New Dell Streak User - Streak 5 General

Hi Guys,
Just got myself a Dell Streak from Rogers.
Now I own both an obsolete Dell Streak and HP TouchPad lol
Anyways, I'm about to attempt to install DSC v0.7 custom rom.
Who uses this? and is it good compared to GingerStreak?
Also any advice or tips for a new user?
Thanks!

Gingerstreak is just old and based on unofficial 405 release and not anymore developed, meanwhile DSC it's based on newest 407 official release and heavily developed and has a lot more stuff incorporated in it and way less buggy even compared to the official 407. I tried all gingers for the streak and found peace with DSC.

I use DSC 0.7. It is arguably the best custom Gingerbread ROM currently available. Rock solid stable with no "showstopper" bugs, it's also constantly updated. GingerStreak is no longer being maintained, to the best of my knowledge. As noted in this thread, the GingerStreak code is old code compared to DSC and has some pretty nasty bugs. I know Go Launcher EX doesn't like GingerStreak. Other apps may be just as finicky.
Don't bother with GingerStreak. Use DSC, but make sure you read the first post in the DSC thread carefully.

I installed DSC v0.7, and I noticed the WiFi tethering option is gone. But when i use a toggle it appears to work, but can't connect. Also using another app to turn on the tether, i can't seem to connect to it... anyone can shed some light on this?
Thanks a bunch for the peeps on the info above
EDIT:
I re-installed and the tether option appeared, but then I get a reboot and now the setting is gone??? wtf
EDIT2:
Fixed it, thanks to truefat's post, i deleted the rogers apn setting and works

Glad to see someone new here, ok here goes my tips, or should I rather say my setup that simply works.
ROM: DSC v0.7
launcher: Zeam
privacy app: PDroid and you will need PDroid DSC patch
anti-theft app: avast!
theme: DSC_MattedBlues V7
some notes:
works fine
currently under development
no deal breakers
is quite fast - can handle most power hungry games
MattedBlues theme breaks the SwiftKex X (phone) keyboard in landscape mode! not an issue if you don't use this keyboard

I just got mine tuesday night. So far loving it and excited to load a custom rom. Just having a hard time trying to get it rooted first.

yeah just read that. so used to old way i did it on my vibrant. going to attempt to download DCS this weekend....any tips outside of the guide>?

in the dsc thread, theres file for download, called a flashme pack
itll install the amss and dsp1 required for gingerbread, also installs the recovery , easy enough to do, put streak into fastboot mode run the command and connect phone to pc, does rest itself, then just install the rom via recovery mode
pretty easy to do once you get your head around it

Make sure you read and understand the warnings about using fastboot in the flashing guide and read Everything you wanted to know about the streak, but were too busy bricking it.
Fastboot and StreakMod Recovery are your main tools for modding the Streak.

Thanks for the advice. Running DSC very impressed so far. This phone is amazing.

You should get a replacement ASAP, before there aren't any left....
Or they'll send you a refurb one.

Welcome to the Streak family! lol...well you must be aware that most custom roms with 2.3 have some minor bugs that will probably bother your daily usage at times - random freeze/reboots...etc. Not saying that this happens often but quite rarely especially if you install an apk that cause instability.
Stock roms have also their issues, but they are by far the most reliable roms out there since they are very stable and suitable for daily usage.

O really.. I'm using DSC and its been great so far.. but I only got my streak on Tuesday, so I can't really say that its 100% stable.
But nonetheless, I am happy
Also upgraded the InnerSD to 8GB, modify the sd cache for faster reading speeds. (getting ~3x read speeds!!)

pssh, thats not so. If you install a custom rom you can always reflash back to stock (i havent read how to do so just yet on the streak, but im sure there is a way to backup the stock firmware).
Just to give you an example. My streak that came in last friday was dead on arrival. The touch screen was failing intermittently and from what ive read on the streak forums so far, a dead LCD in this phone is quite is a very possible situation. That replacement is 50+ bucks so might as well not do anything while you still have the 1 year warranty.
Software is mostly always fixable. Ive sent back two samsung infuses that i flashed the **** out of and then just reinstalled stock firmware and back they went. Both died within 2 months of receiving the phones. One screen burnt out, the other the GPS chip melted.

Well that's good of you to be cautious. Better be safe than sorry... As for me, I gave into temptation
Also in about a year, i'll be due for a free upgrade..
By then, i might not even use it.

