RAM usage in android 4.0 - Nexus S General

currently, I consider whether upgrade or not ?
I concern poor performance when upgraded.
Could you give me idea?

updated some days ago (but from a CustomMod to another)
it feels actually smoother and faster.
so i guess StockROM will also give you no problems.
just try it. make an backup before and invest some minutes, then you will see if u like it.

Opinions on the stock 2.2 Froyo anyone?

Hi guys,
I can't comment yet as I'm getting my Wildfire for Christmas, but I have been following the forum for quite a while now
I know it's not the Desire, so I don't expect the same kind of performance, but I'm sure the Wildfire will cover all my "phone" necessities for a while.
Just wondering what your experiences have been so far with the new OTA stock Froyo.
It seems that opinions are split, some say it works smoother others say it doesn't, etc...
Could you let us all know what you rate and what not on the, really rather long awaited, 2.2 upgrade and if it was worth the wait?
Nice question. Well put.
I'm in the same boat with you. I could update right now if I wanted, but.. I need to know that I _need_ to, that there are advantages beyond the apps2sd, chrome2phone, new gmail app, etc. Advantage(s) as in speed, stability, less ram, less space, less battery..
No speed improvement..
More memory usage..
OTA removes root, updates HBOOT and then you CANT'T root it with Unrevoked at this moment.
It's been said that 2.2 is 4.5 times faster than 2.1 ->
But how does that reflect on Wildfire?
Linpack is an app that measures the speed ( greenecomputing.com/apps/linpack/ ). You can go through some scores sent by users at greenecomputing.com/apps/linpack/latest-posts/
Would be nice to have users score their wildfire on 2.1 , and then score it on 2.2
Yes, it's been stated. But, as it appears, this release is not with enabled JIT compiler, which was the reason of such performance improvement. Or maybe the JIT is on but it doesn't impact the performance on Wildfire..
I have tested updated Wildfire with linpack and got ridiculous score of 1,45.
While mine with Openfire v2.3 ROM scores 2.4 - 3.0 (depends on overclock settings).
Before the update my wildfire had an MFLOP value of 1.174. The MFLOP value now is 0.94.. 20 percent LOWER than on the Eclair! It is even that worse that just one hourer ago my phone was just blocked and it had to reboot itself.
I realy tought that the froyo would be faster, thats what you read everyware. So a did a effort to get it (my phone was rooted), and now I'm stuck with a ROM that is slower than the previous one and, as drioo mentioned, I cannot change to an other one.
I'm thinking about a factory reset, perhaps that will do the trick.
But before this, and as the mather of fact, also now, I just love the phone
My phone scores around 2.289 - 2300 MFLOPS with no overclock and with stock Froyo, dont know how much it was on 2.1. And Froyo sucks my battery very well =/.

How much quicker is it draining your battery? Can you still get a full day's worth of use?
Could it be that you have been "playing" more than usual with it because of the upgrade?

Let us know if the reset helped please
Haven't real seen any benefits other than the install to SD card options, its no faster and app brain fast install no longer works. Is there away to revert to 2.1 ?
Also do live wallpapers work now I downloaded one but don't know how to apply them.

With 2.1 my phone's battery could last more than 3 days with normal use without need of recharging. Now it was 23 hours with same use when I had to recharge it again. First I thought it was because of task killers that are killing apps and Froyo is launching them again, it was draining my battery 1% by a minute =D. I've uninstalled all taskkillers, but something is still draining my battery more than Eclair.
I'm thinking about factory reset and updating again with no custom apps installed, but I'm not sure if it will help.
I am a bit neutral. Wifi tether and appstoSD are nice extras. But the performance did not increase that much. So not that great then I expected it to be. Can't do much about it now, I used OTA in thinking it would be great. So my HBOOT will be locked for some time untill the wizzkids get her cracked again. Then I will just overclock that sucker again
Is anyone having or not having issues with eduroam wifi networks after upgrading Wildfire to Froyo? --> Help please

