I have a Nexus S i9023 with stock 2.3.6, unroot and everything, basically i didn't do a thing. Now, I want to update to 4.0.3, but since the ota doesn't show up i want to do it manually: i've searched the post but i can't find an how-to

oh come on, a few minutes of searching would have enlightened you.
if you downloaded the update: rename file to update.zip, put in root of your device, boot into recovery mode and install through it.
Danke, i tried to search "FLASH ZIP" but there were sooooo many topics unrelated (like flashing custom roms ecc)

because OTA has a script that reinstalls stock recovery every boot.
The black screen is because the ics recovery for 9023 does not turn backlight on, a bright light should show it up.
To stop the recovery reinstall you need to rename /ect/recovery-from-boot.p and /system/install-recovery.sh

rename in something like file.old.p or something specific?

You need root and a root file explorer, just rename those files then flash custom recovery and it will stick

I installed the new 2.1 Sprint leak using the RUU .exe file, but my apps are not showing up in the Market. Is there a way to go back to Damageless 2.1?

Thats because the RUU has NONE of the fixes that damageless had put in to make things work like they should. Try flashing it.
You need a custom recovery again first, and maybe busybox and some other stuff...

What do you mean try flashing it? I went back into my SD card to try to get Damageless 2.1 again, but it says the update.exe is not verified..

Download the .zip from his thread, then boot to recovery and flash it, wiping first.

it should be an update.zip
not exe
just download his newest ROM. name it update.zip
put it on your sdcard (root location)
boot into recovery (by holding down the home and power button at the same time)
wipe/factory reset
then flash (apply: update.zip)
I TAKE NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR ANY DAMAGE YOU DO WITH THIS!
This file is the official ROM from the latest 2.1 RUU. The only thing I did to it was process it in the Android Kitchen to remove the HBOOT update and Recovery update. This is for anyone looking for a clean official ROM that they want to add stuff to. Nothing is modified. I installed it on my phone and everything is working fine. Root is not even installed. If you want overclocking and root use the other attached files. Flash the files you want.
Install using rooted recovery.
OTA notifications are NOT disabled so ignore them in the future.
Remember to wipe user data before exiting recovery.
ROM will not wipe user data on its own.
DON'T flash downloaded ZIP! Extract the archive and then flash whats inside.
Enjoy!

For Clarification:
I sort of went one step further then PlaneJane and this IS a stock ROM. The only thing different between this and the VZW RUU is that its safe to flash without overwriting recovery or your bootloader. The user does the customization.
UPDATE:
If you want the new OTA release in July 2010 download http://www.multiupload.com/NUFVZNVDGD by n8thegr8 and install in recovery. If your using all the files I gave flash the update in this order.
Boot into rooted recovery.
Flash update.zip.
Flash root ZIP.
Flash overclocking kernel.
After that reboot and recovery will flash new radio.
WAIT until its completely done!
Phone will reboot again and your done!
After last reboot it takes some time at the Verizon screen to apply the update.
very cool man thx
so this is a variation of plain jane correct?

Sort of. I didn't even see what PlaneJane was all about other than its basically stock. I sort of went one step further and this IS a stock ROM. The only thing different between this and the VZW RUU is that its safe to flash without overwriting recovery or your bootloader. The user does the customization. Root is not even installed on the ROM. I included the ZIP for root and overclocking if you want it.
Hope that clears things up.

Not sure where the .zip is to flash the entire system..in fact, I don't think that was officially released yet. If you managed to get Clockworkdmod installed, I know there is a system image you can flash in the Dev section here.
Or If I have a nandroid back up how can I get that on m y phone to run that? I have it on the SD part of my card but doest show in the back up and restore file

could u point me to the tut on how to install the rom?
does it still alow internet access?
are u able to get aps like googlemusic and netflix?
Hi, you must be root, and clockmod recovery must be install, i advice version 6.0.1.
Make a backup of corrent rom, just in case
Copy froyofusion zip file to sdcard, power off, click menu+call(green button)+power on, after reboot in recovery, choose install zip file, again a few minutes and then reboot.
froyo as internet acess, and you can acess the google market, never try to install the programs you said but i have install a lot others with no problem.

then i went back to 2.2 and installed the default partition zip but the phone messed up, always got stuck at the huawei logo.
now, when i try to install a stock rom, it says update failed at the end of the installing process.

Try this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1971266. It helped me when I messed partitions on my phone. But don't forget that you'll have someone's else IMEI so you will need to change it using some of this forum's methods.
