[I9023][REF] All OTA and Available Full ROM Packages - Nexus S General

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
I HAVE CEASED UPDATING THIS THEAD.
The old information contained below will remain for posterity, but will no longer be updated. From this point forward, all updates to this information will be found at http://www.randomphantasmagoria.com/firmware/nexus-s
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Below is a list of all available OTA and full ROM packages for the Nexus S, model I9023.
THIS IS FOR I9023 ONLY. IF YOU HAVE ANOTHER VARIANT, PLEASE FIND THE THREAD FOR YOUR VARIANT.
Typical disclaimer where I tell you that all of this stuff is at your own risk and I'm not responsible if you mess up your phone, yadda yadda.
These updates are 100% stock and are NOT rooted.
HOW TO FLASH
I'm not giving instructions on how to flash ZIP files or fastboot images. If you don't know how to do that, you probably shouldn't be looking for stuff in this thread. There are plenty of threads on how to flash fastboot images or how to flash zips through recovery. Do a little reading before proceeding.
The recovery-flashable full ROM packages will only flash if your phone has no ROM, any custom ROM, or a stock ROM that's older than the version you're trying to flash. For instance, the 2.3.4 full ROM package will flash over the stock 2.3.3 ROM, but not over the stock 2.3.6 ROM.
With fastboot images, you can flash any version over any other version.
WHAT HAPPENS IF I GET AN ERROR WHILE FLASHING?
If you get an error flashing a recovery-flashable full ROM package, it means that you are running a stock ROM that's newer than the version you're trying to flash. If you're trying to downgrade, then you must install ClockworkMod recovery, then wipe system, boot, data, cache, and Dalvik cache. You will then be able to flash the older version. Optionally, you can also flash fastboot images of a version older than the version you're trying to flash.
If you get an error flashing an incremental update, it means one of four things. Either you don't have an I9023, you aren't running a stock ROM, you have changed something with your stock ROM (this includes build.prop changes, radio or bootloader changes as well), or you're running Android 4.X and trying to update manually. These incremental updates only work if you are running a completely, perfectly stock ROM exactly the way Google provides it, with the right radio and the right bootloader. There are no exceptions to this rule. Furthermore, Android 4.X ROMs can no longer be updated manually in stock recovery. See below.
A NOTE ABOUT ANDROID 4.X OTAs
Beginning with Ice Cream Sandwich, Google has made a change to stock recovery that prevents you from flashing future OTA updates manually. Instead you are now required to wait for the OTA notification on your phone and then tap "Reboot and Install."
If this pisses you off, you have the option of unlocking your bootloader, installing either a stock Gingerbread recovery or ClockworkMod recovery, and then flashing the OTA updates manually.
LATEST VERSION
The latest Android version available for I9023 is Ice Cream Sandwich version 4.0.4, build IMM76D.

fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
fastboot flash boot boot.img
fastboot flash system system.img
fastboot flash userdata userdata.img
fastboot erase cache
fastboot oem lock

INCREMENTAL UPDATES
The links provided here are to Google's official update package for each version. Sometimes Google provides a small incremental update package for upgrading between versions, other times they just provide full ROM packages for bigger version upgrades. For instance, Google pushed a small incremental update to upgrade from 2.3.4 to 2.3.6. If your phone was running 2.3.1, there is no 2.3.1 to 2.3.6 incremental update, so Google would push the 2.3.6 full ROM package.
If you don't see an upgrade path from your version to your desired version, it means you need to use a full ROM package above instead.
Android 2.3.3 (Build GRI40/XXKB1 Radio/KA3 Bootloader)
2.3.3 (GRI40) -> 2.3.4
Android 2.3.3 (Build GRI54/XXKB3 Radio/KA3 Bootloader)
Neither of these following OTA updates actually work. Both of them require an unknown radio, and will fail if you try to flash them on a phone running 2.3.3/GRI54 with the XXKB3 baseband. The 2.3.3->2.3.4 update has since been pulled by Google and the link is only provided here for posterity and reference. The only way to properly update 2.3.3/GRI54 is to flash a full ROM over it.
2.3.3 (GRI54) -> 2.3.4 (Update requires an unknown radio and will NOT update build GRI54 with XXKB3 radio.)
2.3.3 (GRI54) -> 4.0.4 (Update requires an unknown radio and will NOT update build GRI54 with XXKB3 radio.)
Android 2.3.4 (Build GRJ22/XXKD1 Radio/KA3 Bootloader)
2.3.4 -> 2.3.6
2.3.4 -> 4.0.4
Android 2.3.6 (Build GRK39F/XXKF1 Radio/KA3 Bootloader)
2.3.6 -> 4.0.3
2.3.6 -> 4.0.4
Android 4.0.3 (Build IML74K/XXKI1 Radio/KL1 Bootloader)

There is no dangers with this? And would the battery be that bad with incremental update to 4.0.3?

