Post-Root Setup Instructions?

I know many of us are new to the whole rooting thing. I'm coming from the Windows Mobile world of custom ROMs, kitchens, etc., but I do have some linux experience. However, I can't for the life of me figure out how to do a lot of what comes "standard" in MoDaCo's ROM. Obviously it would be easier to simply install Paul's ROM and be done with it, but I'd really like to learn how to do it on my own too.
So, that being said, maybe we can pull together some tutorials, guides, and/or links to existing guides which explain how to go about setting up our Rooted phones manually. Here are some of the built-in mods the MoDaCo ROM comes with which would be nice to be able to do manually or on a one-off basis:
Included in MoDaCo 1.1 'core':
Rooted with 'adb remount' permission and superuser APK
A2SD included (fully automatic thanks cyanogen!) create a EXT2 partition as your second partition to use. dalvik-cache remains on device.
Added Jbed Java
Added Dropbear SSH running by default, check 'About' screen for password (port 2222). You can now remove this by running /system/bin/removedropbear.sh
Added Notes app from Dragon
Added Spare Parts (run it and switch the 2 animation types to 'fast' for an even better experience!)
Added android-wifi-tether 1.60 pre3 (props to the developer, this is a great app!)
Added WiFi Status indicator, with kind permission of Andrew Schwimmer
Added busybox 1.15.2 tweaked such that 'get information' in Swapper now works as desired
Added nano 2.09 text editor for use in shell mode
Added parted and sqlite tools
Added terminfo and settings to boot.img to allow nano etc. use

Moved Quickoffice to data partition to allow easy uninstall

Superuser Whitelist App
I found two threads here that describe how to install Superuser.apk.

Using the first one, I was able to get the files onto the phone and I used the chmod commands found in the second file in the hopes this would work; however, whenever I try to use it, nothing happens. The ES File Explorer, in particular, used to work with MoDaCo. When I'd try to browse as root, Superuser would pop-up and ask if I wanted to grant the app permissions. Now it just hangs there (black screen) and ES File Explorer says I don't have root access. Other Root apps work fine though, it's just they don't seem to be dependant on Superuser Whitelist.
'adb remount' permission
This requires that the default.prop file be edited from ro.secure=1 to ro.secure=0. Unfortunately, I can't seem to get this file to stick. If I use the mv command using adb shell, I get some kind of permissions error. If I use the cp command when booting into the recovery menu and using adb shell, the file reverts to the original on boot. Or maybe it's simply not being overwritten, but not throwing any errors either

I think I may have found a thread that will help with the default.prop changes. Looks like this has to be done in the recovery.img which apparently overwrites any modifications in the root of the device on each reboot. I'll post an update if/when I figure it out.

The adb remount permission issue is driving me crazy. Please keep us updated if you figure out a way of resetting that without installing a new ROM.

I ended up modifying one of the MoDaCo update scripts to set up ADB Remount, Superuser.apk, and Busybox. It's been working fine for me, but be sure to do a backup before you apply the update. Check it out here:

Busybox update.zip for incredible?

Does an update.zip exist for the incredible to add busybox to a stock rooted Rom? Or is there anyone willing to make one? I found one for the hero where they stripped down a rom and just left busybox, apps2sd, and Su. It would be greatly appreciated by many noobs like myself.

I believe Stericson has an app out that installs busy box for you with a single click. Just search "Busy box" in the market and it should come up. Not sure as to whether or not it works on the Incredible, as I've an Evo, but it should.

I tried that but it failed saying either I it couldn't remount or I wasn't rooted.

I think the unrevoked tool installs it for you.

I'll try that again, but I used 3.0 to root it. Maybe 3.1 will install it, I thought that was only windows fixes from 3.0

kind of a rookie here, but couldn't you just install titanium backup and then click the problems button. I think it downloads and install busybox??

Wouldn't be permenant since NAND is still locked. Would lose it after reboot and have to do same thing over and over after every reboot.

Apply this payload-update.zip and it will install busybox. Just go to recovery and choose install zip from SD card and then choose this one
Then to test
go to cmd prompt
type adb shell
then when in shell type
busybox and you will see its now installed.

If you want the latest busybox, I've attached 1.16.2 freshly compiled.
One issue I ran into was that all the info on the forums has busybox being installed in /system/xbin. The PATH variable has /system/bin before /system/xbin, so that means the original symlinks to "toolbox" are getting picked up first - I don't know if I'm the only one who was annoyed by ls -al returning "-al: No such file or directory"
I guess "toolbox" didn't support this, so you can either install busybox to /system/bin, or leave it in /system/xbin and create a symlink called toolbox in /system/bin that points to busybox in /system/xbin.
As usual, backup your "toolbox" binary first before removing it from /system/bin.
Now ls -al returns a correct listing and I see no app breakage by the symlink method - Ti Backup runs just fine without needing to install its own busybox.
*edit - I guess this doesn't really answer the OP, but I figured I would share this anyway.

ok so I found a side effect - WiFi doesnt work after this. There seems to be a problem with dhcpcd and the new busybox, even though external dhcp support was compiled in...guess I've got some digging to do...

that is a busybox install I ripped out of a N1 froyo root update.zip Cyanogen did, modded for the D-Inc.
Seems to work well for me.