I just got the eris on the 20th of july. I had heard that HTC was really good but I have started running in to problems.
I rooted and I am using evil eris rom 3.0. I noticed yesterday that the awake button started not working after further investigation I noticed I could tap on the side and it would wake up.
Also just noticed today that was getting pretty hot and using the battery significantly. only lasted 5 hours.
I am considering returning the phone as I have 30 days.
Anyone have any Ideas
Search through the forums for specific problems you are having, then trouble shoot. Have you reflashed the ROM? Tried any others? Did you do a nandroid backup, if so have you tried a restore? The phone could be complicated so if you don't want to put in the effort id recommend returning it.
Sent from my Eris using XDA App
Did you ask your question in the Evil Eris thread ? Maybe others running the same ROM are having similar issues.
yeah, I tried two other roms for a short time I liked this one the best. At first I didnt have any problems.
Are you suggesting i wipe this flash then reflash it again.
Also are you suggesting I restore the original.
Ive been searching just Havent found anything yet.
I really would like some input on if you guys think I should work through this with the phone. Are these phones reliable and such I dont mind tweaking it a little to get it right. But I dont want to have constant problems
HTC does make great phones. However, you shouldn't base your opinion of the phone off of hacking into it and modifying it (especially being a less-than-a-week-old first-time HTC owner who hasn't done a lot of footwork to troubleshoot the issues).
Yes you should wipe and reflash the rom and see if that does anything. If that doesnt help, do a restore (supposing you did a back up). Also a lot of these roms are over clocked so the phone can get hot from using it a lot especially if its on the charger.
Since you rooted your phone, you have void your warranty. Basically if verizon decides to check the software builds and whatnot and discovers you have rooted, you might not get another phone. There are threads on how to unroot your phone, so I suggest doing that before you return it if you decide to.
Also I might suggest sense able 3.1 very stable rom

Hey bud thanks for the positive feedback. Your help is greatly appreciated.
I do really like the phone. You know all that power in such a small package. Thats the reason for these forums I believe so that we can help eachother.
Ill try that and see what happens.
I really hated my eris until i started using froyo based roms.. They are a bit buggy especially the camera but well worth the effort even if just for battery life. I went from 15-20% lose an hour to 5-8% unless i use alot of data.. then its more like 10-12%.

Ordered my Blade/San Fransisco!

Hey,
Just ordered mine from Orange for £79.99 a bargain if you ask me!
Sorry to start yet another thread but I have a few questions!
Anyone unlocked this to 3?
Any major issues with it once rooted with CM7?
Does it have wifi hotspot option?
Can the CPU be clocked?
Anyone tried removing the Orange branding on the back?

Anyone unlocked this to 3? "Yes"
Any major issues with it once rooted with CM7? "Best bet is to flash and try i'm still using 2.2 as don't find CM7 stable enough for everday use"
Does it have wifi hotspot option? "Yes on 2.2 is available and using now over 3 network"
Can the CPU be clocked? "Yes and running @ 690Mhz some people can go higher"
Anyone tried removing the Orange branding on the back? "Get an android sticker form ebay search android sticker will see the one as says covers SF"
Have fun with new device for the price there very good handset
Personally I've found CM7 almost ready for everyday use, few niggly bugs but try it out. Also if you need unlock code and guides to rooting check www.orangesanfrancisco.co.uk

Yes I have unlocked and using my wife's on a 3 contract. just use the ZTE Black Unlock APK really really easy
Any major issues with it once rooted with CM7?
No issues at all works great I would not recommend installing apps to the SD that comes with the phone as it seems to slow everything up. (We were use S2E from the market), oh only issue is the wifi wake issue but intstall Blade WiFi fix from the market and you will have no issues
Does it have wifi hotspot option?
Yes CM7 has this by default
Can the CPU be clocked?
Yes don't expect miracles, we managed 710mhz max stable what ever you do don't set it to boot at the speed until you are sure its stable as you will have to reinstall from a backup if you do
Anyone tried removing the Orange branding on the back?
No, to be honest you kind of forget its there, it does feel slightly raised I wouldn't risk trying to get it off
This is the really nice guide I followed to root and unlock the phone really easy
www.chrislowthian.co.uk/how-to-unlock-de-brand-and-root-the-zte-blade-orange-san-francisco/1824/
Ok done all the above, no problems at all, my blade does feel somewhat laggy though, not much diff to Orange branded OS, I didn't expect the smoothness of my DHD though, not sure if pumping my CPU to 750mhz and locking up the OS might have affected it? Rebooted back to normal but it just feels like its dying a slow death, how smooth is everyone else's? Cheers.

