[Q] Is wireless push/sync possible? - Nook Touch General

I have a BNRV300 (nook simple touch) ... is there any way to 'push' epub files to it over wifi?
Thanks!

Yes but all methods require that you root your NST.
And if you choose to root your device, be sure to make a backup FIRST!
And make sure your backup file is ~1.82GB .. if less then you did it wrong!
I cannot emphasize this enough, every week we see one or more totally bricked Nooks because people either failed to make a backup, or did it wrong, and when you total it, well, it cannot be fixed unless you return it to B&N, simple as that!

OK, thanks; I figured I'd have to root it.
Does rooting remove the B&N reader software?
Would I then have to install a 3rd party ereader?
Does it basically become an AOSP android device?

Leaves all of it there. Though if you wanted to, you could install another reader app.

I tried using ADB over wifi to push epubs and while they copy fine and appear in the Library app, the reader app can't access them. I asume because the file ownership is wrong? Aldiko opens them fine.
Any way to fix this?

Check this thread once you have rooted your nook.

You can use Calibre to wirelessly sync your books to your nook.
Need to have Calibre on your computer and on your Nook.

I use dropbox with dropsync. You csn have it check for changes and sync or manuakly sync. It works great!

Thanks for the suggestions, I tried Renate's adbsync tool but still have the same issue with the Nook's stock reader not being able to read the file. Wondering now if it's down to the particular root tool I used - loney's "UK 1.2.0 Glow ONLY TFU Software Upgrade"
I imagine Calibre would work fine but I'm happy with the stock reader for now and don't need to sync a lot of files - doing them manually with adb push isn't an issue.

What firmware version was on your nook before you rooted?
loney's rooting tool is for UK Nook's with fw 1.2
if you have a US Nook glow or non-glow with fw 1.2 then root with Tinynoot.

It's a UK nook that came with fw 1.2. Have now realised that after a reboot the stock Reader can access the files, will carry on investigating.

[Q] Android on Nook touch without root

Hi All, Is there any way to run a full android system without root the Nook? I mean is there a way to install the rooted android for nook on a SD card and run from android from there without root the nook? like the nook color dual boot.
Thanks
Best regards
Muadiv.
To add to this question, is there any way to install a 'better than native' pdf application and run it by default for pdf files without altering anything else?
I am quite content with the device, but i do wish it had more robust pdf support.
Sent from my SCH-I800 using XDA App
Android systems requires applications to be installed before they can be run. Some Android devices such as cell-phones allow users to add a limited range of applications. However the Nook does not provide for user application installation, so to do get around this limitation requires 'rooting' the device.

I'd say just root it. The nook's normal features remain, so you should be fine...
someone tried booting cyanogenmod7 off sd but it didn't work and needs more drivers. i think it's possible to dual boot but nobodies done it yet

Yes, the NST "root" is nothing but a simple change to a config file and can easily be reversed.

NST boots from mSD card first if a proper image is available there, which means you can do about anything you want. To put it another way, you can remove all the partitions on the internal storage of the NST and still it will run happily from a image on the mSD card.
CM7 is a beast, seen from the NST perspective, and yes it needs drivers (source is available) in order to work, but as I've said before, I cannot see what to gain from porting CM7 to NST.

Just Another Brick in the Nook

I hope this is fixable. I'm running ManualNooter 4-6-16 and have been for months, no problem. Then all of a sudden, today it stops working. It just won't boot. I was using it, and it was working great. I came back later it was locked up, wouldn't come out of standby. I held down power and N to turn it off, which was all i was able to do, now it wont boot at all. It gets to the nook color screen then locks up. So I do a total wipe and re install ManualNooter. Now it does get to the Nook Color screen but it's the B&N one not the pretty MN one. And it locks up on the setup program at "Enabling Wifi". Trying a Nandroid Restore now but I don't know if that has any chance of working. It's going veeerrrrrry slowly. Any ideas?
You could try flashing something to an SD card, booting that, and seeing what the problem is from that. Or try flashing a whole new rom.

I don't want a new ROM tho, I'd go back to stock before I'd use CM or MIUI. I need the stock reader. Which brings up another question. How do I revert to stock?
Did you update flash or Su before this happened?