Not Really
... but it does NOT install the newest busybox; just one which is compatible with Titanium Backup.
Busybox.net shows v1.17 is the latest (unstable) release, and v1.16.2 is the latest stable. Titanium Backup pushes something in the v1.15 area.

Also when I did it through titanium and went to busybox to install latest it said my system had none.

I have a busybox 1.16.2 version that I ripped from one of the posted ROMs that I can attach. It works on the Inc, and I think the whole DHCP / resolv.conf thing works too. At least it's the only version I tried where I can get wget working properly. You may need to create /system/etc/resolv.conf with some valid nameservers first though. Let me know if you want me to post it.

Hmm, nevermind. I tried with the busybox version I have, and WiFi does not get an IP address. Seems to be the same problem.
If you track it down, when you compile your version check if wget works properly also. There were some issues with that and DNS lookups. Don't forget you may need a valid resolv.conf.

I second this , I used ones off the rooting forums and it never quite worked right until I let titanium backup install it for me. Also its much easier than pushing files to your device if you are unfamiliar with doing it, because you can download tb from market and it does the work for you

Easiest way to stay current is to install the Stericson app. It can't install it for you due to the NAND lock, but
1) It's trivial to extract it and install manually from the .apk file.
2) It will give you an easy notification via the marketplace that a new version is available.

Asus programs on modded tablet, and some CM9 questions

Hi All,
I set out to flash my tablet back to stock with the goal of copying some of the awesome asus-specific widgets and applications and installing them back on my tablet after I re-rooted/modded it. I accomplished part of this goal by finding some of the .apk's I wanted, like the Asus weather & battery widgets, the Supernote.apk, anda few others (I still wasn't able to find the Swype Keyboard.apk file)
Anywho, I tried to install the .apk's on my tablet after re-installing cm9 and rooting it but it just says "Application not installed". Anyone have any ideas? And can anyone elaborate on how to copy that swype keyboard APK that I desperately want? I found the other .apk's in the /system/app folder but swype wasn't there.
My other questions relate to CM9:
1) is there any way to decrease the boot time for CM9, or at least customize the boot screen?
2) I'm currently running an older version of cm9 (rc0 unofficial) and I have the stable rc1 of cm9 but when i tried to flash it, it didn't work (i can get the exact error message if needed). Did I do something wrong in updating or is RC1 not compatible with the device? Should I just wait till CM10 comes out?
3) When I initially rooted/flashed cm9, I was able to connect my tablet to my computer and the root of the / directory, but after flashing stock and trying again, I don't have the same luck. Is there some step I missed?

I haven't tried this, but it may work. If you have ADB on your computer, try doing an adb push [name of file].apk /system/app/
If you can't do that, try copy/pasting them there using a root explorer on your device itself. Make sure the permissions are set properly (I don't remember what they are off the top of my head).
After doing that, reboot. See if it works.
As for your CM Questions:
1) I'm not sure if you can reduce the time. For customizing the animation, look at something like Rom Toolbox Pro (which also includes a root explorer like I mentioned above).
2) All CM9 TF300T downloads are located here: http://get.cm/?device=tf300t RC1 is listed there so I'm assuming you did something wrong (what's the error you get?)
3) Did you re-root? I'm not sure I understand.

I apologize for the vagueness of my original post. I made this thread in anticipation of flashing everything back to stock, trying to copy over those Asus-specific .apk's (which I managed to do), and then re-rooting/re-flashing CM9.
I flashed the .30 firmware to get back to stock and found the Asus widgets & apk's I was looking for in the /system/app directory. After some bootloops and other fun, I was able to flash back to CM9 and when I tried to install the .apk's I immediately get the message "The Application was not installed"
Of the asus items I wanted, Supernote and Polaris Office were my top two picks, and I was able to acquire Supernote through 3-rd party means and install it. So I'm stoked to have Supernote on a CM9-flashed tablet. I wasn't able to find Polaris Office so I hope to at least be able to find a work-around to install that.
In response to #3 - yes I re-rooted my tablet (lost root with the .30 firmware) and previously I was able to browse the root directory of my tablet while it was connected to my computer. Now, I can only browse the SD card. I still haven't figured out a solution to this, but I just transfer files to my memory card and then to my tablet from there. I'm looking into how to do OTA file transfers via bluetooth or wi-fi, if at all possible.