Thanks. Your message made me cancel my update download, and think of the things that I managed to do with Wildfire on Android 2.1, like:
- good setup (homescreen, widgets, etc)
- voice search active (although i must admit.. now that i have it, i don't use it)
- tasker
- etc, etc.. customizations and then some more to make the phone "my phone"
Do I want something more? NO! Well, I would like it to be just a tad faster, maybe even consume a bit less battery at times.
The rest..
- ChromeToPhone - dunno what others use this for, but I would mainly use it to download APKs. But.. there's Dropbox for that
- Tethering - no need
- Apps2SD (= more space) - well, it's good to have some sort of limitation. God knows what sort of crap I'd install otherwise that would just rotten on the SD
- newer gmail&co apps - the current one is just fine
- etc, etc
I CAN LIVE WITHOUT!
I need to tell myself I can live without the latest update, the latest gadget.
So Android 2.1, I stay with you!
PS: I love Wildfire as well. Perfect shape (not a brick!), good battery time, almost ok CPU, good price
Battery works fine, even better then before froyo.
Way faster, more stable.
App2SD
C2DM push notifications
New gmail app and youtube app.
Support for 2.2 apps.
Wifi tethering
Security improvements
Lockscreen pin instead of pattern.
Better Exchange/hotmail Activesync support.
and so on.
The new market is included and will be pushed to other devices over the coming weeks even if you have 2.1.
Google market updates are pushed through google and not HTC.
If your device runs slower do a factory reset.
the only problem my wife had after the update is that froyo had disabled her APN settings (3G) and all had to be enabled/add settings.
other than that all is good , even a bit more responsive on the touch.
@ Skye Menjou & webjunky
did your phones have a lot of modifications done prior to upgrading to froyo?
I am starting to see a trend emerging (me thinks), that those that had already heavily customised their phones are the ones that are experiencing the same or slightly worse performance of the Wildfire after the upgrade.
What do you guys think?
My non-branded, never-rooted Wildfire runs much, much faster with the Froyo update. I did hard-reset the phone after the upgrade. No problems with battery life - if anything it's better than it was (there's also a great HTC battery widget available on the Froyo ROM).
Other advantages of the Froyo update that I've actually used/noticed include the Wi-Fi hotspot, tethering, updated apps including a new camera app and additional apps seem to be showing up in the market.
Great work by HTC... I've had this phone for about a month and already got a software upgrade that makes it even better
Now... if only they'll give us access to htcsense.com
I've noticed that loading your battery is going faster. Today, my battery was in half a hour full.
I don't have anything rom or Kernel related flashed
I do have a lot of apps installed.Like swype ,touchdown and others.
A lot of my default settings are modified.
Most people have problems due crapware.
Badly written apps with terrible system hooks.
That or they rooted it and installed the half working roms or the clockwork mod.

ICS (aurora) vs stock gingerbread

So besides extra apps and features... would there be any changes performance wise.
Could i expect any optimizations for filesystem (tho ginger should be ext4 already), better multitasking / cpu and ram management. Or would ICS actually use more system resources.
So if i were not to upgrade cuz its the latest and to "go with the flow" .. .what real advantages would i have on u8800 with ICS over ginger.
And yes i know the release isnt perfect yet (but lets assume the bugs were fixed).
Or its just ...for the sake of having a new version..
The battery on ICS lasts for much more time that on GB. The performance looks nice, very fast, the wifi its faster than GB. And of course, the design of ICS its amazing!
Battery? on idle/low load or ... eg when gaming (high cpu load etc)?
But is the performance overall (gaming mainly - aint gonna notice much with most apps anyways).
Also hows the ICS rooting (the aurora one) - already rooted?
Any features for the gaming side (like better opengl etc).
ofc x5 sets hardware limits (unless even ginger doesn't unlock its full potential).
I say about battery when I stay many hours with wifi on surfing, downloading, etc etc..
I didnt tested with games...
I think I have my ICS rooted, but know you ask, i will confirm that LOL

It's installed on top of rooted oficial 2.3.5 so yes, ofc it is rooted
Performance is considerably better than stock 2.3, about par with MIUI 2.3. Game performance is excellent, however beware that some games may not work because they're just not compatable with ICS. There are also apps not compatable with ICS, so if there's anything you desperately want to use with ICS, check the developer's info first.
If all bugs were fixed, it'd be AMAZING! Performance is good, everything works awesomely. My only problem is the random crashes/reboots, which is, as said, a bug, so if that was fixed I'd be happy

I don't think it's exactly installed on top of 2.3.5. You need to do the official upgrade first to update the file system to ext4 (I think...)
I think you have to try it to see for your self.
I was afraid that changing to ics would make my phone not as good or fast as te official... but believe me, it's like I have a completely new phone.
It's much faster in every thing and the battery lasts much more that GB.
Wireless speed is faster but ping is higher.
Go for Aurora mod and you wont regret it.
With the clockworkmod it's very easy to change back to official 2.3.5 anyway.

