Finally got a NC again, and I'm trying to get caught up on all the happenings since I stopped keeping up with everything on here. What's the state of kernels and fixing SOD in CM9? Should I install one of Dalingrins kernels for the ICS nightlies, or just run the stock one? Will that allow me to OC?
Also, I remember having to change around a few things in CM7 to fix SOD, is that currently fixed in the latest ICS nightlies by samiam, or is there something I need to do on my own?
Definitely looking forward to getting back into the NC world, but I gotta get caught up with all the new developments, so much happened while I was gone!
I used to have that problem a lot on CM7 but I haven't had a SOD problem since swiching to CM9.
Why don't you try updating the the latest nightly.
Yeah, finally got my wifi working on the latest ICS nightly, so we'll see what happens from here. Thanks for the reply.

SOD is killing me, happens daily
running stock cm9
on samiam's directory, there's a wifi-sod-patch in the misc folder, but i didn't find it did too much. Wiping the boot, cache and system in recovery and installing the nightly back on fixed it for me

Just wondering what ROM people say is the most stable and dependable. I've heard 201 is the best out right now. Opinions?

At the moment I'd say the most problem free is MiRaGe. None of the stables or nightlies have the latest SOD fix in plus other fixes for things like phone signal icon showing up.
MiRaGe has these fixes in plus some other optimizations.

+1 for MiRaGe.
Merry Christmas
MiRaGe for me with the mods suggested. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1344873
+1 MiRaGe.
Since no more official CM nightlies are coming, I've also started using Mirage off SD boot. No problems so far.

I have done 2 Nooks with this and have found it pretty good except I can't seem to apply updates per the normal process. Haven't needed to yet (didn't use the updated theme because it wouldn't apply)
@bobstro CM tweeted awhile back (shortly after AOSP released ICS source 4.0.1) that stable CM 7.2 was in the works still. I believe they are finalizing stability issues while also working on the new CM9 simultaneously. It's just that most devs are playing with the new source right now, getting preliminary work done to set up CM9.
But as far as recommendations go, Mirage Kang is solid. Just be sure to rename phone.apk to phone.apk.bak for increased battery life.
I also recommend LauncherPro, however, with this ROM, I cannot get versions newer than 0.8.3 to install.

I'll definitely check it out when it becomes available. n253 was giving me grief that Mirage seems to have cleared up in the meantime!

I'm definitely looking forward to checking out CM9 as well.
Ok, so I had to get a new phone after a failed OTA update, that the ATT Service Center knew nothing about.... yes the 4.5.141 update. I had Alien #4 on my phone before and I am looking for something else, just to try (yes i was rooted, ROMed, and unlocked and they just handed me a new phone). I didnt have any issues with Alien, just want to try something different. I would like to install the CM7, but I use my fingerprint scanner. I searched the main CM7 thread to see if it has been fixed and there were no returns. So, if CM7 has a working fingerprint scanner, i would install that... otherwise, what would you suggest?
Currently running: android ver 2.3.4 system version 4.5.91 baseband N_01.77.30P Kernel 2.6.32.9
I plan on rooting and ROMing this weekend!
I'm not super up-to-date with what all the ROMs have, but I don't think very many have the finger print scanner working, so if that's important to you stick with Alien. Otherwise, I'm currently on Jokersax's ICS CM9 and loving it! Its looking great and is getting better updates almost daily. Definitely something to look at, if you interested in ICS at least. MIUI also finally got official support and is getting weekly updates, so that's something to look in to a bit too.
Good luck with whatever you choose, there really is no wrong choice when it comes to the awesome developers in these forums!

CM7 Weekly has Fingerprint
There's also Neutrino based off of the weekly and also has it.
I recommend using neutrino as it has a bunch of performance mods.
There's also acerbix CM9 FP builds but I don't think they're finished yet.
All the ROMS except CM9 and CM7 nightly have FP unlock working. I'm using it on CM7 weekly.
Ok I should have also said to add links, lol. I did notice an issue with the Alien that i did not think was an issue.... its slow to boot. The stock phone boots in i would say 30-45 seconds, Alien would boot 90-120. ....So that being said, I wish for a ROM to have a faster boot then the Alien.