So did you try what I suggested in my post (pushing the files to /system/app on your tablet, rather than trying to install them through File Browser or whatever)?
I'm not sure if they rely on any custom Asus framework stuffs, like with many other OEMs. I personally doubt it because Asus barely changes anything. I think it *should* work, but can't guarantee it.
The easiest way to get the files to /system/app (if you're not very ADB or tech. savvy) is to download a root explorer (like Rom Toolbox Pro has, for example) and copy all the .apks that you want from your sdcard to /system/app.

I haven't tried pushing the files via ADB yet. I just wiped out my computer so I need to re-install the drivers to get the tablet recognized and/or the the Android SDK.
In the 3rd point of your point, do you mean my external SD card or the internal memory?

the Transformer Pad has a good portion of internal memory partitioned as an sdcard and mounts it at /sdcard/. I haven't used an external SD card with my tablet yet. Either one should work.
I also found out that Polaris Office has some library files that you probably should grab as well. You can find them at:
/system/lib/libpolarisoffice_tablet.so
/system/lib/libpolarisofficedump.so
/system/lib/libtfapps-polaris.so
/system/lib/libtflua-polaris.so

There might be some library files for the other apps. You might want to look around in the /system/lib folder for other libraries as well.

That's awesome, thanks. If I'm able to get this working I will post a guide for others to follow. I ended up just signing up for the swype beta (which I think is stupid since I paid for that app when I bought my tablet, shouldn't have to get a reduced version)
I was able to find a working supernote.apk app on a 3rd-party website and it installed and worked perfectly.
My other issue I'm having is I try to push the files with ADB and it tells me my tablet is read-only? it gives that same message no matter which directory I try to push to. I have the superuser app and have root, but superusers' log shows the 'adb shell' is consistently being denied root permission (if i try to do su or something similar). Any thoughts?

You need to remount your system as read-write. Trying doing an adb remount. If that doesn't work, try typing the following into a terminal emulator:
su
busybox mount -o remount,rw /system

Try ADB pushing again after that.

if you are able to install the apps by adb push. then maybe a .zip file can be created and use CWM to install all the stock apps.

Well part of the issue is that I can't "su" while in adb shell. It says permission denied. When I type ADB devices normally, it'll list my device. But when I'm in "adb shell" it doesn't show anything. "adb remount" gives me the message "error: device not found".
Any other suggestions?

That's weird. I've never seen that before. Are you certain that your adb drivers are installed properly? You can always use a terminal emulator on your device itself to remount the system as read/write and then use adb afterwards.

I'm pretty sure my drivers are installed correctly. Everything shows up in device manager, "adb devices" lists my device, fastboot flashes files just fine, so yea.
And yea I have the terminal emulator on my tablet and I've used it before for some stuff (installing Ubuntu) so I will try the steps you guys have mentioned. I'm in the process of trying out some other ROM's right now (Hydro atm, and then probably CleanROM) so once I go back to stock and have access to the appropriate files I'll try these steps.

I used Wug's all in one root. All went well. It also included the busybox app. I did the installation using the default choice of system/xbin, which appeared in a "how-to" video as well. In the video it showed that it loaded successfully. Mine did not load successfully. It specifically said that there was a conflict with the location. I tried system/bin and it basically said the same.
My main question is. 1. What does busybox do that I will need on this device, and 2. How then do I load it, as in, what options should I choose for location? Or delete altogether and reload it? and that question is asked because I want to make sure that deleting the app will not mess up my root/rom/twrp or anything else.

busybox provides a set of linux commands needes especially when you want to run scripts e.g. in init.d
What version of Android do you have installed? Most likely there is no space left on /system and so installation of busybox failed. If you are on a custom rom, you can try to flash micro / pico gapps instead of the normal ones to leave some space left on /system for busybox, or you need to root your device "systemless" and you can install busybox on the partition provided by SuperSU ...

Nexus 7 - permissions issues and rooting

Hey people!
I just got a nexus 7 2012 and i am wanting to mount it in my car. So i wanted to do a few things before that.
I updated to official 5.1.1 via OTA. Everything is STOCK
First step was rooting which SEEMED to work (DID it via WUGS). It installed SU and busybox. Next step was to create my own bootanimation
This is where the issues have started. I can not change permissions or move any files to the system directory even with W/R option turned on
I can delete the files but can not copy files to the directories. I can no change permissions in ANY directory.
I have tried in root explorer mounting r/w ES file explorer R/W ... i tried to install a new busy box and it installs then immediately says "you installed but it seems there is an older version on the system" i can not uninstall busybox. I tried mounting in terminal and it says all partitions are EXT 4. I have tried rerooting. Root check says everything is fine. SU seems to be working fine (it elevates permissions for all the root apps).
But for the life of me it will not copy anything into / or /system. :crying:
Should i just forget it and install another rom, WIPE everything and start again? If ROM which one is the best at the moment (nexus 2012)

After 2-3 hours of messing about... I just TWRP and flashed a different SU and it starting working.
