. I have to press volume-up and the power button to get anything to come up. Then when I do, all I get is this in blue text:

EDIT: Might also be worth a mention - I put my MicroSD card into an adapter, put it into my laptop, and looked around on the SD card. Found the "boot.prop" file that started the problem, opened it in Word Pad, and edited it so the "Nexus S" and "Samsung" were back to "HTC Glacier" and "HTC". Saved it, tried booting, but to no avail.
Which brings me to my next question, I have a boot.prop file in /system on my SD card, and a boot.prop file on the root of my SD card. Should there be two of these files? I looked at one in Word Pad, and it had a lot of mentions of CyangogenMod on it, even though I bought the phone brand new a month ago and NEVER flashed CM on it. Can copy/paste the contents of both boot.prop files and put them on here if it would be any help.

now the issue unrelated to that file. you are sure you have pd15img.zip on your sd card? it CAN NOT be inside any folders. formatting won't be necessary
Lol, wow. >_> I'm a dumbass. I was unzipping the file, and putting them into the root of my SD card. Not putting just the zip file itself in my SD card.
Deleted all the files off my SD card I put on, re-downloaded the ZIP file, put JUST that on the root of my SD card. It flashed it, saw the bar on the upper-right hand corner do it's work, and pressed the power button when it was done to reboot.
Aaand, still nothing. Phone is still stuck at MyTouch 4G logo, and looping over and over.
'Bout to download this, and try to flash that. Would it matter any? Or have the same effect?
Yea try that then report back GL
Nope, no dice. >_> Couldn't even get hboot to attempt to flash it.
pd15iag.img
Sorry about the double post, just wanted to bump this up and update what I've tried.
1. Someone told me to push a recovery image via ADB
- Tried doing this. ADB recognizes my device, but says it's offline. I'm guessing it's because my phone won't actually boot up. I have to go into recovery mode (still getting red triangle) to get ADB to recognize my device in the first place - once I do that, it just says offline next to it. So I can't push anything via ADB.
2. Tried flashing a stock-like rom
- Last night, I tried flashing PD15IMG and it did nothing. Today, I tried flashing Royal Glacier, but it didn't recognize it. I had it on the root of my SD card (nothing else but that on there now) and it still tries to flash "PD15IAG.img" even though it's not on my SD card and I have no idea what it is. :\
EDIT:
Soooo, yeah. >_> I decided to try a new SD card. Brand new, been sitting around the house for awhile. Bought it at Radioshack when they were on sale. Loaded PD15IMG onto it, put it in, flashed it, and now my phone works. I guess it was a faulty SD card? I dunno. Glad it's working now - thanks everyone for the help.

Troubles with Rom Manager and Flashing

I am having a lot of issues with Rom manager. Whenever I create a backup and try to back it up it refuses to work. It acts like it worked. But when I try to restore to that backup it says MD5 mismatch. I am currently running a froyo leedroid rom. I have tried to flash over to a GB Leedroid rom and a Coredroid rom. Neither of them work.
It says finding update package
opening update package
can't open file bad.
I am seriously annoyed with rom manager WTF is the point in creating a damn backup if I can't restore it at a later point?
Now my sdcard will not mount says its is mounted as read only and it wont do a damn thing now...
Bump wondering how to check an MD5. Still wondering what is up with Rom manager. Silly question but am I having troubles because I bought a different memory card for the phone? I did a partition and wiped it but just not sure.
http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/File-Management/MD5-Checker.shtml
use that to check the MD5. Obviously something getting corrupt along the way. I cant imagine its the memory card but Im not 100%. Hopefully someone with more knowledge than me will pop along shortly.

Hi I'm pretty new here so I'm may be wrong about this, but could it be a problem with Froyo and GB? It's like using office 2010 and 2007 version, may not be backward compatible. But I may be wrong, just a a guess on my part.

Looks to me like you've got a flaky SD card, certainly I have no problems creating and restoring backups although I am on CM7 but that shouldn't make a difference, first off though make sure youre running the lastest ROM Manager and Clockwork versions then try a different SD card.
Okay I am still having issues with Rom manager. I tried putting in a new sd card and it will not mount to the system. I hit mount and it just pops back up saying its ready to remove. I now can't reboot into recovery nor flash clockwork recovery. It said an error occurred while flashing your recovery.
Also I really don't like that I can't even take a picture or use my camera because it says it can't save to the SD card due to insufficient file permissions. Yes I have done fix permissions in rom manager. But it still wont work..
have you tried to do it directly in CWM?
if so, try to flash a newer CWM version (through fastboot, ROM Manager is known to cause some problems).
Hello iam also having problems but i am have my DHD freeze at the splash screen when trying to enter recovery, any ideas please.

ROM manager wouldn't prevent mounting of a new SD card, thats got to be a hardware issue or an issue with your current ROM, try flashing either a different custom ROM or a stock ROM if your SD card woes continue it's a hardware issue, if not it's a ROM issue but either way I think we can safely rule out ROM manager.

