IKEA Lamp controlled from an Android phone - Hardware Hacking General

This post is about a simple idea: take a cheap 3 colours Ikea night lamp, hack it by replacing its original MCU and adding a cheap serial bluetooth device and then write a simple Android app to control the lamp remotely from your phone !
This is just the beginning, imagine the possibilities once the phone has direct control over the colours and their respective intensities. You can make it light up in sync with some music, you can make it change colours depending on some e-mails you receive or your Facebook status, etc. ...
You can find more details as well as the code, on the original blog post (I know I'm not allowed yet to post external links, but it's definitely not spam and I can't really just copy and past all the stuff and code examples from that blog here...):

ok so I normally don't comment on posts without a reason to often, i just feel it clutters up xda to much BUT I have to say this is 100% pure genius not to mention very original. I love the idea and I'm saving this page to my favs to keep up to date on its progress.

Thx

This is awesome. Definitely giving this a try on payday.

That's cool

do you have a video demo?

Do u have any results? It's interesting!

This was on Hackaday.com last month right?

Awesome idea, makes a nice little project. Thanks for the post.

could you use the same concept to trigger a relay on a power outlet, to do some home automation/bluetooth control?

cool!! Thx

You need what?! a Photoshop-Like Software?!?! Then you're on the wrong board *lol*
Yes, please explain... You need PS? or just some of it's features?
A more descriptive subject line helps too.
You subject "i need" is too short and does not tell viewers anything....and does not show very well in the forum list. If someone did have an answer for your question, they might not look at your post because of that.
My 2 cents. If you are looking for free photo editing software, I use Paint.net. Do a Google.
Good luck!

[APPTest] DarkRuler BETA : Measure Tool

DarkAngelFR picked up this project and has a working app up and running... check out his blog @ http://blog.idlezone.org/pages/HTC/DarkRuler
original thread (how it started)
....A couple days ago i stumbled accross an App for the iPhone called RulerPhone and i thought it would be a cool tool to have for the diamond. Since our diamonds screen isnt multitouch, the tool would have to do without it and the lost ease of navigation could be accomplished using additional onscreen buttons.
Here is a basic explanation of the tool. Lets say u need to measure the with of your bookcase but u dont have anything to measure it. well you could guess how wide it is, OR you take out your Diamond, place a creditcard in the case and take a picture of the bookcase from within DiamondRuler. Once the picture is taken, you align the creaditcard from the picture with the placeholder on your screen using the touchdisplay, the zoom buttons on the display and the NavWheel. Once u have it all aligned you lock the picture and now you can start measuring your bookcase. the diamond will calculate the distances for you.
Is there a developer out there willing to take on the task? Let me know via PM.
Here are some Mockups of the GUI.
reserved for later use (maybe)
awesome idea
wow what a program!it is evolutionary!!
Flattering
If anybody would like to contact me about RulerPhone (I'm the developer) or inquire about development hints, please feel free to do so via the email address at http://benkamens.com/rulerphone. I am more than willing to share.
If the final design is going to be so blatantly RulerPhone-esque (to put it nicely...), I would appreciate a simple reference and link back to RulerPhone as the originating idea for what may be DiamondRuler.
Awesome idea!
I hate all these amazing iphone applications, getting very jealous of the iphone...
Must remember iphone GPS is rubbish....Iphone cant run all my favourite WM applications....
i remeber there was a ruler application for the N95..it could measure the distance between you and the object, height, angle...
certainly an interesting application to have
Nice whiskey collection! Nice idea for an app
Great idea !!
Should be really funny
@kamens : do you encounter special problems for developing this (I mean hard picture analysis coding...) ? I may develop this kind of funny tool for "windows mobile" but afraid of getting in hard "card finding algorithme".....
See Ya
DarkAngel
PS: excuse my english
no programmer up for the task?
i would code it myself, but by programmingskills just suck

Hello!
Beta Release is available, if you wants to test contact me by private message.
Will post the app in about a week if not many bugs found!
Thanx to testers and to fluid888 for the idea, to Kamens for its iPhone apps (thanx to a friend here for showing this to me "live", really impressive), to anyone in the beta, to the GSensor SDK Creator, .....
Ok I can see some potential for this if it can be calibrated to any accuracy. But how would parallax errors be dealt with and also spherical aberration could cause problems.
Interesting "bookcase" you have there fluid888, I think I might have read one or two of them myself!
lol
Sorry but I didn't implement any kind of spherical aberration algorythm yet lol... interesting but not really something easy to do!
Maybe in release 12.3.4.5 I will try to implement this let's make the v 0.1 working before

Screensavers for android phones?

