[Q] Trying to get temp root - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just got a new MyTouch 4G:
Android version 2.3.4
HTC Sense version 2.1
Software number 2.19.531.1
Wanted to get temp root so I followed instructions from:
http://theunlockr.com/2010/12/10/how-to-temporarily-root-the-t-mobile-mytouch-4g-htc-glacier
Set the USB Debugging to ON
Set the Fastboot to OFF
Installed "com.modaco.visionaryplus.r14.apk".
Temp Root After Reboot is ON
System R/W After Root is ON
Then I clicked TempRoot Now
Visionaryplus is rooting device, please wait ...
I have waited for more than 10 minutes.
Nothing happened.
What should I do?

First downgrade to the pre-OTA MT4G build, which is Android 2.2.1. Then you'll be able to use Visionary to temp-root. Sounds like you need to do a little searching/reading. This has been covered over and over.

Yeah. Also VISIONary will only work for good-chip phones (or bad, may be mixed up), but gfree works with whatever you have. To root the mytouch, YOU MUST BE ON FROYO

Hey fellows..Does anyone have a link to the PD15IMG.zip file? Its dead in the link in the tutorial to downgrade to 2.2.1 and I can't find another one. Trying to downgrade my buddies on 2.3.4 with 89.0005. Thanks

My Wildfire with 2.2.1

I have rooted and upgraded my Wildfire to 2.2.1 from 2.1, worked fine and still does, but i have lost root.
I have read that i cant use the "unrevoked method" yet to get root back as it wont work with Froyo. Is this true or is it safe to do so.
If I cant use that method then can anyone suggest another way.
Thanks and be gentle as i am new to android.

Hi, if you updated with OTA update (official) or with RUU, you can't root. We have to wait until some depeloper find out the way to root the new HBOOT.
I updated with a file called signed_121810_120233.zip if that helps.
Anyone know about that file, if its official or RUU

I'm downloading it to see if it has the new HBOOT. Give me a minute
EDIT: It doesn't contain the new HBOOT, so you should be able to root. Trying Unrevoked is safe. If you had the new HBOOT, it would hang, but you wouldn't have any problem.
For what I read, you haven't run Unrevoked yet. Do it.
Thank you for your time and effort, i will try it later tonight when i get back home.
Will post and tell you the outcome.
Thanks

You have done this in the same computer you did the time it worked, right? For the HBOOT drivers in windows and all these things.
Looking at the zip you sent me, you should be able to root, but I guess that if you lost root, there is something that made you lose it. :S
If you want to try to get root anyway, try Unrevoked in Ubuntu. If not, Superoneclick, or Z4root.
But doesn't look good to root by now... :S
Yeah the exact same pc that i first used to go from 2.1 to 2.2.
Is Z4 safe to use

Yes, the worst thing that can happen is that the phone is slow until you reboot, if it can't get root. But htese methods are Temp root. It would be just to see if you can get root access, which I doubt at the moment.
Thanks for your help, i think i will just wait until unrevoked gets updated.

Of course. I just tried with v3.31, which must be the version you tried. I got your same error.
I will let you know. It must be near, because in v3.3 changelog they say "No update for Wildfire yet, sorry", so they are working on it.

[Q] Any hope for Gingerbread OTA myTouch users that want root?

Is there any way to root it after the Gingerbread update? Or is there anybody working on it?

Yes here is how i did it http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1178912 follow the G2 method, when you get to the part where you put this in # /data/local/tmp/misc_version -s 1.19.531.1 make sure you put the version you want like 1.17.531.2 not 1.19.531.1 I used PD15IMG_Glacier_TMOUS_1.17.531.2_Radio_12.28b.60.1 40e_26.03.02.26_M_release_155771_signed renamed it PD15IMG then put it on sdcard
Thanks for that but.... I really would prefer to root w/o downgrading if possible?
I know it can be done but I suspect I'll have to wait until someone does it and shows me how.
I've tried The Unlocker's techniques with worked before but Visionary won't run on Gingerbread, AAMOF it FUBARS the phone and has to be removed to get the phone working correctly again.

Can't root 2.3.4 but here is an alternative

This is the way I went about rooting the Mytouch running the stock 2.3.4
First downgrade from the stock 2.3.4 to 2.2.1 for rooting.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1178912
Second use gfree to get s-off.
You need visionary. Second link.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=858996
http://android.modaco.com/topic/320350-19nov-r14-visionary-one-click-root/
Third flash the enh h-boot and recovery.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1200147
Now is the time, if you choose, to backup. Start flashing rom of your choose. There are many 2.3.3 and higher based roms to be back on Gingerbread
Thanks to all the developers for the links.
If this is of help to anyone please just hit the thanks button.
Thanks I guess

Yeah Milehigh, that's the only way to do it as of right now. I'm sure eventually one of the brilliant people on here will find some way to truly root it, but for now this is all you can do if you got the OTA and want root access.

