hi, i would like to make a short cut from a folder that is placed on my sd card and put it on my desktop ore in the app drawer.
is this possible and then how
File Manager HD from the market will do it....
Install app then long press on desktop screen choose the More tab.
You will see File Manager HD ....Click on it and you should get a popup. Put a check in the box for the folder you want the shortcut to point to. Finally click create button .
Astro will also allow you to create a shortcut. similar procedure to what bytemehard wrote...just do the long press - shortcut - astro and choose the folder from the pop-up. (i also tried with es file explorer but it doesn't seem to have the option)

Is it possible to make a shortcut to the Games Folder (or any other folder) as a Quick Launch button on the today screen? I have several games and it would take up too many Quick Launch slots so just using one slot to the Games folder would be great.
/Tubgirl
You'll have to create the shortcut yourself using the file explorer (copy and 'paste shortcut'). Once you have the shortcut placed in the /Windows/Start Menu/Programs folder you should be able to add it to the home screen.
In case you didn't know the Games folder itself is located in /Windows/Start Menu/Programs
Thank you profahmad. I'm new to Windows Mobile so I'm still learning.
I tried your tip and now I could add the Games folder to the quick links. Unfortunately I thought it would open upp the Games folder like it looks in the Start menu. Instead Resco Eplorer opened the folder. Well well... no biggie.
Interestingly enough when I tried the same thing with another folder called "Shoutcast" on my storage card (contains pls-files to Internet Radio channels) I could add the folder to the Quicklink but I couldn't open it.
Anyway... thanks for the help
I don't think it's possible to force the Start menu itself to open a particular folder directly. You'll have to stick with the default file-explorer you have associated with the folders, in your case that would be the Resco Explorer.

That's strange, did you create a shotcut and paste it into /Windows/Programs? I just tested it with a folder on my storage card and it works perfectly. You may have copied and pasted (and not pasted a shortcut) by accident. Try it again.

Aah you're right, Start Menu can't be forced so that's the best we can do at the moment.
I have just installed tomtom 7 and the program has not created in program icon so if i want to launch it i need to go into my sd card and click on the icon in there,, is there a way i can copy and paste the icon into where the program icons show up ?? if i can how can i do it and also find the folder ?
If you use File Explorer and long click on the .exe file on your storage card you should be able to select copy. Then go to \Windows\Start Menu\Programs (if you want to add it to a particular subfolder you can do that) and paste the link as a Shortcut (to do this scroll to the bottom of the folder, long click and from the popup select Paste as Shortcut). That way the icon will be available in your Start Menu.
thank you worked a treat..

I love this app and have intalled it onto my storage card in a folder where i keep all my .cab files, my only prblem is that i cant see it when i look for it in my programs, i,m wanting to put it as a quick link but cant? The only way i can run it is by going into file explorer and then storage card and then i the app folder i created and running it from there, where am i going wrong guys? help needed cheers
simple
go in file explorer to the file on sd card. tap and hold. click copy from the menu that appears.
open device\windows\start menu\programs and select there
(bottom screen) menu > edit > paste shortcut
rename the shortcut if you like
now you can select the file from start programs or assign it to a quick-link button.
BRILLIANT!!!

What are you using to copy and paste??
You should use file explorer or one of the 3rd party file tools to copy and "Paste Shortcut"
You browse your device to the program directory and copy and the browse to /windows/Start Menu/Programs and either past it there or into the folder of your choice under that ...
You can also do a cut and paste if you just want to move an existing shortcut ..
and just to be sure , we are talking about the "start menu" what you get when you hit the windows key?
Hi,when i hit the window key,i get a list of all the program installed such market place, you tube,email,messenger...
I would like to have igo and solitaire there as well.
on my pc i can't see the folder windows for the htc,so i directly copy and paste from the phone and it doesn't work.

You have to do it ON the phone, and paste shortcut not just paste ...
also if you cannot see the windows folder on your pc, you need to select activesync as your connection type, your phone will show up in your Computer, if your phone is not asking you what type of connection when you plug it in you go to
Settings>connections>USB to PC, and check the bottom box that says "Ask me ......"
It is no different than creating shortcuts on your pc, but it has to be done ON the phone with file explorer or the like ....
I do it alot so I know these steps do work ...

as said above, you should be doing this on the phone, not the pc.
start - file manager - menu - show all files - browse to windows - find solitaire.exe - press and hold - choose 'copy' - scroll back up and click the folder start menu - press and hold blank area of screen - choose 'paste shortcut'
press home hard key, find a blank quicklink, press it, now you should see your shortcut available.
As for why you cant see your windows folder on the PC, , , open up file manager on the PC, browse to your phone - click tools - folder options - change to 'view' tab - scroll down the list and TICK 'show hidden files and folders' and UNTICK 'hide protected operating system files'
I have created a folder on my external sd card named Movies.
I use Moboplayer, and have pre-set it to only view that folder when opened. But, after viewing any of the files in the sd card folder, the folder and files are displayed in Gallery. How can I prevent that from happening?
Or, put another way, I want to store some video files on my external sd card
and want to be the only one who is able to view them?
create a file in that directory called .nomedia that will prevent it being scanned by Gallery
Thanks, I'll try that later today and report back.

As a beginner with Android, I'm not sure I know how to do what you said to do.
Can you please tell me the easiest way to create that file? Thanks again.
Sure. Open an adb shell. Change to the directory you want the file in. Type "touch .nomedia "
Press enter
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA Premium App
As an Android beginner, I have no idea what or how to use and adb shell.
Does it require that the Tab be Rooted?
Can I use a file manager like Astro?
Can I open the folder on my win xp desktop and create the file om the sd card with windows explorer?
Sorry to be so dense here, but, I am trying to learn what to do.

Get the free ES File Explorer from the store. You can do all the MS Windows-esque file management with that.
What is going to prevent someone else from launching Mobo and seeing the same files that you do?
I do have ES File Explorer installed, and didn't find a way to create a new file in that folder. Can you please suggest what to do when I get to the folder in question? Thanks.
As for your question about others using Mobo, is there a way to password protect a give app?

Ok, es 101: the key to finding everything is the menu button that spears on the dock in es. From there you can select new> folder.
android/linux 101: any file or folder named starting with a period is deemed "hidden". An example would be a folder called .media. Because the name behind with a period, it is now hidden. To show hidden file, go into es file explorer settings, and check "show hidden files"
...and if you don't want to play with renaming folders every time, try Hide It Pro from the market. You set a password that is required to open the app. It disguise itself as a fake audio manager. You just need to browse to the file you need to hide and select "share with audio manager". There's a really good guide inside the app when you install it but its rather simple Works great on Iconia.
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.smartanuj.hideitpro&feature=search_result
It also displays adds but its free and your hidden content is just a "click" away You can hide any file type compared to Photo Vault and Video Vault (they support only several file formats and they are paid apps)
Use a file manager such as astro, and change the format of the video to a format that doesn't exist by renaming it, for example: video.avi ----> video.uitpo, then the video won't be shown in gallery or anywhere else, and whenever you wanna view the video just change the format back to what it was.

I have created a file in my directory named .nomedia
But, when the Acer is powered off and started up again, all the files in this directory show up in the Gallery again. That approach doesn't seem to work for me.