There was only one previous question about this issue, but no replies!
I was thinking of something like the HTC deskclock but working as a typical screensaver, i.e. it runs when the screen is off.
Any suggestion?
Astro
I dont think many people would use this.. As it is, most smartphone users are looking to increase their battery life, and the single biggest battery drain is having the screen on. Ontop of that, Live Wallpapers, and in extension screensavers, tend to use battery power like mad since they are constantly re-drawing the graphics. Docks (like cradle and car docks) are only useful cause they are general plugged in when in use.
The only way I could see them being semi-useful, is if you set your backlight brightness to very dim which would save you most of the screen on power loss, but you'd still suffer from the constant redraw and processing power.
A screensaver is (and that is not my opinion but a fact) probably the most useless peace of software that can be running on a smartphone (for arguments see the previous post )
Thanks for the replies.
However, a low consumption dim clock would make a great addition to android phones and would be a useful tool for the ones using their phones as watches as I do. I never meant to ask for a flashy screensaver such as the ones you find on computers.

That's still going to use up your screen and CPU. As previous posters suggested, it is not recommended, unless you want your juice to run out before you even manage to come from work. However maybe 'Digital Clock' does something similar that you need?
I believe it IS possible! All you need is to set the screen refresh rate to 1/60 a second, make it go to minimal brightness, make the text cover as small area as possible, make it grey, dark grey, and add the refresh cycle to the cycle where it checks for some regularities, like cell signal.

You can't do that. At least not without modifying the kernel...
And what is blocking you from doing that?

[rom-dev]Colors Display Improvement (ReSaturated Method)[Test])

Hello everyone!
As we all know we have only 262k display colors .and this so sad.....But i think i found the way just a little improve our hd2.How? Ok just look at this two pictures:
The first one is original:
And this one is resaturated:
Of course on a PC it look wrong , but see it on hd2!!! It looks great (just tranfer the both pictures on your hd2 and compare)!!
Here are two more examples
And I thought - why this method does not apply to the rom?
And i did it. Of course to make such arms just commit suicide, because in rom about 15000 graphics files. Therefore specifically for such purposes, I wrote a program to automatically adjust images in the rom. Of course not all so rosy as it seems at first glance - some parts of the interface (how it happened for me) do not look as they should and there is a logical explanation - they have to edit manually, although they are quite suitable for automated processing of their "parameter". Some do not treat - the system becomes not working.I almost understood what exactly, but to understand the nature of such "intolerance" I have not yet succeeded.
The program still raw and needs refinement, but see the result of a fully automatic processing of the firmware you can now. As a basis took imilka inc s 1.1. Firmware works the same way as the original. There are weaknesses in some elements of the interface - as I already wrote such places must change hands.
This rom not for daily use. It`s just to see "how it looks".
If you interesting you download it, you flash it and give me your opinion to this topic.

Next patch changes

DISCLAIMER: Please don't ask for ROM, dump, files, where I got the ROM etc etc etc. Can't say anything and will ignore any requests.
Next patch version for the Z is still 4.1.2 but has some optimizations, let me name a few:
- Soft keys + notification bar background changed, it is now black and looks a lot better.
- There is an option to adjust the white balance of the screen
- There is an options to enable/disable the notification light
- Stamina seems to work much better, better standby time plus LED notification works with stamina on. Also noticed that apps in stamina exception list work much better now.
- WiFi reception is MUCH better.
- Camera opens faster than before, still a bit slow for my taste but it is a step to the right direction.
- The device is faster in general. Have tested this with another not updated device and it is in the scale of ms but still it is faster and more responsive.
I might be missing a few things here but it is a nice patch, I know it is not 4.2 but still it is a good patch.
Accepting questions to test things but I can't always answer very fast.
EDIT: forgot to write that the exploit for root doesn't work anymore.
Cool thank you Hopefully it won't be long until this is out!
Have they improved the camera quality at all do you know?

Improved The Photo quality?
This is most likely real! Haven't heard all of the listed improvements but we received internal confirmation on most of them.
Does this one already include the proper Music Unlimited integration in Walkman or is that planned for another release? I know it's coming but never had any confirmation on whether that would be in 4.1 or 4.2.

How about I post an article saying that Sony Z will be the first phone to get KLP and then put a disclaimer similar to yours and expect people to believe me, long story short we will only know how right/wrong you are when it comes out which will be about the same time we find out all the new features so again what was the point