Yeah, ok that was the point of his post, title should be” you can't root 2.3.4 but here is an alternative”
Also his method is mentioned in about 100 other threads already, why do we need to post out again.
Nothing against the poster, I know he is just trying to be helpful.
I think it was a very helpful post. I wonder how many of your 3 posts helped anyone.
And really, what does it matter what software version you root?

OK, i recently got the OTA update for 2.3.4 on my T-mobile mytouch 4g. I was temp rooted, as to get my feet wet because I was new to root and the whole android system. I temp rooted with z4root. Can anyone post updates for anything on rooting 2.3.4+? This thread can be for all updates, or for just you guys to help me. You choose, but can you at least help me? thank you!

i'm not responsible for anything that happens to your device.
Just like he said the best way is to downgrade through that method. And perm root either by the advanced way cyanogen wrote up. Or more user friendly ones that just require terminal emulator and not adb. u can find any of them through basic searches or through the development section.

1-click root like Z4root isn't available for any phone with Gingerbread 2.3.4 and up.
Judging by some posts on various boards, it won't ever be available, since developers aren't working on any such solution.
You can read some entertaining read:
http://www.mydroidworld.com/forums/...otloaders-rooting-manufacturers-carriers.html
And remember some things:
1) Since that time, Samsung and HTC has officially declared they aren't going to lock their bootloaders. Actually, Samsung kept it open all the way, and HTC declared they're going to unlock them starting this summer.
2) There was no easy root app for Gingerbread 2.3.4 ever made, even though an exploit exists that allows temp-rooting. Which means - there are no devs interested in making rooting easier than it currently is, or they're prevented from making rooting easier.
About devs not willing to make it stupid easy to root anymore - you might read Cyanogen's post somewhere, also from several months ago.
Ok. I've researched, and found something called GingerBreak, but I don't really understand it.

To restate what Jack_R1 said. There is no root for gingerbread on this phone. It's simple enough to revert back to 2.2.1 and root once you are there.
[in my words]
If you afraid of ADB and the SKD, and you are to lazy to do some research, you shouldn't be rooting your phone anyway.
[/in my words]
now i took the time to put all of the basic information that you'll need in the newcomers thread. Link in my signature. Take your time read though that and you can root your phone. Regardless of the version you are using. And there is a link, with video, for you setting up your ADB.
Thank you all for replys. you can keep them coming if you wish.
neidlinger, in your signature, it says how to root with root.sh. Is this a perm root or temp root? And is it compatible with 2.3.4? How would I unroot?
EDIT: read on xda that all i need to do is download the froyo rom, boot into recovery or hboot (sorry i forgot), and flash it? Am i correct?

EDIT: sorry, a simple google fixed it. And all i do is flash it, then im on stock froyo and can do any root i want? Will all my contacts and apps be saved and stuff?
Wait how do I flash a ROM from hboot? And afterwards, how do I get out of hboot? Sorry, I just want to be extremely sure I don't brick my phone or f**k it up in any possible way.

well, once you have the PD151IMG.zip in the ROOT (not in any folders) of your sdcard, the bootloader/hboot should recognize it, and will ask you if you want to update. hit yes, and the rest will be done for you. DO NOT PULL THE BATTERY DURING THE UPDATE PROCESS, THIS WILL BRICK THE DEVICE. after that just reboot (first reboot should take longer than usual, it's normal)
if for some reason the bootloader/hboot isn't seeing your PD151IMG.zip, then redownload the zip again.
It did the no image thing... retry? My stats are:
Glacier PVT SHIP S-ON
HBOOT-0.89.0005
MICROP-0429
RADIO-26.11.04.03_M
eMMC-boot
Apr 14 2011,13:18:22
EDIT: I connected it to my computer, and the zip file is named PD15IMG and a lot of other things. Do I delete all of that and rename it PD15IMG.zip?

[Q] Cant find a 2.3.4 Completely Stock Rooted rom

So I've just downgraded and rooted, I'm trying to find a 2.3.4 (Gingerbread) stock rom that is rooted. I can't seem to find it anywhere and I've been looking for a while. Correct me if I'm wrong but re-updating to 2.3.4 after downgrading to root will either not work or not stay rooted right? If the update will work I'll just do that but if not can someone provide a link to the rom I'm looking for?
Ive seen the stock senes(less) rom but I'm literally looking for completely stock. normal mytouch sense and all.