need your prove : increase battery life and your Note1 speed for >20%

Just got NOTE1 from friend who jump to other SS note family due to this one so lag.
Have upgraded it to stock rom 4.1.2 from ICS last month. Anyway, battery life and speed still so bad.
After play around for some more week (never try any custom rom so far) I found small trick (which I wish it become a big trick across other Android device). I just "REMOVE" SD card out from the slot, reinstal app to only internal storage. I got a very good battery life and faster speed.
I post this small trick just to ask someone who have time to prove this. For stock rom I get a good improvement. So it will be a hug help to those custom rom who has good optimization already.
If my understanding correcly. The other phone don't have external storage bay (like I-phone) has better performance in this two espect, may be from this (not)special feature.
Thanks.

I proved it some weeks ago, I'm experienced this "booster", but I thought was only my placebo Nice to hear that I'm not the only person who noted this "trick". Stock JB ROM Philz CWR ROOT
reluctance to custom rom
combine with a few power saving option such as, disable voice command, hi galaxy, 2g/3g, etc. we will easily get longer battery life.
have use Wakelock. found the 'MS Exchange service' and 'voive command' in 1&2 top list.
hope this simole trick effective to other mobile also. they can extend their battery life, not to trow away their battery fast, help save environment.
for me i feel reluctance to go fo custom rom now though having search a few days ago.

Should I upgrade to Android M?

I'm asking this question because I want input from users who did upgrade and I'm not sure if I need the upgrade or not.
I'm currently going by the logic: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." I'm quite happy with how Android L with the stock Kernel works on my device and after looking at the features that Google advertises for M I discovered that I can live without most of them.
I'm mostly interested in the new battery management system, app permissions, overall performance improvements in apps and general usage and some misc things like the new copy/paste thingy.
So let's say that of all the above, I'm mostly interested in the new battery management system. How well does it in you experience work? How much more usage do you get out of your phone? Do the new Doze and App Standby features really work as well as Google advertises them?
Also how stable is Android M on the Nexus 4? This is the main thing that is keeping me from upgrading. I would rather stay on stock then get a few new features that may or may not work well or even worse, get a phone that crashes every 5 minutes.
I'm currently looking to use the Pure Nexus Project ROM (because I want the pure Google experience) and the TAURUS Kernel (heard a lot of good things about this Kernel and it works well with the ROM I've chosen by the reports of some users).
So what do think? Is it worth it to upgrade to M or should I wait for the next major Android version?
Thank you for reading.
I have been using One Of A Kind ROM (OCT 31, Build) and it has been rock solid for me. My phone's battery definitely lasts longer than stock Lollipop ROM. We are talking a couple of hours extra. The Doze feature works well, there is very little battery drain on standby. You will see that from battery stats. You will be waiting for a while until next iteration of Android. As you know Google has stopped supporting Nexus 4, it will be at least few weeks to a month before we get anything going for our beloved Nexus 4. Even then, the stability won't be guaranteed.
I think there are a few stable ROMs out there. Back up everything and give it a try. Worst case scenario, you go back to what you had.
I tried M, and I am not going back to Lollipop.
Yes, you should. Doze makes a difference for me, and the permission stuff is always useful to have. If you find yourself confortable with stock L, then you should flash "stock M", which is, in my opinion: Fake Nexus ROM.
I had same doubts one month ago, and I tried with a few ROMs out here, searching for stability, battery life, without compromising performance. I stopped on the ROM I linked you, try it!
Thank you both for your input.
I have decided to not upgrade for the time being.
It does have noticeable improvements, the system is smoother, battery life is longer (you should probably install Grennify to further improve the new Doze mode and App Standby functionalities),
and it comes with app permission control.
With regard to stablization, I have been using the PureNexusProject rom and the TAURUS kernel for nearly a month, no reboot no crash, no bizarre behaviors, everything seems fine and I really enjoy it.
I personally recommand you to try it, anyway it's the new Android!
I'm loving android M, Doze is really working to me!
So I think you should give it a try.

For a number or reasons. It's mostly that I'm happy how things are working right now and I don't have time to upgrade. Also, I don't have enough space to fully backup my apps.

Fastest rom with good app compatibility

What one people you may offer?
Im on 4.3.1 right now. But its little laggy.
I need fast phone, with good app compatibility.
This is my second phone.
When my Master 1gb ram device is lost or something like that. I use old LG GT540.
I want use this phone without gaaps. For better performance.
Any help with this?