Please read the first post. These are the updates directly from Google. No matter if you use the full or incremental update, you will end up with the same ROM in the end.

Hello i need help, i need to unroot the device and i have i9023 GRI54
Android 2.3.3/GRI54/XXKB3 Radio/KA3 Bootloader
which is currently not available if any one can provide me the stock zip to flash through cwm so ill be able to go back to factory device (unrooted)
Thanks & Regards,

Why do you need GRI54? Is there some reason you need to run 2.3.3 instead of 2.3.6 or 4.0.3?

This device came with Android 2.3.3/GRI54/XXKB3 Radio/KA3 Bootloader. To get the warranty back i need to unroot the device with stock recovery and after that ill lock the bootloader. If any other updated verion of stock rom can get warranty back then it will also help, kindly tell which one should i flash.
Thanks

These are all official over-the-air updates from Google. Flashing any of these will not void your warranty, and they'll all unroot the device since they're stock.

The Android 4.0.3/IML74K is exactly the same file as for the i9020t right?

Like if i flash this Android 2.3.6/GRK39F/XXKF1 Radio/KA3 Bootloader
So it will also get me back to stock device + ill get the warranty back? and they will never know about the device that it was ever rooted?..
Actually im new to android and im loving it, im a little confused about Radio thing.. like i currenty have XXKB3 and the firmware that is listed above ^ is having XXKF1, will this create any conflict? i mean if i have waited for OTA update from google, so i would have got the same update 2.3.6 with XXKF1 Radio? and it would also have the same build number GRK39F instead of GRI54?
Thanks

Hi if i install this for my Nexus si9023 did i update via OTA?

To be clear, you are not getting the warranty "back". You are tricking customer support into thinking you never voided your warranty by flashing a custom ROM. I hope you understand the difference.
Anyways, flashing any of the files in this thread will bring you back to stock. That means stock radio, bootloader and build. However, it will be still necessary to lock the bootloader (fastboot oem lock), otherwise it's pretty easy to see that you've tinkered with the device.
As for your second question, the builds above are the official builds from Google. If you have the i9023 (easily recognizable by the SLCD screen) these are the builds that you would get with OTA. Don't look at all the build/radio/bootloader names, they usually change with each new version.

I think I understand you are asking if you will still receive OTA updates after flashing any of the above files. If so, the answer is yes.
You will loose root by flashing any of the above, though.

Ok, 1 question. What if i flash 4.0.3, can i flash back to 2.3.6? Because i read somewhere that this could be tricky to do, you can mess up your phone. Is that true?

Yes you can flash back. You would have to unlock your bootloader (which will wipe all your data), and then install ClockworkMod recovery.
Go into CWM recovery, wipe data, cache (you MUST wipe data and cache if you're downgrading), wipe Dalvik, system and boot as well. Once you've done that, you can flash the full 2.3.6 ROM package from the original post.

Thanks for offering to help!! I'll PM you instructions later on.

original GRI54 ROM
First of all, thanks for this useful thread!
I'd also like to know how to grab the original stock ROM from my Nexus S (I9023, Android 2.3.3, GRI54) just in case I wanted to revert my phone back to its original state. I know 2.3.6 is better than 2.3.3 but maybe I will need it for any reason in the future. My problem is, that if I unlock the bootloader (in order to install Clockwork recovery), I will loose my current configuration (apps, settings, etc.) since the /data partition will be wiped. And the original stock recovery will also be gone once I install Clockwork.
So my question is: can I boot into Clockwork recovery without flashing it to the recovery partition in order to access its backup feature, so that I can make a full backup of my original (current) system? Of course, the bootloader is still locked, so the real question is whether I can use a command like this with a locked bootloader:
fastboot boot recovery.img
I think it should work because this won't modify the system since I only boot the custom recovery.
Thanks in advance.

