Hi Guys
been out of the scene for some time. ive been a member since the palm treo era. been so busy at work and was sunk into the iphone world. and im tired of the cat and mouse chase regarding the unlock and jailbreak scene. recently, i just fell in love with the SGS2. just ordered the white unlocked version from a UK source. been doin some reading recently bout rooting and mods.
i believe it comes with ginger bread rom and looking around youtube, it seems to be a nice rom. but maybe in the future i would eventually root it and install a custom rom. ( any suggestions?...) any one running the ICS?
oh well im just excited im getting a bad ass phone!

Welcome back
Don't think you have to wait long for an official Samsung ICS, but if you can't wait take a look at this:
http://www.youmobile.org/blogs/entry/New-Android-4-0-3-ROM-leak-by-Samsung-for-Galaxy-S-II-I9100XXLP2-Download-Screenshots-Video-
Welcome on "our side". ;-)
As for the roms, well, here is a quick-start-guide:
1. Full TouchWiz-based ROM's like lightning and checkrom.
2. TouchWiz-based ROM's with less preinstalled apps like gingermod.
3. CyanogenMod 7 for gingerbread and 9 for ice cream sandwich
4. MIUI for a totally redefined UI.
I had them all and liked them all. There were just some that I liked more than others, and before I give you a biased tip, I'd say that you should try all out by yourself.
Installing custom-roms is a piece of cake on that device.
Have fun!

Welcome,
You'll love the phone it's a nice bit of kit.
User above has explained the rom side ill explain the kernel side,
Most basic stock, intratechs thread all stock roms and kernel odexed versions.
Looking to root or maintain a stock kernel with root, busybox etc CF Root by Chainfire.
Looking for a stock like kernel, with tweaks and good performance and battery checkout SpeedMod or Phenomenal which is based on Speedmod.
If you like tinkering with kernels then Phoenix, NEAK and SiyahKernel all very popular and can adjust them in many ways for your liking.
Most of all enjoy, you'll soon start flashing and testing out various things.

thanks guys! just found out that my phone was dispatched already by DHL hopefully ill get it in 3days from UK to US.
just also ordered a DL jig on ebay just incase i need it to restore to factory for warranty purposes.
thanks sniper for that list. would definitely try it and see what suits my taste.
nice one nikz - as far as these kernels, are they all compatible with the roms that sniper listed?
thanks again!
It depends on the kernel.
I doubt any of them is compatible to CyanogenMod 9.
The Siyah-kernel is compare to all other tho.

Only official kernels work with any ics rom. No custom kernels until kernel source is released by Sammy.
As for rom/kernel combos, I got the best battery out of cm7+siyah kernel after undervolting and stuff. Cm9 is just too good to pass up. Still getting a full day, but not 20ish hours heavy use like I did with cm7.
As far as I know all gb kernels work for all gb roms, but I would check each one. The difference is Samsung based or cm7 based(miui)

I think everyone is waiting for MIUI and CM7. Can't seem to get here soon enough lol we seem to have some Devs looking into making the current MIUI version we have more "useable" hopefully they can get us a descent release where the basic features are stable enough to be use as a 'daily driver' if not, GB will be here shortly in a couple weeks n we'll get things rolling

Really? For me battery was great, but bad 3G and no 4G killed it for me. If I would have at least had ok 3G, I would keep it, but otherwise when I leave my house, I have no internet, which is not the case on stock (or close) Roms.
The MIUI we have has great features and all, but let's face it, it's not the most attractive looking rom.
I can't wait until we have the newest MIUI, I've used it on my old Evo and trust me it blows away the one we have now. You guys are going to be so happy once we have it.
I'd use it as my daily and never change it EVER if we had it.
Unless the sense port was finished, in that case I would use that. But otherwise new MIUI is great.

It's not until you use theme manager to download themes. You can customize boot animation, wallpaper, icons, ringtones, with one click. Also, if you don't like those, you can get newer ones online at miuithemes.com, but those may not use all their features on froyo.
I'm really feeling the excitement build in the Epic community and I think its great. Things have been much more positive around here lately as well. I can't wait to try out miui and cm7 after GB source comes out, and hopefully be able to help out finding bugs and testing.
A couple months ago I was ready to ditch this phone for just about anything (even considered downgrading to an EVO) but now I think I'll be happily running the Epic for a good while to come.
For anyone who is fed up waiting for the latest and greatest, try running SFR 1.2 (froyo) with clean kernel. I am very nit picky about my daily driver and this has been flawless. Performance is much better than stock, and everything works so well I just don't feel rushed to upgrade (phone or OS) like I used to.
Right now I'm using marcusants ACS Bamboozle, but will definitely switch when (maybe if) we get GB Miui.
I have also seen an improvement in our community. The useless flaming and bickering has been toned down to a minimum, if not, just completely stopped. Its great to finally be one big happy community like before. I can say SRF 1.2 is def my favaorite ROM and daily driver at the moment, but I'm definetly looking towards CM7 and MIUI. It'll still be a while to get some stable builds done even after source is released so I hope SRF 1.3 is dropped a bit before then so I can totally leave froyo with a bang! and according to qbking77 in the SRF 1.2 development thread, SRF 1.3 is still being worked on, as well as a possible new kernel thanks to their hard work, it'll be a lot easier to wait a bit longer for MIUI/CM7 lol

