Hi to all!
In my house, when i turn on the WiFi in my Atrix 4G the time necessary for wireless connection is 52 seconds!!!! Toooooooooo time!!!!
Why?
Maybe cause my router is set to DHCP????
Please....little help!

Mine is DHCP and takes a few seconds, so that's not the problem.
How strong is your signal?
Is it a faster connection closer to the router?
Is it a wireless G or N router?
Are you using a guest account, or more than one SSID?
If you "forget" the network and add it again does it connect faster?
Have you tried rebooting your router?

...well...my router is usr9108a, the radio signal is set to G and dhcp. Only if i set manual ip on my Atrix the situation is a little bit fine. I can't make other test now but i thanxs you for you support!
Good bye
its a simple answer really, and you'll understand it better if you look at it from the perspective of the phone.
the phone can't constantly be searching for a wifi signal every second. Hence the interval is predefined. Actually its located in build.prop I believe, and its usually around 45s, but depends on rom settings.
So depending on how you walk into range of the wifi and where the counter is at, you can connect instantly if it just rolled over 45s, or in the worst case scenario 45s. Of course add dhcp time, router connection time, as each router is different.
Imo waiting a whole minute isn't going to affect my life
Maybe adding your phone to your routers DHCP Reservation listing could help with a defined IP at home?

Mine takes forever to connect sometimes as well and I can be about 5 feet from the router and it still takes a while.

Yea, same conditions with me. Prolly take about a minute if I left it alone, but if I go into the wifi settings and click scan it gets it in about 10 seconds.

I have the same problem.
Sometimes it takes few seconds, but other times it takes 1 minute!
It's happened with my fastweb router and a d-link router(Wind infostrada).
I confirm you th tath the problem is still present after manual assignation of ip,sub and gateway (near 30 seconds vs 52 of automatic setting). With Desire Z stock and evEry set to default, only 5 seconds in my wlan....

I know you guys dont read anything, but you answer was in my post above.
if you're particularly stupid you can edit build.prop and set wifi scan to 10 sec if you want. Don't blame me about the battery though.
Long story short for people who can read: Wifi scan is every 1 min, to save battery, however going into the wifi settings forces a scan that instant.

You need to watch how you talk to people as you seem not to understand I can stand in front of my router turn on the WiFi and sometimes it says not in range. When you turn on your wifi it does do a scan then after that scan it doesn't scan again until it reaches whatever the scan interval is set for. Even when it does find the WiFi it is slow to connect, slower than my wife's aria and less range than the aria, slower than my inspire as well.

What you said has no sense.
Are you saying that all the phones that take the wifi in 10 seconds have a bad battery?
It takes 1 minute to take IP address not to find Wi-fi connection.
And this isn't normal.
Basically, the issue is your phone doesn't know it's in range of your wireless network automagically. The wireless network doesn't see the phone, and setup a connection.
Before your phone can connect, it does a search for a network. This timeout is what Cloudus91 was so dickishly talking about.
Your phone is just getting in range of the wireless just after it did a last scan, so you have to wait for the next cycle.
Cloudus posted how to decrease the time between checks, but you will suffer battery performance from this tweak, as the wifi adapter uses a fairly noticeable amount of juice.

Doh, I just got what you said.
Can you see any performance logs on your router? Looking for DHCP logs specifically.
What ROM are you using (Stock?)

I was wondering, is it possible to "disable" WiFi scanning once connected to a preferred network? I'm just guessing but does it use so little memory/battery to continually scan every few seconds that nobody has bothered to develop a script or app that allows this to be done?
I had a quick search on Google and the forums here but yielded little to go on.
I'm using a custom ROM atm based on Froyo 2.2.1.
Any help would be ideal. Thanks!

Unchecking this doesn't stop it from scanning, it just stops it from notifying you of an open network. It will still scan around.
I'm guessing the answer is no then?
Not to worry. Thanks.

Once you're connected to a network it does not scan for new networks unless you're on the networks screen and then it will scan for them. Close the screen and it stops scanning.