Ruñning cm 7.0.0 stable release working great no problems
Sent from my Blade using XDA Premium App
I wouldn't go over 650MHz. Are you using Apps2Sd (EXT version) if so is your SD card a class 2 card? Mines smooth on CM7 with Live Wallpapers. Maybe it just feels slower since you're coming from a Desire HD?
Well One Problem With The "Stable" Release Is that it reboots when you charge it.
Also Make Sure You Have A GEN 1 phone or CM7 Will brick it unless you install the special rom addon
It won't brick it, just won't boot up. This is due to incorrect Lib files.
I am on CM 7.0 stable also. Everything works perfect, except when I charge it reboots 1 time and then is ok. For first 5 chargings or so it did not restart at all. Could be when I use GPS?
Today I decrease min frequency to 122 Mhz instead of 2xx. Should this extend my battery life?

No asian is getting GB update dude.
'em from India and when ask dell ppl they passout
Besides, unlocked Streaks direct from Dell would be the first to get such an update since ROMs for those units don't have to be modified by the carriers to add carrier bloatware before being released.
well... i am not here to defend it. It is a rumor after all... everybody belives in what they want to belive.
2.2.2 stable
Is gingerbread "really" needed?
Yeah, who wouldn't want the latest & greatest OS for our device, but, just for me, 2.2.2 (purchased direct from Dell, unlocked) is smooth as silk.
It came with 1.6, up'd to 2.1, then 2.2.2 and with the script tweak, it's smooth as silk. Does it get 10,000 on the benchmarks? Nope, not hardly, but I can run it for a week at a time, no lock ups, only the once in a while app FC, so I have to ask myself, does it do what it is suppose to do? YES. What benefits would I gain from updating to GB or HC? Probably not much other than some eye candy.
This gadget is my business device 75% of the time and I don't have time to constantly reboot, reinstall, wipe everything out.
I guess I'm among the minority.

Well, if it came from Dell, it will get the update first, which is my entire point. If it comes from a carrier, you have to wait.
You are not alone, p51d..... I bought a Nexus 1 back when they first came out..... After a couple of months, I got REALLY tired of not having pinch-to-zoom in the browser..... so I decided to root it and install a custom ROM that would give me that capability. Although technically the ROM install was successful, the phone's battery life immediately plummeted to about 3-hours (from a full charge). When the lcd started becoming cloudy (probably from overheating due to a half-baked ROM), I sent it back to Google for replacement. 2-weeks later it arrived freight COLLECT, along with a letter from Google saying because it had been modified, the warranty was void. That was a $600 lesson I learned the hard way.
When I read here where people want to change some minor feature and root their Streaks, then run into major problems and expect others to fix it, I just have to smile to myself. I mean is it really worth destroying your phone just to get a fraction of a millisecond faster processor speed?
I bought my Streak factory-unlocked from Dell, and because of my past experience, I would never root it, especially since it's my only phone/pocket-sized link to the outside world. When the warranty expires, I'll probably get something else. But my factory-installed Froyo OS is smooth as silk. It's not lightning fast, but I don't have an extra $550 that I can blow to make it faster LOL

So Streakowner, what you mean is how well the phone functions after it's been rooted (even "correctly" rooted), has NOTHING to do with the ROM installed on it? With all due respect, I beg to differ with you on that point.... please explain further

if you refer to rooting as only having the su and busybox installed then , you are wrong, but if you meant that installing custom ROMs is bad practice , I do agree totally with you, you never know what is inside the complied libwebcore.so for example, can just be anything there, even some nasty code you aren't aware but your bank will insist it was you who ordered that item from Ebay .
Sent from my Dell Streak using Tapatalk
I should have clarified that, streakOwner..... my bad ... You are correct...... Rooting alone did not destroy my Nexus...... the culprit, no doubt, was my choice of which ROM to install.... Nonetheless, it did void the warranty...... To borrow an overused phrase, "Other than that, Mrs, Lincoln, how was the play"? LOL
Sent from my Dell Streak using xda premium
To expand on what he said, the usual modules added from rooting are:
SU
Superuser.apk
Busybox
Sometimes bash.
By themselves they dont do anything, on a rooted system with no root able apps it's functionally the same as not being rooted.
It depends entirely on what apps are doing that requires root permissions to accomplish.
It's like buying a bad battery that will explode. If you dont ever charge it and put it in your phone nothing will happen, it's just a plastic brick until then.
Rooting would be the equivilent to removing the battery cover and installing it vs having it taped shut.
Good analogy, Manii..... Unfortunately, my need to have pinch-to-zoom on my Nexus basically ended up costing me the phone. Had I waited for an update, or installed a different ROM, I maybe could have avoided disaster......
Just from looking around here, it seems the vast majority of custom ROMs are slightly, if not overly, buggy (IMO..... I mean, look at the title of this thread). I had an old HD2 awhile back that I would flash different ROMs to, just for kicks.... but it wasn't my main phone. Prior to that, I unlocked our iPhones (relatively simple), so I thought installing a different ROM on the Nexus couldn't be all that difficult..... The root/ROM install was simple enough, but the real trick with Android is finding a custom ROM that actually works 100%. That's why I took issue with streakOwner's "if you know what you're doing" comment. I should've clarified the Nexus problem was totally ROM-related..... not a "pbk&c" issue (Problem Between Keyboard & Chair) LOL