CM7 or a ROM based off CM7 (e.g., Neutrino). Faster than stock.
Hey guys,
I grabbed myself an NC about a week ago. I've put in CM7.1 right after the first try of the stock firmware.
After going through the forum threads and reading all the (mostly) positive feedback of users trying out nightlies, I'm considering of putting one myself instead of the CM7.1 Stable.
Question is, though, whether I can except a user experience that will be at least equivalent with one of the current nightlies.
I know the question is an oxymoron itself, since nightlies cannot guarantee any "stability". However, as I have concluded from reading many threads here, they do have their virtues.
So, after clarifying that I'm aware of how absurd it is to expect a definite answer, I wondered if there is currently a nightly build that can offer me an at least equivalent (and preferably better) user experience than the current 7.1?
Thanks in advance.
That all depends on what you use your NC for or how you use it. If you just want to use it to read, watch Flash videos and/or other videos, play games and work on documents and stuff then I would say you've already got that with CM 7.1 stable.
However, if you want to get in the trenches with a CM9 nightly group and assist with discovering issues and/or bugs and having to flash new updates or fixes or "hacks" but not really get full use out of your NC that you have today until they get to a stable version then you could certainly go try one of them.
It just all depends on what kind of "user" you are of your NC.
Well, I need my NC in a usable state, since it's my primary (and only) tablet device.
By 'usable' I mean that I'd like a responsive UI, WIFI and browsing capabilities; games would be alright though I'm not a hardcore user (i.e. I don't o/c).
I would love to contribute with reporting bugs, as long as my NC could cover those basics.
Is it possible to boot the nightlies from a SD, while keeping my 7.1 on the emmc?
I've yet to try a CM 7.x nightly that left my device in an unusable state. I have had issues with the Android Market not working, spurious display of cell signal and other relatively minor annoyances. Most of those become apparent in the first hour or so, so if they're a problem, I can easily roll back in a few minutes.
I am a big fan of CM 7.2 RC0 Mirage.
The most stable is 7.1, if you want a everyday driver with no problems then 7.1 is what you want. Ics9 nightlys are in progress but are pretty stable as well, its better to flash the rom and see for yourself first hand...make sure you backup first. Also flash the gapps, I've been running ics for a couple weeks with no problems. Hope this helps

I would highly recommend at least the Mirage Kang CM7 builds. I have also jumped into the CM9 nightlies and haven't been disappointed. ICS is really slick and my NC is very usable. I can't say for sure about all apps/games, but the ones I use (mainly reading & web surfing) work great.
Like previous people said, backup your current rom, and try flashing either the latest Mirage CM7 build, or the latest CM9 nightly. I would almost recommend trying out CM9 since that's the future, and you can go back to CM7 if you come across a show-stopper.
Yeah, you can dual boot different roms, there are a few threads on that although I've never done it myself.
I just switched from CM7 n253 to the Mirage KANG builds and have enjoyed the experience and would recommend it. I would not recommend n253 as there were some bugs that really bothered me, but they're fixed in the KANG build and it seems to be reasonably stable. Most of what I do is reading / internet browsing / music streaming.
I really am greatful for all your patience about my very obscure demands
BTW, if I do get it on emmc (not dual-boot), can I use a backup app (for example: Titanium) to backup my 7.1 data and pass it to the nightlies, or will it be incompatible with those?
I believe you should be able to backup the app data. Going from 7.1 to the Mirage CM7 builds will be safe.
I actually did install CM9 over CM7 without any major issues. There were a couple apps that would force close but clearing their data or just removing/reinstalling seemed to fix that.
What method did you use when you installed CM7 to Mirage CM7?
Also, is there a method of doing that via Rom Manager?