I would argue that. Phones differ for sure, but mine (Eris) scans for networks and puts an icon in the status bar showing available networks if I leave wi-fi turned on. If I then open the networks screen it will show me all available networks, locked and open, but it scans regardless. It does use battery power, but a relatively small amount.

It does scan, but not constantly. Something like every few minutes or so. Maybe it's just the ROM I'm running that does this though.
Yea, my phone notifies me of available networks within range, whether on the Wi-Fi screen or not.
While I appreciate the battery/memory usage may be minimal, with the aim of optimizing my phone, an app that could disable/enable Wi-Fi scanning would be great. Am I the only person who thinks this?! Lol.

I agree. I only use wifi when I'm at home. I also use Green Power, and that will disable wifi if 3g is enabled. When connected to wifi my ROM will still scan for new networks every few minutes. I'd like a way to completely disable wifi scanning.
@Davey Boy
I too wonder about this. Like you, when on the wifi settings page it seems to scan every 12 seconds or so even though I am connected to my home network. People have said that it only does this when in that particular screen but how do they know this?
I would like to think they are right but is there any way to prove it?
Please let me know if you get anywhere with this.
Yea unfortuately all wifi connections scan due to ip leases. Depending on the router after a certain amount of time in dhcp mode your ip address expires and then is re-issued. Another reason the wifi card pings the router to ensure the connection is still alive. So honestly to stay connected the wifi needs to scan.

Pinging the router every few minutes is different from scanning for networks. Also, lease time is normally 24+ hours, so there is no need to constantly scan for networks or ping the router.

Old topic but still interested. Any workaround found?
You can change the speed to a ridiculous amount of time. In your build.prop WiFi.supplicant.scan.interval should be set to a number of seconds. It is not advised to say change it to 24000000000000. Or something insane because if u lose signal it won't be reconnecting for you until that time is up.

Hey does anyone else have problems with the Wi-Fi? It seems that when I turn the Wi-Fi off and want to turn it back on it takes significantly longer to turn on than with my previous android
And I've also noticed that sometimes when I walk out of the range of any router it kind of gets stuck and I'm forced to turn the Wi-Fi off and back on
If anyone reading this post can just add a quick reply saying whether they have this same problem or not that'd be nice

Same problem here on campus.
Tried using "Best Wifi" and "Wifi Strongest Signal" but I don't think they've been helping.
More of a problem for me since I'm only using this as a Wifi device. (Not activated)
Do iDevices suffer from this issue?
Yeah, I have been having problems with wifi itself. For me, after I turn it off while connected to my home wifi network, I will not be able to connect back into the network until I restart the network. Anyone else having the same issue as this?

Yep, same.
To the op, I'd say either reboot the router (which you probably have done) and / or see if there's a firmware update for the router.
If no cure, call your internet provider.

I have seen this before. It happens in mixed networks (old B laptop used to crash the WiFi AP when G clients were also connected).
1) Check for a firmware update to your router. This is most likely where your issue is. The router speed should drop and increase as needed, but buggy firmware may only keep in last slowest speed until a reboot.
2) Mixed encryption (WPA & WPA2) is a nightmare Force "WPA2 only with AES only" -or- "WPA only with TKIP only". Some clients may try to use WPA with AES and this was what was crashing my AP at the time.
3) If you still have issues, try using "G&N" only, or even force G only. Some older G clients don't hear N traffic, so they just transmit on top of it.
4) Last resort, look for a used router that can run DD-WRT firmware. Personally, I will never go back to OEM router firmware.
Hope this helps...

Hi every one. I just got my N4 last week and i experiense the exact same thing!!!!
this is realy bad because every time i use the wireless network every body in the house starts complaining because my N4 shuts down all connections here.
It works alright with the main router wich is a thomson. but it fails with the other two routers (that are Belkin - N) that are only access points!
I realy want this fixed because not having internet at home is quite bad!
Hey kids.
I came from the S3 the beginning of November. One of the "new" annoyances I've come across is a notification that the wifi connection Internet speed is too slow. Which is bull. The only way to reconnect after that is to reboot. Sometimes enabling airplane mode does it as well. So my question is twofold. Has anyone else come across this? Has anyone figured out how to turn this stupid setting off?
Thanks in advance.