No, I did a Nandroid Restore and it booted... twice. Now it's doing the same thing again. Not finishing a boot. I have books that I've bought on B&N so I can't run CM or MIUI cuz I need to read them.
Just a side note, you don't need BN stock to read BN books. You can either use the nook app or an app called Aldiko Reader - both are free in the android market place. I'm not a fan of the nook app - basically use it to download my bn books to my sd card. I got the pro version of Aldiko and format it perfectly. Only difference from stock is I have to tap the screen to get the page number I'm on. When you pull your books into Aldiko from bn, it will ask for your login and password. The login is the name on your cc and password is cc number you used to purchase. You only have to do that once, and then rest of bn books come in.
Hope you find a fix to your other problems.

I have it installed and open on my Evo and so far it's only showing Adobe books(i only have one) and I cant find where to add my B&N account how do you do this?
Ideas anyone? It still isn't booting and I'm at a loss what to do now.
No idea about the boot problem, but for the book issue, I back up everything with Calibre, and backup the Calibre library as well! It does a good job of puting the books in the right place. I don't know about an Evo, but if it is Android, I would think it has a "My Files" directory on the SD Card, within that directory copy your books to books in my files and that should work. If there is a problem, try using Calibre. Sometimes there are DRM issues and you can't open things unless it is in the correct directory (happened to me a couple of times) and Calibre can fix the problem just by adding them to it's library and copying them to the reader. In Alkido you will have to click the home button(top left) then SD Card (bottom left) and you can browse to where your books are.
Once you backup your books, and all the apps you need, maybe try starting with a clean slate and a new ROM. There is an installer to install a copy of the stock ROM and remove CWM if you need to send for warranty replacement. I don't know exactly where is is, but it was in the nook forum here.

Yes you can. Install CM7 and use the Nook app. Any book you bought that is in your library (or archived) will always be available to the app.

Now to make backup of my factory files, I tried the thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1142983 which guides me to backup my files. but the noogie.img link does not have any download in that thread. what really is noogie and please give me an alternate link to noogie.img.

You need to follow the redirect link on NookDevs. The page has been moved. noogie.img is available from that page.

Wait... are you trying to do the manual rooting process? There are automated rooters. Noogie is used to backup and root manually (if you want to).

Assuming you used the latest TouchNooter, Super Manager should work. I think SM is new from the version of TN that I last used.
Or, once Market is working, download your favorite.

my doubts dont seem to be ending any soon....
-i'm done with everything, even market's working. but i couldn't search in market. when i type in search box and enter - no response...
-i managed to find 'file manager'' in top free app list and installed it. now when i try to install the apks in micro sd card, it says 'for security,ur phone is set to block non android sourced apps',though i checked 'allow non market apps' in nook color tools. suggest me a way to install the apps in card.
-the market shows the apps with $ pricing, how to make it regional?
-sometimes while swiping to scroll, the page goes to the end all the way...
-after rooting the wifi is disconnecting frequently
thanks in advance...

Sounds like you need to allow 3rd party apps. Launch NookColor Tools, then toggle the Allow Non-Market Apps settings off and back on. Then try again.

This may be related to the B&N firmware version you're running. Apparently, the NST v1.1.0 has known problems with some 802.11n networks, WPA2 settings and various other random wifi issues. I don't believe TN touches wifi, so it shouldn't have changed.
would you say go ahead, if i say i'm gonna restore the factory settings with the backup and root again?
and yes, i rooted with the latest touchnooter (the link u posted)

[Q] Best way to root NST No glowlight

This forum is confusing and when I tryed to root my nst with the TOUCHNOOTER,it came out buggy. What is the best way to root the nst on 1.1.2 and does tinynoot work with the nst 1.1.2?
Same question here. After I came home with it and tried to root it with TouchNooter, I made a brick out of it. Successfully unbricked it, but willing to be more carefull nexttime.
It would be nice to make a step by step guide how to root it, possibly with photos/video of these steps. I would like to root mine with support of the gApps, then install Launcher 7, and enable multitouch and NoRefresh. If anybody with time on his hands would do such guide for me, I would be very gratefull.
Tinynoot will work on the NST as well as the Glowworm.
BUT tinynoot does not support the Google app market - it is an extremely minimal approach intended only to get root and install a bare minimum of apps. One of the apps is the Amazon appstore, which may be enough for some folks.
If you want access to the full Google market or to gmail or google maps, you need to use one of the root methods that can make those happen. (Even Tasker was a big PITA to install on my tinynooted device because I had to go hunt down some supporting files that normally come from Google maps to get it to run.)