Is There An Official Repository For These ROM Packages?
I am from the west coast of the US and received the OTA ICS update on my Nexus S. I have been waiting for this update just as many of us but I was concerned about the battery issues the update caused for other users... finally I applied the update.
My battery with moderate usage lasted about two days (applications installed: Orbot, Firefox, Skype) with Gingerbread latest version. I was very satisfied with the performance of the device. After the upgrade to ICS 4.0.3 my battery life went to 9 hours at most.
I have read many forums on the net but none give a definitive explanation on the issue. Finally I found one that explained some known CPU bug.
I decided to downgrade to Gingerbread but could not find the official stock ROM.
Thank you very much for posting them.
Is there an official repository for these versions?
The explanation of what each model variant is (eg. I9020T, AWS/2100, T-mobile, Windmobile, Mobilicity...) is missing from the main and sub thread.
Updated from 2.3.4 Gingerbread to ICS, everything is running smooth except the android market won't work over 3G. (works fine with a wifi connection) Any suggestions on what might be causing the problem?
Try clearing cache and dalvik.
Is anyone experiencing issues on the Build GRK39F/XXKF1 Radio for ICS? I'm especially interested in those who use WIND mobile.
I've been told that it's usually a good idea to run the right radio paired with the right ROM. Is there some reason why you want to run XXKF1 with IML74K?

I'm not sure if your comment was directed towards me, but I thought by matching the Build Number, I could have a nice upgrade. I can't attach images, but my information are as follows:
Android Version: 2.3.6
Baseband Version: I9020XXKF1
Build Number: GRK39F
I'm also not rooted.
Also, check Market settings. There is an "Update over Wi-Fi only" checkbox. I don't remember if 2.3 had that or not.

To fix the 3G Market downloads problem on Mobilicity, go to Settings -> Wireless -> Mobile Networks -> Access Point Names.
Click on the MOWAP and MOMMS entries and delete anything that’s in the proxy field for each one.
You may need to reboot after doing this to see a change.

If it doesn't have a A (check behind the battery), then it is a i9020T. They just use the T & A to distinguish in the US between the T-Mobile and AT&T versions since they support different bands but the T is implied unless it is the A version.
Could you give me a few pointers please....
I bought my google nexus s from carphone warehouse and its on the vodafone network in the UK.
The details from the phone are:
Android version 2.3.6
Baseband version I9020XXKF1
Kernel version 2.6.35.7-gf5f63ef [email protected] #1
Build number GRK39F
My phone has not been rooted, and is completely stock (apart for the apps ive installed). The only updates that have been applied are those that come OTA. Im doing this because Vodafone UK seem to have no interest in updating the nexus s with the latest ICS.
From looking at these threads, I think this thread has the correct software to download and install on the phone, so I downloaded the incremental update 2.3.6 > 4.0.3 - firstly could you confirm that this is the correct rom ?
So then I renamed the file to update.zip, and copied it onto the root of the sd card.
I then powered off the phone and turned it back on whilst holding the power button and volume up to get to the bootloader.
I selected recovery and then phone reboots and shows the google logo for a second or two, then a box being unpacked for a second, and then an exclamation mark with a droid underneath it.
Could someone please give me some pointers as to what Im doing wrong here ? If its a stock update, then I dont think I have to unlock the bootloader.
I can then pull the battery and it will reboot as normal.
Thanks in advance.

[I9020A][REF] All OTA and Available Full ROM Packages

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
I HAVE CEASED UPDATING THIS THEAD.
The old information contained below will remain for posterity, but will no longer be updated. From this point forward, all updates to this information will be found at http://www.randomphantasmagoria.com/firmware/nexus-s
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Below is a list of all available OTA and full ROM packages for the Nexus S, model I9020A.
THIS IS FOR I9020A ONLY.
I'm not giving instructions on how to flash ZIP files. If you don't know how to do that, you probably shouldn't be looking for stuff in this thread. There are plenty of threads on how to flash zips through recovery. Do a little reading before proceeding.
The recovery-flashable full ROM packages will only flash if your phone has no ROM, any custom ROM, or a stock ROM that's older than the version you're trying to flash. For instance, the 2.3.6 full ROM package will flash over the stock 2.3.3 ROM, but not over the stock 4.0.4 ROM.
Either you don't have an I9020A, you aren't running a stock ROM, you have changed something with your stock ROM (this includes build.prop changes, radio or bootloader changes as well), or you're running Android 4.X and trying to update manually.
The latest Android version available for I9020A is Ice Cream Sandwich version 4.0.4, build IMM76D.