New to the streak scene

Well I have had xda's, htc's, xperia's etc but not had the streak till now thought i would wait till they ironed out some bugs although mine has seemed to be slow and tonight had the first app forced to close. My question now is which rom do people recommend. for the htc desire i really liked lee driod, anything similar lol, Although i do like the dell staged widgets.
I am also new to the streak.
I tried Gingerstreak first, Gingerbread then Froyo.
Been using power rom for 2 days now and it's a very good rom.
Fast and stable.
Try them all, Stage can be installed on any anyway.
Dpi was too big and I didnt like the theme but those can be changed with ease.
hello. been a long time lurker in these forums and finally decided to take a plunge and become a poster in these forums.
installed gingerstreak 2.4.4 about two weeks ago without a hitch and it's working very well. i did however notice that I can't seem to be able to change the i/o scheduler settings for this rom. i've used different apps and scripts to do so. but it seems that the rom is "hard-wired" to the sio type of i/o scheduling and cannot be changed.
any suggestions will be wecomed. thanks.
seems like 2.4 would be a good one but just didn't want to jump into putting a custom rom on it when the original firmware works quite well, is there a solid way of getting a recoverable backup of the firmware that comes pre-installed, but am thinking of just plunging into putting a new rom on it tonight and seeing how it goes.

Most of the stock Tom's available from the wiki. It is easy to revert to a stock rom from any of the custom roms.
I got that kind of feeling its the first phone i have not just jumped into breaking, I have opted for coffebun and so far so good i kinda like how it boots with a duke nukem theme lol, also seems to clock pretty good will test the benchmark in a second though
benchmark provides the top spot so thats cool but have spotted a few apps force close which i was trying to avoid, but for how much quicker the phone is now it is over clocked it is spot on

Rebuilt my streak today. removed DSC7 and went back to Streakdroid244

Hey folks,
How many other folks had/have issues with DSC7 and wifi? I did not like the fact that i needed to use a third party app to work around the issue. But I have to say I really really really like DSC7 and hope the WIFI issue is resolved soon. I think the issue stems from the base ROM, but that is just a educated guess.
I have gone back to GingerStreak244. I did a factory wipe and then installed a factory ROM (353), followed by StreakDroid, then got a bunch of FCs for the phone crap, did another factory reset reinstalled StreakDroid again and all is well.
I am looking for a Weather WIDGET that is large enough for the Streak but I cannot find one; everything I see is too small; so if you know of one tell me.
Lastly, I have two Streaks and I have one for sale in the market, here is the link. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1470649&highlight=dell+streak
$190 and I will cover shipping in the United States.
I don't think the wifi issue is just with DSC or any other Rom. It seems to be independent of the rom.
Did you install the correct base bands for a Gingerbread Rom? If you installed 353 first, then you will have deleted them...
Sent from my Dell Streak using Tapatalk
Yeah, I did install the correct basebands.
I may give DSC a go again as it was installed over the last ROM and was not a clean install.

Nicest Widgets are beautiful widgets
Sorry to hear that. I had a lot of problems with DSC 7 as well. DSC 65 was perfect for me and baseband 406 was good.. I updated to 407 and DSC 7 and at first gave me a bunch of force restarts. It usually happens when I flash DSC rom and the wifi issue is ok with the Wifi reassociate app n0ps packed its quite tolerable. I have never tried gingerstreak as yet but have heard good things about it. I myself just did a full rebuild when I upped to 407 baseband.
Oh P.S try HD Widgets gives u a bunch of weather options.
I don't recommend GingerStreak for two reasons:
1: It's built using beta code and some hacked together drivers, making it less reliable than ROMs based on an official release.
2: It hasn't been updated in months. One of the two developers doesn't have a Streak any longer and the other is focusing more on the Streak 7.
You can use any ROM you wish, but I would stick with ROMs based on the 407 release.