Try reflashing Clockwork recovery, either from Fastboot or from ROM manager.
Tried using ROM Manager but got nowhere so i followed this post and it worked first time http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1003723 , it was great for new guys like me.
But thank you for your help.
I figured out what the problem was. Even though I had formatted that new sd card it still wouldn't mount so I formatted it on the computer and now everything is fine. I don't use that other sd card anymore. I guess it was really just a bad sd card. So a word of advice to everyone that not all sd cards are created equal!
Thanks for all the help everyone!
Wise words there! I've been through 4 memory cards lol and each one broke. One after the other.
I use Rom Manager only to install CWM, and then I flashed all new rom by recovery from SD card.
I propose not to save a money on buying cheap card. It so important

Nook wont boot up

Hey, i'm new. Just made this account to get help with my nook. Anyway i'll just tell you all what happened because i don't know much about it.
There's two problems i have with it. 1 - Can't sync my google account and 2 - Can't get past the boot animation, keeps re-booting
BTW just got the nook color second hand yesterday, he said it had Android 2.2? on it, not too sure. He also said he did a factory reset on it, hence me trying to link my google account etc. As of right now, i'm not sure if it is rooted or has a ROM? or anything, i just want it going again.
Problem 1 - It was going fine and I was setting it up with the android start up thingy on the screen, but no matter what I tried I couldn't sync my google account with it to get on the android store. I could go on the internet and gmail etc fine, just nothing that needed a google account synced. I tried the usual fix of signing into YouTube using the gmail account but this still didn't link the device to my google account.
Problem 2 - Just last night when I was reading a book on it, it shut off randomly, I thought thats odd because it was like half battery, so I plugged it in via usb. Now whenever I plug it in to usb. It reboots and reboots and reboots. It shows the touch the future of reading logo, then a grey n, then the screen flashes yellow for a split second. It goes to a screen saying it is installing a new software update, but would cut out part way through and re-start the reboot loop. When i unplug it from the power it shuts off and wont turn on. I tried a factory reset and this started, but when it finished 'clearing data' it cut out and restarted the boot loop. As i'm typing it's next to me continuously re-booting.
Please help!! I'm a noob and need guidance haha.
But seriously thanks to anyone who helps
Joel
It could be trying to do a self repair of / rom and failing. Read about that in my tips thread linked in my signature. Look at item A12.

Make yourself a bootable CWM card as in my item A10. Then you can flash whatever you want. A new stock 1.4.3 as I said in A12 or partition repairs as I said in my partition repair thread. Or CM roms. Or the romrestore repair zip. Lots of possibilities.

So I make the CWM card. If i flash the stock 1.4.3 is that how it comes originally? Then can i root it from there, then CM7 etc? And is that all compatible with the 1.1 version? sorry for all the questions. and thanks so much! Any ideas on syncing a google account once i get it going?
Cheers
If you want to run stock, flash the 1.4.3 zip that I linked to. It is B&N's lastest version of stock (newer than 1.1) that I modified so it can be flashed with CWM. Then go to Manual Nooter 5.02.19. That will root you and allow you to install other apps.
Or if you want CM, just flash the version you want followed by the appropriate gapps zip. You do not need to update stock first, just flash away.
It is a good idea when switching types of roms to wipe first. You can flash my format 5,6,7 zip to wipe if you want.
Edit: After rereading your first post, you must get out of your bootloop before you can run anything. Just flashing a new rom may not fix it. If it does, great, but you may need to flash some repair zips first. And if you wipe, that may fix your Google login issues.

Sorry for my noobness but what does flash and wipe mean? Never done this before. I just got an sd card reader thing so i can write things on it with win32 disk imager. So to get out of the boot loop i have to flash? a repair zip? I had a look on the help post of yours, would 'NookColor-emmc-stockrecovery-CWM5504asAlt.zip' work? and do i write the whole zip file on the sd card without extracting anything? then what would i do? just turn it on? sorry once again you're a huge help
The first thing you do is unzip the file cwm-5.5.0.4-bootable_SD.zip. That will give a file about 200MB in size with a .img file name. Use win32diskimager to burn that .img file to your SD. Then that card can be used to copy (flash) things to your internal memory to either fix it or put new roms on it. If you put that card in the nook and boot up from a powered off state, the CWM program should start. You can use that to put new things on your internal memory.
Wipe means to format or erase things. Sometimes it is important to wipe what is already there before you try to put new things on.
Given your description of the problem, I would burn the CWM to SD, copy the zip named romrestore-CWMflashable.zip to the SD with your PC, put the SD in the nook, boot and the CWM menu should come up. Select "install zip from SD" and hit the n button. Then select "choose zip from SD" and hit n. Then scroll to the file you copied and hit n. Confirm the choice and CWM will begin it's thing. Watch for error messages. If it completes successfully, power off and remove the SD and see if it will boot. If it does boot successfully, you just repaired it. If it did not repair it, go to my partition repair thread and try some of those repair zips using the same technique.
If you were successful with the repairs, you can use the CWM SD to flash new roms to internal memory (stock or CM). Don't forget to wipe first if you do. An easy, surefire way to wipe is to flash my format 5-6-7 zip on my tips thread.
FIXED! Thanks so much. Gonna root now and then install cm7 or something haha, thanks again for your patience!