[Q] Root Nook Simple Touch GlowLight

Hello,
I would like to root a Nook Simple Touch GlowLight. The only reason for doing this is to install Kindle for Android. I have found three particularly popular threads for achieving this:
NookManager

TouchNooter
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1343143
GlowNooter

Can you please advise which of these I would be best to follow? Can you also recommend anything else that I must (or should) do following the recommended procedure - Any particular apps or configurations for either optimal enjoyment of Kindle for Android or the usability of the device (regarding refresh, etc).
Thank you.

I have only used two of above for 4 x NST not a NSTG so far.
Now I've literally got two NSTG arrived today waiting at home for me to play with (Just been reduced to £49 in UK so I expect a lot more visitors to this forum asking such questions).
If your new to Nook simple touch devices then please be aware of firmwares. A lot of older more mature stuff for NST relies on the v1.1 firmware base. All new NST and NSTG in UK and other places will already be on v1.2 from factory.
NookManager is newer and supports v2. It has a backup feature. Before anything else boot off it. Backup your NSTG. Connect usb cable to PC while using Nookmanager and copy the backup to a PC.
I would also use Noogie and make another backup a different way.
That way if you screw anything up and or don't like root method you can go back.
Before rooting I strongly recommend registering your stock nook and if your going to stick with version 2 update to latest one following instructions on B&N website.
Touchnooter is a lot older and I tend to use that when I am using a v1 base (you lose some features but can gain a very quick lag free multitouch norefresh NST).
I have never used glownooter. Obviously it sounds more NSTG specific which is a good thing.
Personally I don't know how much the NST and NSTG differ internally. Certainly if you start messing around with different kernels make sure they support NSTG or you may lose the glow ability.
I will be trying the NookManager route first. Highly recommend coolreader app as alternative to BnN reader.
I'll let you know how it goes with mine. I will be using it stock for little while first though.
Oh the kindle app did not work that great when I tried it. If you really want kindle that much is it worth buying one..... Certainly if its not up to your standard then use your backup return nook to stock. Only then de-register device and return it.
If running v2 firmware then rather than norefresh (works best on v1) you would be after fastmode. I would not recommend that for reading ebooks. Scrolling PDFs maybe.
Crispy
Noogie guide for backing up
You can use winimage mention in above guide to stick Nookmanager on a sdcard too.
When booting off Nookmanager say no to wifi, Rescue->Backup, Use rest of space on SD card, create backup.
Obviously make sure your device is well charged and choose a big enough sd card to hold the backup. Its about 300MB compressed. As the backup is stored on a second partiton on the sd card windows won't easily be able to access it. To copy to PC once complete plug a usb cable in while running nookmanager and it will appear as mass storage device. Some of my nook's usb cables were charge only ones (very handy) so if cable is thin and long use a different cable.
Also for others reading the NSTG also comes with the most compact usb charger I've ever seen. Its actually smaller than my samsung one. NST comes with no charger.
Based on this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1961835 avoid using glownooter
To get fastmode working I've confirmed v166 kernel works with glowlight.
Thank you for your reply
Perhaps you might be able to help here, too?

The nook glow-light I am trying to root has 1.1.5 firmware. The device got rooted but the market app doesn't work properly in order to download the opera browser (the other one doesn't work either), and the amazon app store keeps telling me: "Please enter a valid email and password" and doesn't let me log in with the same credentials that I use to log in from my pc. The opera app isn't even listed among the handful of apps listed on the Market app. What can the problem be? How can it be fixed? If I can't properly use this old nook model as an e-ink android I will have to return it. The only reason I purchased it was to root it.
If anyone know the fix please explain it to me in simple terms as I am not a great tech savvy.
Thx.

You should definitely return to stock firmware and update to 1.2.1 before anything else. Then, you can re-root and enjoy.
Restoring to stock and re-rooting can be done with the NookManager rooting tool. Updating your software version can be done by following the instructions at B&N.