FASTBOOT IMAGES
If you're comfortable with fastboot, you can flash these images to return your phone back to raw stock.
Generally the best way to do this is to perform the following steps:
Put all six fastboot images in one folder, unlock your bootloader, perform the fastboot flashes, then lock the bootloader:
fastboot oem unlock
fastboot flash bootloader bootloader.img
fastboot reboot-bootloader
fastboot flash radio radio.img
fastboot reboot-bootloader
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
fastboot flash boot boot.img
fastboot flash system system.img
fastboot flash userdata userdata.img
fastboot erase cache
fastboot oem lock
FLASHING FASTBOOT IMAGES WILL ERASE ALL OF YOUR PHONE'S DATA AND WILL RETURN YOU TO A FACTORY STOCK, UNROOTED STATE.
Android 4.0.4/IMM76D/UCKJ1 Radio/KL1 Bootloader

Android 2.3.3/GRI54/UCKB2 Radio/KA3 Bootloader
INCREMENTAL UPDATES
The links provided here are to Google's official update package for each version. Sometimes Google provides a small incremental update package for upgrading between versions, other times they just provide full ROM packages for bigger version upgrades. For instance, Google pushed a small incremental update to upgrade from 2.3.4 to 2.3.6. If your phone was running 2.3.3, there is no 2.3.3 to 2.3.6 incremental update, so Google would push the 2.3.6 full ROM package.
If you don't see an upgrade path from your version to your desired version, it means you need to use a full ROM package above instead.
Android 2.3.3 (Build GRI54/UCKB2 Radio/KA3 Bootloader)
2.3.3 -> 2.3.4 (GRJ22)
Android 2.3.4 (Build GRJ22/UCKD1 Radio/KA3 Bootloader)
2.3.4 (GRJ22) -> 2.3.6 (GRK39C)
2.3.4 (GRJ22) -> 2.3.6 (GRK39F)
Android 2.3.6 (Build GRK39C/UCKF1 Radio/KA3 Bootloader)
2.3.6 (GRK39C) -> 2.3.6 (GRK39F)
Android 2.3.6 (Build GRK39F/UCKF1 Radio/KA3 Bootloader)
2.3.6 (GRK39F) -> 4.0.4

That's because the manufacturers are pushing it. We're waiting on Google.
I bought Nexus S thinking it was a great phone, because Google would update it really fast to ICS and whatever. But here is the downside:
If you want to contact HTC, Motorola, or your carrier to ask for a update, they at least have an email, something you can contact them for.
How can I contact Google?
How can I receive an ETA on this?

Yeah, that file has been missing for a while. You will probably need to flash the entire rom.

You mean incremental updates from Google? No, just use standard recovery. You only need a custom recovery if you are trying to downgrade with a rom older than your current version.
Thank you very much, I was able to update all three nexus s's in my home to 2.3.6 now if only I could find ICS I'd be a happy camperhttp://media.xda-developers.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

There is no ICS for the i9020a yet. You can install the T-mobile version and then flash the AT&T radio but you may just want to wait until it officially comes out which is hopefully soon.

[Q] Long time no Flash :D

Hey guys,
Its been a very long time since I flashed a rom on my N7. I was busy with the damn uni but now that summer is here I can play with my N7
Let me make this quick, I have unlocked the N7 using the tool kit long time ago and Im not sure if it still exists on my PC
Im currently running - CM10 4.1.2
Modle - GT-I9000
-Bootloader-
HW VERSION - ER3
BOOTLOADER VERSION - 3.34
UNLOCKED
Recovery - i think CMW
Now I want to update to 4.2.2
Can I just flash a ROM with 4.2.2 or I have to do something with bootloader?
And btw just after going to the bootloader today which I didn't see long time ago the N7 didn't boot when I choose start then I held the power button till it rest and it worked but now a random reboot occurred :|
You need to update your bootloader to 4.18 or you may encounter problems. Also flash a new recovery (I recommend TWRP). From there you can just flash cyanogenmod 10.1.0 rc5 + gapps to upgrade (dirty flash).