Thanks. Actually did the power save to off this morning. Happened again this afternoon. As far as switch to 5ghz, I've found that my wifi signal's reach gets cut by about 20-30 feet on that band. Which means I lose reception in part of my basement. I can move my router more centrally in the house, but overall speed suffers (goes from a solid 8-10mbps connection to about 1.5 mbps) cuz the wiring to that receptical is sketchy.
I can get that stupid message in the same room as the router.

yeah 5ghz band will cut your signal strength in half probably. Maybe buy a dual band wireless access point? Its wierd that your speed goes down on 5ghz. Mine practically doubled on my note 3. that's ridiculous... buy another router or access point? Its the phone, not the internet, when you get the notification when you're right next to the router. The Note 3 is the only device on my house giving me Wi-Fi issues. Sorry I don't mean to sound like an arse, but it seems silly to buy a phone and have to replace your router, when everything else works just fine with the WiFi signal.
Just to clear up, speed goes down when I connect to the other phone plug. So my router (brand new, furnished by internet provider) is on one side of my house. And this happened before moving in mid Nov as well. Before was cable Internet, now dsl. It's the best thing I can get @ current location.
I'm not sure if it will actually solve anything, but I received the latest update ota. Tomorrow gonna download latest firmware and flash via odin avter wiping everything with safestrap.

Kancerstick pretty much had it right. Rather than switching the band from direct 2.4 to 5.0 though, go into your router settings and look for a setting that says "channel".
What channel are you running on? There are 1-11 channels, try different ones or the idea is to find the one that matches the channel of the phone/client device

The one solution that did work for me was to go into the WIFI Settings -> Advanced option under the menu key -> Uncheck the "Auto network switch" option. I haven't had any further issues with that message so far.
tried everything...
I think I have tried everything on this issue. I got my note 3 a few days ago and it will not keep a stable network connection. tried:
1. uncheck the auto switch
2. turn off mobile networks
3. turn off wifi when sleeping
4 changed my router to static ip and not DCHP
5. forget and reconnect to network
6. reset router
I don't thing I can change my router settings anymore or I will have issues with other equipment
I am sitting right next to my router and everything else works fine but my note 3 will not keep a connection. I keep running speed test and half the time it works and half the time I get a no connection error.
Any other thoughts? Should I try another unit?
It seems my note use quite long time (apparently 1 min) to connect to a Wi-Fi. I try several networks with the same result. My Z2 and s4 connects straight away. Anybody else have this problem?
Edit: After several tests I can say that the average connection time (from I turn wi-fi on and until connection is established) is 25 seconds!!!! My Z2 is 5 sec. and my Z2 tablet is 7 sec. What are your times?
Tested on 3 different wi-fi networks today and still all taking long time for connecting
Have not heard of this problem. Try resetting the phone and nothing is solved, then might be hardware defect. Use warranty or find a way to get a replacement would be my best guess.
I reset the phone - and I try to time how long time for connecting to the wi-fi (only have 3 wi-fi networks in range) It take 25-30 sek to connect - is this normal? Every time I turn on wi-fi the box with networks available come in.... Everybody get this?

I think it depends on the hotspot you're connecting to. It's instant at home because it's a personal network, while in a university it's a more complicated structure with thousands of users connected at the same time. So I don't think there's anything wrong with your phone, it's more the networks you're connecting to. You other phones may connect quicker due to compatibility between modem and router.

It's probably a matter of compatibility between the Note 4 modem and your router. So long as it connects and the speeds are the expected, you have nothing to worry about.

Thanks - but I already tried to turn off and on the router.
After a bit more testing I found that it is actually the "start up" time for the wi-fi that's taking time - and not the connection time. If I change wi-fi network while the WiFi is on I nearly get instantly connection on all networks. So the question is if your start up time for WiFi also is 20 seconds???
I had this problem couple days ago. Restarted my phone and problem was gone.
Tried to change to a static IP Address - but nothing changes ?