MIUI just looks like a Chinese iOS knockoff. :\
Since I'm also probably going to be waiting for the next Nexus (if I can resist the SGSII) I'm also looking forward to CM7 and MIUI. I've never used either before or any iteration, but the reports on them are always great.
I'm gonna go to CM7 and set everything up, make a Nandroid Backup, then go to MIUI and set everything up with a Nandroid Backup after, because those are gonna be the only 2 ROMs I'll use.
Do any of you know how to build a kernel? I've made files to test, but don't know how to compile. I combined some files from GS CM Kernel and Epic stock kernel. Just need to know how to make a zimage. I can post the files if you want to compile.

You might want to PM thomasskull666 or Rodderik for that. They're the "kernel gurus". Just make sure u know what your doing and dnt hard brick ur phone. I wish I could help more but so far I'm looking for an extra computer to load a linux only OS since I hate to dual boot. Also, I haven't read too much into compiling yet so no help there either :\ sorry

There are lots of roms, and neither are the best. I beleive roms are NEVER stable. They always need to be modified, they always need to meet standards. No best ROM.. Period. But if I were to choose, MIUI would be the best LOOKING but not the best that's working.
its free on amazon..
I always try any rom thats put up because i like new things but im have been sticking with stuff from ERA on EC05 for stability

So far I have used SRF, Reborn, ACS Bambozzled, ERA Viper, and I am currently using Simply AOSP. I have loved each Rom I have used, each have their quirks. Usually the GB runs give me a few headaches... like restoring with titanium screws up my app space, GPS is up and down, etc. I would recommend using an EC05 Rom until things are fully stable with GB (especially CM7 Selfkang), just to save yourself a few headaches.

I've only used a few. Stock, Viper (apocalypse, frozen, and synergy), and urban legend (fury and regen). I'm currently using Urban Regen 1.1.1, with Rodericks genocide 2.0 kernel. Lately, I try to stick with EC05 based ROMs and kernels for their stability and the number of options out there for EC05. I'm relatively new to rooting and flashing so i don't know everything there is to know about it, but I'm learning fast. I'm definitely not new to tech, holding a few IT certifications, a degree in CNT and presently in school working on another degree, so my knowledge of operating systems (especialy linux ) is helping me learn much faster. The best advice i can give you, is to read the forums, ask questions when you can't find an answer (no matter how stupid you think the question is) and to try a little of everything until you find what you like or learn how to do it yourself, lol. There are tons of guides, wikis, and awesome developers who are willing to help you as long as you try your best to help yourself as well. You'll get the occasional put down, or get called a noob, you'll make mistakes and feel dumb, but everyone does so don't worry about it. Just try to remember that pretty much any question you can think of, any problem you run into, and disaster you cause, has probably happened to someone else before and has probably been addressed more than twice on these forums, so do some searching before you just start posting "HELLLLLLP MEEEEEEE!!!" Another piece of advice i can give you, that i did with my first phone, is get a decent size and class sd, read a guide on how to dual boot ROMs (i think theres even an app now that does most of it for you!), root your phone, leave the stock ROM on your phone, flash a good kernel that supports dual booting (check out genocide 2.0). That way, you can try out new ROMs as much as you like and always be able to revert back to stock when you need some stability or if you run into bugs.
Good Luck!

I've been rocking SRF 1.2 for about 3 months now with the Twilight Zone 1.1.1 Kernel. Very stable, no force closes or reboots, GPS locks instantly, over a full day of battery life. I'd stick with EC05 ROMs until the official GB ROMs drop. I've tried a few of the leaked GB roms and none of them have been stable enough to be daily drivers.