Just download the latest firmware from your device from Google (or look on this forum for the latest bootloader file). Extract all the contents in your fastboot folder. Open a terminal there and type:
fastboot flash bootloader name-of-bootloader.img
fastboot reboot-bootloader
Extra double check that you flash the correct and appropriate bootloader for your device. A corrupt bootloader might hard brick your device. I prefer to do this myself so therefore I don't use toolkits.
This will not erase anything and your bootloader remains unlocked.
Flashing a new recovery is done by:
fastboot flash recovery name-of-recovery.img
From there you can start wiping everything again and start flashing new roms. TWRP supports usb-otg, so you can use it to wipe the internal memory and install cyanogenmod 10.1.0 (android 4.2.2) from a usb stick. Way better then stock.
If you just want the official stock firmware, or for troubleshooting, then I recommend the sticky for manually flashing the official Google Android firmware.

should work, check the latest comments in the thread to check whether it has been successful
whichever method you use, make sure to verify the md5 of the bootloader.img or zip before you flash it. pretty sure a corrupt bootloader will end up in a brick!

You mean a method like this? https://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g4-plus/how-to/xt1644-stock-marshmallow-to-nougat-t3540022
If you download the 93-14 Nougat firmware, that's the latest version. Nougat OTAs currently only exist for the 93-11 firmware.

Yes, your bootloader status won't matter - as long as that's all you've done. As I understand it, the update via stock recovery only cares if the rest of your phone has been modified - if you've still got a stock bootloader, stock recovery and stock kernel (from MM, provided it's up to date), it should work and you should be eligible for future OTAs.
The only hurdle I could see happening is that the build of Marshmallow expected by the OTA and your phone's current OS build do not match, in which case it won't install. Thus, you may have to consult one of the fastboot Nougat 93-11 or 93-14 threads to install, which you'll have to do if your system is modified past the bootloader.
Here are a couple for your perusal:

I am scared if something goes wrong then i will even not able to restore nandroid backup. Hope you gotta help me.

I see you've received a response in the other thread regarding if XT1644 will accept the update; given you've flashed TWRP, if you wish to be very safe, I would suggest re-installing your Marshmallow ROM so you have a stock install before proceeding to Nougat. There's nothing stopping you from directly flashing Nougat, and the fastboot method for either Nougat build may correctly overwrite the relevant files, the only way is to try the procedure. Don't use the TWRP backup images of Nougat - they don't contain updates to your baseband modem and other core parts of your device - they are only meant to be used once your entire phone is updated to Nougat.
If you wish to restore back to stock MM before flashing Nougat, here's links to stock firmware for XT1644: https://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g4-plus/how-to/xt1644-firmware-t3454980
But either way, read all the instructions first, ensure you've got all the firmware and tools you need installed/downloaded, your phone has at least 50 % battery and plenty of time, and you should be okay.

Help

Hello, the other day I accidentally wiped the system when using TWRP. So i found a stock rom but unfortunately it was this one https://forum.xda-developers.com/general/rooting-roms/real-official-stock-rom-xt1625-xt1642-t3575895 which is a 6.1.1 rom. Now my problem is that no updates have come through for android 7.
Regards,
Jack
What device do you have? It looks like you downloaded the MPJ24.139-64/65 build from the Motorola website and might have meant there's a mismatch between the expected build for your software channel and the build on your device. That would mean then Nougat wouldn't update.
If you desire Nougat and are willing to update to Nougat via fastboot, you could flash the March 2017 fastboot ROM (NPJS25.93-14-4). You may choose not to re-lock the bootloader if you desire flashing TWRP or a custom ROM. https://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g4-plus/how-to/stock-rom-npjs25-93-14-4-march-1-t3608138
Since I do not know what stock ROM you had previously on your device, I would exercise caution and ensure your data is backed up and off your device before attempting to flash the stock ROM. Though it's a stock ROM and fastbooting should be a safe option to upgrade with, it's still a flash affecting your system. Be careful.

Hello, thanks for your reply. My device is the XT1642. I am surprised I managed to wipe the system. I never normally am this stupid when it comes to messing with flashes and wiping data.