YOu are correct about the age of the ROM, but really that is not an issue to me if what I need from the ROM is working. Yes, Steve is working with the 7 and Fards has a new phone but the work they have done and will continue to do is bettery than anything I can do and for that I am very thankful to both of them and the rest of the folks that have input. Who knows Steve may even come out with ICS for the streak. Only time will tell and I am not going to ask about it.
Now, it looks like the WIFI issues are being hammered out in DSC 71 and it is being tested, as of last night it is looking promising. So, it will probably not be too long before I give it a go again.
Lastly, I am getting really pissed off at the crap LCD on this phone, I have had the gorilla glass separate from the LCD like 5 times and this last time may be it for me.
I have never had good luck with StreakDroid, mostly because it was incompatible with Go Launcher EX. DSC never had that problem, and given the frequent updates to it, was a much better choice. The ROM people choose to use is of course a personal preference, but I honestly believe StreakDroid is not a good choice for a Gingerbread ROM for the reasons stated. In the case of DSC, the most recent update has apparently fixed what was my one minor glitch with it: the phone app not recognizing touches to the screen after engaging the proximity sensor. I've never had issues with WiFi on the ROM since I started using it, but I know others have had freezing issues.
On the subject of build quality, what in the heck do you guys DO with your Streaks to make them virtually fall apart like you describe? Knock on wood, but compared to the horror stories I've read about for the past nine months now my Streak must be built like a tank. The only issues I have ever had with the Streak were with the 16GB MicroSD not reading and the Dell logo coming off the back of the Streak. The first I solved using a pair of needle-nose pliers and the second was solved with a bit of superglue.

lol I agree, I've my streak just over a year, and as far as build quality goes, I'm impressed, I had a Touch pro and Touch pro 2 before this and both of them had a cracked screen within a year. this streak seems to be pretty much indestructible, the only issue I have is a slightly bent hook on the back cover, so it's a bit stiff getting the cover back on, but that doesn't bother me at all
in call volume sucked on the stock rom, but using Gingerstreak seems to have sorted that out, not had any complaints from people saying they can't hear me since upgrading the rom
Shame dell decided to ditch the device, I'd have liked to have seen a streak 2
I've had my Streak since pre-launch... so going on 2 years.
I've not had a spot of trouble with mine (knock on wood) with the singular exception of battery drain when the device arrived. A factory reset was sufficient to clear that up and since then has been happly chugging away daily.
I do keep mine in an Otterbox Defender (a commuter for a little while)
I'm now running CM7 and loving it. Best ROM I've ever used.
alperin: Do not use GingerStreak! It has frequent freezes!
I recommend you to use DSC ROM. It's perfectelly stable and quick! It's battery life is amazing too! You won't have any trouble with DSC!
any pointers

Any pointers... all the roms ive tried have been hit or miss or good for up to 48hrs then refuse to boot...i try to keep with compatible basebands right now i am swapping between the latest streak strains of miui, longhorn, and cm7... all have shined brightly ever so briefly on my unit then taken turns for the worse usually after app updates or installs (fc's/crashes/etc)
Any pointers for getting to a stable place on any of these phenominal roms would be appreciated...()
Gingerstreak2.4.4 with GX Kernel 1.0 works well for me. I think it's been on my Streak for 6 or 7 months now (possibly more) with no issues to speak of apart from occasional battery meter randomness
My current baseband is 405. I MAY change it to 406 but I've only got it as a main device for 3 more months or so. Stable ROM so why change stuff eh!
Mine is on for weeks at a time without cause for rebooting, unless I install a a load of stuff - I tend to clear dalvik cache then - or want to recalibrate the battery.
Thank You Note

If everything is running good for you then the ROM is the one to use. If you like to mess around try other ROMs. DJ Steve's ROMs have been good for me!
problems with wifi
I've started using dsc and had problems with wifi freezing, for some reason 2.4.4 worked great for my phone. Anytime I need to use 3g I have too reboot my phone, then to get back to wifi I have to reboot again
I'm newbie here... In DSC since 0.6 ! very stable rom indeed ! Made my streak as "real phone" with working USSD gingerbread rom. And the most important thing is continuous support from developer and dsc team !