Which scripts you running? Just curious, been thinking of flashing back to SRF.
I've been rollin' with IAP Rebirth the past several weeks. Awesome ROM, but I've been getting reboots. Haven't even touched the Supercharger scripts and it's the most responsive ROM I've used.
I've had my N1 for 2 years now and it's time to move on.
I rooted and plagued it with custom roms, however, since my wife is not tech savvy and want to install a stable, easy rom to use.
Should I revert back to total stock or CM7.1 stable?
Suggestions?
There are quite a few rock stable ROMs out now, its going to be a matter of what you think she'll enjoy.
Stock ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1312540 )
SuperOSR ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1195656 )

OMN1GB ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1336059 )
Hope that helps man

I second MIUI as the ROM of choice for Nexus. This is the most functional ROM for Nexus as it comes, without sacrificing speed. Stock lacks way too many useful things, starting with a decent dialer.
CM7
For me CM7 would be the best choice, then stock!
Let me make it easy on you...
Put it back to stock.
Then when she messes it up or something doesn't work she can't blame your modding.

He does have a point. If you don't know what you are doing then you could easily turn your new phone into a paperweight. I would recommend you read. Read A LOT about ROMS and kernals and everything else that goes into the custom modding of your phone before you try anything. That's how i started and flashing new stuff is a walk in the park at this point.
Yeah I would stay away from flashing etc. Me being a total newbie on android and on note I'm waiting till official ice cream sandwich release and maybe start to play around with all the advanced goodies. If it's media, check out power amp for music, moboplayer for video, maildroid for email.
For basic customisation, and check out Dr ks thread for rooting and Chainfire kernal installation which will prove good for any customisation. Think it's in the stickies. Ics is awesome, but not without its problems especially installing so best check out the precursors.

If you would like stock gingerbread, flash lc1 or lc2. Im using lc2 its a very smooth fast rom with at lease one and a half days battery with normal use. But like everyone said read alot until u understand how to flash. Read how to flash lc1 or lc2 because newer roms u need to be already rooted before u can flash them and keep root.

Hi all,
I am the developer of SentinelROM, which is one of the most popular ROMs for Nexus 10, Nexus 7, Nexus 4 and HTC One X.
SentinelROM is compiled by me with modified CyanogenMod 10.1 code (additional tweaks for performance and battery life, as well as some theming). So far the ROM has been very successful.
I've decided to release the ROM for Samsung Galaxy SIII (i9300) also, but I need your help as I don't own a SGSIII to test with.
I am reaching out to anyone who would be willing to flash my test ROM and test a few things for me.
If you're interested, please PM me either here, or via the SentinelROM facebook page. I will reply with a download link and instructions.
I only need a few people for testing, so please don't be offended if I don't get back to you with a download link.
This ROM is for i9300 only at this stage, so please do not reply if you own an i9305 as the ROM will not work on your device.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Well everything is working as normal. I played about with the rom it is pretty stable. Everything works, and when i fell asleep unlike cm the battery never drained maybe about 3 percent drain overnight which is great. So the battery life on this rom is excellent. You're good to go with your rom. Sorry for the late reply i installed this around midnight. Used the rom and till about 2am and fell asleep. I am still using it. I must say overall it is a great rom. Thank you very much. I've not yet found a fault but maybe i might find one but that would be cm related.
For a beta rom this is really stable. Onlything maybe it isn't a big problem now but in the ota updater lol it doesn't recognize the device as MO.
Beautiful!!!

sentinel rom v 4.5 for gt-i9300
Hello, Sentinel.
First of all I'd like to thank you for this truly amazing rom, there's so many things I can do with my phone and change almost everything I want to within it. I only found 1 issue which may not be an issue at all, I might still be a bit inexperienced with all this modding stuff, but I haven't found a way to overclock or undervolt my phone using your kernel, but I took a risk of using siyah kernel 1.9.1 which is said not to be compatible with 4.2.2 JB and basically all new roms that are out now, but the funny thing is IT DOES WORK! And I think that siyah 1.9.1 kernel and your custom sentinel rom is the best combo ever for my galaxy s3. The battery works great even when I overclock it, it's really stable and never glitching. I can say I'm a heavy consumer, wifi constantly on, and I'm playing psone games with and emulator alot and it still does a pretty decent job. On my next payday I'm definitely donating, buddy. And in a months time when s3 stock 4.2.2 JB will come out, I'd like to see what you can do with that one aswell.
Keep up the great work, best regards, Lietus.

Hi Lietus. I assume you posted this here because you can't post in the ROM thread, so I'll answer you here
My official position on over/underclocking and UV/OV is discussed on my website. Have a browse.
Sorry but it's not something I support in my ROMs. People are alwsys welcome to use other Kernels to unlock these features if they want them.
Looking forward to payday
Hey, this is my first post, you did a really good job with this rom!
Is there any way to disable the fullscreen keyboard feature?
I understand where you're coming from and I totally agree with you if we users want we can make it ourselves using different kernels especially when your ROM is that great and it accepts different types of kernels. And I've got 5 different types of android machines which could use some improvement so if you're interested and have the time to expand your ROMs through those it would be just awesome. Because your ROM is actually the first custom one I've tried, and after a lot of research I can't seem to trust myself with someone else's