Download mirages build put it on your sdcard, go into Rom Manager and select install from sdcard select mirage's zip and voila. You can update it by just wiping davlik cache, if you encounter any problems it might be wise to do a clean install, which you can do from Rom Manager too, selecting to wipe system and data. Remember to always backup your apps using titanium backup and/or backing your rom.
anyone using cm7.2 rc1 yet? i've been trying to download it, but it's really slow. Been pretty happy with the nightlies so far, and am looking forward ot cm7.2 stable (and cm9 stable of course)
any new bugs that i should be aware of before flashing? I'm not too android savvy, so any tips are appreciated.
thanks
I'm trying to get it too, many people have same issue. The CM servers are hot these days
As far as i know there might be some issue with ringtones when stored on sd card...?
You can check official 'bugzilla'
I did dig but didnt find anything to worry.
tried the official update but it was "meh"
almost same with the nightlies, minus some features from nightlies
I went back to euroskank nightly instead
i suggest using the newest nightlies, 'cause they have some bugs fixed, which RC1 don't. You should see the CM7.2 RC1 thread, there is a .torrent link which is running full speed, opposite to their sever
I'm downloading now will share my experience once I'm done!
I know it's like comparing apples to oranges, but how do you guys feel about the current development behind the ICS ROMs v. Sense (I've namely looked into The Classic 1.0 and DigitalKarma's Heaven "Sense4 meets Sense1" so far).
I haven't played around with Sense at all since rooting my phone back in September when I flashed CM7. Currently, I have jmztaylor's unofficial CM9 ICS ROM (5-10 stable build, I believe) on my phone and I'm liking it. However, I mainly hopped over to CM in order to get rid of the bloatware, thus increasing my battery life while at college (where I got awful service). Now that I've graduated, I'm home, working, and best off all, I have great service again.
That being said, I've been thinking about trying out a Sense based ROM again but can't decide if I should stick with ICS or not.
Thoughts? Opinions on any and all of the ROMs pertaining to ICS and Sense are appreciated.
I apologize. I only searched the General forum when seeing if this has been asked before, but I just found this on the Q&A forum.
Input is still more than welcome here, as my topic is a little more specified and I'd like to have reasoning behind the input too. But I'll continue reading that thread as well.
I personally love jmz's cm9 rom. Sense does offer 4g and Netflix and camcorder but it usually looks annoying and is pretty slow. Cm9 is smooth and fast with no annoying colors. I can't wait for a more stable version of sense 4 for the og evo.

i need help
ok my problem is that i flashed MazWoz b5 which is ics 4.0.3 now when i flash back to ginger bread nothing works right either wont get texting or google play wont load the last problem was that when i download an app to install as soon as it finishes and goes to install it reboots. i did it all i wiped everything but sd card i flashed the roms and if the dev had kernels with it i flashed them as well i then load up and still get errors i have no clue on what is happening.
i am using smelkusmod v4.1 recovery could this be the issue i have an ext 3 as well
Flashed Classic earlier to give it a shot. Sense just feels so incredibly foreign to me now so I decided to revert back to ICS at least for the weekend. After that, I may give Sense another go around.
This time with ICS, I'm giving MIUI a shot since I've been on CM (7 and then 9) since I originally rooted.
All feedback is still welcome, because eventually I'll probably end up trying more to see what feels the best for me.
both jmz's and mazda's cm9's have been stable for me...but seeing mazda's is based off of jmz's it makes sense. aokp has been stable at times with certain builds but i have to admit that i was never had the same results after reflashing at times

Partition your SD card
bump it to ext3
then to ext4 (for aosp and ics ONLY!)
wipe all except SDcard 3 times
then install
I recommend Mazdariders23 CM9 ROM: http://changelogs.tincandroid.com/CM9.html
(Btw mazwoz is now b6)
I also recommend this kernel: http://goo.im/devs/atyoung/Mason-RC/Mason-EI-0.1.5-RC5-sbc-supersonic-signed.zip (thats for cm9 only)
here is for all ICS ROMs: http://goo.im/devs/atyoung/Mason-RC/Mason-I-d15rc4-sbc-fso-supersonic-signed.zip
smelkusmod is now version 3: http://d-h.st/users/smelkus/?fld_id=1930#files
I had to unroot my phone last week to get a replacement I was on jmz cm9 before he left and came back. I didn't miss not being able to record video but now that I'm too lazy to reroot. I'm stuck on sense and I finally tried Netflix and been recording videos more. I still like ICS but I will stick to stock until my next phone.
